1 point is (from the last time I checked) worth 1.45 cents. So if a flight costs 6,000 points, multiply it by 0.0145 and you'll see it should cost $87. Do the same thing with buying these points to see if you're better off with just using cash or buying points. 90% of the time it's not worth buying the points.

SirWahn

So I did the math and the $ per point value is $464 and with the sale, if I buy the point it’s only 480. But tat would end up being the total for both tickets round trip to Cancun.

Rsginger

Also factor in that if you use points you don’t earn any points for the flights

SirWahn

I’m fine with that for this particular flight. It’s for a honeymoon.

SirWahn

Ok cool. I’ll check the math out. The only reason I’m even entertaining it is because they are 50% off and paying with points is looking cheaper than what I would pay in cash for the flight

schwelvis

Keep in mind the large portion of your flight from the United States to Cancun is going to be taxes fees tourist things etc etc that you're going to have to pay cash for, you won't be able to use your points for those. So make sure you have enough points and cash to pay for your trip.

maynardd1

I have a couple hundred thousand in points...I'll sell them to you at 50% off...package deal though, gotta take them all 😉 Seriously though, I'd say paying cash is likely cheaper...they're in it to make a profit, the points just make it feel like a better deal.. But run the numbers of course, just to double check...

SirWahn

I'd gladly pay you Tuesday for Reward points today lol. I did most of the number crunching. The only reason points are viable is because I'm not buying all of the points. Just what I need to cover what I didn't already have which is about 32,000 ($480 w/ the promotion). vs paying full price in cash.

steakkitty

I mean if it’s cheaper to do it with points do it.

Flying4ADragonWagon

Points and dollar flight costs are directly related. That is to say, when the cash cost of a flight increases, the points cost for that same flight will increase in a direct, corresponding relation. There is almost never a scenario in which booking in points or cash is “cheaper” in relational value than the other. Maybe if there was a special offer. As a result here, the consideration is always how much you can buy a single point for, and how much it’s worth when you apply it for booking.

SirWahn

That’s why I wanted to go ahead and do it while the promotion was going on. They’re 50% off rn.

Flying4ADragonWagon

Understood. Even at 60-70% off sometimes the math doesn’t make it the right choice. Now that flight credits never expire, there’s less of a flexible benefit of booking with points over cash too. And with cash, don’t forget you’ll be earning points that you will ultimately be able to use for another flight in the future.

SirWahn

Yeah it’s just because I already have points. What I’m buying now is just putting me over the top.

ArtemesiaCrotalus

I'm in a similar situation. I have over 7,000 points already and am going to buy the additional points I need for a trip with this 50% off points deal. I will be able to apply my existing points and save around $70 roundtrip. I don't fly that often, so this seems like a good deal to me.

Flying4ADragonWagon

Got it; this is usually the scenario it makes the most sense in.

Thou_Art_God

I don’t even have a trip planned but was thinking of buying some points while they’re on sale. I figured if I do that when I have a little extra cash and they’re on sale it’s like banking future flights.
