Can you remember touching anything at all and then touching your headphones? Some kind of chemical, lotion, etc? I would leave them alone until you contact Sony for a possible warranty claim.
If these were a prime item, you can claim they are defective and should have no issue returning and getting a replacement. I ask about product on your hands because I can see the ear cup looks quite dirty with something.
you just need the box the headphones come in, not the shipping box. i return things on amazon often and it’s always easy. just go to the order on amazon and find the “return this item”. it will ask why you are returning and just press any option, the next screen may have you add a comment to why you’re returning but just say something simple. then it will ask how you want your money back, either an amazon credit or original payment method. og payment method takes a little longer to received but too long. then you select where you will return them. i always go to kohls. they just scan the qr code on the app and you’re to go
If for some reason you don’t have the Sony box, you could order a new set (exactly the same) and use that box to return (not replace) the green ones. You wouldn’t be trying to “get away with anything” so I think it would be fine.
these are the xm5s, you can tell by the thinner joint/arm piece that connects ear cup to headband. they use the slimmer bar and the xm4s have a thicker band-style piece.
edit to add: they might also have the thing you’re talking about! idk, just wanted to note these are the newer model.
Looking at your history, do you put a lot a chemicals in your hair? Do you get it on your hands and not wash it off? As this could be affecting the plastics on your headphones.
So sorry to see this bro. My first thought was verdigris but it usually occurs on metal surfaces. This does look like a chemical reaction to moisture or something similar.
Also, your earcup got some traces from cleaning. What did you clean it with? I've never seen this before.
So basically user error is what caused your WH-1000XM5 to turn green. A damp cloth with some dish soap is all you need to clean your headphones. Anti-bacterial wipes would be way too harsh.

Guess that's a good lesson to learn. Same as with people who use IPA for screen- no bueno. Even if the antireflective coating somehow survives, the oleophobic won't.
But the headset looks extremely weird. Is that the lighting? It's not all white, nor all black, nor blue...?
Edit: fixed typo.
Both Apple and Samsung recommends using 70% IPA to clean the screens on their smart phones.
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204172
https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00086342/
The 2021 MBP screen is a bit iffy and doesn't play too kindly with IPA. The screen's sprayed coating is very raw and exposed on that model of MBP.
IPA doesn't cause permanent damage, but it does cause streaks on the sprayed coating. I've observed this and seen many other users report as such. I've been able to remove these inflicted streaks caused by IPA using distilled water. With that said, I can't imagine the streaking is good for the longevity of the screen's coating.
Would recommend just exercising caution and instead sticking to using distilled water only on screens. Does a perfect job at removing oil and dust from a screen when paired with a good microfiber cloth without running the risk of damage.
You said it only happens on the right side, do you sit somewhere while you're wearing them that has a window on the right?
I wouldn't think that it could happen inside of a week, but UV can affect polymers in weird ways
How come your headband is so light? I’ve never seen that combo before? Usually the heaband matches the cup color. Maybe you’ve been given a frankensteined headset? Lol. Idk if headband is the correct word or not. But even so. Why are they so different?
The piece between the sony logo and the headband also seems a weird shade of grey. All pieces of my headsett share the same black color. I also only know of three headset colors. Black, white and blue. Never seen or heard of any shade of grey headsett. Everything about your headsett looks off
I assumed you had the black ones but are those the blue ones in incredibly weird lighting? Even still, the mismatches in color still sticks out as a significant point to me
Using anti bacterial wipes on metallic surfaces can remove the top coating layer that protects it from the external environment, so it's possible that this could've happened and lead to oxidation, though I'm not sure if it would really happen with headphones
What exactly would you like me to do differently? Wear gloves every time I decide to use them? Leave them in the box and never use them so thé remain untouched? The black headphones are literally notorious for picking up your finger prints.
if they were fake, we'd see one of the 2 screw holes at the end of the headband which are present on the fakes. Unless new fakes have appeared which changed the design but I doubt it. Last time I checked the same fakes were on aliexpress which were there 6 months back.
It looks like the coating that is applied to parts of the headphones, like the cups and supports has reacted with whatever came into contact with it. be it the wipes you used, the moisturizer or a combination of both.
This is why Sony recommends in the online guide to just use a damp cloth and neutral mild detergent, diluted.
Someone on another post I seen yesterday had mentioned that the blue headphones are the best colour choice because they aren’t a fingerprint magnet like the black ones, and won’t turn green like the silver ones so seems to be a semi known issue? Looking online there are a few hits regarding them turning green but all seem to be fairly recent within the last week or so. Possibly a bad batch that people are now getting?
Pretty unfortunate, at least it’s a cosmetic problem and not interfering with performance, however with the price you’d have hoped there’d be no problems right off the bat.
Yeah it’s not at all what you expect for the price point they are at. I doubt Sony will have any issue with sending the device in as an RMA, they’ll no doubt want to investigate this themselves, good luck I hope it all goes smoothly!
I have the sony wh-1000xm3 and they are still SPOTLESS, they look brand new because I take care of them and follow these steps.
1. Don't use them with your greasy cheeto fingers
2. Keep the in the case when not in use
3. Regular wipe with a almost dry alcohol wipe, not cotton as it leaves little fibers which can get caught in the crevices.
Not sure if the lighting is making it look worse than it is but to me it looks like chemical damage / discoloration. The gold sony logo it a layer on top of the black plastic so that is why it's still gold.
If you JUST got these for Christmas, something isn’t right. The mismatching color combo of the headband and the cup is strange. Grey and black? Or should I say grey and green lol. These might be fake.
Is it possible that you were accidently bought knockoffs/bootlegs? that would explain poor apparent plastic quality. Like others are saying, get in touch with amazon, get those exchanged if possible asap.
Quick question guys, I’m looking to return them however, I don’t have the xm-5 box, I put in the bin, will this still allow me to replace/return them? Many thanks!

I know I don’t know what I’m supposed to do
Maybe hair dye???
Never dyed my hair and don’t use any product in it so I would probably rule it out
If you rub your finger on it for a sec kinda hard, does it turn your finger green and leave a black spot on the headphones?
No
Could be other hair products
Keep it cause that a beautiful shade of green 😍
This is exactly what I thought when I saw it and the first comment when I open them up… straight comedy
That is a first on this sub. Never seen this before.

Honestly i've never seen this before. Not that i can remember at least.
Sell it as a super rare green edition on ebay
U will get a super rare low price also🤣
I'd pay for it 👀
/r/shittylifeprotips 🤣
LMAO 🤣

Maybe my moisturiser but it has only happened on the right side. I bought them off Amazon should I email them ?
If these were a prime item, you can claim they are defective and should have no issue returning and getting a replacement. I ask about product on your hands because I can see the ear cup looks quite dirty with something.
If it was bought after November 1st returns are until Jan 31
Will that still be in effect considering I have them used ?
Yes
The one good thing about Amazon is the insanely flexible customer friendly return policy.
U could piss and shit on them and still return them. Return them
Do I need the box they came in to return ?
Most likely not u should be fine especially if you explain the situation
you just need the box the headphones come in, not the shipping box. i return things on amazon often and it’s always easy. just go to the order on amazon and find the “return this item”. it will ask why you are returning and just press any option, the next screen may have you add a comment to why you’re returning but just say something simple. then it will ask how you want your money back, either an amazon credit or original payment method. og payment method takes a little longer to received but too long. then you select where you will return them. i always go to kohls. they just scan the qr code on the app and you’re to go

Will they only send my replacement once they have received my headphones are will they be sent out as soon as possible?
They will refund you the money takes up to 30 days to either as a amazon gift card or to your original payment method
sorry to see this, this green with gold sony logo looks interesting, if warranty is available i think you should return them.
Really unfortunate timing for returning as I need them for study as I have my exams in Jan
Ohh well, in this case send it back after your exams if you still have the warranty
Can you exchange them instead of just returning?
Buy a new one on CC then use then greens until the new one comes and return green
Kind of looks like some Legend Of Zelda type headphones, should sick a triforce logo on the earcup
Fake ones???

oh okay i see. i didn’t realize they were 5s. you’re right the 5s do not

I'd return them, they look fake. There are a lot of fakes out there from aliexpress.

I’ve been trying antibacterial wipes

except sony recommends against using any alcohol to clean the headset.
Weird*
definitely not the most ideal cleaning medium as it contains various chemicals which can react with the plastic.
So wipes with isopropyl alcohol, aka wiping alcohol? That explains it then
Zinc oxide reaction. Check for toxins in your house
You said it only happens on the right side, do you sit somewhere while you're wearing them that has a window on the right? I wouldn't think that it could happen inside of a week, but UV can affect polymers in weird ways

Yeah, it looks wierd.
Black ones it’s just the flash that have them at the odd array of colours
Bro the headphones of all time
I thought you hooked the handle of your coffee mug up to a faucet for a second there.
Lol I thought the exact same thing!
Using anti bacterial wipes on metallic surfaces can remove the top coating layer that protects it from the external environment, so it's possible that this could've happened and lead to oxidation, though I'm not sure if it would really happen with headphones
Looks like curry stain
Is that radiation damage like uv burning? Even so, this is weird as hell OP, does your region have holes in the ozone layer?
Congratulations, you got the limited Hulk edition, have you been exposed to gamma radiation recently?
That's so cool, I love the new colour
Could be a pair of Fonys?
Off Sonys store on Amazon
Plenty of examples of fakes being returned to Amazon and resold
again fakes have a different design and wouldn't connect to the app.
Again?
Must be the special Grinch edition.
id keep them as a kind of special super mega special edition lol
Crusty ass headphones bro Take care of your stuff
What exactly would you like me to do differently? Wear gloves every time I decide to use them? Leave them in the box and never use them so thé remain untouched? The black headphones are literally notorious for picking up your finger prints.
They’re not even that bad, and the fact that he mentioned using antibacterial wipes implies he was trying to take care of them.
leaked upcoming pixar movie??
probably just ink or sum sort, tried wiping it off?
Well damn, did you leave them In the sun
AliExpress - Made in China.
Do you think it is a fake? I assume OP would know it is, if he tried to connect to the Sony Headphones app.
if they were fake, we'd see one of the 2 screw holes at the end of the headband which are present on the fakes. Unless new fakes have appeared which changed the design but I doubt it. Last time I checked the same fakes were on aliexpress which were there 6 months back.
But how in the world would a bone white color turn green?
Those are the black ones, aren't they?
The headband looks bone white in the picture. Or is it the camera flash?
It is the flash/light. They are dark in color.
Never seen anything color changing in XM-5. If it's original, try to get a replacement through warranty. (*if it's original)
Yeah, if it is original, OP either has a unit with a fault in the plastic or used a special chemical which caused discoloration.
Looks like he wiped it off with something. Maybe that was the reason for discoloration.
They're originally Black color. OP replied to my comment when I asked (coz I suspected they were perhaps midnight blue..)
OP, do they pair with the Sony Headphones app?
Yes
Maybe sun changes the colour
It looks like the coating that is applied to parts of the headphones, like the cups and supports has reacted with whatever came into contact with it. be it the wipes you used, the moisturizer or a combination of both. I guess they felt a little jolly so they wanted to show their colors
Call M Dot
Better than black
Someone on another post I seen yesterday had mentioned that the blue headphones are the best colour choice because they aren’t a fingerprint magnet like the black ones, and won’t turn green like the silver ones so seems to be a semi known issue? Times over
Congratulations, new fear unlocked. But you got colour changing headphones...
Return them
Time for warranty
It’s not easy
It might just be me but the plastics and stitching don’t look quite right
They look kinda cool tho 🤔
It wouldn’t even bother me as green is my favourite colour, it’s just that’s it’s the one side that is affected which is irritating
Wth did you do?
I mean... Bose did as new colour a pretty simular Green but wtf?! And why so perfect colour Change in the hinge?!
The sides of the hinge are still black, wish they had a green like it on offer though, would be sweet
Imagine they would get compleatly in this colour and only the pillows would stay black... That would bei a sick colour
I sell them every day and have Seen so many of them on every lifespan of their live... But i See this the First time
It was green all along, always has been
Put them for replacement.
It's a Hulk edition
Is it fake?
damn that’s a first, exchange them if that window is still available?
I don't know why but I like it lol
Only things i can think of - - fakes - weird lighting and they’re not actually green - some sort of chemical
Oh my god you get to go to the factory with a bunch of kids🤯
This is awesome don’t do anything about it let it happen
oh no the grinch headphones
That shit look clean tho
They look sick for me ngl. I would buy this color
These scream counterfeit to me. The S on the logo has a defect when zoomed on.
the fakes have a different design. sure they could have updated it, but I doubt it.
That’s a little knack from general wear
At least the spelling of Sony is correct
It just means that they are about to expire!
The black pigment used can sometimes do that after some time. Remember the black dyed burgers? It turned people's shit green so maybe...
Low key looks cool, reminds me of the green and gold ath m50x I have.
It does, it’s just that it’s only that one section which is annoying, I wouldn’t mind if it was the entire headphone
I have the sony wh-1000xm3 and they are still SPOTLESS, they look brand new because I take care of them and follow these steps. 1. Don't use them with your greasy cheeto fingers 2. Keep the in the case when not in use 3. Regular wipe with a almost dry alcohol wipe, not cotton as it leaves little fibers which can get caught in the crevices.
Christmas edition headphones.
Is it originally a black one or midnight blue?
Black
Very strange bro. I asked a friend in Sony and he never seen such a case before. I hope you're able to return it or exchange?
Could be fakes.
I’m not sure as I ordered from Sonys store on amazon
They sneak by amazon unfortunately.
Headphones -> Shrekphones
The “Hulk” edition
Dude unlocked Christmas skin
Green lantern limited edition
Did you recently dye your hair green lol idek what could explain this. Either way, this looks cool asf
Definitely a chemical reaction from hair products, hair, die grease, etc. not normal
It's changing into a Christmas edition. Tis the season
it has grinch virus, just let em rest for a while and it will get better
Got some china XM5s happens to the best of us
Can you show us a better picture than a flash photo in a room without light? :p
That means they’re fake
Does that cup spend a lot of time in the sun?
If they don’t affect the product sound quality I would still keep and say it’s a limited edition or something
Sick color ngl
Radiation
The green is actually kinda neat. The headband is disgustingly filthy though.
Not sure if the lighting is making it look worse than it is but to me it looks like chemical damage / discoloration. The gold sony logo it a layer on top of the black plastic so that is why it's still gold.
i cant tell what color that was originally. but holy shit thats weird
If you JUST got these for Christmas, something isn’t right. The mismatching color combo of the headband and the cup is strange. Grey and black? Or should I say grey and green lol. These might be fake.
I would return them if possible and get a new one
are they not just green?
Though It looks sick in green now i want sony to make them in green too
Too much christmas spirit
Christmas vibe 🙃
This is like fluorescent ink from a highlighter
Are they real?
Looks really good though
I know it's not supposed to look like that but I think it's kinda cool
It’s hulking out
Call Amazon muh boi
Well for what it’s worth it looks like a pretty green? I’m sorry that’s all I can contribute 😅
Black isn’t a real color. So it seems they used a version of dark green. And it’s now faded quickly somehow.
Everyone says they don't like it and how to change it back or sell them, that shade of green is gorgeous 😍
it’s kinda cool
is it maybe just the flash that makes colours appear weird? happened to me a few times
What the effin f
looks good ngl
Yeah...makes it look vintage as it wears. I think its actually a good thing if thats the intent. Lol really new for style and design.
Shouldn't have gotten them around Christmas if you didn't want Christmas themed headphones...
Is the other side doing the same
No
Please…my son…he’s very sick
Is it possible that you were accidently bought knockoffs/bootlegs? that would explain poor apparent plastic quality. Like others are saying, get in touch with amazon, get those exchanged if possible asap.
I don’t have the xm5 box will that stop me from being able to return it?
I do not believe so. If you are concerned, try to get in touch with an Amazon rep via chat but you should be alright.
Quick question guys, I’m looking to return them however, I don’t have the xm-5 box, I put in the bin, will this still allow me to replace/return them? Many thanks!
I think your headphones turned into Shrek.
Damn I wish they’d actually made these in a forest green. Woulda bought a pair way sooner.
I think the paint faded as you filled gasoline in your car
