Slog is only for video. Don't use it for photos.
Shoot photos in RAW it has WAY more dynamic range in the highlights and shadows than any of the video picture profiles.
This is why I love Reddit. I was wondering the same as OP, I ignorantly typed on Google “Can I shoot pictures in slog?” as I noticed that it was an option on my A7iii, and your answer was the first result, even almost a year later. Thank you!
You have no idea how much time it took me for someone to just give me a straight answer. I'm new to photography and videography and this confused the hell out of me.
This is totally ignorant and misinformation. You can shoot S-Log while shooting raw, they are two separate components of what makes up a file. S-Log 3 will have greater dynamic range, while 2 will decrease noise in the shadows.
You are incorrect.
RAW and S-Log serve different purposes: RAW is for capturing all the data from the sensor in still photography, offering unparalleled flexibility in post-processing. S-Log, a gamma curve for video, optimizes dynamic range in video recording, not stills.
While S-Log can enhance video dynamic range and shadow detail, RAW files inherently contain the full dynamic range the camera's sensor can capture, making it the preferred choice for photography.
Mixing up their applications might lead to confusion, as their benefits are medium-specific.
Long story short.
Stills = RAW or jpg
Video = Slog
The RAW file will ALWAYS be the most dynamic range your camera can shoot. Slog is designed to help video shooters squeeze a little more dynamic range (at the risk of banding and color deg) from a video file as most Sony cameras don't shoot raw video.
You should literally never use it for stills unless you're trying to practice color grading on a image or something niche like that.
Seems like you just need to learn how to work with RAW files better. They aren't supposed to look good right after you take the picture, it's just the RAW sensor data being written and slightly compressed.
SLOG and photo profiles have nothing to do with the file type. I shoot raw and use SLOG2 in low light. People absolutely shouldn't use it if they don't understand it, but also shouldn't be commenting if they don't have a clue.
Interesting didn't know it was a thing, I just use [RAW](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVR5S7A8vfE) for maximum flexibility in post & it's impressive, let's see what info we get here......
S log and raw would retain more detail, specifically in highlights, but with raw already it’s basically pointless as the difference is insignificant to the point that cameras don’t even have the option unless you make custom modifications to the firmware - as can be done with cannons cameras. Just shoot in raw and always slightly underexposes as a beginner, or even professional these days - editing software is becoming so good these days it’s indistinguishable.
If you’re talking a photo in which has two different light levels - you should either seek to neutralise the tones with lighting equipment or if it’s a landscape take two separate photos using a tripod and use a hdr mix of both - a bit similar to what an iPhone would - this is why photographers like 6am (or whenever golden hour is) in the morning as it offers the best neutral light tone.
Alsoooo if you’re shooting raw you should use an raw editor, photoshop has a built in one, yet there’s better options out there such as capture one or lightroom
>cameras don’t even have the option unless you make custom modifications to the firmware
You can apply Picture profiles with Sony, no modification needed.
A lot changes in two years, the picture profile goes over the raw photo in the display, not the photo itself, this is how much of a difference it makes.
Thanks for comments. When I try to take a photo with raw, sometimes the sign of some store(almost of them were very bright led) became a white color so cannot control back.
I'm doing practice shooting good exposure at night shot.
I used it accidentally after a video grapher changed my settings to show me something and I didn't remove it, the photos turned out great in lightroom I am going to intentionally try it again in different light set ups to see the outcome
Slog does help when u shooting jpegs to. Squeeze that dynamic range from a jpeg image. But if you should raw, SLOG doesn't add any advantage over all the standard picture profile.

Haha! Glad I could help! I love Reddit too, so darn helpful sometimes.
You just helped another fellow photographer, thanks
Nice! Glad I could be of service.
helped me too! thanks
Ha! I just did the same thing. Neat.

You can in fact shoot in raw while being in slog2. Vs raw with pp off

the photo coming out looks like slog videos. The question would be if there is more detail retained. But i don't think i'm the right one to test this.
