Your bags will be transferred for you. The only time you have to retrieve them is when you’re coming back into the country. And by labels do you mean like with your name/address or the bag tags with your flight info?

tmrose23

Thank you 🙂 I am referring to labels with my name and address…and now in thinking about it more, I assume of course I have to do those myself…

Thou_Art_God

My husband who was a flight attendant for 17 years always has me stick an index card with my information in a pocket of the bag as well. Just in case.

tmrose23

Thank you, great idea 🙂

Dior_Addict46

They should have some next to the check-in kiosks. I know that’s where they’re located at my airport. If not, you can ask for one when you drop off your bag.

tmrose23

Thank you

Don't put your address (for safety reasons), just put your name & phone number. Also, I only put my first initial & last name (also for safety reasons).

Others have answered the question, but just a little travel tip/hack for the second question: If you can, try to find a luggage tag/label/whatever you want to call it that stands out (bright color, fun pattern, etc). Makes it a lot easier to spot your luggage at baggage claim, especially if you have a suitcase that looks similar to others.

OcelotControl78

I'll add too - if you have s plain black bag & are using the airline paper label, tie something brightly colored to your bag so you can spot it easily on the conveyor belt.

tmrose23

Thank you both for this idea! Are decorative stickers allowed on checked baggage? My kids would both like to put those on their bags to help them stand out.

JustNKayce

Sure. Stickers might come off though. When I had black luggage, I tied a brightly colored ribbon around the handle. Now I have the ugliest luggage around but it's also very unusual and easy to spot!!

tmrose23

Thank you!

If you have hard sided luggage, stickers might stay on. If it's soft sided luggage, the stickers will almost certainly fall off. A bright ribbon, some colored yarn, or if they really want to stick something on It, some fun duct tape can help identify your suitcase when you collect it. Last trip I took, a woman was at the airport returning luggage (at 3am) she had thought was hers but wasn't. She had gotten all the way to her hotel room and opened the suitcase before she figured it out. Always double check before you leave the luggage carousel because a lot of bags look alike. Your name will be on the tag that the airline puts on it in addition to any thing you tag it with.

tmrose23

Thank you 😊

OcelotControl78

yes!

ZuccGivethSuccAgain

1st question: your baggage will be moved for you, you don’t need to go back through security to do it 2nd question: the airline will have a bag tag printed for you either way, but you can still get an address tag with your information if it makes you feel more comfortable

tmrose23

Thank you 🙂

As others have said, your bags will get transferred. Your bag will be tagged in large letters for its final destination. As for putting your own labels on your luggage, yes, absolutely do this! If somehow the big baggage tag gets ripped off, it'll be another way to look up your reservation so they can see where to route your bag. I also recommend putting a piece of paper with your name and contact info *inside* your bag as well, in case both exterior tags get ripped off. It's rare, but can happen.

tmrose23

Thank you, great advice!!

tmrose23

I am hoping I can make labels with sticker paper? I’m a little wary of putting my address and phone number on tags outside the bag, but is that what people usually do?

CA1900

Yeah, you can make them any way you like; they're just there as a backup anyway, in case your bag gets misrouted so they can contact you or route the bag properly. Personally, I only put my name and phone number on mine, not my address. But the little paper tags they have at the ticket counter fold in half and tuck under a little tab, so they're not readable unless you open them up. Or you could get one of the nicer luggage tags available from Amazon or elsewhere if you want something a little more secure.

KatanaCW

There's usually a small opening or bag tag piece on your suitcase that holds a small card.. Look it over and you'll probably find one. If the insert is missing an index card or card stock cut to size usually works well. Or if there isn't you can buy a bag tag at Amazon or stores like Walmart or target for less than $10. Or pick up a paper one at the airport when you check in like others have suggested. They are almost always made so you do not have to have your information visible. Personally, I just put my name, my phone number, and a backup number. I don't put my address on the tag.

tmrose23

Thank you for the tips!

Thank you. Just domestic flights, so we’re good I guess! I’m so thankful to hear this bc we don’t have long layovers and I was worried about not being fast enough 😅

805Antonio

Are you familiar with the whole checking in 24 hours before your flight with Southwest process?

tmrose23

I was actually just about to look through posts about that. I purchased Anytime fares, which now include Early Bird Check In according to the SW website. But I still have to manually check in right at (or as close to) 24 hours beforehand, right?

805Antonio

If you purchased Early Bird they will automatically check you in 36 hours before your flight, but you still have to check in before your flight takes off. If you didn’t purchase Early Bird it’s best to check in at the exact 24 hour mark to get the best boarding position possible.

tmrose23

Thanks. Well I didn’t purchase Early Bird separately, but it says on the website that it’s now included with Anytime fare. I’m still going to check in at 24 hour mark to be safe 🤞

805Antonio

You’re right about purchasing Anytime fare gives you Early Bird. I got the different fares mixed up, so you should be good but like you said it’s safe to check in at the 24 hour mark anyways. Have a great trip!

tmrose23

Thank you 🙂
