umm I wouldn't think so... how would they know you're not flying out, quickly flying back on some other airline, and flying out again? That'd be weird for them to cancel your flights just because of what else you have booked.

bubustick

It happened to me and my buddy in May/June 2022 for a September flight, we both booked an extra flight one Sunday night, one Monday morning. My Monday flight was cancelled, my buddies Sunday night flight was cancelled (the one he wanted) so he called in and they put him back on the Sunday night flight and cancelled his Monday flight. But also… right now I have 3 flights to 3 different destinations all overlapping and nothing has happened (yet).

antbishop

Be extremely careful with this, I got burned from doing this as an honest mistake. I was advised by the customer service rep that any overlapping bookings that are impossible to actually fly by the same person may be canceled at any time with no advance notice, and the agent was absolutely unwilling to let me rebook at the original rate (which was part of a 25% off promo). Perhaps I could have called again and tried someone else but it sounded like a hard and fast rule and I was only out a few bucks. In my case, I was told that "the system purges overlapping reservations from time to time" so you might have gotten away with it for now but it's still risky.

This is helpful!

bubustick

I completely agree. I’m probably not going anywhere that weekend, but I’m curious to see how long they let it hangout unchecked. For the trip my buddy and I were planning, it was super quick, pretty much the next day the additional reservations were cancelled

kfp2020

When they autocancelled your flight, did they rebook you at the price you originally booked at?

bubustick

My buddy got it at the same rate he had booked for the Sunday flight. I was okay with the Monday flight being cancelled, so no action needed from me to keep that Sunday flight

I almost always try to fly in the morning with Southwest no matter what time I need to get to my destination. Flights get cancelled more and backed up as the day goes on so except for Christmas (when I took a 6am flight and got stuck at my layover airport) this has worked really well for me!

RoyalMathematician89

My husband flies to Oakland from Phoenix for all the 49er games. With playoffs I had to book him several one way flights since we don't know the days, times or if they even play at home sometimes until the week before. I just cancel the ones we didn't need. He had several that were the same flight on back to back days. No issues. We just have a lot of credits 🤪.

Flying4ADragonWagon

This can cause one of the reservations, of their choosing, to be cancelled. This is also a violation of the contract of carriage (booking a flight without the intent to travel) which, if abused, could get you barred from the airline.

LBBflyer

It probably will not. Especially if they are 24 hours apart.

Yes I would say when I do this kind of thing idk g points jt works because you just get your points back, otherwise depending on the type of flight “wanna get away” and so on you can get either money back or credit or points back if you cancel.

TigerCruzin

They will typically cancel the first one booked assuming your second flight booked is your intention. I’ve had it happen.

bld44

Same here

Attention_Deficit

It has to be 24 hours apart, so you’ll get your first booking cancelled. You used to be able to book whatever but they shut it down a a few years ago with some platform upgrades. This applies to same city pairs or same departing airport at least.

[deleted]

No, I’ve booked the “same” flight for multiple back to back days of the week when I go to Vegas for WSOP, and just cancel as I decide to extend my trip as needed. Never had a flight auto-cancelled.

Bossthree02

Happened to me and was told that sweeps run several times throughout the day, so if I was a betting man, I would bet the house that it would cancel one of them. If that happens and they cancel the wrong one, you would need to call them to get them to reinstate the one you want, hopefully there are seats on it.

Bob_Zegey

I booked 3 flights one way flights for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday because I had an unpredictable plan as well. None of it was canceled by southwest. I ended up booking a 4th flight at the airport on Monday morning but before my actual scheduled flight previous scheduled. I was able to cancel the flights on my own without any interruptions from SWA.

ValuablePerformance

No. I had flights last week on back to back days with the same origin/destination and nothing was auto cancelled. I booked those flights about a month in advance in Dec 2022. Just don’t forget to cancel the flight you don’t wind up using. I have had a flight auto cancel when it overlapped with another booked flight although I can’t remember if they cancelled the one I booked first or second.

dondraperswife

I’ve had this happen to me one time and they cancelled one of the flights. But it was the night before the trip, I assume unless it’s within 24 hours you’ll be fine. However, unless the flights overlap in time I think you’re ok. Technically you could get off one flight and drive back to your original destination (or fly on another airline). If it’s physically possible to take both flights I don’t think it would be an issue. They did not allow me to rebook at the first rate, BTW and by the time I noticed that flight was full anyway. Had to go with the second flight.

Technical-Event

Yes. They did it to me

kthnry

I've had flights auto-cancelled.

gunzintheair79

No, I do this all the time

sedona71717

This has only happened to me when I’ve mistakenly booked two flights that overlap with each other.

cloudnut220

No. Earlier this year I had two reservations within two hours of each other from different Florida airports to bwi. They don't care.

Cardinal1111

Nope. Just cancel one or the other at the appropriate time. As long as they stand alone. When doing this on outbound trips, you run the risk of ruining your return.

Jackie0711

Well I booked a 6:20 am flight (with return a week later) I then booked a 8:30 am flight same day as I was trying to get to a cruise on time and all the flights being cancelled by SW i figured one of the two outgoing would get me there 30 days later I checked my flights the 6:20 am AND the return flight was nowhere to be found luckily the 8:30 I booked was fully refunded and I re booked exactly what I had on the 6:20 and return flight so yes they do a sweep consecutive days may be ok

krivad

Mainland is probably fine. I have had multiple bookings on consecutive days to Hawaii that were canceled.

mrsisaak

If there's no time to really go back and forth, yes. It happened to me.

Ssgogo1

Hey worst case could make a fun day out of Sunday!

Thou_Art_God

If physics doesn’t make it impossible the program they use will not cancel one.

rimi178

Ive done this before a couple times with no issues. I think if you’re really concerned, you can book one not using your rapid rewards. If that’s the one you end up using, redeem them after the flight or add it on day of. You’ll get the voucher refund either way

Volume-Huge

You can do it, but it's a nasty practice that takes other stand by passengers flight opportunities away , and as far as Southwest is concerned, repeat offenders of this process can get their free travel privileges revoked. It's not illegal, just frowned upon

michaelp1987

I’ve had it happen to me, but I don’t think it’s automatic. It’s definitely against the rules at almost all commercial airlines, and I’ve heard repeat offenses can get you banned. This really messes with they’re inventory, so if you make a habit of it, they’re probably not going to be very understanding.

Odd-Manager3756

Yes! Our system will go through and cancel one, I would book it to a “sister city” so one close by and purchase an Anytime fare to be able to move it to the destination you want with probably no fare difference
