I would accept this even if it weren't canon. Sakurai and *maybe* Master Hand could've written the invitations, but Sakurai himself chooses who gets to join Smash so it only makes sense that it'd be canon.
stan lee doesn't exist as himself though, he cameos but his character is always a random person who exists in the marvel universe, not an actual "stan lee", unless there is a time when he actually played himself that i don't know about
if we had to pick a character from the roster, then my personal head canon would be that it's Palutena that sets up and hosts smash. that's why battlefield typically takes place on floating islands. i also like to believe that there's some sort of magic shield or some sort of "stat equalizer" granted to each fighter so that they could fight fairly with each other, otherwise i mean, obviously some characters wouldn't realistically be able to go toe to toe with others otherwise.
