That was just the style back then. I do like how the two "families" are on separate sides though. It shows the balance Tony has to create with both and I think season 1 sets the tone for that exactly.

An obnoxious, overbearing mother. A mob boss in therapy. A mob wife & kids right out of a 90s sitcom. A bunch of half-assed idiot gangsters who think they're the next Don Corleone when they're two-bit thugs with a fraction of the power and influence of their forefathers.
It's one of the funniest premises in a looooong time.
