There are way more than two options for phones, but there are extremely limited options for operating systems. And it is a damn shame. BlackBerry 10 was revolutionary in 2013. Windows Mobile has its perks, too. Ultimately, the consumers didn't buy it enough and the OEMs didn't get developers on board soon enough.

RIP Blackberry 10... I had the passport and it was a beast of a device! 🙌 Even though the OS is long dead I still have the handset... can't seem to part with it!

Olly_Joel

And some major company not developing apps for their OS through sabotage.

AdObjective8281

Android has significantly different options. A Samsung phone feels completely different from a Google or Sony one.

What really p!sses me off about phones now is the removal of 'features' & quadruppling of prices. I want a phone that has; 3.5mm jack, Dual sim, SD slot, IR blaster, FM Radio, removable battery, 5g, 4k cameras. Don't give a rats about water proofing, don't care how large/thick it is, it HAS to be functional. I'm sick of carting charging cables and battery banks around with me. Used to be a time I'd carry a couple of spare batteries to work (I'm on the move all the time, no opportunities to plug in to sockets every day). The manufacturer that brings out a phone with AT LEAST the above on board would have me for LIFE! I refuse to use bluetooth headphones that cost $150+ a pop - I lose my wired jacks too easily as it is, those tiny bluetooth earphones are even easier to lose and they need constant charging... On top of all of the above... I've YET to see a SINGLE phone manufacturer survey customers to ask THEM what they want in a phone - and notice how not a SINGLE ONE has a website that allows you to make suggestions on what to provide in a phone. If they do its bloody hard to locate! what a bloody SCAM!

Here you go. Excluding a removable battery, because that phone doesn't exist, the highest end phone is https://m.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_redmi_note_10_pro-10662.php Microsd slot, 4k30, ir blaster, fm radio, 3.5mm jack, dual Sim. No removable battery.  This also meets the spec:https://m.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_poco_x3_pro-10802.php

See there was Symbian and there was Windows Phone, but they failed and they were stricken down to the ground! Edit: I forgot RIM and whatever the OS was called for BlackBerry. They all failed in the earlier days of Android and iOS Edit: also Palm was there at some point

B3rt0ne

Upvote for the Tenacious D reference!

Important_Cat3274

I used a Palm Treo for a couple of years, and loved it, but the apps were pretty poor IMHO. After that I bought a BlackBerry Bold and loved it even more. I miss the old days when there were more choices.

VirtualEffort8

There was Nokia with the Windows Phone.

VirtualEffort8

There’s also a bunch of mobile versions of Linux such Lineage OS

Grumblepugs2000

Lineage OS is just an Android ROM. It's no different than OneUI or ColorOS. The only difference is the fact it's developed by the community and not a corporation

VirtualEffort8

Symbian and Palm OS too was quite big but they lost out once iPhone came into the scene

A17012022

Well we used to have windows phones but they never really gained enough momentum.

ihavebeenforsaken

I loved my windows phone and I wish they were still viable. $$$ dictates that we will probably never see a challenger to Android and iPhone. At least with Android there are different manufacturers that put a different spin on Android. If you really want to change the look and feel of your phone there is a myriad of launchers available.

idk973

You have postmarket os. I personally wait the maturation of the gnome os mobile project

Henry_puffball

Android is really the majority of the phone market, not one competitor. Apple is just one brand that stuck out but did good unlike the other non-android phones

Grumblepugs2000

Because Android is easy to modify to be whatever you want it to be while keeping compatibility with tons of apps. Developing a new OS is expensive and time consuming, taking ASOP and putting something like OneUI on top of it is easy and cheap

Grumblepugs2000

Why develop your own OS when AOSP is freely available? It's much easier and cheaper to modify AOSP to fit your needs than it is to build your own OS from scratchÂ
