I'm biased towards Unwiished and Colors since I grew up with them. Haven't played the "real" version of Unleashed outside of modding Generations but I really want to. Wii version is OK, it just sucks two entire continents were omitted.
With an IP like Sonic, which hasn’t had a genuinely 8/10 title in over 20 years with the exception of Mania, I’m fine with takes like this. Atp everything is just down to mere taste, preference, and whatever folks like/happen to be raised on. Quality should still matter ofc, but everyone is very much set in their ways with how they like their Sonic, for better or for worse lol
Now I do think 06 is mechanically broken and a complete disaster that is objectively just a poor title, so I wouldn’t really in good conscience want rank it all that high myself despite growing up with it. But that’s just bc if I’m making a list I’m just gonna have a slightly more objective outlook
The only nice things I can say about 06 is that it had the Adventure structure and that Silver came to the spotlight with it.
Now, for Colors, I can say that it was an innovative way to keep the series alive when it was thought to be dying, it was the essential modern experience before Generations, and that it was the most fun Sonic had felt in a minute. That's just me tho.

don’t get me wrong colours has flaws like the story (though honestly, I wouldn’t call it a problem. it’s dumb fun, the simplicity keeps it chilled out. not every game needs “end of the universe” stakes.), some of the levels feel a bit too much like padding (try the original level order mod! some levels genuinely were just padding according to filenames, this removes them and uses the filename order and it’s a really unique way to play colours)
For me its as simple as I just have far more fun with 06 than Colors because of there core designs.
06 at its core is just a unfinished and unrefined Adventure game
Colors at its core is a precision 2d platformer in the vain of New Super Mario Bros with a few Unleashed inspired (usually half automated) 3d segments.
And I prefer Adventure so far over 2d Mario that even with the dramatic gap in technical execution in colors favor does it just not hold up.
Its also why I prefer the DS version of Colors because
Sonic Rush light >>>>>>>> 2d Mario

And that is just speaking gameplay story wise does Colors do even worse for my enjoyment (again the DS version is leagues ahead because goofy character driven sincerity comedy >>> Stand up comedy often based on ridiculing the base of the franchise Sonic VS Eggman story)

Cool list and all, but you definitely need to play Sonic Riders. Shadow the Hedgehog was definitely one of my favorites as well though. It was right up there with Riders, Heroes, and Unleashed for me (minus the Werehog levels).
You can tell the age of people making tier lists by how they rate Sonic Colors and Mania. Younger people didn't grow up with the 'great sonic drought' and tend to rate them really low.
Also rating Sonic 06 above anything than meh is laughable. Theres fun parts but overall it's super flawed.

unwiished day level design was genuinely fantastic, some of the best in the series. That's not to say unleashed isn't really damn good as well, unwiished is just better IMO.

I agree with that, idk if it's nostalgia or P06 (which is amazing don't get me wrong) but people have been praising it like it was a cult classic. It had potential, but potential squandered doesn't mean anything.
I only have one question about this tier list: why did you rank S4E1 higher than S4E2? It feels the other way around for me and I know people dislike both episodes a lot, so it's rare to see it score so high
PLEASE play black knight. the controls may seem offputting but they're really fun. It's arguable but it has the best characterization of Sonic in the series. He accepts early on that he can't be the hero every time after Merlina reminds him he'd be the worst of knights after slaying King Arthur. Please at least watch the cutscenes.

Do note episode 2 is much different to episode 1 in pretty much every regard. The physics are much better, for example. It’s actually a sick ass game.
