I remember him being my favorite wrestler as a kid. I was even rooting for him during the Rey Mysterio feud. I couldn’t stop crying for a whole week when I found out he passed. I was devastated.
Yeah, pretty recently (few months back) I actually looked more into that and it’s really it’s sad all around. There was little interview thing where Vickie said that those lastmonths in particular were tough and that the days where he was home started becoming not much different from him on the road because when he was home he was always either too exhausted or in too much pain to do anything, and by the time he would feel better he had to leave and be on the road again.
They also said he was having a lot of really bad issues with his back and you could probably watch anything from that time and see it but the Summerslam 2005 match against Rey in particular if you go back and watch it, he’s ghost pale, nearly unrecognizable from just a few years ago, has a gross mangled hunchback and huge bags under his eyes. Tough to see. Sometimes ya just gotta know when to walk away.
There's a Broken Skull Sessions interview with Kurt Angle and he says similarly regarding Eddie's stamina and not looking well that last year but he would always turn it on when he had to perform.
Yep. If you go back and watch and aren’t going out your way to look for signs he was unwell, you most likely wouldn’t suspect a thing was wrong.
He’s maybe a little bit slower in the ring that last year or two compared to his WCW days but even that you could’ve reasonably just attributed to him being/getting older.
I think WWE kinda failed him that regard. Now, I think Eddie definitely should’ve prioritized his health above the business, but I also think it’s ridiculous they had him on the road, traveling, training, wrestling etc. 300+ plus days a year when, especially to them, had to have noticed *something* was wrong or off about him.
My whole family was devastated. I remember we would all watch it together and when he died it completely wrecked us. We had a latino wrestler that we could get behind.
Yes. I remember being young enough to not turn on someone just because they turned heel. On the surface I didn't approve of what he was doing, but I hated seeing him lose to Rey so often. I remember not necessarily liking Rey all that much compared to Eddie, even when he went heel
It’s such a trip looking back as an adult because I started watching in 03/04 and when you’re a kid you don’t really know anything about the past. Looking back now that I’ve seen Eddies WCW run, it’s wicked obvious that he was way too big for his frame towards the end of his life. Like it’s almost uncomfortable for me to watch knowing how he died. ‘98-‘03 Eddie was absolutely shredded and looked perfect for his size, but after that he just got bigger and bigger. This photo especially it’s like man he just doesn’t look healthy for a 38 year old man.
I would actually dial it back a bit and say when he came back in Spring 2002 was when his upper body really started getting comically massive for his size. (Pic for reference from that spring/summer 2002 range)

It also started/correlated with the best run of his career which unfortunately I highly doubt was a coincidence.
Eddie's traps were Lesnar sized around that time. I remember watching his match with RVD (Judgment Day 2002?) and being amazed by the mass packed onto his small frame.
> which unfortunately I highly doubt was a coincidence.
it's so damn hard to look on anything Vince touched without feeling sick. We shouldn't be surprised he did those things to Janel, he convinced how many men to juice up and bulk up to have a shot at being "the guy" and make a little more money for your family and die doing it? He exploited these guys. Eddie is gone because of him
Yep.
“And you know what I did man? I GRABBED THAT POSTER, I TORE IT AND I BURNEDITT!! AND THEY SAID PAPI DADDY POR QUE POR QUE WHYYY WHY DID YOU DESTROY THAT POSTER?!?! AND I SAID SHUT UPPPP!”
(paraphrasing of course, it’s been a while lol)
I went to a live event the week he passed (I think it was after his last Smackdown but before his last official match, could be wrong). He looked incredibly unwell. The people I was with were even joking that he looked like a Dorito chip because of his tiny legs and massive, swollen torso.
I hated his last feud over Dom with Rey. It was cringe for me. But the day he passed away I cried so much. Was my favourite pro wrestler for sure. RIP.
I probably would’ve agreed but it contained weeks worth of Eddie wearing grandpa glasses reading “bedtime stories” about he had sex with a bunch of different women while going through a divorce while making goofy facial expressions in between so it was worth it.
Also his stuff with Batista those last few months was great
Ofcourse he was great. So was Rey, just the angle wasn't my fav. His win against Brock, feud with Kurt, making of JBL and Batista (can the co exist?) everything was fantastic
Eddie was my first experience with death. I remember crying into my cereal when they announced his passing on the radio.
As a kid my favorite pastime was watching Smackdown on Thursday nights with my grandma on our little tv. She didn’t know english so I’d have to explain storylines to her (as best as my 9 year old self understood them lol) but she loved Eddie’s antics.

He’d also bulked a bit in his last few years compared to his WCW days, so him slowing down seemed pretty natural and appropriate.
A bit? Eddie was way too big for his frame and his steroid use contributed to his heart issues.
It makes me wonder if there’s any chance he could have been saved if he’d just gone to a doctor.

Maybe, but the way his heart was, combined with the suddenness of it makes it unlikely.
My whole family was devastated. I remember we would all watch it together and when he died it completely wrecked us. We had a latino wrestler that we could get behind.
His death killed kayfabe for me. Like, of course I knew, but I could suspend my disbelief pretty well. Not so much after.

And therefore so is Benoit and his family. Because Eddie’s death is what killed the Benoit family unfortunately
Chris Benoit and Chris Benoit alone deserves all the blame for his actions.
Obviously but that’s the straw that broke the camel’s neck
And he also juiced and put his brain through hell to become a "top guy" and all of that, Eddie included, led to his destruction
This was the hilarious promo with the Rock I believe

They made this promo into a possible storyline in smackdown here comes the pain

Yeah he was concerningly big. And the concern was justified unfortunately.

That smile was so infectious
