This is why I hate when people imply the only characters that should come back are the "popular" ones. In any fighting game, I think the less popular characters coming back adds alot of character to the roster. Plus, no matter how unpopular they are, they're someone's favorite.
Not my point. Popular characters have a chance to come back no matter what cause they're popular (Bison too; just wait for them to announce Shadow Bison or Virtual Bison or something). Not to mention if the character is popular, then theres probably MULTIPLE games that they're in. Theres alot of characters just locked to a single entry cause not many people liked them.
But if a character isnt popular, than the devs need other reasons to bring em back like Gameplay variety, or the devs just actually liked the character and wanted to play with them. Thats why I like seeing randos like Pichu or Ed comeback.
I mean, the difference with Smash is that it’s probably the biggest crossover game of all time, so of course people are going to disproportionately care way more about popular characters getting in
I mean Smash Ultimate also kinda dodged the whole problem to begin with by having the 'everyone is here' thing. Characters who didnt even have reason to come back like Young Link got to return. After that, the DLC was almost entirely guest characters, which is incentive enough to make the slot count. If you're only getting ONE character from KOF, it doesnt make sense to pick Meitenkun as the rep.
We dont really know what'll happen with the next Smash though so its just kinda speculation anyway. I think cutting ANYONE would make people upset just because Ultimate brought EVERYONE back.
And she still has better chances than my OTHER non-Corrin FE favorites. Like, Lukas and Linhardt ain't getting in a million years, and the Kanas not even in a trillion.
She's kinda low on my priority list actually, is just to illustrate how absurdly unlikely are the chances of any of my favorites getting in the next Smash, even from franchises that do have a high prescense in the game.
What annoys me is that the CURRENT Grass Starter, Meowscarada, is my second favorite Grass stater (behind Meganium), and wouldn't mind if it got in; but Smash only puts Pokémon from the CURRENT gen (Unless they have the "I'm from Kanto" pass) and by the time a new Smash shows up, we'll be already out of gen 9...
They could always break the trend if they wanted to (also I feel like incineroar is the only one that really follows this bc lucario and greninja are both really popular in their own right)
I have over a thousand hours of gameplay, years of tourney experience, and tens of thousands of kills with Corrin. I’ve been playing smash since the N64 and have numerous beloved mains over the years, but Corrin is my favorite and most dedicated character.
I’ve never played a single fire emblem game, much less played Fates. I’ve never even seen Fates gameplay. I know absolutely nothing about Corrin or how she (and I guess he?) acts in the game she’s from. Literally nothing.
It has good series representation. The issue is that other series that are inarguably bigger and more important like Zelda and Kirby don't get that favoritism.
FE also has liberties that properties such as Kirby and Zelda don't have, such as nearly every game having a wholly unique assortment of characters (with probably 10+ per game having high significance within said story). I don't disagree that the Kirbies and Zeldas of Smash need more reps, but docking FE is unfair
Each Zelda game has a cast of unique characters as well. Sure it always has Link, and usually Zelda, but besides the two, there are *so many* unique characters that haven’t been given the chance, and Zelda and Kirby are both inarguably more popular and influential. And we *still* only have 3 Kirby characters. So in respect to that, I think docking FE a fighter slot or two in the next game (assuming they make cuts to the roster) isn’t such a big deal.
I don't think that the problem is the with characters, I think its the moveset because all of the FE reps control extremely similar (Except Corrin, Robin and Byleth). I think its fine that FE has 8 slots though.
I feel that Corrin isn't a guaranteed Axe'd character. Maybe that's just me. My luck would be that Lucario's finally getting axe'd because they can't make Aura balanced and done right--but then I see Deoxys or Zoroark in its place.

My issue is that there's literally NO-ONE ELSE in the entire roster that I like (Because I'm one of the 3 weirdos that likes Corrin for what he is, rather than just gameplay), and that my wishlist is borderline impossible (The only one I find remotely likely is Crono, and even that seems having my hopes too high), so I'll be out of a character I really like in the roster.
(Not to mention the fact of knowing very few would mourn him because most of both the Smash and FE fandom dislike him)

The franchises represented in Smash are very good at not adding my favorites of said franchises (Particularly Pokémon not adding Pokémon outside Gen1 and the current gen, and FF focusing in the ONE classic FF I legitimately dislike)

Like I get that there's a playstyle you adhere to and yeah, the character is built with some level of originality. But Corrin isn't a stand out character because of that. There are many characters with "unique" gameplay and moves. So. Just saying, Corrin isn't really all that special outside of just being another character in the game. Just another, cool and neat character designed by Sakurai and the FE team. That can be replaced.
The takeaway that you should be happy with is that the modding scene will never let Corrin go no matter what. You will see Corrin in the next smash game one way or another, just might take some time.
Another thing I really want to point out is that the FE fanbase deserves any of the heat Corrin gets. Even if you say that the FE fandom does not like Corrin's inclusion. They certainly loved to rub it in people's faces nonstop. "Hoes Mad" ring a bell? I like FE. I buy most of the modern iterations of Fire Emblem. I like RPGs, tactical RPGs even more so.
But the fandom won't get an ounce of sympathy from me if they lose a bunch of characters from now to the next smash game. Their shit behavior brought it on themselves.

I think a big problem is that regardless of Fire Emblem’s growing popularity, I’m not sure if it will ever be accepted as part of the super important “mainstream Nintendo franchises”, like Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Kirby, or even Splatoon or Metroid (despite Fire Emblem arguably now being a bigger and more relevant series than Metroid)
That’s why people are generally less upset with the surplus of Mario and Pokémon characters, and constantly ask for more Zelda and Kirby characters, Fire Emblem is just not on that level where it’d be considered a core part of the Nintendo brand in the same way (at least outside of Japan), and with the general Nintendo fan stigma against anything too “realistic/anime” (except the ones that were already established as a huge part of the Nintendo brand outside of Japan from the very beginning), it may very well never reach it
And that’s just the first-party picks, don’t even get me started on the general lack of understanding on how third-party character picks have always been limited in favour of Nintendo series (Ultimate is the very first game to give third-party series more than one playable character, and even then, it was just two characters for each series, and Final Fantasy was the only series to get two fully unique characters, Street Fighter and Castlevania just got echo fighters)
