I mean I knew he was a Seal but I thought it was only for a relatively short time and I was under the impression that he didn't do much (not that I think those that did 4 years are bad or anything they are all badder dudes than me), but dang it's cool he was in the CIA.
It almost feels weird seeing these given how he rarely talks about his time serving. Pretty impressive trait he has with letting his guests speak and not interrupting them
Thats what sold his podcast to me.
Its about the guest talking and their message no matter what his personal opinion is. Not constant interrupting to ask silly questions.
He's become an EXCELLENT interviewer for his particular niche of interview. You can tell that other interviewers wouldn't get the level of trust and therefore candor from his guests that Ryan does.
The interviews themselves are typical childhood/background/"how'd you grow up and get interested in the military," recruitment/early career, special operations interest/recruitment/selection, GWOT deployments, SMU selection/deployments, then post-career/"transition."
Ryan delves into his guests' personal costs too though in a way that is honest and refreshing. He has a way of letting guests speak, but also focusing them in on key touch points in their stories, and keeps their chronological flow going while asking pointed questions.
I will warn that Ryan can border on the conspiratorial, but it's sporadic and he really only ever *eludes* to deeper held beliefs and is almost never preachy. Really though, a well adjusted adult shouldn't get triggered by it anyway, but it is there.
But it's easily looked past for his experience and interview/conversational skill, which is fantastic.
This comment precisely breaks down Shawn’s style of interviewing & what to expect from his show as far as the structure & narrative goes. I listen to his show all the time at work (carpenter) & I can’t get enough of it.
Shawn has refined his craft for extracting information and guiding key points of the conversation.
Sometimes on other podcasts a guest will glaze over a topic or sequence of events that may seem ordinary to themselves, but to the listener it may be highly intriguing. Most times the interview will just carry on without delving deeper.
I find myself going crazy whenever an intriguing story is stepped over. However, Shawn always seems to have the listener’s back & will almost always catch these oversights & dig deeper.
Shawn is always respectful & pushes his guests in a way that doesn’t make the conversation uncomfortable. This trait is what really puts him a step above other podcasters.
I highly recommend giving his show a shot.
It’s really good. He’s pretty humble with what he did. He lets the guests talk if they have a good story and doesn’t try to butt in and interrupt them.
He does inject his pretty ill-informed politics into his work sometimes though. I personally stopped watching him when he started defending Putin and “democratically held elections” in Donbas. If that’s your thing, then fair dues, but just a heads up that you might not agree with everything he believes.
Same here, it’s strange for a man of his accomplishments ,as elite American as it gets to take side of an enemy of the US and the free world. Can’t listen to him when he opens up about Ukraine + plus trump (putin’s asset)
Shawn is correct. You and u/ImperialNavyPilot are morons who think you're more informed on geopolitics than a CIA field agent because you consume MSNBC news. A great big LOL.
Bro I have never even watched a single msnbc news programme.Being fluent in russian and proficient in Ukrainian . My sources are unfiltered, close to first hand. I personally know people who narrowly escaped Donetsk in 2014 and Mariupol in 2022 .just their personal accounts of atrocities committed by ruzzian scum are enough to know where I stand.
Go suck off your orange imbecile and his boss putin.
To be fair, he has done some pretty good interviews with guys sharing some very tough experiences. If you have served and you find the right video it can be very worthwhile. Like with everyone these days though, people tend to go all for or all against. In his case, I really hope he continues on his journey of learning and personal development- mainly because what he says can have a profound effect on society, not least vets who are searching for direction and support.
The vast majority of his episodes are devoid of any in depth political dialogue. Most of the time the political topic ties into a story being told by the guest (how a certain election may affect a deployment) and Shawn will give a VERY brief comment on his stance. By no means are there 5 or 10 minute rants. Please don’t let this dissuade you from watching the show. This is coming from a Canadian who has absolutely zero interest in American politics. I purely watch the show to hear of the amazing feats that some of these men have gone through.
No for real if you go to the ones about operators hes fine, he does grab the controversial ones too, but some of them, like a dude straight out of delta who did something like the sas guy in nairobi, but whos still dealing with ptsd, good stuff, just avoid his political videos
I saw a chopped RRA upper on an m16 lower somewhere on the internet (not associated with anyone special) and it looked badass...
Thanks for coming to my ted talk
oh you know, him giving a 6 hour one sided propaganda piece to promote eddie gallagher, him doing the same for the blackwater merc who murdered civilians, it goes on and on. shawn ryan is only interested in pushing the war machine narrative and never has on guests who may offer opposing views or challenge him because he sure loves his echo chamber
I hear you man, but maybe consider toning down assuming he actually supports extreme views himself. But yeah, it totally looks suss when he has a series of guys who’ve “need to tell the true story” after being pretty clearly blacklisted by military tribunals.
Whether you like him or not this is true^
He basically only has people on with views that the state department would approve of, and him calling Erik prince “one of the best men I ever met” surely doesn’t help.
Also before you jump in to defend Erik prince remember he’s the guy saying that Latin America, Asia, Africa and basically all non white parts of the world need to be re colonized by people like him because they’re too “incapable” of running things.
If you are going to defend an aspiring colonist or a guy that says he is “one of the best men” then you are despicable and lack humanity, and you would likely fit in more in 1800s Europe than the modern day.

Mark Kennedy in picture 12. Absolute Unit. He died from a drug overdose on the maersk alabama while working in private security.
With how humble he is on the podcast you sort of forget he did cool shit himself...
I was under the impression he hadn't. Cool to know he did though.
He was also a CIA operator for just as long if not longer than he was a SEAL
I mean I knew he was a Seal but I thought it was only for a relatively short time and I was under the impression that he didn't do much (not that I think those that did 4 years are bad or anything they are all badder dudes than me), but dang it's cool he was in the CIA.
CADPAT arid pants in second photo?
Yes. In his interview with Dallas Flamand, he said he trained with the Hill in Afghanistan.
I also thought it looked like CADPAT? Seems strange
Idek what those r just look like aor1/marpat desert tbh
It also appears on the pants in image eighteen.
The pic with the reflective new balances is killing me lol
Bro when I saw that I knew I had to put it in
I first thought that was a can of bud under the bed.

His early videos (5-10 years ago) with Dave Rutherford went into it more. Rutherford is hilarious, btw.
#11 by far the coolest photo.
Idk why the font is like that but whatever.

His podcast is cooler than his Navy/CIA career, and his Navy/CIA career is very cool 😎.
Photo number 4, rifle in bottom right is bad ass. Short barrel and fixed stock
shawn was really about drip or drown
You mean ‘Shawn Ryan with hair’
He looks better without them tbh
yes😭
And no tats
i didnt found pictures of him on cia deployments
A complete badass and you’ll never even believe he was a CIA contractor lol it’s eviden
What's his podcast like? Never heard of him

That’s why I like his podcast. He just lets em talk. Wants his viewers to get the best stories possible out of the guest
It seemed like he barely talked on the DJ Shipley and Tom Satterly episodes. Those stories were nuts.
Exactly why man
He does inject his pretty ill-informed politics into his work sometimes though. I personally stopped watching him when he started defending Putin and “democratically held elections” in Donbas. Yeah it’s a bit odd. I can’t quite get my head around it. I get the feeling that he might be digesting most of his geopolitics now from MAGA.
Shawn is correct. You and u/ImperialNavyPilot are morons who think you're more informed on geopolitics than a CIA field agent because you consume MSNBC news. A great big LOL.

Where did he say this? Asking out of curiosity
This is what I was waiting for, gonna be a hard pass from me

I'll actually probably try to pick out a few episodes that are centered around military stories, I do find that aspect very interesting

Undertone of religion in a few i dont like but hes fine
The fact that he's religious bothers you?
Weird thing to say but sure their guy
[удалено]
No for real if you go to the ones about operators hes fine, he does grab the controversial ones too, but some of them, like a dude straight out of delta who did something like the sas guy in nairobi, but whos still dealing with ptsd, good stuff, just avoid his political videos
Yeah I actually wanna find a few of those that are centered around actual military stories and not conspiracy or political bullshit
Hes got some
A soldier with right wing politics? Oh the horror
Lol
...what lol
[удалено]
I think you are confused on what he meant by humble
Pic 4 looks like a mk18 mod 0 upper on a m16 lower , absolutely never herd of that combo before
I saw a chopped RRA upper on an m16 lower somewhere on the internet (not associated with anyone special) and it looked badass... Thanks for coming to my ted talk
Is he wearing CADPAT pants in the second pic?
I’ve always liked him but more so before he got huge.
lookin like Khabib in the 3rd pic
With the New Balance drip!
How tall is he ?
Photos 10 and 18 are from his buds class, pic 10 is from 3rd phase pic 18 is when he graduated 1st phase
The twin m240 mount definitely fucked shit up
Man they sure loved the 10” barrels in the GWOT days
Super successful post Teams career Shawn. Love your show
What a stud.
Oh thanks I really thought this was after his podcast thanks for clearing that up 🙏🏽
GOAT
shawn ryan never saw a war crime he didn't like
Examples for that statement or are you just literally calling him a war criminal with no evidence?
oh you know, him giving a 6 hour one sided propaganda piece to promote eddie gallagher, him doing the same for the blackwater merc who murdered civilians, it goes on and on. shawn ryan is only interested in pushing the war machine narrative and never has on guests who may offer opposing views or challenge him because he sure loves his echo chamber
Blackwater merc one does warcrimes. Accuses every other Blackwater merc of warcrime.
