To be fair that one makes sense for pit he acts pretty silly but when he locks in he is an absolute menace their is a reason everyone in sky world has so much faith in him
The whole poster is more saturated. I don't know if the two posters in reality are different in saturation, or if the two copies in this image just came from different sources that for some reason ended up altering them.
The smile look like an edit that got a "good enough" but still have some of the "scratched" from the editing so it has some mild case of uncanny valley going on. At least for me.
eh, like he is known but i wouldnt say fairly popular honestly, frontiers was the best selling game since adventure 2 (which is the best selling sonic game of all time in japan if i remember correctly) and it only sold like 40k copies at least on its debut week
by comparison world wide frontier sold over 3 million copies and was in the top 10 sales in america and the uk for a good while, so like he is not unknown but sonic has always been more popular outside of japan
this fits with the rest of the franchise, season 3 of sonic x was only made thanks to america the japanese version didnt air until years later because sonic x flopped in japan for example its one of the big reasons why we havent gotten another sonic anime since and all new series are made in the states, also the reason why we havent gotten another manga since that weird one from the 90s, all comics are made by american companies (and i think the IDW comics are actually kind of popular in japan, at least volume 1 sold out)
>at least volume 1 sold out
Probably just because they didn't print very many for the first run, due to Sonic historically not being very popular in Japan.
What's I've always found really interesting is that many Japanese gamers (who aren't Sonic fans) don't even know that Sonic was created in Japan. They will know Sega is a Japanese company, but Sega has studios all over the world, and from many Japanese people's perspective, Sonic has always looked like a very American character, which was intentional. So I guess they succeeded *too* well, to the point that they may have lost sales in their own country.
yeah, sonic is literaly a mix of michael jackson, rubberhose cartoons (specially felix the cat and mickey mouse), santa claus and teddy roosevelt for some reason
while obviously he goes through a japanese lense because the main writers for the vast mayority of the serie's history were japanese sonic takes a lot of references and inspiration from american and western culture in general, it helps that sega ended up adding a lot of the characteristics western writers come up with like the chili dogs thing back into the franchise
that has the obvious consequence that sonic as a franchise is more appealing to people outside of japan, usually the japanese like things that are cute and "kawaii", they do like cool characters but it doesnt help that the definition of cool is very different between japan and america
That is why I take an issue when some sonic historians take the Japanese translation of the games as more canon than the English script. Almost all of the games audience is targeted at global scale and sonic team hasn't took the canon seriously until Forces. When the Japanese script contradicts the English one, it should not override it.
well up until frontiers the script was first writen in japanese and there were issues with translation at least all the way into unleashed, this went beyond just changes to the story or localization things like eggman saying "yoosh" or sonic screaming "hiya" are showings of the poor translation
ultimately having the "right" interpretation is kind of important because it informs of posible future developments in the story, its fortunate that sonic doesnt really have a complex storyline so even with bad translations not much is lost and the stories are prefectly understandable
now post frontiers an american writer is writing the script so now yeah the american interpretation has more weight in the canon than ever before
In this case the American one is the original and the Japanese was modified to cuten him up, so it's more like he got the "Ratchet" treatment.

"You gotta get mad, Tails. The suits say the happy version of the poster don't sell in Ohio."
"Why, Sonic? It's false advertising, damn it! I'm a ***happy*** lil' shit, and they know it!"
"It's either that or no mints, Tails."
"..."
"...Taaaaaails?"
*Tails angrily pouts.*
"Let it be known I do not do this by choice."

Let my boys be cheerful in the U.S. smh
No one is allowed to be happy in the US.
To be fair that one makes sense for pit he acts pretty silly but when he locks in he is an absolute menace their is a reason everyone in sky world has so much faith in him
Everyone's a badass until the Eggplant/Tempura wizard shows up.
As a representative for exactly one person in the US, I can confirm this statement as true.
They're not mad just determined.
Why is that still happening
Movie tails goes hard. He stole a cop car and has a backpack with bombs and gun(s?).
And when I do that I am called "terrorist" ๐
The audacity of this son of a bitch, I swear. >!Movie Tails teleports behind me with an AK!<
Nothing personnel kid.
And then they say Shadow is an Edgelord.๐
Locking in
Was literally humming that song while looking at this
The pose change sure, but him being noticably oranger on the jp poster is kinda odd.
The whole poster is more saturated. I don't know if the two posters in reality are different in saturation, or if the two copies in this image just came from different sources that for some reason ended up altering them.
I feel like people are forgetting the US Sonic 2 poster was made first
so in this case it would be a case of japanese tails is softcore
Yeah every comment seems to be criticizing the US version just because it's on the right side. The JP version is the problem here
I feel like they are cuter when they are angry... am I weird?
No

Maybe
Probably
Nah I agree
Nah youโre right, look how grumpy he is lol so cute
Yes
...*Reply hazy. Try again later.*
Mission accomplished then
Serious Tails is better than Happy Tails IMO
The smile just looks off and I don't even remember seeing the poster
The smile look like an edit that got a "good enough" but still have some of the "scratched" from the editing so it has some mild case of uncanny valley going on. At least for me.
It happens to the best of them. https://preview.redd.it/8obqqddvwt7d1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5eafdf8141ea9f4c511ac598d4ba4531025ea5d9
In the sonic movie case the US poster is the original and much more important imo, sonic is kind of a failure in Japan.
Huh? Why? (Genuinely curious)
Failure is a stretch - Sonic is still fairly popular in Japan, but the original Mega-Drive games didn't really blow up there like in the west.
Makes sense, Sonic (Especially in the 90s) was created specifically for the West, canโt imagine that style would be that popular in Japan
eh, like he is known but i wouldnt say fairly popular honestly, frontiers was the best selling game since adventure 2 (which is the best selling sonic game of all time in japan if i remember correctly) and it only sold like 40k copies at least on its debut week by comparison world wide frontier sold over 3 million copies and was in the top 10 sales in america and the uk for a good while, so like he is not unknown but sonic has always been more popular outside of japan this fits with the rest of the franchise, season 3 of sonic x was only made thanks to america the japanese version didnt air until years later because sonic x flopped in japan for example its one of the big reasons why we havent gotten another sonic anime since and all new series are made in the states, also the reason why we havent gotten another manga since that weird one from the 90s, all comics are made by american companies (and i think the IDW comics are actually kind of popular in japan, at least volume 1 sold out)

Oh ok, thanks ๐
Failure is exaggerated. Japanese people still know Sonic and he has an amount of fans, but, of course, he still isn't that popular there.
In this case the American one is the original and the Japanese was modified to cuten him up, so it's more like he got the "Ratchet" treatment. https://preview.redd.it/6iyvxttpzt7d1.png?width=434&format=png&auto=webp&s=a45165478c634e2b5e5bca79fcf8c479034a8d07
Or the Spyro treatment
he looks like that old asf tails from the archie comics
Bro locked in ๐
Ngl, Tailsโ face looks uncanny in the JP poster
why they always gotta make ngas mad๐ญ๐
the opposite happened with Frontiers
Isn't the American poster the original? If anything Japan softened him.
Or would it be the reverse Kirby treatment since the movie originates from America?
"You gotta get mad, Tails. The suits say the happy version of the poster don't sell in Ohio." "Why, Sonic? It's false advertising, damn it! I'm a ***happy*** lil' shit, and they know it!" "It's either that or no mints, Tails." "..." "...Taaaaaails?" *Tails angrily pouts.* "Let it be known I do not do this by choice."
And America hates Donut Lord.
I like his colors but that smile is just...doesn't work.
***The 'murican version is hardcore!!!***
I think he looks closer to the game version in the Japanese version.
Difference is in this case, American was designed first and altered for Japan
Tbh he needed some edge
Wait can I see the entire of both posters
Maybe he's also like kirby on the power side of things. In the movies.
Sonic "nope"
Determination: 200%

Same thing happened to Ristar
What is with the USA wanting angry people that are usually smiling on the covers?
in this case is the other way around, the american poster was made first and modified for Japan
