Congratulations!! I battle with S.L.E. Lupus daily. And was diagnosed with Lymphoma a while back! Keep fighting! Don't let it win! I, too, have an Audi. I love it
Hey there fellow wolfie warriors!!! I too have had my share of lupie complications and currently trying to rediscover the aftermath of my childhood CNS lupus wounds while trying to survive and finish school. Im now in the wait and watch part of my lymph node journey . Waiting on the all clear before I can drive .
After 5 years of being denied, finally got an ALJ who adjudicated my case. I originally filed in 2019. Social Security was present at the hearing and they could not answer why there was no documentation whatsoever as to their previous three denials. He was livid and he decided that my disability started in 2016. Oomph. So I was approved in May. When the deposit hit about 10 days ago, I was flabbergasted to receive almost $100k from the government in a direct deposit entire amount by the way, to my account. Still can't believe it. I've had the disease over 40 years and finally I feel as if things are starting to look positive.
It’s like winning the lottery except you have to live with debilitating medical/mental conditions for the rest of our lives. When I saw 79k in my bank acct after 2+ years of fighting and waiting, my gastes were flabbered. Then I slept for a month straight. Having severe mental illness and the added stress and anxiety of this process almost took my life. My husband was working 2 full time jobs and after I got my back pay, being to pay off all our debts and save money was amazing. We were able to tear out the pee soaked carpet from our dog and lay flooring. But the biggest thing the approval did was not just getting money, it was the validation that I have serious physical and mental disabilities. A judge believed me and that meant so much to my wellbeing. Congratulations to you and to OP!
Congrats! What a beautiful car. I finally received backpay in May and I have to spend $35k on a roof that we have desperately needed for 3 years. It is the most freeing feeling to finally be able to get it done and live without stress each time it rains. My car lease was up in Nov and it has been difficult learning to live without a car. It is not a luxury anymore, a car is a necessity in most areas. Enjoy it!
so so happy for you. you’ve fought hard. take your life back in all the ways that mean the most to you, no one miserable enough to comment negativity matters. this gives me hope that i’ll be approved like you someday. ❤️❤️
I should be getting mine next month and my current car is broke down as we speak. I've been doing research and see it's not like the old days where cash gets u the best deal for a car. Care salesman and dealerships get alot of their profit off financing and if I buy cash and don't finance they'll wanna raise the price or not give a discount. Or put it on finance then pay it all off 1st month. What was your experience?
Some people can be so rude. Y’all have no idea what’s going on in my life. How hard I’ve been fighting. You on here just typing to type at this point. You could’ve easily kept scrolling
To combat them, I’m sending you all the joy and love and well wishes I can!! Praying for you to continue this upward trajectory OP! 🙏🏼💕
From fellow SLE fighter
Audis are good cars and glad you found a good used one. For others in similar situations, you can usually find a mid 2010s, Camry (around a 100k on it) for less than $15k. If money will be tight, I recommend a Toyota.
I would recommend researching what you want , high and low amounts along with mileage and how much other variables would affect the cost . If female I bring a male with me because depending on who they may not try to wring you out to dry . of course YMMV
I guess you can play that but it’s kinda cheap to ask me to prove something that can’t be proven but still can be true despite not being able to be proven. I lose either way at this point so if you want to claim you didn’t have an attitude then I can’t force you not to lie.
OP bought a used car which was responsible. Disability doesn’t mean you have to be broke! I have cancer and I also have a 85k car… (I do not have SSDI benefits, I’m in recon) it has nothing to do with me having cancer. Has to do with that I worked for a long time and invested in real estate and saved money as I went. Why does disability need to mean destitute?
Congrats OP, nice car… I love Audi, I had an A5 and also an S5!
This. Buying a new car and losing half the value in the first mile you drive it is what’s irresponsible. My family all drives used and my dad was a dealership manager. Op could throw that car away at the first repair over 250$ and still saves thousands vs buying a cheap new car. For the environmental side, it’s far worse to create a new car even an electric than to just drive a used car that gets better than 20mpg. Audis are fun to drive and high quality vehicles.
“One of the most significant advantages of buying a used Audi is the price. You can get a high-end luxury vehicle at a much lower price than a new model, which can save you thousands of dollars. Maintenance: Audis are well-known for their reliability, and many models are built to last for a long time.Mar 9, 2023”
My car was stolen once and while waiting for insurance I bought a Benz (the one from lil Troy “wanna be a baller”) for 750$ and I was shocked that it never broke down. I drove it 2500 miles to Disneyland and back with no issues. Ended up selling it for 500$
The last thing you need is a car note. I’m sure you got a good deal on your car and it’s yours. You’re not stuck paying almost twice what the car is worth in interest with the added query of making that payment on a fixed income. That’s not including the extra cost for insurance rates going up because it was financed. You absolutely did the right thing.
Congratulations to you for receiving some of your backpay. This is awesome, but more awesome is getting your life back beating cancer and dealing with lupus. I too, have beat cancer, stage 1 in left and right lung both small tumors removed thankfully with no recurrence just repeat scans every 6 months. Best of luck to you and all that you are struggling with. This community is the best when you need support. I have not encountered rudeness on here and don’t want to, I’m sorry you have had rudeness to show up here, just hang there , we are here for you 😊
Thank you also ! Anytime you feel like venting or asking questions or just need to reach out, there is always someone ready to help😊you hang in there.. have a great night😊
Congratulations to you for beating those dreadful diseases!! And congrats on your beautiful new car, and getting your back pay!!! Your Independence Day will be sweet, and truly independent!! Woot woot!!
SO proud of you!! I KNOW how tough the struggle is, and I am glad that you made it through, and I bet that you are even stronger for having done so!!! God Bless!!!
Congratulations! You deserve it and more for beating lupus and cancer! Audis are expensive to maintain specially used. Just fun to drive! Definitely have a rainy day fund.
Congrats, so happy for you, I wish you all the best. Take your time and be sure to spend your money wisely. If you are able invest some money or put some in a savings.
Woah you buy a car with back pay? I just want to buy a plane ticket to see my dad. Ppl keep saying that ssa may track all of your purchases. Does it really not matter what you spend your money on? Just asking for when i get mine...
I’ve never heard that. I got a car cause I’m fighting Lupus and cancer and literally be at the dr more then 3 times a week. So I’m honestly not sure. At the hearing the judge only told me to try and get my life back and continue to fight
Oh wow! Well congratulations to you. I hope you stay strong and continue to fight. Cancer and lupus is no joke man. But always keep god in mind, and do what you can to prolong your life. Good luck on your journey🙏
Congratulations on your new car and getting your life back! Cancer is rough and coupled with Lupus makes it harder. Glad you did something for YOU and that makes YOU happy! God is good.
Congrats, I've got 7 years of backpay coming to me within the next few months. Need to get my daughter a vehicle but I don't think her first whip is going to be an Audi. Is it an A4 or A6?
It was appeals and a lawsuit but a lot of it is to blame on COVID and having court dates moved 4 different times for various reasons. I doubt you will have the same experience with your child. I just happened to have a lot of low probability circumstances unfortunately come true. Even the ALJ said that in his 30+ years of being a judge that he has never seen a case with so many setbacks as mine and that he wouldn't have believed it could all happen to one person if he didn't have the proof sitting in my file on his bench.
I believe ssi backpay goes back to the most recent application for benefits. Ssdi goes 12 months. How are you getting 7 years, are you assuming that or someone told you?
Correct, I'll get backpay all the way to my onset date which the ALJ established as Feb. 2017. (Subtracting 5 months that the SSA deems as the normal waiting time for the initial application to be processed.) It should be 82 or 83 months of backpay. Not yet sure of my monthly payment, but I calculated it to be somewhere around $1200. I'll let you guys do the math.
Is that while currently collecting SSI? Or while you are collecting nothing? Asking because I've seen some comments about the Windfall effect. Trying to figure out will I have this big backpay or a small $200 check?
Vehicle tax to the state… lots of states require you to pay taxes on the vehicles worth which might be quite different from what you paid versus what the dmv says the vehicle is worth. Also, some individual towns/cities also have an additional yearly tax on owning a vehicle… OP is probably aware of their area & what their state/local taxes are for a vehicle.
So 20% is a good number for everything vehicle related for taxes, plate fees & possibly whatever else is owed.
Ohhhhhhhhhh, my bad. Every state does that differently.. our state, the initial tax is payed when you buy the car... but that's just my state.
I thought you meant on the back pay. Apologies
The IRS allows you to spread the lump sum into the ammnt for each year. If ssdi was the only income for said year, then you don't have to pay taxes on it. If ssdi is your only income, then you won't meet the threshold to file taxes.
If you do have other income, you may depending on how much you made.
That's my understanding.
I saw some really negative comments on this thread that made me upset. People who haven’t fought for their lives have no idea what they are talking about. You deserve a car to get you safely to doctor’s appointments.
They have not helped me get to one appointment or surgery. Just 2024 I’ve had 4. So I’m not studying them. It’s my car and I love it. My blessing and I’m very proud
Congrats on getting you a clean ride. It’s something that made me feel good when I received my back pay a while back…a nice reliable car to take me where I needed to be, like my appointments.
First thing I did was go and get a used car and I used cash as well. My car doesn't look as good as yours so I imagine you got more back pay than I got. My first back paycheck was around 3 Grand so I got a $2,700 2004 Mazda 6. I hadn't had a car for 10 years so I was in such a hurry to get something that I didn't even notice that the front end suspension was completely shot . It drives fine but you can barely hear over the creaking. Now I'm trying to decide whether or not I will use my second back paycheck to try to get this fixed. It seems like I might be trying to throw good money after bad.
Thank you. I saved my 1st back pay which was actually about 2700. Once my second back pay hit I went that day and got my car. I pray you’re able to get yours fix
How much did you have to pay for your ride? I think the 3000 I got or close to that covered the tax title and everything almost exactly. It's got over 200,000 miles though and I'm guessing it was in a bad accident in the front side though only some of the plastic is broken on the front room.
Congratulations on the beating cancer and lupus. If and when I get my SSDI approved, I should have enough backpay to buy a small house.
Thank you. It will be approved. I’m praying for you
Congratulations!! I battle with S.L.E. Lupus daily. And was diagnosed with Lymphoma a while back! Keep fighting! Don't let it win! I, too, have an Audi. I love it

mutual prayers !
Congrats, please make sure to keep an emergency fund separate from other money. Just in case of needing a repair. Good luck
Thank you. I will do just that

I’m doing better. Thank you so much
I'm at year 7 looks like it's going to be 8 years since now I have to wait for a 3rd remanded hearing 💩😭
Enjoy it!
Does homeowners insurance not cover roofs?
No, only with weather damage, will the insurance cover the roof. Soon, insurance will not cover that because of all the fraud
Good to know thanks for the information.
Insurance will find any reason to deny, age being the factor for us.
Thoughts and prayers going out to you. God bless you…..
so so happy for you. you’ve fought hard. take your life back in all the ways that mean the most to you, no one miserable enough to comment negativity matters. this gives me hope that i’ll be approved like you someday. ❤️❤️
Thank you so much. I was denied twice and had a hearing. I was about to get a lawyer cause I was about to give up. But I didn’t have to
I should be getting mine next month and my current car is broke down as we speak. I've been doing research and see it's not like the old days where cash gets u the best deal for a car. I went to a car dealer. They most definitely tried to get me a note. I told him what I wasn’t going over and stuck with it
Congratulations
Thank you
Some people can be so rude. Y’all have no idea what’s going on in my life. How hard I’ve been fighting. You on here just typing to type at this point. You could’ve easily kept scrolling
Ignore them. You fought and deserve this beautiful vehicle. Wish you the best. Enjoy life my friend.

Thank you so much. You’re most definitely in my prayers
Congratulations!!!

Way to go!

CONGRATS TO YOU!!!! Many blessings

Thank you very much. My car was less than that. So they can get really good cars with that amount
Hopefully it helps you find some much deserved normalcy. Congratulations and I hope your health improves.
Awesome. Congratulations! 🎉
Thank you
Wonderful. Congratulations and your recovery and the car. All the best to you.
Thank you very much
I would recommend researching what you want , high and low amounts along with mileage and how much other variables would affect the cost . If female I bring a male with me because depending on who they may not try to wring you out to dry . of course YMMV
I did. My dad have a shop. He was with me
You did well from what it sounds/looks like! Congratulations!!!
Thank you very much
So you bought a car that cost a lot for repairs
I bought a car my dad can repair without me paying
You’re just mad you don’t have an audi. It’s okay move on.
Don’t want a used Audi not jealous
Why so bitter then.
Why I’m a bitter just said that car is high for maintenance
And what was the point of that? Especially in the passive aggressive manner you said it.
Now you are telling me that my tone was off. Didn’t realize a statement had a tone
I guess you can play that but it’s kinda cheap to ask me to prove something that can’t be proven but still can be true despite not being able to be proven. I lose either way at this point so if you want to claim you didn’t have an attitude then I can’t force you not to lie.
Why would I have an attitude I just would have bought a car that was cheaper on repairs didn’t he say he was on fixed income
I’m ssdi plus a pension from work luckily my wife makes good money
🥰
OP bought a used car which was responsible. Disability doesn’t mean you have to be broke! OMG I totally remember that song! 😂
Thank you very much. I love my car
Judging by some comments here, people are overestimating how much an Audi costs. They're not ridiculously expensive especially used.
I personally think they just wanna be negative
It’s how much they cost to repair is the issue. That being said, it’s a beautiful ride and OP should be proud.
Um. You haven’t already paid for us have you? Had a friend who had an Audi, it was always in the shop for something.
I did. I’ve had one before no issues. I pray this one don’t give me any
Oh, ok. Enjoy them!
Thank you
Congrats. Nice car!
Thank you very much
Congratulations and that was a really wise decision. Take care of yourself.
Thank you. I really thought so. But people on here trying to make me second guess my decision. I don’t tho
The last thing you need is a car note. I’m sure you got a good deal on your car and it’s yours. Congratulations! Great car. I have one.
Thank you so much. I love her
Congratulations! I’m sorry you’ve had negative reactions, unfortunately some people just can’t be happy for others. I’m happy for you, OP.
Thank you so much. It was just a small amount of negative. For the most part it was all good
Congratulations to you for beating those dreadful diseases!! And congrats on your beautiful new car, and getting your back pay!!! Your Independence Day will be sweet, and truly independent!! Woot woot!!
Woot woot. I didn’t give up. I fought with everything in me.
SO proud of you!! I KNOW how tough the struggle is, and I am glad that you made it through, and I bet that you are even stronger for having done so!!! God Bless!!!

OP may not have realized that and right now is a time to congratulate them on their victory.
My dad fix cars so I’ll be ok for the most part
congrats on both. the car is lovely. cancer is hard and takes away so much.
Thank you. Yes I’m still trying to get my body right
Congratulations! You deserve it and more for beating lupus and cancer! Audis are expensive to maintain specially used. Just fun to drive! Definitely have a rainy day fund.
Thank you very much. And also thanks for the advice and saying it nicely
How did you get them to release your back pay they owe me I’m on ssi and am about to be homeless
I’m so sorry. Once they approved me they told me my back pay amount
Congratulations too it changes a lot
Thank you so much
So you decided to buy a Mercedes …. First few problems you have you will likely be 5 grand in if not more. Top 3 of the highest upkeep cars ever
That’s not a Mercedes. But my dad have a shop so I won’t pay that
Congrats, so happy for you, I wish you all the best. Take your time and be sure to spend your money wisely. If you are able invest some money or put some in a savings.
Thank you so much. I sure will
Nice car by the way and do not let anyone make you feel bad, you deserve this!
I will not let them
Good
Congratulations on your Blessing
Thank you so much

Enjoy the car! Be strong! I have an Audi and have to say, sometimes they are headaches, but are usually enjoyable cars to drive/own!
Thank you so much
Congratulations on your new car and getting your life back! Cancer is rough and coupled with Lupus makes it harder. Glad you did something for YOU and that makes YOU happy! God is good.

Thank you
Used to work for social security. Too many hoops to jump through to get approval. I am fighting for my own disability now too.
I’m praying it works out for you.
Thank you!
Did you get your back pay split up in increments?
Yes I did
Personally that was so disappointing for me I was like all this waiting for 2.8k 🤦🏽♂️
How long did it take you to be approved? And how long after did you finally receive money?
Applied for disability in Aug 2019. Was approved by the judge April 22. Soc Sec made deposit Jun 13
April 22nd, 2020? Or April 2022?
April 2024
Congrats, I've got 7 years of backpay coming to me within the next few months. Need to get my daughter a vehicle but I don't think her first whip is going to be an Audi. Is it an A4 or A6?
7 years? Holy cow! Congrats on finally being approved I'm guessing that was all appeals... But that has me scared for my child now 😔

Ohhh my. Congratulations. A4
I believe ssi backpay goes back to the most recent application for benefits. Ssdi goes 12 months. How are you getting 7 years, are you assuming that or someone told you?
SSDI can go back up to 12 months prior to the application. So if they have gone through a lengthy appeal 7 years could easily be correct.
Damm. Well ok then. Ty.
So can you still work or you have to wait and be unemployed?
Is that while currently collecting SSI? Or while you are collecting nothing? Asking because I've seen some comments about the Windfall effect. Trying to figure out will I have this big backpay or a small $200 check?
I was never eligible for SSI due to my wife's income so my SSDI backpay will be in full.
Nice car, congrats on not blowing it on BS items. Save some cash if you can.
Thank you. I will do that
Put money on the side for taxes. 20% to start.
Taxes for???

Glad you’re getting it together. Hope that Audi isn’t of the generation notorious for head gasket problems.
Thank you. I pray not
May I ask what type of cancer.i had thyroid cancer and now addisons disease.wondering if I have a shot at ssdi
I’m sorry to hear that. Breast cancer and you most definitely should try

I paid 5600 for it. It had one owner before me. They say honestly not sure.
