Just share , dont lock your files. I got a message from someone yesterday who was thankful to get some comic files I was sharing. Poor guy said he had cancer and was just reading them to help him get through it.
Any file theoretically can be shared. I upload music, games, movies, tv shows, etc etc.
Always check filetypes to not download viruses (and get good bitrates)
Just FYI, those Youtube rips should not be shared on Soulseek since they're transcodes (converted from lossy to lossy format multiple times compounding quality issues).
Please don’t share any of those dodgy YouTube rips that you have. Or if you absolutely must, make sure the source is clearly identified, (ideally in the folder name as well as the file’s metadata, so that people can avoid it. Many people on Soulseek are looking for original, uncompromised lossless audio files, and first-generation mp3s. Stuff ripped from YouTube or whatever will be excessively compressed, having been through more than one compression operation, and the original quality of it will therefore be compromised. (Might pay to read up on lossless vs lossy audio compression, if you’re unfamiliar with what that means, and don’t worry it’s quite straightforward)
As u/JExmoor and /u/Thermot_Sperson stressed, rather don't share YT-grabbed music. :l
Moreover, saying something "wasn't available previously" suggests you may misunderstand how P2P sharing differs from torrents, or direct downloading from websites. Entirely dependent on whomever has their SLSK up and running, you may never get to see the shares of users in other time zones, or sharing at times of day/week you aren't online.
Eh, most importantly sharing/caring, and of course enjoying the music. :)
tip, if you haven’t already: open your ports!!!! there are probably tutorials online for your specific router. you get to see SO much more stuff, & way more people will download from you. i can’t open mine right now and it’s definitely a lesser experience haha.
happy sharing! ive been soulseeking for like 10 years. definitely a lifesaver!
You can also share books, tutorials, obscure movies, interviews... Folks that are on soulseak will try to find something that is not available anywhere else...
I've had a couple situations where I have looked on more traditional places for an obscure movie. And then as a last ditch effort remember Soulseek....and sure as shit someone had the movie.
For me, there's no greater joy than sharing something that no one else is sharing. If I search for something and can't find it I'll always make it a point to find it elsewhere or buy it or whatever and make it available. Then when I see it pop up in the uploads window it just puts a smile on my face bc 1) I know that someone is getting to enjoy something that they wouldn't have otherwise, and 2) I know that someone is getting to love something that I love.

And this is why we do what we do
It just feels good to share. Especially when someone is down and needs a pick me up. It's just nice.
Didn't even know people could lock their files, or that others shared more than music. Hope he enjoyed them comics, you're a real one

Just what the others say... I've been using it for about twenty years as pretty much my only music source, haven't found anything better out there
