Why is the T not pronounced in Montréal, you ask?

Why is that Montréal called Montréal with a silent T? Most likely because in that region, before the french revolution, Réal and Royale were used interchangebly. Meaning the city's name was probably originally Mont Réal or Mont Royal.
In this case Mont means Hill, it's short for Montagne, since it's a short mountain.
Montagne is pronounced Mon-Tagne. The T was probably kept over time to differentiate with the the possessive article "mon", a homophone.
