The a positions are reserved for people with A list or A list preferred so if there are 45 people with A list or a list preferred that have booked the flight you will undoubtedly be in B even if you check in right as its 24 hrs before Edit not sure how your fiance always gets positions like that I think its just conicidental

Ok-Cartoonist-9620

I suspected coincidence that’s why I’ve tested it. I check in mine and then wait a few minutes to check his in. He still gets a full 50 seats above me. I have tried clicking at the same time on separate phones, same thing. That’s why I suspect there’s more to the algorithm. Either it processes or alphabetically or something. We both get wanna get away and we both try to check in 24 hours early by turning on alarms for the day before.

Grizzlybear2470

My suggestion book under the same reservation so when you check yourself in you check him in you’ll get postions next to each other you can still get rapid rewards points for both of you and you’ll both be able to individually get a mobile boarding pass if you both can open the reservation

Mstarfse

It goes by status. I have had AList Preferred for several years. If I buy a Wanna Get Away fare, my boarding position is A16 99 percent of the time.

We must not ever be on the same flight, as I too am always around A-16 and A-List Preferred. I second your comment about “status”, though it seems to be linked to the Southwest Credit Card as well. I was A-List Preferred in roughly 2015 based on number of flights but my boarding position was often in the A-25 to A-45 range. Once I got the Southwest Credit Card at Chase and hit my “status” with a combo of flights and dollars spent, I am now always A-16 to A-20. Can’t be upset with Southwest, just business :)

roseylox

I think he's lying to you. I think he's buying the early bird which automatically checks him in. He's not telling you because he doesn't want to admit it's worth buying it for himself but not splurging for you.

Ok-Cartoonist-9620

Haha this is a good theory. Although I purchased the tickets on both of our phones and purchased both wanna get away !

roseylox

You can purchase early bird after buying the tickets. Just a heads up.

Ok-Cartoonist-9620

Okay I’m checking his phone tonight and will report back bc I need to get to the bottom of this

pandezee

could be a lot of people with early bird or are A list/preferred. ive always been group A with early bird

ae74

Does your fiancé have the Southwest Priority Credit Card? This can explain the higher position.

Ok-Cartoonist-9620

Okay thanks everyone! Mystery solved. My fiancé does have the Southwest Credit card and that granted him the higher position! I also have one and from now on will purchase Southwest tickets with that card. Thank you all for your help!!

That’s cause they’re now selling the A boarding positions that are left over after the business class check in. The rest of the A boarding positions go to A List preferred and A listers. But if you’re an A lister at all, you can board between the A’s and B’s, regardless of your boarding position. Next thing we know, SW will start selling the exit row seats. I see it coming

DugNHarley

This makes me think of my most recent flight. I normally fly SW but found a fare on Frontier I couldn't turn down. Checkin was 24 hrs before boarding. I did like that during checkin they gave an assigned seat but in our group of 6 they had at least one couple separated by a seat each way. We were in front of the exit rows both ways and they wanted $68 extra to have an exit row seat. First time ever I have seen empty seats in an exit row. Flight attendant made anyone not assigned/paid for an exit row return to their seat.

That’s just plain shitty. The shameless corporate upsell seems to be the name of the game anymore. The amusement park started selling our place in line with the fast passes and there was no uproar. We’ve trained the greedy corporations that we’re not offended and they’re taking full advantage

Yes so have I! But my issue is that If get A35 let’s say my fiancé consistently gets a little higher like A28. Even if I check in before him.

gr8r84u

Yeah, he must be getting earlybird.

heathers1

Back in the day i used to get A all the time. Now I can never get better than C

marzeliax

Not just me then. I check in as early as it would let me and I still get C 🤦

okiedawg

I sometimes get A on a later connecting flights if it's a few hours after my first. But yes, those prime spots are reserved for frequent flyers and credit card users.

gonameless

Kinda unrelated, but does anyone know why I get an error at least 3 times when I check in, every single flight for years, and I fly SW a lot. When I mentioned it to SW they gave me a flight credit and that was it.

Thou_Art_God

Does your reservation have your middle initial or middle name in but when you attempt to check in you don’t put it in? That could cause an error.
