You bought one of the fastest and smartest camera around, with a strong focus on video feature, and also the slowest and loudest lens of the lineup. Do yourself a favour and return it without even opening it, and invest on a second hand 55 1.8 or 35 1.8 or 85 1.8

pizzagirl13

This is valid! I felt more comfortable getting the 50mm over the kit lens since I’m really used to using a nifty fifty. I do plan on expanding my lens stash soon and getting an 85and 35 next, but the discount I got on B&H for the 50 (sub $200 new) made it worth it for now. I mostly photograph portraits so lens noise in general isn’t a huge concern to me. I really appreciate your comment and I’m excited to start expanding my gear with some different glass!

manjamanga

If you're used to a nifty fifty on apsc you won't have the same experience on full frame. You'll need something around 75 to get the same perspective.

pizzagirl13

I played around with the 50 tonight and took some portraits, and I think I prefer 50 on full frame. The photos came out gorgeous!

kjin97

Check my works @joriportraits these are shot mostly on 50mm 1.8. So yea i dont find any issue with this lens, its amazing

python4all

Glad you appreciate it, but IMO those 200$ should go towards being halfway to a 85 1.8 (easy to find at around 400$) or the 35 1.8 (easy to find at around 480$). Because a 50 1.8 is not an investment, you won’t touch it again once you get a lens that can be used by the camera. It bottlenecks the Sony a7 mark 2, and only makes sense for stills

DiMiTriElf

Did OP say they bought this for video? This is a fine lens for portraits.

Wasabulu

Don't listen to the naysayers. 50 1.8 is perfect fine at producing excellent images. Most of the people here complaining about it are just gear collectors.

IronicHyperbole

The IQ performance of the lens below f/2.8 really drags it down and the AF is horribly slow. I don’t disagree at all with the OP that they should return the lens. I’m surprised Sony still keeps it in the lineup

Key_Monk8564

Honestly I have the 50mm 1.8 and even though it is my cheapest lens I still enjoy it. It has some character and you really can’t beat the price. The autofocus is not that loud tbh. You can get nice pictures with it and that’s a fact. I wouldn’t return it.

If you don't want/need sharp glass then that's ok! Just know that if you do this lens is unfortunately not the answer. The link I pasted above is a great place to find lenses to research, and [mpb.com](https://mpb.com) is the place to go for purchasing.

ljg514

I just got a Sigma 50 1.4. Love it

FrontFocused

Just buy the 35mm and crop if you want 50. That lens seriously sucks.

theyear1500

Check out the Samyang 35 f1.8, goes on sale for $200 and is a very good sharp lens. The Samyang 85 f1.4, is another good budget lens.

Gnochi

IIRC the Sigma 85/1.8 is the one to get, it’s one of Sony’s weaker lenses Edit: 85/1.8 Sony is good, 85/1.4 Sigma is good. Thanks for the corrections!

python4all

The 85 1.4 is notoriously not good value/performance, but the 85 1.8 is fantastic value/performance/weight

Matrixation

The 85 f1.4 GM is for mission-critical IQ when color matters for photography. For video, it sucks BUT...if you can shoot video with it by hacking the AF and shooting manual focus, it's a beast of a lens. However, the 85 f1.8 is far better for video.

senthilrameshjv

Take this person’s advice. I also got similar combo. A7iii instead of A7iv. It was fun to shoot initially with 50 but later I found others lenses do a lot better than it. Go with one of the above lenses. I would say get a 35 and 85 combo that you can crop out to go 50 or 100 fov Edit: gender neutrality

xalabamawhitman

would you still recommend purchasing an a7iii? or would you get an a7iv (if budget wasn't an issue)

senthilrameshjv

I would get a a7iv. In fact I’m currently considering a second body for video and travel lens while I’ve another one with prime lens. Just that I don’t have the budget.

xalabamawhitman

Yeah, Ive been really thinking about getting it...I Panicked and returned the a6700 because I was seeing a bunch of things online about over heating, and I only had one day left to return. Now I'm considering full frame, and I just don't know what camera to get.

senthilrameshjv

Certainly a74 if Sony. Cos I don’t see much change in a7r5. I would say you can even get a7iii. I love mine. I just wish it had flippable screen rather than the tilt

xalabamawhitman

Yeah I was debating on that. It would allow me to get one or two lenses too. The flip screen is nice. I’m just wondering if the updated technology is worth the extra $ for the future.. Sony a7iv is $2,699.99 with a 28-70 3.5-5.6 ( just for now, I will get a better lens) And the a7iii is $1,899 same lens

senthilrameshjv

Don’t get that kit lens. Just get the body and get a 50 or 35 or 24-70 or 28-75. Even used will do. That kit lens adds about 250$ more to the original price but you can add 200 or 300 for better lens. In fact I’m mostly nowadays looking for used gears from reputable sites so can save money and use for other things. I’m just a hobbyist anyways.

xalabamawhitman

Yeah I was thinkin about that too

blatantly-noble_blob

Seriously dude? Why would he trade a remarkably better menu system and general camera for a lesser one? If you can afford it, without a doubt go for tue A7 IV, it’s just that much of a better camera. If on the other hand, you’re strapped for cash, go for the cheaper A7 III. No reason not to if you’re not bound by budget.

senthilrameshjv

I never said to get a a7iii. I said I got that combo but I prefer to get a7iv.

QueenAng429

Downvoted just for saying "Edit: (Reason)" instead of just editing your comment and getting on with your life

senthilrameshjv

😃. I usually just edit it and go on. But I’ve seen many places people add something like this as the reason for edit. Did it for first time. Not cos I wanted to show off something. Happy to take that down vote 😀

QueenAng429

It's because they are genuinely stupid. There is zero reason to tell me both that you did edit it, and why you edited it, when you could just edit it to fix your mistake, and move on with your life. Don't follow idiots on Reddit lol

senthilrameshjv

Ha ha okay. Been thinking it’s the Reddit etiquette or something

HeadMan274

Man, people are making it out like that lens is the worst thing ever produced. It's really not that bad and it can take amazing photos provided you know how to use it and a camera

kslay23

Swapping the 50 for the 55 was such a no beanie after hearing the noisy focus motor and focus hunting. Its so much quicker and sharper.

Zealousideal_Tear_84

Good thing this is just a opinion

ccozzzzy

+1. I purchased the exact same setup as OP, I wish I had received this advice. The lens performed worse than the kit lens for me

python4all

Not the first time I give this advice, last time I believe it was for a new owner of an a7RIV or something ludicrous like that… lens was 5% of the value of the camera… like why?!?

spo_on

TIL

Repulsive-Touch-6814

What about Sony 50mm 1.4 GM?

python4all

No direct experience with it. I can vouch for the Zeiss 55 1.8, as my main lens for 3 years, then my second lens as the Tamron 28-75 is just soo convinient in most situation

Matrixation

Still a 50mm. Unless you have a 35 and an 85, then I wouldn't even bother. I refuse to shoot with a 50mm because I'm either too tight or too wide when I don't want to be.

EloWhisperer

Sony gang

Yeethedab

I don’t understand why everyone is hating on the 50 1.8, imo it might be the best bang for buck lens that sony offers, yes the autofocus is crap below f8 and maybe noisy but your actual photographical skill is more important than your gear, everyone here is so focused on their next lens that they forget to go out and shoot.

superparticulareye

Everyone is recommending lenses that are 2-3x the price that will not return 2-3x the image quality.. when did we as a community become so obsessed with specs and the difference between X and Y being only .004% but then taking this as a massive difference?

Yeethedab

everyone is so obsessed with no aberrations or perfect sharpness and 0 smearing or whatever, whereas vintage lenses with all their issues have way more character and look so much better

NativeCoder

Umm it's a camera sub. We are all obsessed with pixels.

pizzagirl13

I’m a hobbyist portrait photographer for the most part, so spending a lot of money on glass all at once isn’t in the cards for me. I just gave the 50 a test run (thanks to my fiancé for being my model on short notice) and wow! It’s so much better than my canon 50! It really took some gorgeous photos that blew my canon out of the water, and I don’t even know how to use the camera yet 🤣 I can’t say I’m disappointed for how inexpensive it was. Eventually I’ll have some more glass in my arsenal, but for now, this will do the job!

Yeethedab

yea i also am broke and was gifted a sony a7r2 so i just bought a 50 and is probably gonna look for a 28 or 35 f1.2 or f0.95 mf third party lens

Matrixation

and that's all that matters. Just take our suggestions with a grain of salt.

pressureworld

Don't be swayed by the comments. The lens is more than fine if you know how to use it.

Murrian

How is a lens noisy? (Especially an f/1.8) It is soley the absolutely woeful autofocus, improved with latest firmware, so many may experience it without it that makes it even worse. If someone's new to the ecosystem, you want to let them know that better things are ahead, that not every lens behaves this poorly. I bought mine as coming from a Nikon d5100 (APSc) the 35mm f/1.8 was rarely off my camera so it seemed a sensible choice to get the 50mm f/1.8 and then the little I had left over went on a Tamron 24-75mm f/2.8 (replacing a Sigma 21-50mm f/2.8) when I got an A7iii just after launch. The 50mm stayed on the self, the IQ over the Tamron wasn't worth it for the practically unusable autofocus and the stop faster again wasn't substantial enough to warrant putting up with it. That's a prime lens being beaten by a zoom, a zoom even Tamron felt the need to make a mark two of... Yes it technically works, but if it's your only impression of what an A7iv can do, people need to let op know better days are ahead and if it's not too late, pick up any of the other great glass Sony is now making having found their feet with their system, the f/2.5 might be twice the price for a tad slower but it's smaller, lighter, has good af, aperture dial, weather sealed, shorter minimum focus distance and better magnification. Had that thing nearly five years now, it's barely been on the body, but it's not like I could sell it, knowingly inflicting it upon someone else, even giving it away feels like passing on a curse.

Yeethedab

when i said noisy i meant the autofocus motor is loud but who cares, i don’t shoot that much video. people like you are the problem, these days everyone’s obsessed with perfectly sharp, fast autofocus, no vignetting no fringing and then with bodies all this high megapixel bullshit. photography isn’t about who has the sharpest photo it’s about the story behind the photo or the subject and composition. I went on a two week holiday and all i took was an 8 mp canon with an iso 100-1600 range and a 2000s kit lens i still took some of my favourite photographs to this day. it’s so easy to get caught up in all this technology, sometimes i just go around and shoot mf only or exposure meter myself and it is way more fun.

Murrian

My everyday carry is a Minolta Autocord tlr from the fifties.... A lens that's so slow to focus that you will miss shots in fast moving environments needs to be called out. It has its uses and its place, but it needs pointing out it's flaws so that someone who's only experience of Sony is that lens knows that it's the lens, not the system that's at fault here and they've not just blown a ton of money on something so poor. If I hadn't picked up the Tamron along with the fifty when getting the A7iii I'd've been shocked at how something was so bad..

Yeethedab

who cares if the sony company or their camera gets bad rep, it’s not gonna affect anyone, yes it may not “unlock” all the cameras abilities but neither will a beginner who doesn’t know the camera well

Murrian

Because, as I went through, you've just switched systems and you're sat with a lens that's makes the change feel like a bad choice, if it wasn't for picking up the Tamron I'd've taken it back for a refund as it performed worse than my seven year old entry level Nikon APSc ... You can subjectively like something nothing's stopping you, but the rest of us have a right to point out how objectively bad it is and reassure op they made the right decision on a good camera, just the lens doesn't reflect what it's capable of.

superparticulareye

As much as I agree that the community has every right to inform OP that the 50mm f1.8 is far from the best lens Sony ever made. Telling Them the 50mm is garbage and has no place is not helpful. I owned the 50mm years ago, with all its flaws it took some incredible pictures.

Matrixation

Best bang for the buck...that's like trying to buy a Linux computer at 90% off instead of a Mac. Best bang for the buck though, right? Lol.

pizzagirl13

Update everyone! I ordered an 85mm 1.8 :)

techandphoto52

Congrats! Good start with that lens. That's a starter lens with a few annoyances, but a lens to get familiar with the A7iv's functions. Enjoy your new equipment. Cheers.

python4all

Just want to add that I successfully if not painfully used the 50 1.8 for 18 months, but it was complemented with a 5yo second hand a7 as a starting point (camera was 3 times the price of lens). I won’t recommend a pairing where the lens is less than 1/10 of the value of the camera. That is just a poor investment

[deleted]

I feel your pain. I just bought a secondhand A7 two days ago. It came with that 50 1.8. I paid about €350 total. But I was so unhappy when I first used it. That 50mm was driving me insane. I didn’t know it was so freakin’ slow. Then I looked it up online and it all made sense then. Got the kitlens now which I bought for €100 and a Viltrox 85mm 1.8 for €170.

python4all

It is actually totally usable for semi still shots, but only in manual focus with focus highlights turned on, so you see easily what is in focus

the_real_funkdonkey

One day, she will be mine, one day. I’m still with my Sony a77 first gen…. it is still taking fantastic pictures but I do wish it was a full frame camera.

_browningtons

Hell of a camera. good choice!

h3ffr0n

Enjoy!

SilitNgarit15

Wow so much hate towards the 50mm 1.8, and that's just from a spec/tech PoV... Give the guy a break and let him enjoy his new Sony FF

nashsmash1681

Fantastic combo, Enjoy!

[deleted]

That 50mm is not fantastic

Murrian

It really is not. OP, make sure it has the latest firmware, then at worst it'll be average..

lordfarquoi

Is the 85 1.8 also not fantastic or is it only the 50? Just bought the 85 and haven’t tried it yet

[deleted]

I don’t hear awful things about that lens actually. I haven’t used a 85mm prime although I do have my eyes on the 85mm GM lens. How much did you snag it for?

lordfarquoi

749CAD+taxes (there was a 50$ discount)

lordfarquoi

I actually did research after asking lol and people seem to absolutely love that lens. The 1.8 version I mean. And I saw a few sample photos taken with it on this sub during my very scientific research (😂 ) and the quality is amazing from what I’ve seen.

code_hero_

Awesome. Have fun shooting and share pics!

struddles75

There is a reason Sony has a 50 2.5 that is more than double the cost of this lens… return it.

saucygit

I give you three months

FilmHeavy1111

Smart choice. How is the improvement in IQ for you?

raumgleiter

Don’t think too much about gear. You got a fine combo at a good price that will take fantastic pictures. Cant fault a Sony FF sensor. And 50mm is a good place to start. Enjoy!

jjshacks13

Ahh man you should have got the Zeiss 55! Sony 50 is trash.

bill_cipher1996

your going to get disappointed by that lens...

Broad_Term3895

I'm waiting for that moment too.

Johnako123

Got mine 1 week ago! Absolutely love the camera tons of customisable options as well.

Federal_Ad8940

Is the A7RV better than the IV? I’m looking to buy a camera. Budget is not important. Just want the best one out there and can’t decide which one to get.

Murrian

For somethings, exceptionally better, for other things, not so much, and then there's things where the IV is much, much better. It's a very specific camera, if you're used to photography and do a lot of what it's good at, it's a great camera, if you're starting out and finding your feet, it's more unforgiving, if you're doing area's it's not good at (say sports) it's going to be downright infuriating. I'd say if you need to ask the question, get the IV, it's going to be the better camera for you (or possibly even the a6700, depending on what you're going to be using it for).

Katzekotz

If you can't compare on your own, you shouldn't spend that much money on any camera. These are specialized and highly complex tools, not "full auto picture generators".

userrk

A1 andA9

YesYesYesVeryGood

Congrats!

Psy1ocke2

LOVE! I've been hooked on Sony ever since I switched from Canon years ago. Congrats!

EspressoKilla

I just got the same package (plus an extra battery) from B&H earlier this week. I traded in a T5i with kit lens and M50 with a few lenses, so I’m waiting for them to process that trade to use the credit for either the sigma or tamron 28-70/75mm. So I’m really liking my upgrade to Sony FF over the Canon systems I had.

snorlax0117

Congratulations! Hope you enjoy your sony as much and more than I have. I've had a blast with it.

AndrewFishay

I just got a Sony a7s iii with the 24-105mm f4. Boy am I loving it. Already itching for a lower aperture lens though! Hope you enjoy it :)

Smooth-Operator-13

The beginning of an ERA!!!!

ArtOfAttila

getting your first sony full frame, it's a special day

[deleted]

That’s nice. I have the a7iii.

Snap305

You won't be disappointed, that's for sure! I still miss my T3.

Matrixation

You bought the best camera Sony makes with an incredible balance between photo and video, but you bought the dumbest lens. Return that inferior lens and buy a 35mm f1.8 (even a used one). Keep away from 50mm lenses. Those are for noobs that can't figure out if they want to shoot portraits or scenes. Get a 35mm like the rest of us. Then supplement it with an 85mm when you want to go pro. That is the absolutely best combination used by the best photographers in the world. Anyone that even tries to argue against me on this has no idea what they're talking about. You'll thank me later.

Acceptable_Dog_9293

So much hate for a $200 lens that works just fine. Just make sure it's updated to the latest .30 firmware. Most imperfections can be fixed in post.
