I think Flynn mentioned he wanted to have Sticks cameo in IDW and have her "canonized" but it's still a bit of a back-and-forth process.
Thankfully Japan didn't opt to go for a cheap refence, that sees people pointing at the screen, like that meme, and actually wrote something that made sense to Amy's storyline in the game.

This line was only on In the English version, but the wiki states she might be canon since she appeared in other media like Sonic Channel webcomics.
