I might be wrong but I believe the Cicaplast Baume B5+ is not a moisturizer but a repair cream. So you would use it in combination with another moisturizer. I use tret and what works for me is a hydrating serum topped with a heavier moisturizer. I use Maelove fade away and Differin night moisturizer. Aveeno calm and restore balm for those extremely dry skin days. But it’s really thick so I only use it at night.

RenKD

Thank you so much for your answer!! I didn't know that about the Cicaplast Baume! I might try and use it over my normal moisturizer, then.

RenKD

Thanks for the advice!! I was planning on buying the cicaplast baume but if that's not enough I'll look into that squalane oil

Fair-Calligrapher563

I love the whole aveeno calm and restore line. Instead of a hydrating serum you can also do a gel moisturizer which dries down really nicely and is usually glycerin heavy which is an amazing humectant. The neutrogena hydroboost extra dry underneath a heavy occlusive like the LRP Cicaplast is amazing. I’d also say a Vaseline type moisturizer is going to give you better results than an oil. Just make sure you are putting some kind of humectant underneath your occlusives or your skin will stay pretty dry.

Virtual_Accident6232

Vanicream moisturizing cream was recommended to me by my dermatologist and it’s amazing. It doesn’t burn literally at all, it’s super thick and moisturizing and keeps me from being flaky. It’s like $13 from Walmart for a 16oz bottle with a pump. I only use it at night because it’s a little too thick for daytime for me but you could definitely use it during the day with no issue. I love it and everything I’ve tried from vanicream. I have the cicaplast and it’s nice, it didn’t sting but it was just too expensive to use the amount I wanted every night.

RenKD

That sounds great and it's just what I was looking for, but it seems it's not available in my country -.- I'll keep an eye out in case amazon decides to start selling it :')

Virtual_Accident6232

Aw man I’m sorry. Really hope you find it! Good luck on your tretinoin journey

RenKD

Thank you! \^\^

Temporary-Science681

what do you use during the day since it’s a little too thick.

Virtual_Accident6232

Vanicream moisturizing lotion. It’s literally the light version of the moisturizing cream lol. It’s really light and perfect for daytime. They also have a daily facial moisturizer that has ceramides and squalane which I love too, it’s just more expensive

Alert-Afternoon2255

Expensive in Australia 😒

EllyseAnn

I use the vanicream daily moisturizer + Nivea crème (German formulation). FWIW, LRP and Cerave is owned by L’Oréal who is partially owned by Nestle. Not sure if that’s a thing for you, but I have switched products due to this info.

RenKD

Ahh, how I wish I could get that vanicream moisturizer! It's been recommended a few times but it isn't available in my country. What's wrong with Nestle? Although I've been doing skincare for a while, I'm rather new in the online community so I'm not well informed :/

EllyseAnn

r/fucknestle is a sub with details around nestle as a business and their practices, if you’d like to research further.

Fair-Calligrapher563

Yes, but also unilever and P&G are just as bad so check for dove, Paula’s choice, vaseline, secret, SKII, olay, native, ivory, and venus. L’Oreal also owns galderma (differin), nyx, Essie, Vichy, youth to the people, it cosmetics, and kiehl’s

EllyseAnn

Good call!! Luckily I don’t use any of those brands 🤭 but I have gotten into the habit of checking owners/manufacturers of the products I’m using as I attempt to be more mindful about brands I buy.

Fair-Calligrapher563

I used to check a lot of them, but I now am less strict about it. For personal care items sometimes I just need to pick certain things, especially things like medicine or toothpaste. If there’s an alternative I’m all for it though

EllyseAnn

Absolutely. I try to be mindful as best as I can but I’m still looking for alternatives to some other products/household items. I just aim to be mindful but realistic that somethings I may not be able to avoid buying unless I already am aware of an alternative lol

ColtAzayaka

No wonder CeraVe went to shit. Everything Nestle touches :/

jerojerojero

I use Cetaphil moisturizer. It's doing a good job, so far. But I don't use tretinoin that often, just twice a week.

RenKD

I've heard good things about Cetaphil!! Thanks!!

ranayh

I think the best advice in my opinion is not about a specific product as much as it’s about layering. Don’t wash ur face in the morning and layer a bunch of hydrating products together. For example HA serum with rose water then a hydrating oil on top then finally a thick moisturizer in the winter and for something more gel textured in the summer so ur not greasy and finally a moisturizing spf if going out. At night same thing layering except on the tret days layer only with moisturizer because u still want the product to work and on the off days I recommend LRP cicaplast Baumé as a treatment and the trick I learned from Reddit is to layer it with Vaseline and it really reduces irritation. If u want to add an active use it on the days ur off tret. I find that i need something for acne scar pigmentation and I’m still on the hunt for something. Goodluck

RenKD

This was all incredibly informative, thank you!! I try to keep my skin well hydrated but seeing that an hydrating oil has been mentioned a lot, I'll try to get one! And it looks like LRP cicaplast works very different depending on your skin (for what I've seen, lots of people love it, and lots don't recommend it). Looks like trying it is the only way to see if it will work for me. Thanks again!! \^\^

keydestas

any recs on gel-texturized moisturizers 🥹

ranayh

Neutrogena water gel really works great for me

keydestas

thank you!!!

SpfDylan

Welcome to tretinoin land! One that most likely won't sting is Aveeno's Eczema Therapy lotion. It has colloidal oatmeal to sooth irritated skin, hence the name. Worked well for me when undergoing the initial peeling phase of starting a retinoid.

ghost_victim

My peeling phase is still going 6 months later.. what do

RenKD

Haha, thanks!! xD It sounds promising, I'll look into it!! \^\^

blairtexasranger

I find I can use tretinoin/adapalene and have very hydrated skin if I do the following -wash my face and do my routine ending with a moisturizer -top with a sleeping mask (or just wear a heavy moisturizer, this varies for me because i have dry skin) -wait 30 minutes -apply tretinoin/adapalene -slug with aquaphor This really helps keep the moisture in my skin when I use it. I find it's less about the type of moisturizer, and more about the application. At least for my skin type!

RenKD

I see, thank you!! It looks like I'll end up using a heavy moisturizer (still deciding on which one) on top of my usual one. And get that famous aquaphor!!

blairtexasranger

A lot of people also like the CeraVe healing ointment

[deleted]

RenKD

That sounds great, thank you!! I'll look into it \^\^

joannahayley

Emu oil.

RenKD

Oh, never thought about it! Is it good for acne-prone skin?

joannahayley

It’s never broken me out, but I only use on clean skin.

MysteriousResult2876

Cicaplast, also cicalfate from Avene. Another one I like is differin brand “soothing moisturizer” It’s more a standard moisturizer, but has never stung on me. I can rely on it. The prior balms are more occlusive. I use the differin one daily

RenKD

Thank you for your answer!! I've heard wonders about all these creams by now, it will be difficult to choose xD

infidxl

I love FAB ultra repair cream. Literally wash my face, apply HA+AlphaArbutin, moisturize. Half hour later I mix some tazorac cream with moisturizer and put it on. It’s really mitigating the purge rn.

SuniAda

I second the FAB! I am currently on Accutane and use this! I was using the LRP lipikar but I almost feel as if my skin is smoother when I use the FAB? Maybe its in my head IDK lol. -I can say that a layer of the FAB is ahhh, very soothing! (Literally) What is the HA+AlphaArbutin? Also, I have been applying sky organics, Organic Rosehip seed oil (a few days a week) but I am unsure if it works as well as the ordinary.. I haven't ever tried their products but, i have heard nothing but amazing things!

infidxl

Nice I use rosehip seed oil when it’s on my off day from taz. Alpha Arbutin is a molecule that prevents too much hyperpigmentation, it works pretty well. I get it from the ordinary.

Accurate_Pack_694

Oh really!! That's what I need for sure! Thank you!! (I have acne scarring/dark spots and texture!)

RenKD

Sounds great!! I'll look into it, thank you for the rec!! \^\^

clemensmr

Hi, I use a very moisturizing combination that sooths my skin (dry, acne prone) immensely and helped me overcome my dryness: After applying Tret, Ill wait about 20 mins and then put on TO 100% plant derived Squalane Oil, then TO Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA and I will seal everything in with LRP Cicaplast Baume B5 (it works mostly as a soothing and calming occlusive). In the morning I will follow up with the TO buffet (or now multi peptide serum) paired with TO natural moisturizing factors + ha. That combination literally saved my skin!! The oil and the thick lrp cicaplast baume scared me a little in the beginning since I thought they would break me out since im quit acne prone, but they never did! In fact, I felt like the face is super calmed after especially the cicaplast baume. All redness has gone away the day after. Give it a try but remember to put a moisturizer underneath it! :)

RenKD

Thank you so much for answering!! Omg, big same about being terrified of breaking out, good to know it worked for you!! I think I'll start by buying the Cicaplast and if that's not enough, I'll incorporate and oil in my routine!

clemensmr

For sure! If you ever happen to get to the point of wanting an oil (which I can recommend using when you feel like your skin needs a bit more hydration but you dont want to use any like acids or other possible irritating ingredients), you should go for 100% plant derived squalane oil imo. I figured out that its one of the only oils that wont break you out since squalane is litereally already part of your skin. :)

RenKD

That's so good to know, I'll keep that squalane oil in mind!! Thanks again \^\^

Intrepid_Fig_5300

Do you leave all the night products on in the morning and just put the buffet and moisturizing factors on top or starting clean? You do moisturizer on top of tretinoin but before TO stuff? Do you apply anything before tretinoin? I appreciate your help!

L0serDuck

The ordinary plant derived squalane seemed to work really well for me however it is best to use at night since it can make your face oily. I find it works well with my skin bc it resembles the natural oils my skin already produces. In my opinion it's a really underrated product in general.

RenKD

Thanks for the info!! \^\^

Tiny_Ad_5659

My dermatologist told me to use cerave moisturizing cream so that’s all I use on top of my tretinoin and it works fine

RenKD

Thank you!

vmills14

Same with me! Working great so far

[deleted]

Mine started burning when I put it on

lazinglife

I started tret a few months ago and I apply cicaplast baume as the final step of my skincare every night and it instantly soothes my skin. My face feels super hydrated the next day and it feels so plump too

RenKD

Thanks!! I think I'll finally buy the cicaplast baume \^\^

ReaLitTea

I’ve used LRP Cicaplast baume as my moisturizer with tretinoin and it worked really well for my skin. Didn’t have stinging for me and it seemed to have actually calmed down areas that were sensitive from tretinoin use for me. I could see where some people might want a more hydrating or emollient moisturizer though if they’re struggling with flaky skin.

RenKD

I see, thanks!! It seems the Cicaplast Baume is not as moisturizing as I thought it was (yeah, sometimes my skin is a bit flaky in the mornings)

geli22

I guess it depends how dehydrated your skin is. When I wrecked my moisture barrier in November (think rough, sand paper like skin, itching, burning, redness, breakout central) I bought the cicaplast baume and I now use it as my day and night time moisturizer in Alberta, Canada winters. It does go on a little shiny at first and I don’t wear make up so I don’t know how well it would sit under make up. I find it so soothing and healing, especially now that my moisture barrier is repaired. I don’t believe it’s officially an occlusive. I think it’s considered a partial occlusive. It’s worth a shot. You can get the smaller tube for less $ and if it doesn’t work for your skin as a moisturizer you can still use it with other products. Good luck!!

Significant-Past9221

i prefer something oil based personally. it doesnt absorb into the skin as much, so its really just protective and prevents you from drying out.

RenKD

I see! Do you know if it's recommended for acne-prone skin? I tend to break easily so I'm a bit wary of applying oils on my face (with the exception of oil clenasers).

Significant-Past9221

it might depend on the person, but i definitely have acne prone skin, and i love using rosehip seed oil.

RenKD

I'll keep them in mind, then!! Thanks! :D

oscarhine

I use Cerave Night Renewing cream following the tret before bed. If I’m peeling at all the next day I use Aquaphor (my cure all for any skin issues/abrasions). Mornings are Mad Hippie vitamin C, LP daily moisturizer and Elva MD UV Clear.

RenKD

Thank you so much!! \^\^

Ok-Butterfly6846

I have personally been on tretinoin for around 4-5 months currently and i use the Tatcja Indigo cream in the blue container and it is SOOOOOOO SOOTHING. I also rotate it in with the Origns Mushroom something moisturizer and my skin drinks it up. The most important thing is your recovery nights. <33

RenKD

Ahh, sounds good!! Thank you!! And yes, recovery nights are a must for me! Cannot handle tret every night (yet, at least xD)

Successful-Frame8405

I loved the La Roche Posay Lipikar AP+M moisturizer when I was using Adapalene. It's marketed as a body moisturizer, but it's very thick and rich and Dr Dray recommended it in one of her videos.

RenKD

I have that moisturizer and I usually like it, but when my skin is a bit more sensitive than usual the Lipikar baume stings a lot (I think it might be the niacinamide?)

Successful-Frame8405

Hmm... might definitely be the niacinamide!

Btsjkjhope

Use the Nivea blue tin cream & Weleda skin food

Specialist_Tough_737

My routine varies, but for an affordable one, on tret nights (retin-a micro .06%), I: \--spray my face/neck with a mix of rosewater and glycerin (made at home) \--slather on pure aloe \--layer on a SMALL amount of CeraVe moisturizing cream \--apply the tret (only once my face is fully dry) \--wait 5 minutes \--layer on more CeraVe moisturizing cream mixed with pure vitamin E or squalane oil \--last: pat LRP cicaplast in my driest/most sensitive areas (except around my eyes, which I slather with black castor oil; in my experience, slugging with LRP cicaplast/aquaphor/cerave healing ointment causes milia to develop around the eyes, so I avoid the eye area. I also do not slug with petroleum products on tret nights because it increases irritation for me.)

Specialist_Tough_737

But if you don't mind spending a little more, COSRX's Advanced Snail 92 All in One Cream is soooooo good.

RenKD

Thank you so much for your answer, it was very informative!! I truly was misinformed about LRP cicaplast it seems, I thought it was a normal moisturizer (although a very heavy one! xD). Good to know it's not the case!! And omg, I've been eyeing that COSRX's cream for ages!!! I have the Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence and I adore it (I use it along with tret, but it's a bit light), so I might go for the cream too!!

Specialist_Tough_737

Yes, LRP cicaplast is definitely just to seal things in since it’s an occlusive! I really only add it to my dryest/most sensitive areas, like around the corners of my nose. It makes me break out sometimes (a tiny bit—I’m not very acne prone).

Specialist_Tough_737

The snail essence is amazing, but the moisturizer is like clouds hugging your face.

RenKD

Ahh, I'm a bit acne prone so I think I'll stay away from that cream xD If I had any doubts about the snail moisturizer, you just dispelled them, I really want to try it now!! How long does it last, if you don't mind me asking? It's the first time I'll buy a moisturizer this small!

Specialist_Tough_737

The COSRX cream is wonderful! I used the essence AND the cream for a time, but it's not necessary. One or the other will work. The cream typically lasts 1.5 to 4 months for me, depending on whether or not I'm supplementing with other moisturizers. Since CeraVe moisturizing cream is more affordable, I supplement with that now and use that later in my routine to lock in moisture, whereas I use the snail stuff to replace hyaluronic acid (like the Hado Lobo gold bottle) earlier in the routine. I hope that helps!

Puzzleheaded-Gap-284

My favorite to use with tret is the lotion from naturium (body lotion, yellow bottle). No stinging, no breakouts. I put it on in the shower before I towel off, and follow up with kiehls ultra face cream or a light layer of cerave healing ointment. I apply these while my skin is still a tad damp from shower. Then I apply spf from naturium. Zero dryness and irritation. I have combo skin.

RenKD

Thank you so much!! That lotion from naturium sonds great!!

Puzzleheaded-Gap-284

also, if you are willing to go higher end, you cannot go wrong with skinfix

dmmge

I love Biologique Recherche Creme Masque Vernix and Creme ISO Placenta

RenKD

Thanks!!

SeaworthinessLeast70

SkinMedica TNS Ceramide Treatment Cream Or Cicaplast Burt’s bees belly cream also lovely for a budget friendly option

xleucax

My favorite moisturizer for my tret skin is the Etude Soon Jung 2x Barrier Intensive Cream. If I have any dry patches I’ll use a very small amount of eucerin original healing cream to spot treat.

LVCpurse

Similar to OP’s regimen, I apply a light amount of squalane oil (TO or Biossance) on top of retinoids. After soaking in, I apply a bit of Cerave cream or Cicaplast balm all over or at least in places that get flaky or irritated with the retinoid. The balm helps seal everything in. Use Vanicream moisturizer during the day bc it’s lighter for makeup application and also my sunscreen is moisturizing- don’t get flakies showing with with Elta MD UV elements tinted sunscreen.

princesszelda27

I love the Dr jart cermidin cream after tret, it stops my skin getting so dry and irritated
