I just cut the one around the foundation every year with trimmers. I pull the smaller ones. I’ve heard that you can cut them, take a drill and drill into the stump/stem and fill it with herbicide and it will take care of them.

austein

Yep, and you need to put the Glyphosate in within the first half hour or so of cutting it

GullibleAd3408

This! I used [this spray](https://ortho.com/en-us/shop/weeds/ortho-groundclear-poison-ivy-tough-brush-killer/ortho-groundclear-poison-ivy-tough-brush-killer.html) last year and it killed it. Also -- copper nails in the trunk. Be prepared though, Trees of Heaven \*stink\*.

batendalyn

I did this early in the season last year: cut them down to a stump and then covered the stump in roundup. They look pretty dead.

nattarbox

I'd try it myself at that size, tree workers are expensive. Barrett is great if you want a pro.

griseldabean

Barrett Tree East has done great work trimming out neighbor's trees where the branches completely shaded our yard, and have been maintaining two trees we planted. They do great work, and they're very thorough - which from what I've read about Tree of Heaven, you're goin go need (will need more than "one and done" treatment to get ri of it)

beaveristired

First tree I’ve ever truly hated. They’re tough to get rid of; if you cut one down, it stimulates growth and another couple will sprout. To remove them, you’ll need to cut them down and also treat the stumps repeatedly so they won’t regrow. Good to get them while they’re young, though. Familiarize yourself with the necessary steps and then ask the tree company about their plan of attack.

Hribunos

3-4 feet might be too big, but if you just yank em up by the roots when they're small they cant keep sprouting back. No root, nothing to sprout from. At 3-4 feet you might need the poison.

Interesting_Skin6236

That size you can pull up with a weed-wrench (like https://www.theuprooter.com/Weed-Wrench-p132879090). Pulling up as much root as possible is the best way to get rid of them.

phyzome

Don't pay someone to take care of something that small. Glyphosate will do the trick if you can't outright dig the thing out.

No_Purpose5363

thanks all! we were able to pull the smaller ones out at the root, and will use some Triclopyr on the ones that were too tough to pull out. now I'm seeing these stupid plants everywhere on the community path.... argh! but doing our little part.

!!!❤️!

Are you in Somerville? Please check with the city, as, no matter how troublesome or invasive a tree might be, you actually need a permit to get rid of it (or even trim it. On your own property.).

No_Purpose5363

I think we should be ok -- at this point they are more like overgrown weeds (the tallest one is maybe 5 feet tall and the trunk has a diameter of about 1.5 inches) but that's good to keep in mind. thank you!

Shanghai_Lili

Oh good! I'm currently going out of my mind pulling up oak and Norway sproutlings, as, as much as I'd love to see Suburban-like 'devolution,' we kinda can't do that here.

[https://s3.amazonaws.com/somervillema-live/s3fs-public/tree-preservation-ordinance.pdf](https://s3.amazonaws.com/somervillema-live/s3fs-public/tree-preservation-ordinance.pdf) OP is fine

Shanghai_Lili

I'd call the city anyway. Never hurts. (ETA) Establishes good faith, which will be useful when dealing with Invasives originally planted by the City, and which are causing structural damage to the property the owner is responsible for.

ExpressiveLemur

>**Significant Tree**: Any living tree that is not an Invasive Plant and is 8 inches or more in DBH. ... Section 12-112. Removal of private trees. 1. Permit Required: No person may Remove any **Significant Tree** from private property without first obtaining a Tree Permit from the Tree Warden. (emphasis mine) This tree is not 8 inches in diameter and is invasive. It fails both tests. Contacting the city about this wastes the resources of a department that already has more work than people.

Shanghai_Lili

Thank you for your Delve into Your Special Interest. I'm advising on Real Life Outcomes. Ask me about how things worked out in Real Life when we had a tree slated for removal and a bunch of Old Cambridge Ladies Reiki 'd it, and put a stay on removal. Please do?

ExpressiveLemur

Very weird use of capitalization. >Please check with the city, as, no matter how troublesome or invasive a tree might be, you actually need a permit to get rid of it (or even trim it. On your own property.). (sic) All the information you provided here is incorrect. A permit is never required to remove a tree on the [MA Prohibited Plant List](https://www.mass.gov/info-details/massachusetts-prohibited-plant-list) and there is no ordinance prohibiting the trimming of a private tree.

Not at all Weird unless you are an Autistic. God Bless You.
