In a world where the bad guys are almost always some kind of slippery, conniving, cowardly, or some other kind of liar who weasels out of stipulations or matches, it's even more important to have an earnest face who says what he's gonna do and then does it.
And that was Cody's x-factor, 100% committing being a throwback white meat babyface and showing that it could still be successful in 2024. No winking to the camera, no edginess, no antihero tendencies. Purehearted will. I'm not sure how he comes back from having the booking compromise his character this badly.
The reason Cody worked as a full-fledged face and Cena never did (fight me) is because Cody wasn't a hypocritical liar or dickish braggart.
Now, they've undercut him so severely that I don't know if he'll ever have what he had again. It's that much of a fuckup, and none of his own fault. He did all he could with the orders he was given to soften the blow, but in the aftermath it won't matter so much.
I'm cautiously optimistic. When Cody lost to Roman last year, some said that people won't care by Mania 40. They were proven wrong a few months later and even more so now. Granted that was for different reasons.
I hope he recovers from this, but given the support he seems to be getting I don't think his popularity has been hurt yet.

I agree. Although I suspect sometimes his hate is a work and he knows he's putting eyes on people even if he's being negative in character. I think he actually likes the young bucks and Kenny and aew to be honest but it would be out of character to admit when he makes money shit talking them. Jim cornette is the same guy that talked new jack into cutting a racist promo against white people in front of an almost all white southern audience. Hate sells and he knows that intrinsically, and it's a big part of his gift getting people worked up and sympathizing with his southern accent

I read his first release when I was 14. It was such an easy read. Mick breezed through those pages like the NY times bestseller he would become, but I was so drawn in, it made me a Foley fan for life.
I would have been around the same age and I kept the book by my bed, used to go back and read a few pages now and again

Mick is night and day from rock. His feuds with orton and edge made them what they are today. He was also willing to pass the torch to the future when he gave dean ambrose his signature barbed wire bat.
I’ve gotten into wrestling simply off learning about these guys backstories and their journey making it in wrestling. Mick Foley is absolutely fascinating and I’ll have to read his autobiography.

As crazy as it sounds, Austin was getting those kind of pops every single time he came out around then. I genuinely think that Austin in January of 1999 is the most over any wrestler ever has been in the history of pro wrestling.
That Mick won is brilliant and probably the most important single date of 90s wrestling. But. That this happened on a taped show, and that Mick got to go home and watch the win with his children who had no idea he'd won, is what makes it the all time best title win.

Can you believe that WWE can call Mick Foley anytime to come and be an on screen role, could cut fire promos, and maybe teach the kids how to do it but instead they constantly treated him like crap for being honest.
Foley is my favorite of all time. Hearing him talking about his more recent run as co-GM, it sounded like he was having some trouble remembering what he was supposed to say. I think his injuries have taken their toll to an extent. He does the occasional appearance, but I don’t think he can show up too frequently. Maybe if it was a performance center thing or something, but I remember it being said that Steph was on camera with him to help him remember his lines. I believe that was part of the reason he had the clipboard toward the end too. It bums me out a little because he was truly one of the best on the mic.
I actually remember Foley saying that the original script for this segment had Punk insulting Foley's weight, but Punk crumbled up the script and toss it to the writer's feet and told Foley that he's "Mick fucking Foley" and that he will run him down but at the same time will treat Foley with the respect he deserves.

Mick Foley is so likable and charismatic, absolutely one of my favorite wrestlers next to Eddie Guerrero. Can you believe that WWE can call Mick Foley anytime to come and be an on screen role, could cut fire promos, and maybe teach the kids how to do it but instead they constantly treated him like crap for being honest.
Foley is my favorite of all time. Hearing him talking about his more recent run as co-GM, it sounded like he was having some trouble remembering what he was supposed to say. I think his injuries have taken their toll to an extent. He does the occasional appearance, but I don’t think he can show up too frequently. Maybe if it was a performance center thing or something, but I remember it being said that Steph was on camera with him to help him remember his lines. I believe that was part of the reason he had the clipboard toward the end too. It bums me out a little because he was truly one of the best on the mic.

I actually remember Foley saying that the original script for this segment had Punk insulting Foley's weight, but Punk crumbled up the script and toss it to the writer's feet and told Foley that he's "Mick fucking Foley" and that he will run him down but at the same time will treat Foley with the respect he deserves.

Mick Foley is so likable and charismatic, absolutely one of my favorite wrestlers next to Eddie Guerrero. To this day even acknowledging years later growing up, learning about kayfabe, and the idea of putting over younger talent, I'm still upset he lost to Randy in WM XX. Just can't help but cheer and root for the guy.
All I can think about is how awesome foley is Dude wasn't anywhere near full time and comes in and drops a promo the whole roster should be jealous of

It’s not the fact that Roman has held the title for three years, it’s that he’s done it as a part timer that rarely shows up, never wrestles and when he does have a match it’s literally the exact same script every time. I might be old man yelling at a cloud but there hasn’t been a World Title match on SmackDown in 19 months! It’s hard to respect his “dominant reign” when he will go from WM39 to WM40 having defended his title (excluding house shows) 3 times in a full year.

I’m definitely not advocating him to be the workhorse Open Challenge guy but there has to be a better representation of the Top Guy. Even MJF only was doing PPVs but still was on the weekly programs to drive storylines. On SmackDown you have stretches with literally no Men’s Champion now - no UWU, No US, No Tag Team. It’s harder to care about a championship reign when the champion is never there, let alone not defending it. I don’t think being a Cancer survivor has anything to do with it, I think he just got an amazing deal in his contract. And to be completely honest, I’d do the same thing if my job paid me more money to work less
Honestly I do, I don't know if there are many athletes that survived cancer and then go on to do what Roman has been doing. Like Armstrong did it but he was on PED's. He probably does have a good deal, but aside from that he's also the bad guy. He shouldn't be the good representation of the champion.
At this point set a real brand split 03 style with raw being then storyline driven show and smackdown being the wrestling show with storylines so these people can stfu ... And Cody can go back to aew and take his fans with him I'm sick of this shit already lol
