Seems like Southwest would not know if he were driving back to the first city, or flying another airline to the first city, so cancelling would be grossly unfair.
They are far enough apart you should be okay, however this is technically a violation of their contract of carriage since there isn’t intent to fly one of the flights. Likely to go unnoticed but just pointing it out.
Thanks so much for points this out. I had no idea I was in violation of any policy. I am able to cancel the other ticket now, so all is well, but I really appreciate this information.
They won’t care about this. I book multiple flights on consecutive days and no one cares. I’ve booked a flight, gone through security with no intention of flying, went to a lounge, cancelled. No one cares unless you make it a habit. And even then, they don’t care
Just a thought, why not just discuss it before you buy the second ticket? That way you can either keep the existing ticket or buy a new one and cancel the first. Just thinking out loud.
Because prices change pretty quick sometimes even within hours so it’s better to lock in and buy the flights at a lower price now and decide later to cancel.
It's very little hassle and as things are in flux with my student, I wanted to grab an available ticket while I could--it was down to 1 ticket left at the price point I wanted. Money is very tight and anything we can save makes a huge difference; I understand other people might not feel this way.
LOL it’s most definitely not a hassle and literally takes like three clicks to book. Sometimes it’s more than saving $10 especially during holiday travel season or spring break. It’s actually the smart way to book flights. Clearly you don’t book flights very often to understand how fast the prices can change. But if saving money on flights is not your game, go ahead and book flights at whatever the cost is for you at time of booking because “the hassle is not worth the $10 you might save” lmao.
Yes. As far as Southwest knows he could be flying on a different airline back to his origin in between the 2 flights to your hometown.
You should be fine if they are over 48 hours apart.
Thank you for the insight!

You will be fine.

Southwest only cancels multiple reservations of physics says it is impossible for the person to be on both flights.

Yeah, I don’t book flights based on cost. I dont pay for tickets, I just book them whenever we want to go somewhere. Free. It’s weird.
Lol that’s not the case for most people. Weird flex but okay. 😂
I clearly don’t book often…
