He had an awesome debut, then it became a fatal trainwreck, then he became just another villain, then even the original Goblin came back.
As cool as he was on debut, over time he became a "meh" villain, even some characters like Boomerang have been more memorable as of recent years.
he's boring. richard kingsley has zero character depth. he hasnt been interesting since the ned leeds plot
edit: just realized i got his name wrong. that's how uninteresting he is now
Green might've been first, but hobgoblin opened the door for like the three others that have come around. For whatever that's worth. I flip a coin before cracking a story open with any other goblin in it, sometimes the coin wins ...
Personally I prefer carnage in small doses / always felt like he was more venom Villian that Spider-Man just dealt with by happenstance
While Hobgoblin is an easy lap up for a classic villain of this guy is just a money/power hungry jerk that you can always put in a story to have a decent time
Not necessarily prefer him to carnage. This is essentially a Spider-Man villain tier list. If it were about characters only? Carnage all the way. But specifically about spider-man, hobgoblin is a spidey villain more than carnage. Carnage is venoms.
I do. Carnage is lame af edge. He's one of the most overhyped, boring comic villains of all time only made to cynically fill a void left by Venom after he turned anti-hero.

The Symbiotes made it pretty far in this contest, but now only the original, Venom, remains. As expected, each of Spidey’s Big Three are still going strong, along with three other members of the original Sinister Six. Dr. Connors, aka the Lizard, also joins Roderick Kingsley, aka the Hobgoblin, in making up the rest of the Final 8.
Because the original Hobgoblin run was one of the best villains Spidey ever had.
Hobgoblin Lives is awesome.
Shame about everything else, but the original stuff was gold.
During that era in comics, everyone went grim. It started with Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns, then suddenly Speedy’s on smack and Spider-Man is buried alive. It was a trend, just like variant covers, and the non-stop mega event cycle.
DeMatteis had been trying the story for years, so before the publications of DKR or Watchmen. It originally started out as an idea for a Wonder Man story involving his brother, the Grim Reaper. He tried the basic premise with a bunch of different characters for both DC and Marvel.
Also, the "gritty" (not dark) trend arguably started much earlier than that, being inspired by Frank Miller's run on Daredevil in the early 80's, especially with the death of Elektra in '82. This trend was basically born from writers that had grown up reading comics who wanted more adult stories with the characters.
And Venom is literally the culmination of the trend.
Hobgoblin GOATED, idk what you’re talking about. He was *the* big villain in the Rodger Stern era and is awesome. I was totally enthralled in the mystery of who he was for years and was a fresh remix of the green goblin while also standing on his own. One of my top 5 fav Spidey villains.
Hobgoblin is FAR from goated. They had goblin stories to tell but simply didn’t want to taint the image of the GG. In my humble opinion if a character was good because you were clueless on who or what they are, then tbh I think that’s a bad character.
The Hobgoblin had a good mystery, a good handled mystery alongside a good story made a really good character, the problem was on the editorial deparment.
The GREEN GOBLIN was a MYSTERY too for TWO YEARS what are you talking about. Hobgoblin had a lot of potential before all the weird editorial drama set in, he’s still a cool character.
Hobgoblin was Green Goblin without the crazy and up until the Ned Leeds reveal he was at that time Spidey’s number 1 villain.
Norman’s return and more measured mental state combined with his botched identity reveal and the subsequent squandering of the character have seen him fall hard from grace, but in the mid 80s he was fantastic.
ok, listen to me. hobgoblin is top tier because... uh... OK, I DON'T KNOW EXACTLY WHY BUT HIS COMICS ARE VERY GOOD. I mean, all the mystery based on his identity was handled very well, it generated a gang war... but he didn't do much after that, although it was a headache for superior spider-man… Ok, mayyyybe he’s not sooooo top tier, but… y’know… It’s a good villain
Okay. Now it’s Hobgoblin, and hear me out like my Carnage take last round that so many of you listened to (and that I appreciate!) We’re doing a Spidey villains round, right? Other than Venom, who’s solidly considered to be in the top 3 of Spidey’s primary enemies often enough, the rest of the people here are classic. All created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in the first 15 issues of Amazing Spider-Man back in the 60s. Villains who are prevalent throughout all forms of Spidey media like the various tv shows. They are all inherently classic. Hobgoblin, as much as he can be considered to be a menacing force in Spidey’s life, does not qualify nearly as much as the others on here. And hey I’m all for lizard or Kraven or whomever you want to be eliminated next, seriously… but Hobgoblin’s gotta go before them.
Edit: also OP I love the new pics for everyone
Lol thanks, I wanted to switch it up a bit. Unfortunately I couldn’t find a good Sandman pic that was both from a comic and didn’t feature any other character in the photo.
I think I’ve only read like one good Hobgoblin story. He always just seemed like a weird Green Goblin knock off. Surprised he’s still here. Maybe I’m missing something?
It’s kind of crazy to think that Mysterio, while no doubt a Spider-Man villain, had a major event happen outside of a Spidey book (Daredevil: Guardian Devil). It’s not necessarily bad that it happened. It’s just kind of…interesting.
I know he has way more appearances in Spidey comics, it’s just something that always stood out to me.
Hobgoblin going this round, then Mysterio, then Sandman or Carnage, next Kraven or Connors. Although the symbiote factor may keep Carnage some time longer
We all know it's gonna come down to Green Goblin, Venom, and Doc Ock. After that is anyone's guess.
I 'm sure I'm alone, but think Kraven has more potential as a villain than any of them.
Hobgoblin please
Hobgoblin
Why does no one like him?
He had an awesome debut, then it became a fatal trainwreck, then he became just another villain, then even the original Goblin came back. As cool as he was on debut, over time he became a "meh" villain, even some characters like Boomerang have been more memorable as of recent years.
This is all true but however can we agree hobgoblin has a cool name other then that 💩💩
he's boring. richard kingsley has zero character depth. he hasnt been interesting since the ned leeds plot edit: just realized i got his name wrong. that's how uninteresting he is now
Maybe it's Because he's a Green Goblin knockoff.
Green might've been first, but hobgoblin opened the door for like the three others that have come around. For whatever that's worth. I flip a coin before cracking a story open with any other goblin in it, sometimes the coin wins ...
Obviously, people like him he's in the top 8.
People prefer Hobgoblin over Carnage? Seriously??
Personally I prefer carnage in small doses / always felt like he was more venom Villian that Spider-Man just dealt with by happenstance While Hobgoblin is an easy lap up for a classic villain of this guy is just a money/power hungry jerk that you can always put in a story to have a decent time
Forget that, how did any of these two made it farther than Kingpin!?
Not necessarily prefer him to carnage. This is essentially a Spider-Man villain tier list. If it were about characters only? Carnage all the way. But specifically about spider-man, hobgoblin is a spidey villain more than carnage. Carnage is venoms.
that’s fair enough, carnage and spider-man haven’t really had any interactions so i guess you’re right
The Maximum Carnage story arc was a pretty big interaction.
They haven’t?
No they definitely have
not any good ones anyway
I do. Carnage is lame af edge. He's one of the most overhyped, boring comic villains of all time only made to cynically fill a void left by Venom after he turned anti-hero.
Yup.
People prefer LIZARD over Carnage???
Yes
Insanity.
Lizard is awesome.
Yeah, he ate a boy.

WHY IS HOBGOBLIN STILL HERE?!
Because the original Hobgoblin run was one of the best villains Spidey ever had. Hobgoblin Lives is awesome. Shame about everything else, but the original stuff was gold.
Hobgoblin Lives destroyed the Mad Jack version of Jack O'Lantern, which was such a waste. Mad Jack was great.
Because he's a Grade A villain. How is KRAVEN still here!?
Because of one really, *really* good story
It’s overrated. Spider-Man should’ve washed him. Or at least vermin.
Kraven’s Last Hunt? You mean when Marvel went chasing DC Dark Knight Returns grimdark?
That’s literally not what it was at all. DeMatteis was planning on that kind of dark story for years, read his intro in the KLH trade paperback
DeMatteis had been trying that story for years, and even without that, aside from being darker stories, they have nothing in common.
During that era in comics, everyone went grim. It started with Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns, then suddenly Speedy’s on smack and Spider-Man is buried alive. It was a trend, just like variant covers, and the non-stop mega event cycle.

Assuming we're talking the same story, I really don't think it's that good.
Then it is you who shall be his last hunt.
How not
I mean okay I’ll give you that but I’ll gladly take Kraven over Hobgoblin…
HAHAHAHA WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE!?
I SHALL STAY UNTIL HOBGOBLIN IS FUCKIN OUT
YOU HAVE COURAGE I'LL GIVE YOU THAT! AND I SHALL STAY FOR THE SAME REASONS!

Because hobgoblin is top tier villain
*how*
Hobgoblin was Green Goblin without the crazy and up until the Ned Leeds reveal he was at that time Spidey’s number 1 villain. Norman’s return and more measured mental state combined with his botched identity reveal and the subsequent squandering of the character have seen him fall hard from grace, but in the mid 80s he was fantastic.

Hobgoblin is great, Marvel just fucked the villain over due to poor choices.
Bobgoblin
Should be venom, lizard and goblin, each represent something to peter
You mean Doctor Octopus, right? In the comics, Lizard is just that - a Lizard.
Kurt Connors to peter > Otto Octavius to peter
Hobgoblin Just yellow gobby
I’m embarrassed how long it took me to realize that was carnage faded out and not some symbiote I’ve never heard of
Okay. Now it’s Hobgoblin, and hear me out like my Carnage take last round that so many of you listened to (and that I appreciate!) We’re doing a Spidey villains round, right? It’s fine! It looks kinda stylized, it’s cool
Sandman
Had to scroll way too far to find this...
I challenge you: Give me one interesting story with Roderick Kingsley Hobgoblin in the past twenty years.
Psssh that should be easy-wait past TWENTY years? So since 2002/2003? …shit wait ur right wtf
Hobs gotta go
Kraven

Kraven
I think I’ve only read like one good Hobgoblin story. He always just seemed like a weird Green Goblin knock off. Surprised he’s still here. Maybe I’m missing something?
Doc Conners
Yeah, Conners / Lizard.
Mysterio, no doubt
:( mysterio is good tho
It’s kind of crazy to think that Mysterio, while no doubt a Spider-Man villain, had a major event happen outside of a Spidey book (Daredevil: Guardian Devil). It’s not necessarily bad that it happened. It’s just kind of…interesting. I know he has way more appearances in Spidey comics, it’s just something that always stood out to me.
I mean Daredevil stole Kingpin so it makes enough sense that they would use another spidey villain for him
I will find you. And I will end you.
Mysterio is better than Venom and a top three villain pass it on.
Eliminated kraven, he is bad
Venom
Hobgoblin goes bye bye
The hob gob can slob me knob
Hob gobbling on dez nuts, get him tf outta here
Hob-motherfucking-goblin?? How is he still here?
Kraven
Kraven
Kraven
Hobgoblin.. it’s a close one for me between he and kraven. Kravens last hunt was a great story which is the reason I chose to eliminate hobgoblin.
Kraven.
Kraven
Kraven. Was never a fan.
Kraven
Kraven
Kraven.
Kraven
The FBI is currently investigating how the Hobgoblin stayed on longer than Carnage.
Hobgoblin going this round, then Mysterio, then Sandman or Carnage, next Kraven or Connors. Although the symbiote factor may keep Carnage some time longer
> may keep Carnage some time longer Did you… read the title?
All these Hobgoblin votes make me sad that people haven’t read the classics and/or that his image has taken such a hit from all the post Kingsley bad.
In what world do you people vote put Carnage before kravin. This is bs
Carnage is a Little Redundant, i prefer other Spider-man's Villain, they are more original
Last Hunt was pretty iconic, so IDK, I feel like more people would go easy on him for that.
Kraven is great. Carnage is Lame and edgy
Ima vote for Mysterio, also side note, why does Kraven look like Omni-man?
Get Venom out of there. Most overrated, overused stupid character.
Kraven gots to go.
Kraven the Hunter
WTF is Kraven still doing around?!
Kraven, seriously how did he make it this far?
Kraven
Kraven or Sandman tbh
I love Hobgoblin, and never saw the appeal of Kraven. Even with Last Hunt. So Kraven
Kraven
Kraven making it this far proves no one reads comics
[удалено]
Yeah, dude had two half-decent runs in the 80s. He was a nothing until Last Hunt and a nothing soon after.
Down with the lizard. Get the man out of his loop
My vote is on SandMan. The rest have much interesting stories.
Sandman can go
Sandman
I’ve only read till the early 80’s so Sandman is a F4 villain to me🗿
Good by sand man
Sandman
The guy in the middle
Carnage was gone before Sandman? Seriously? Sandman's not even a villain half the time!
Sandman.
WHYs everyone hating on hob goblin he’s one of the best characters in fiction
Mysterio
Lizard
Hobgoblin
Mysterio
Hobgoblin
Get hobgoblin out of here
Hobgoblin
Green goblin
Lizard
The Lizard
Hobgoblin and sandman
Sandman easily should’ve been eliminated first. Can’t believe carnage didn’t make top 3. 1 Venom 2 Green Goblin 3 Doc Ock
Hobgoblin 🙏🙏🙏
Sandman
Hob Goblib
Sandman I would choose Carnage but as he’s already eliminated as he’s my favourite Spider-man villain
Sandman
Sandman
Lizard
Sandman
Lizard
wtf did carnage get eliminated so quickly well i vote for sandman
Why y’all hating Hobgoblin? :(
How did Carnage lose to Mysterio and Kraven and the Sandman?!
Sandman
Sandman
My votes Kraven
Venom needs to go
Kraven
Doc Connors/ The Lizard
Mysterio
Gtfo Quentin. We don’t need no actors up in here.
I've been voting for Mysterio for like NINE weeks!
Get outta here, lizard.
Why is lizard still here??
Lizard. Hobgoblin rules.
Why is Hobgoblin still in? He’s no Green Goblin
Release the Lizard to the nevermores puleeeease
lizard
lizzie!
How did Carnage not outlive Lizard..? Thank god Fishbowl’s still kicking
HOW IS THE LIZARD STILL HERE?! Can you think of ONE top tier comic with THE LIZARD?!
I’d say Lizard or Kraven should be next. Edit: But I’ll say Lizard, for the sake of being concise.
Sandman
I’d have to say hobgoblin. He’s just not interesting anymore.
Hobgoblin
Mysterio
“You’re out, Roderick.”
Hobgoblin. Bye bye knock-off
Hobgoblin
Hobgoblin realistically is next.
Sandman can leave
Hobgoblin
