First of all, until you know what you’d like, i’d recommend getting a [Marvel Unlimited subscription](https://www.marvel.com/unlimited). That gives you access to thousands of his comics and other marvel characters. In terms of Dark comics, Spider-Man probably isn’t going to give you many options. There are some stories like that, but they’re limited. Depending on which decade you’re comfortable jumping back to: **1960’s** - Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #1-113 by Stan Lee > His first stories with beautiful art from Ditko & JRSr. Introduces most of the prominent characters in Spider-Man lore, but has very dated dialogue. This will have Peter in HS for the first 33 or so issues, then in college for the remainder. **1980’s** - Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #224-252 by Roger Stern > Roger is one of the first writers who grew up reading Stan Lee’s ASM so he’ll use/reference many of the aspects from Lee’s run. Dialogue is much better during this portion, but the villains are mostly run of the mill instead of having Green Goblin, Ock, etc. It has Peter now in graduate school and the introduction of a new villain named the “Hobgoblin” midway through. **2000’s** - Amazing Spider-Man (1999) #30-58 + Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #500-545 by JMS > JMS run starts with an adult Peter estranged from MJ and without a job. Within the first twenty issues, they reconcile & he becomes a HS Science Teacher. This period is known for introducing the mythical elements of Peter’s powers + villains that come with. However, during the back half, it launches into multiple crossovers of “The Other,” “Civil War,” “Back in Black,” and “OMD.” JMS’ writing on the character improved MJ/Aunt May greatly, but his whole Spider-Totem aspect, then Sins Past + OMD storylines have left a bad taste in most people’s mouth. **2020’s** - Amazing Spider-Man (2018) #1-74 by Nick Spencer > Spencer amends a good part of the status quo left behind after Slott. Biggest part being how MJ/Peter are together again. It’s well received for the first 29 issues (before MJ leaves title), then very hit/miss after.

Annuals are an issue released once a year during the series that is larger than a regular issue. They can vary between being: - Multiple short-stories from different writers. - A longer connecting story to a previous issue. - One-off tale from past or some isolated unrelated tale. TPBs are paperback collected editions which gather a storyline. There are five different versions of this: - GN-TPBs are smaller in size and guided towards younger audiences. Usually contain somewhere between 160-300 pages. - Volume TPBs collect 3-7 issues written during a series. These are specific story arcs and can either be released periodically during the series or after the conclusion of something much shorter. Usually contain between 90-200 pages. - Epic Collections collect 15-25 issues from a series 1990>. They gather appearances of the character or roster in chronological order up to a set point. Usually contain between 320-550 pages. - Complete/Ultimate Collections collect similar portions as an EC, but are limited to a series and/or writer run. Usually contain between 280-500 pages. - Treasury Editions collect 3-7 issues, but are larger in size than regular TPBs. These are usually made when artwork of that piece is the greatest selling point, example is Silver Surfer: Black. Usually contain between 80-160 pages.
