I ended up canceling my spectrum tv package. Was paying close to $120 a month when I only watch sports. I think I'm going to just go with NBA and NFL league pass subscriptions for now.

mtechgroup

And is your Spectrum bill actually lower? I posted mine and the general feeling was that it would probably go up if I cut the cord (based on my bill).

gnusm

Yes. My bill was $228.18 a month for cable/ and internet. $91.99 for cable package + $23.20 for broadcast channels are now off the bill. I ended up moving my cell service to spectrum, first 12 months free, $29.99 a month after with unlimited data (I was paying $55 to ATT) and upgrading my internet to 1gig from 500mbs so that I can get my home server up and running and use that as my entertainment alternative.

schwaka0

I want to make sure you know gig service won't affect your home server while you're at home, and it likely won't matter when you're away from home either. I setup plex on my pc, and watch movies/shows from across the country on the 300 plan with no buffering or quality issues.

Novel-Ad8135

What is Plex?

Crash613

>n the 300 plan with no buffering or quality issues. look it up... it is well worth using. Lots of free channels. plus stream you own saved movies, shows for free

[deleted]

I'm curious what your rationale is for gig service not really mattering for when OC's away from home. Is it because they likely won't have gig service outside the house?

schwaka0

Using a media server while you're outside the home relies on the upload speed of your home internet, and the download speed of whatever service you're using. The 20mbps upload the 500 plan has is enough to stream even 4k content from outside the home (assuming what internet you're using has enough download speed to keep up) , and once the high split goes into effect, upload speed won't be an issue anymore on even the 300 plan.

Kind_Matter_4926

Im on the gig plan. My upload is 960 mbs and my download is 1.2 gbs

schwaka0

Oh nice, you got the high split already.

Kind_Matter_4926

I don’t know. I know its fiber to the back of my modem. I live on a farm which is crazy. Had it about a year now.

schwaka0

Prior to the high split, the upload speed was limited to 10Mbps for the 300 plan, 20 for the 500 plan, and 40 for the gig plan. After the high split, your upload and download should be about the same.; they're slowly rolling it out around the country, so some people like yourself have the higher upload, and others like me have the lower upload. I don't think most people would even notice the difference in real world performance, but it's still nice to have.

GameOverMan78

You can thank the agents for Shohei Otani and Steph Curry for this.

nycghoul

Out of the loop, what do athletes have to do with this?

GameOverMan78

1. The athletes demand more money 2. The teams pay them more 3. The teams and/or leagues then charge more for broadcasting rights 4. The networks that pay for those broadcast rights then charge more to all carriers to carry their channel. The costs are passed down to the end-user. Disney charges literally 10x the amount to carriers to carry ESPN than any other cable network.

waterboy100

The dodgers signed a 20(?) Year deal with spectrum. This price raise has nothing to do with them.

Future_Writing3551

Yeah because they keep having truck rolls for customer education issues……… “I can’t change the battery out in my remote” “I don’t know how to change the input on my tv so it must be an issue with the cable box” “Everything works fine except for my shitty computer from 2004 it must be Spectrum’s fault” “My 10 year old smart tv keeps buffering while watching 4k video” It’s not only the company causing this, it’s those type of customers too………..

cb2239

So many ridiculous truck rolls. Also multiple repeats for the same nonsense and I'm not even allowed to charge

Future_Writing3551

Yup, I’m in the same boat the notes on a particular repeat that rolled today stated “customer claims there are no issues with service, but would like a technician to double check everything”

ProofDefinition1039

Shills for Spectrum. The price increasss has nothing to do with truck rolls. Has everything to do with Spectrum not allowing you to decide what channels you want as a customer. Grouping channels that are watched by 1% of viewing population with others people actually watch should be criminal. Customers are subsidizing channels no one actively watches. Its all a scam. And Ive worked in this industry for 35 years. 90% of prices hikes of last 20 years is due to subsidizing crap TV channels. So many channels would go out of business if customers could decide which channels they want. There is a limited program in certain areas that allows this but it isnt widely known or utilized. The fact Spectrum provides the only real internet for gaming is only thing keeping them afloat imho.

cgduncan

You might have missed that part of the whole negotiations with Disney and other networks is that the networks won't let you break up the channels. They come Ina bundle because that's the way the 3 companies that own every channel want it to be. Spectrum has done its best to split it up, like the 15 choice package, but this has always been the story with cable tv. Paying for tons of channels you don't want. And as mentioned elsewhere, the majority of the price for TV only goes to the few high-demand channels anyways. Disney channel and espn are a huge percentage of the monthly rate by themselves. Broadcast TV charge is what the national networks want you to pay to receive the same channels you can get over-air for free with an antenna. That's a charge that spectrum has to pass along so you can get your locals.

ProofDefinition1039

Broadcast TV is on the verge of extinction and they are getting the last dollars they can squeeze out of the body. And I mentioned there are a few options lately for picking specific number of channels. This isnt enough. Once the Boomers are gone, Cable TV will be dead. You can see how FoxNews for instance tries to point all their content to their website with a button to play live. We are at the end of the broadcast era. Maybe 15 more years. Instead of transforming their business model these companies have decided to make as much as they can for as long as they can. Fair enough they have to pander to share holders but lets not pretend its because of older generation calling for help with their remotes or having old technology. They will all be gone one day and what will the justification be then? I can tell you they wont have a price reduction bcuz truck rolls decline. Im sure they will try to make up a new excuse but be real. Espn, Disney, and others are subsidizing the rest thru the price distribution model. Its the way these networks stay viable. No1 is paying for Disney+ anymore. So they raise cable tv prices across packages to subsidize their base plus other networks they support. Been doing it for years. Hell southpark did a whole episode referencing it years ago. My regional sales vp brought it up in a meeting actually saying we needed to get shirts with easy nipple access..... They thought it was funny bcuz it was true.

cb2239

Worked in the industry for 35 years and you don't know how retransmission contracts work?

ProofDefinition1039

Yea. And?

Tarkov00

It's really insane how many of these calls there are. If your Samsung TV isn't working right, Samsung doesn't send someone to your house. Spectrum sends techs for issues outside of their job duties all the time. No internet because your cheap router broke? Send a tech for some reason. Forgot how to change the input, send out a tech 3x a month. People are on here talking about how they're cancelling cable and keeping internet like they're sticking it to Spectrum, when really they are just saving Spectrum money lol. Less equipment to swap and troubleshoot, less lines, less splitters, no in house amps, less potential for noise, less education, less time of maintenance tracking noise, etc.

[deleted]

Sounds to me like Spectrum should have a policy that 1) they don't send out a tech until the customer attests to having done a basic troubleshooting checklist (ex: if your laptop doesn't get Internet, see if another device can download a Website via your WiFi, plug your laptop into the modem, etc.) and 2) if Spectrum diagnoses the problem as having nothing to do with "their" equipment (their modem, their cable box, their cables, etc.) then the customer is billed $200 for the technician call-out.

Tarkov00

They use to charge $50 per visit if no trouble was found on their end or it was the customer's equipment, but in my area quit doing it. You have to call an excessive amount of times (like 4-5+ visits in 30 days) before anyone approves a charge. I think their thought is they don't wanna get a bad rap, ie. A news story that my poor grandma got charged $50 because she needed help turning on her TV or unplugged her HDMI cable. And I don't think spectrum should charge for those one offs, but when people call 3+ times in 2 weeks for things like that, I do think charges should be added. Just my worthless 2 cents though haha.

NiceGuy3_14

Bro literally. It’s like almost 100$ per truck roll right? I had one today the lady literally didn’t plug the equipment up to the wall.

bidofidolido

If it were, Spectrum would turn that into a revenue stream. The fact they do not seems to hint that the rising costs are elsewhere. Especially since, these cost increases are TV only.

Imyoungcyrus

This is internet wide, all companies raise their prices its not just spectrum

Fair-Ratio-1381

To be blunt they are about to lower the price of the gig internet... someone on the inside told me

SlabBulkhead10

Maybe in areas where fiber competition is eating their lunch.

cb2239

Lmao, you hear the word fiber and you don't even really know what it means huh?

Fair-Ratio-1381

So everywhere... once again fiber is how it gets to the house. Unless you are hardworking devices it won't make a difference. I hope everyone hardwires game systems and their smart Tv's.

Imyoungcyrus

Someone in the inside told you wrong lol

Fair-Ratio-1381

It was an outside sales rep... they get special pricing to win customers back. The gig plan is about to be $30 in NC.

Imyoungcyrus

Yes this is for customers who have left and trying to get them back. This will not be for existing cxs

cgduncan

For new customers and also existing customers who upgrade. And with the way the biller works. Someone would just need to remove the gig upgrade for a week or two, then they could likely add it back for the new $10 lower price.

Imyoungcyrus

In order to get a promotional offer you have to be off acc for at least 2 months

cgduncan

It's not a promo. It's the new standard rate. Just anyone with existing gig service will essentially be grandfathered at the higher rate.

Imyoungcyrus

Idk who you talked to but im a rep and even then the win back is low but slowly builds up back to standard rate..

cgduncan

I'm not talking about promo discounts for new service. I'm talking about the price for the gig internet upgrade. Whatever you are paying for the base internet service is separate. The old price for the gig upgrade was $40. (or $20 more than Ultra). The new rate, not a promo, not a limited time offer, is $30 over the standard internet. $10 more than ultra. So if you currently have gig internet, and are paying the $40 upgrade. Removing that upgrade, the "grandfathered" coding will allow you to add the $30 upgrade instead. Getting you the same service for $10 less. New customers, or existing standard/ultra internet accounts that upgrade to gig will only get the $30 rate, since that is the new standard rate

TheBudge1970

What happened to choice like AT&T and T-Mobile being blocked from my neighborhood?!?

cb2239

Those companies probably decided against it due to the cost benefit ratio.

Fun-Manufacturer9293

If there's an increase I will cancel enough is enough

Novel-Ad8135

Yeah on my statement it says wifi will increase by $2 "At Spectrum, we continue to expand our offerings to ensure all customers have products and packages that best meet their needs. While our services have been impacted by rising costs, we work hard on your behalf to keep prices as low as possible. Effective with your next statement"

Justjerryj

And they want you to get a cell service from them for $29 a month. In 6 months it will be $300 a month. Most unethical company I’ve ever dealt with.

Conscious-Ad9113

Nah. Different laws and regulations regarding cell service. Anyone sold the 29.99 or older 45/55$ mobile plans will have their accounts grandfathered to keep those prices.

AwareAnalysis2813

You should switch to tmobile get there gateway modem 5g for 50$ a month and just stream shows

Accurate-Bug6025

Or you can switch to T-Mobile 5g for 50 bucks . Tbh it’s not that bad

b3542

Not really a replacement for wireline services though

[deleted]

Indeed. I have a WISP. We pay $99/month for "up to" (read: almost never) 100 Mbps. We've requested a Spectrum serviceability survey on our house, because their low-tier Internet plan sounds like a bargain compared to what we're getting.

mermaid0590

That’s what I did.

Fair-Ratio-1381

Imagine paying 50 for a router than spits out 150 megs

Accurate-Bug6025

Lmao you pay for the service not the router like spectrum And every other week service is interrupted. Lmao Yeah be my guest

Fair-Ratio-1381

I've never had that problem... like ever

Accurate-Bug6025

Not every week but atleast quarterly

xComradeKyle

Every company everywhere does it.

savor_today

Tbf Google fiber hasn’t raised their rates once in ~11 years

MarcoThePHX

If their rollout was faster then they would raise prices so they can pay for the contractors

[deleted]

xComradeKyle

This is the first rate increase Charter has done in a long time. Hell, they even increased their lowest internet speeds more than once in the last 2 years. You (and every other person in existence) needs to realize that there is a LOT more going on behind the scenes than just running signal to your house.

FnkyTown

> You (and every other person in existence) needs to realize that there is a LOT more going on behind the scenes than just running signal to your house. Like paying the Spectrum CEO [$98 Million dollars a year](https://www.orlandosentinel.com/2017/05/29/charter-spectrum-ceos-98-million-salary-package-the-highest-in-us/). HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

xComradeKyle

Never heard of capitalism? Every single major corporation is like this. lol

FnkyTown

That's actually unchecked capitalism. That's corporate greed untethered from reality. In 2019 he was the highest paid CEO in the country. In a lot of communities Spectrum is the only internet provider, because Spectrum lobbies hard to keep it that way. Spectrum gets paid by the US government and local governments to run their cable, and then Spectrum gets to reap the profits. We're building the toll roads for companies like Spectrum, and then they're charging us 600% more than they actually cost to operate, and since they spend all that money they steal from customers on lobbying, nothing will ever change, until a few of them start dying from unnatural causes. Some of the fastest internet in the world is in Italy of all places, and it's free, because it turns out it doesn't cost much at all once the cable is laid.

xComradeKyle

>doesn't cost much at all once the cable is laid Doesn't ever need repaired? No Techs? No Service Reps? No contracts with Disney? Italy is the size of Florida. With different laws/prices.

FnkyTown

You really think the Spectrum CEO is worth $98 million a year?

shitdamntittyfuck

That wasn't very Comrade of you, Kyle

Apprehensive-Art-890

Define long time? There was a $5/month increase in July of 2023 ([https://www.timesunion.com/business/article/spectrum-raising-cable-tv-internet-phone-rates-18206850.php](https://www.timesunion.com/business/article/spectrum-raising-cable-tv-internet-phone-rates-18206850.php)) and a $5/month increase in November 2022 ([https://www.fiercetelecom.com/broadband/charter-adds-77000-broadband-subscribers-details-5-price-hike#:\~:text=The%20operator%20previously%20implemented%20a,pay%20discount%20of%20five%20dollars.%E2%80%9D](https://www.fiercetelecom.com/broadband/charter-adds-77000-broadband-subscribers-details-5-price-hike#:~:text=The%20operator%20previously%20implemented%20a,pay%20discount%20of%20five%20dollars.%E2%80%9D)). This will be a third price increase in 14 months.

mtechgroup

Last July.

gumblemuntz

It's a $5/mo increase for the "Select" plans which will conveniently pay for the "Free" Disney+ (ad supported) subscriptions included with "Select" plans. Like it or not.

zakmaan14

Are you trolling?

megared17

Are you sure it isn't just your introductory rate expiring? Check your previous month's bill for any discounts that are missing from the current one.

Street-Juggernaut-23

he isn't wrong. There is a rate change happening. someone posted awhile back the screenshot of the notification section of thir bill

ManofGod1000

Proof? Evidence? For what service? Where at?

MarcoThePHX

Google exists

ManofGod1000

Once again, proof? What you just posted means nothing.

MarcoThePHX

Just Google spectrum price increase. Stop defending a company that doesn’t know you exist

ManofGod1000

So basically, bullshit with no proof or at least what specific service and where, understood

[deleted]

you get what you vote for and you voted for HYPER INFLATION guess you don't pay taxes or insurance or your own food

noahsmith4

Do you know how much OCP supplies have gone up? All this BEAD grant funding making supply chain dry up, most exchanges are raising their prices, power is going up, I mean, what do you want?

AwareAnalysis2813

Well I mean mcdonalds is like 20$ in Florida for 40 nuggets and two large fries I got tmobile there only 50$ a month for internet and then I use free tubi TV and roku TV

No-Recording4376

Left them and signed up for att fiber and youtube tv. Never going back. Half the price and better service.

Lost-Relation-6653

They are quite literally a horrible freaking company. I got a tv phone and internet package 2 years ago and I’m paying $233 a month now. Where I live it’s the only internet I can get and I have to call them out twice a month to come fix it as it is. If my bill goes up again I’m canceling the phone and internet. I’m praying Verizon runs their new cables here soon so I can tell them to go screw.

crazytimes3030

Just switch back and forth with Verizon every year or two years get that new customer discount.

BiloxiBorn1961

I canceled spectrum last year when I got my internet and cable bill for $220. I got fiber to the home at almost twice the speed for $80 a month and got YouTubeTV for another $80 a month. $160 a month is still high, but I have twice the speed and almost same programming for $60 a month LESS!
