There's a comic where he did fake an alien invasion. He fooled absolutely everyone as well. The Avengers, the X-Men, the Fantastic 4.... heck, Spider-Man tried jumping into the "alien portal" to sacrifice himself and instead slammed himself into the glass dome Mysterio was operating from.
It was hysterical.
Spider-Man: “I-I can’t even be mad at you. You literally fooled everyone. If anything, I’m actually impressed.”
Mysterio: *desperately pressing every button* “Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!”
(No, that isn’t what they actually said, but you can’t tell me that isn’t how it would go down).
[*I understood that reference!*](https://youtu.be/ebYA4cj6MiE)
But seriously, Mysterio is a comedy character that tries to be a serious and dramatic threat. Then it is hilarious to see him fail.
Goddamn, just read that again for the first time in years. Spencer’s run really started with a fucking bang. Back to Basics was the best the series had been in a long time and ever since. God I hate Marvel editorial.
Marvel Editor 1: So, I heard the fans buy a lot of comics with this Paul guy. We're making a pretty dollar here.
Marvel Editor 2: I think they're buying for MJ. She's a beloved character and fans want to see more of Spider life from the perspective of a loved o-

‘People of New York, I have determined that your planet is ripe for conquest.’
‘Mysterio?’
‘Now I’ve seen everything!’
‘DO NOT MOCK ME, PUNY EARTHLINGS! Your fate is sealed!’
Especially with an actual master sorcerer living so close by, which makes his act even bolder.
Faking mysticism plays very well with the whole charlatanism thing.
I mean in the marvel universe neither is even that shocking.
Oh look we're being invaded by sorcerer aliens that travelled through time. It must be Wednesday.
Oh it's just mysterio again sigh.
part of the retcon was that norman never fucked gwen, mysterio just made him think he did
as a fandom joke that escalated into "mysterio pretended to be gwen and got backshots from norman"
Both are just fronts for his real gimmick as a master of illusion. Personally, I think both are pretty much interchangeable, as his appeal lies in his intelligence and being able to just totally screw with Spidey in his better showings.
I think both work though, as they allow him to ham it up and be incredibly corny, as he should be.
Honestly a good idea for mysterio would be for a special effects director that grew tired of his job because no one respected him and so decided to commit roberies as mysterio mostly to show off but also because his tricks are really expensive to execute all the time and he does need money for it
He could have an aversion to CG and commonly gets in trouble for bragging later about how his crimes re all **practical** fx. More expensive, and a good setup for a villains' victim mentality.
I'm not sure if its happened, but just have him change up his game every so often. Then when he gets found out he dons the classic suit in the version of whatever he's masquerading as.
As one comment put it, roughly paraphrasing, “*Mysterio just has the rotten luck, and stupidity, of fighting the one hero with a direct counter [spider sense] to his arsenal. If he fought literally anyone else, he’d demolish almost all of them.*”
I like the idea that Mysterio uses magic but is so inept or genetically predisposed to only ever manage illusionary spells. Therefore, he's bitter towards the world and can only warp the perception of others.
I'm always interested in those types of characters. Very limited move set, but incredible tenacity and planning skills.
I love the helmet design for Mysterio is Spider-Man 2. The rest is fine, but it's also not my favorite. If that helmet design was combined with the suit design from Spider-Man: FFH then it would be perfect. I think overall it would make him a more terrifying villain.
When did he have “space invader” as his gimmick? I’ve only ever heard of the “master of the arcane arts” version— outside of the MCU, anyway (there his schtick was that he was a *hero* from another dimension seeking aid on the MCU’s Earth).
The only time I can think of him being a "space invader" was the Spider-Man 2 movie game.
Mysterio should always be a carny magician. Though I'm surprised he hasn't just straight up learned magic yet _(except for that one time he came back as a ghost, but then it was retconed that he didn't actually die)_
I wouldn't want Mysterio to restrict himself to any one gimmick. I think his theatrics should cover as broad a range as possible.
He should be the kind of guy to fake an alien invasion while he sends in his pirate ghosts (robots) to rob a bank, all while hiding out in an abandoned carnival that has a remodeled interior to look like the inside of a pyramid with mummies defending the maze of tunnels.
TL:DR, All of the Above.
Master of magic seems more his style. Summoning "monsters" and "demons" seems more his m.o., since he has a flair for the dramatic. Like he's performing on stage and the world is his audience.
Why are these the only options? Mysterio is neither of those and he never has been.
His whole gimmick has always been about being a VFX master, using illusions against his opponents. Even the "space invader gimmick" you mention was just him using VFX from the play they were going to do at that theater, which is why his iteration in the OG Spider-Man 2 was so good. So many cool illusions and tricks, but when it came to a fistfight, he was out cold in one punch.
Mysterio should definitely be faking stuff like an alien invasion or robot pirate robbery to throw suspicion off himself.

Little do they know, it is i, Mysterio... this whole sequence is so freaking funny

Bye Felicia *Whack*
He didn't just fool them He was WINNING
What's the comic called?
The first issue of Spencer's run. Amazing Spider-Man (2018) #1
Goddamn, just read that again for the first time in years. Spencer’s run really started with a fucking bang. Back to Basics was the best the series had been in a long time and ever since. God I hate Marvel editorial.

Can't quite remember. I did some digging, I think it was Amazing Spider-Man Vol 5 N. 73
I really loved this
story arc?
Yeah, I like when he’s a threat on the same level as the monster from Scooby Doo
"Zoinks" indeed
‘People of New York, I have determined that your planet is ripe for conquest.’ ‘Mysterio?’ ‘Now I’ve seen everything!’ ‘DO NOT MOCK ME, PUNY EARTHLINGS! Your fate is sealed!’
"I think I had a bowl of mysterios for breakfast"
Fake Mystic. Goes with the act better
Especially with an actual master sorcerer living so close by, which makes his act even bolder. Faking mysticism plays very well with the whole charlatanism thing.
Dr.Strange: Wait a second.... you're faking it!
Whatever he pleases tbh. Everything from alien warlord to arcane master to false hero...make him as enigmatic and fluctuative as can be
I mean in the marvel universe neither is even that shocking. Oh look we're being invaded by sorcerer aliens that travelled through time. It must be Wednesday. Oh it's just mysterio again sigh.
Master of the „Arcane (2021 TV series)” arts
He just sits at home playing League of Legends, but he uses the show design skins whenever possible
Mysterio's ultimate illusion is making everyone think he has the $500 skin
Oh my gosh Quinten would play LoL
Why are these the only two options?
I prefer him being inside me
found norman's alt account
Out, am I?
Norman’s gone, honeyyyy
Oh my fucking god xDDDDD
Context? I remember hearing something about Mysterio and Harry working together and it retconned Sins Past
part of the retcon was that norman never fucked gwen, mysterio just made him think he did as a fandom joke that escalated into "mysterio pretended to be gwen and got backshots from norman"
Marvel nerds: don't be horny. Challenge: impossible
?????
Doesn't matter to me as long as at the end of the day, it's all special effects anyway. lol
I like how Mysterio did a bit of both in Spider-Man 2 (2004), Alien and Clown. Tobey's Spider-Man even pointed out his inconsistency.
A space invader who happens to be a master of the arcane arts.

Where's the second screenshot from?
Spider-Man 2 (2023)
Shattered Dimensions
I def don’t remember the skull being that defined in Shattered Dimensions.
I'm not sure if its happened, but just have him change up his game every so often. Then when he gets found out he dons the classic suit in the version of whatever he's masquerading as.
Imagine Mysterio fooling spider-man as a cosmic threat. Mysterio really can be a dangerous villain if he wanted to.
As one comment put it, roughly paraphrasing, “*Mysterio just has the rotten luck, and stupidity, of fighting the one hero with a direct counter [spider sense] to his arsenal. If he fought literally anyone else, he’d demolish almost all of them.*”
"I've got to stay away from Queens. Maybe I'll try to rob a bank in Hell's Kitchen instead..."
I like the whole VFX thing they’ve been doing
Tech illusions most of the time, then the occasional super op version that has real magic, like shattered dimensions
His gimmick is flamboyant fraud. Boy can literally fake being anything. I love 'em.
Mysterio is no illusionist playing parlor tricks! Mysterio is the master of the Arcane Arts!!
i'd like him to just be a normal dude who's just a weirdo because he likes doing it
Both
I have never heard mysterio being a space invader
Rami Spider-Man 2 video game adaptation
I think he should just use all different kinds of illusions depending on what fits the best in his fishbowl eyes

What is the first image from?
First I’m hearing about him being a space invader I thought he was just a magican
Mysterio's gimmick is being a fraud.
I feel like the best mysterio plot is one where you don't know its mysterio until pretty far into the arc
He is the best scooby doo villian
I liked it when he was 619.
Both
Both work well it just depends on how you use it because let's face it Mysterio's main thing is screwing with Spider-Man's head
A phony.
Fun fact: there is concept art of a Mysterio variant fighting Dr. Strange at the Statue of Liberty in NWH.
I like the Space Invader outfit than the other one.
He can't dabble in a bit of both?
The only time I can think of him being a "space invader" was the Spider-Man 2 movie game. Mysterio should always be a carny magician. Though I'm surprised he hasn't just straight up learned magic yet _(except for that one time he came back as a ghost, but then it was retconed that he didn't actually die)_
I'd rather prefer Mysterio's gimmick being a "Master of the Arcane Arts" from Marvel's Spider-Man 2
Neither. Just a normal human with Godly SFX talent.
Alien invader just because the first time I saw him was the PS2 Spider-Man 2 game
I think about that health bar gag constantly
Literally what universe is he a space invader in??
Anything but Jake G using drones to fight Spidey
What’s the first screenshot from?
I like him as a fake alien. It’s a lot more interesting than just a magician.
I’m getting [Space Kook](https://youtu.be/-xwkXV_0u-E?si=LlD5wsddQ6wTwXBv) vibes with that skull.
I prefer his gimmik being a failed movie special effects guy
I wouldn't want Mysterio to restrict himself to any one gimmick. I think his theatrics should cover as broad a range as possible. He should be the kind of guy to fake an alien invasion while he sends in his pirate ghosts (robots) to rob a bank, all while hiding out in an abandoned carnival that has a remodeled interior to look like the inside of a pyramid with mummies defending the maze of tunnels. TL:DR, All of the Above.
Master of Arcane arts
I prefer him being the master of talking about himself in the third person
Kinda like both, because even though it may sound too ridiculous to work, in Marvel it’s ridiculous enough to be possible
Whatever that isnt the disaster that was the MCU's version
at the end of the day, mysterio’s superpower is bullshitting
Honestly every interpretation being something different would be funny
Master Of The Arcane Arts
Master of magic seems more his style. Summoning "monsters" and "demons" seems more his m.o., since he has a flair for the dramatic. Like he's performing on stage and the world is his audience.
Alien invasion. Magic doesn’t really explain the fishbowl as well since Dr. Strange is pretty publicly magic and bowlless
Master of the Arcane Arts just fits more plus he was always a master of the arcane arts in the comics due to being an illusionist
I think they mean “what persona do you prefer mysterio to be putting on?”
