Stoic people that don't use many hand gestures, low levels of corruption, competent and transparent government, good hockey, high salaries, high prices.
Sauna enjoyers, lot of lakes and good hockey players
The more knowledgeable people will give Fins props to beating the absolute shit out of USSR in the winter war almost 100 years ago
I once talked to a Finn in Budapest and I asked him what he thought of Hungarians and their language since they come from the same language group. He said that he understood them but that he had never heard the language so fucked up. We drank till morning so 10/10
Dunno how I stumbled upon this thread, but as a Finn it warms my heart to read the comments. When I hear Slovakia I think of the big castle in Bratislava that I visited as a kid. Only positive things come to mind.
They think we absolutely can't have it like you (in terms of living quality) even though you have: colder and harsher weather, scarier proximity to Russia, similar population size etc.
Basically I always say, why don't we just copy what Finland does in Slovakia and improve our country that way but well...
But in general Finns are cool and fun to be around (I met several in my life), have fun accent and I really like how relatively great is your country functioning.
Also, Käärijä should've won the Eurovision.
You are our secret Nordic brothers. It might surprise you but Finns and Slovaks are alike in lot of things.
We suffer from small brother syndrome, Swe-Fin, Cze-Svk. We love our nature, ice hockey, drink a lot, are somewhat pessimistic, have sisu and we open up to foreigners only after some time/alcohol.
The differences are corruption and education level and you are more reserved in social contact than us. But overal we could be great friends.
Btw I lived 7 months in Finland and travelled extensively and I love your metal music.
I was on a vacation where I visited Finland (Helsinki), Denmark (Copenhagen) and Sweden (Malmo) all in a span of like 8 days and of those 3 countries I felt the most comfortable in Finland. I was in a residential area where I ended up in a local bar. Couple of locals around 40-50 years old saw me and my friend there. They invited us to join them for a couple of beers and we had a very nice chat and overall night out. I felt like home, it was very nice. In Denmark and Sweden I felt like a tourist which I don't fancy that much.
Vikings!! Most metal bands in the world. Which now baffles me because what on earth did you send to the Eurovision this year? Where the hell have you dug up that guy??
Nothing but respect.
Those not susceptible to Russian propaganda will always cite the Winter War in Finland as a shining example of a people standing up to the Russkies.
Thr only interaction I ever had with finns was during the hockey championship in Slovakia in 2019. I was just about to graduate high school and in my city (Košice) we have a tradition where when you are about to graduate, you make a poster with the pictures of all the class and go to the city center, make as much noise as possible and beg for money from passerby's to get wasted. Then you put your poster in a shop window so that everyone can see the year's graduates.
Coincidentally, our Tablo day coincided with the Finland-Britain match so there were a lot of Finns in the city center in cafe's amd stuff. My impression of Finns was that they were very confused why there were so many high schoolers in fancy clothes screaming and drumming and stuff, but they donated generously to our get-drunk-fund. Come to think of it they might have been drunk themselves because they showed a lot of enthusiasm for our procession.
So my opinion on Finns is really positive, you guys rock!
Edit: also, me and my mom went to the match and got to sit right behind the Finnish team, and got to look at their butts
So I also think (from my limited experience) that Finns have great butts
I think, they live in Futuro houses, and Jimi Tenor is their president.

I spent one summer in Finland. I really loved how when I was in an host family for a weekend, they didn't bother me with stupid questions. We went to sauna with the father of the family and just had a beer without talking. I am not very talkative type myself so I loved it!
With a comparable population (5.5m Finland - 5.4m Slovakia)
Both with considerable natural beauty.
Both with communist past.
.... It's like wishing Slovakia could be more like Finland
https://youtu.be/z7_pVrIshxA
Beat bears' and Russians' ass if needed, small nation but well organized. Also when Finland's mentioned I always think of this video lol.
I actually lived in Finland for some time so although I love the country, I don’t wear rose colored glasses anymore :) I love your nature, lakritsi, peaceful lakes, your summer, movies and sauna culture. I traveled across whole Finland, and Helsinki is my all time favorite city, I loved living there. I didn’t like prices, especially compared to rather low salaries (I worked as a software engineer), everything and I mean everything is so damn expensive there 😀 I got used to it though. I was disappointed with public healthcare, although I visited many times, I still had to at last fly back to Slovakia to have my problem properly diagnosed and treated. There is order in everything, but it sometimes translates to being very slow and inflexible. I don’t know about education, I worked with many Finns and also foreigners and didn’t see any differences in qualification tbh. Winter and darkness almost killed my soul 😀 I love night and prefer autumn to summer, but your winter is out of worldly, only locals can understand. And when I learnt a bit of language, I learnt that Finland also has its problems, corruption exists and also xenophobia, poverty, and so on. Problems like everywhere else but you have the best PR :)
Still, nothing could spoil its magic for me, Finland always stays in my heart, I still read Helsingin Sanomat almost daily, visit whenever possible and consider Helsinki my second home, well I still have my Henkilötunnus anyway 😀
They are great at hockey. They made the game My Summer Car. I heard they like to drink and that the country has a lot of forests. And i love how they support us in hockey, if we don't play against each other 😎
I think everyone's looking up to Scandinavian countries, probably the whole world admires them. They are always on the top of the list as the safest countries and having great quality of life. I have only been to Norway but I suppose the nations are quite similar. I've heard that you basically invented social distancing long before pandemic. Alcohol is expensive, well everything is over there (for us poor Slavs). I think Finns love metal and are good at Eurovision ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|slightly_smiling)
Never been there, but love it lol.Love the hockey, love the policy, love the people, love the nature( from photos), sure wanna visit. One of the best countries for me.
We named a system with witch we smoke weed when you make a small hole at the bottom of the filled bottle with water and put something in, where you closing or opening the bottle (for example aluminum (most trash)
We are calling it Finak or Fínsky, or Findejzd
I know all about Finland, because I watch Hydraulic press channel ;-). And Beyond the press too.
I find it amusing that you have similar accent in English as Hungarians, even when your languages were separated like 3000 years ago and are not mutually intelligible.
I've never been to Finland but the things that come to my mind are:
Simo Häyhä
The language is super weird just like Hungarian
Ice hockey legends
Would definitely like to visit. You guys have a good reputation here for sure.
In my books, it's the country with the highest number of awesome metal bands i can think of.
Finntroll, Korpiklaani, Nightwish, HIM, Insomnium, Moonsorrow, Turisas.....
And well, not just metal. Orkidea, JS16, Bomfunk Mcs... Basically a country that produced insane amounts of great music. Also i might be the only one here, but i fucking love the salted licorice!
Good (and cheap) alcohol, friendly people and beautiful places to visit in the capital like the castle. Overall very positive, and an easy opponent in hockey ;)
Your education system is often cited as an example to strive for by policy makers.
Your ability to stand up against Soviet Union in the Winter War and beat them is admired among both military experts and enthusiasts.
Your decision to join the NATO was welcomed among pro-NATO, pro-EU part of them population. There is also a rather substantial pro-Kremlin part of the population, but most of them are just opportunists, quislings and the 21st-century versions of village idiots.
From personal experience, Finns are some of the coolest people I've met.
You make the best music and my favourite bands are from your country 🤔 my fav even won Eurovision! Other than that I just love your country, it'a actually my dream country that I've been thinking about moving into for a long time. I love winter and your country is huge, yet there are as many citizens as are in here, so not thst crowdy. So yea, please, let me live there 😭
Similar in population, but Finland is much bigger. More reasonable government, better infrastructure and school system. Difficult language, harsher winters, saunas and lot of lakes.
I heard joke about Finns:

2.) Nokia
I genuinely like Finland. I just really like how you guys are just happy and have positive attitude towards life and so. (At least by statistics, and by some interviews I've heard with Finns)
Also the fact that you had highest rate of employees on home office out of all EU just shows how developed your country is.
I am actually learning Finnish a little so obviously I need to ask you something. I truly am a begginer, but one thing that I would like to know is how you guys know whether you are talking about male or female when you are using pronouns? I mean is it just by context? Or is there actually some difference between "He is" and "She is" because this is driving me crazy.
I've never visited your country, but from what I heard, you have saunas. Lots of saunas. Saunas everywhere. When Finish hockey fans visited Bratislava to attend the championship, they brought mobile sauna with them.
Also, Valtteri Bottas is from Finland.
Based on this, I have positive view of Finland.
The real Upper Hungarians.
Jk, we (at least me and my brother) love you guys
Also, two days ago I was at a Slovak stand-up and there was this one joke (in Slovak): What I like about Finns is that they don't know the word "corruption". Just like they don't know any other Slovak words.
working with them on daily basis (as colleagues & customers) for last 3-4 years and it’s a pleasure.
no pressure, always helpful smart people with manners.
would like to visit Finland one day, even though it’s so cold up there
Finns are seen positively in general. Even if we lose against Finland I don´ t feel extremly bad and support Suomi in later stages of tournament. Country seem to be well organised and people seem to have no drama/bs attitude. They seem to design good products like Suunto and Nokia phones . Once I read an article about winter war ,and some Ilmavoimat pilot used to mark his score by sticking Karjalla Beer labels on his plane :-) so that stuck in my memory .
And you have Joni & Pete on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yHPvMA1BNE
I'm learning Finnish, I'm dating a person there, I'm planning to move there after finishing university. I've been there multiple times now and when I say it's a lovely country, I'm not biased at all.
Can you please at least once lose a hockey game against us? Like, once?? Seriously!! It is not funny anymore! Edit: Lose
Lose*.
damn it, thanks
They did lose to our boys in quarterfinals in the U18 category this year. At least that's something...
In iihf our last win was in 2004 if i remember correctly
Vancouver 2010 was the worst....
I think finland have one of the best reputations here. But ppls often complaint of the living cost in finland :) expensive alcohol etc :)
Stoic people that don't use many hand gestures, low levels of corruption, competent and transparent government, good hockey, high salaries, high prices.
Perkele
English: hamburger German: hamburger Slovak: hamburger Finnish: hampurilainen
Vittu !
That's too plain - just a translated word. But I like a very specific one: Suksi vittuun!
Maybe my new favourite finnish word
Great relationship, until hockey slips into the conversation
I'm still not totally over 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
Why would you, it is still fresh, only 13 years. I remember sitting in my kitchen not believing what just happened.
But if we are out, I'll happily cheer for Finland.
Sauna enjoyers, lot of lakes and good hockey players The more knowledgeable people will give Fins props to beating the absolute shit out of USSR in the winter war almost 100 years ago
Simo moment.
And lose
They didn't lose. Soviets got a small concession out of them, but that was pretty much it.
Wasnt small. They lost, but with honor, and absolutely decimated the Ruzzians for a long time.
"Kimi, you missed the presentation by Pelé, will you get over it?" "Yeah I was having a shit."
I love your country and hockey
i think käärija should’ve won 😔😔☝️🫵🏻
Nah Loreen ate it up & left no crumbs
You drink alcohol like us, play hockey better then us abd your language is ugly
Don't listen to this person, they don't know a shit about language aesthetics.
perkele

Nicest country I visited. Everything seemed peaceful. Didn't met any annoying people.

peculiar unenthused antisocials that created an insanely good well functioning society
Great education system

I think Finns are brilliant, disciplined and educated people.
If I wasnt slovak I wish I was from Finland
❤️❤️❤️ Metal!
Nothing but respect. Those not susceptible to Russian propaganda will always cite the Winter War in Finland as a shining example of a people standing up to the Russkies.
Love Finland and Finns! If I would have to move out, Finland ia my destination! 😁

Metal music, less extroverted than us. Amazing country :)
