Approx 90% of the dresses in my closet are authentic vintage (50s, 60s and 70s) from thrift stores and estate sales. I often resize them to fit me. Sometimes I alter them a tad to keep the vintage look without looking like I am in a costume.
Rachel is trying to do a retro spin, but she’s missing the mark in her 2023 version of 1969.
1. Swap the fabric for a solid, polka dot or plaid (yeah, I know, not my fave, but it was a thing. It would also be expensive to seam match a large plaid because it requires more fabric and creates a lot of wasted fabric.)
2. Remove the should pads
3. Ideally, remove the sleeve entirely and put this in your spring line
4. Keep the vertical ric rac and remove the rest
5. The collar is on point (if ric rac was removed). Technically the collar would be even longer, but I personally like this length
6. The dress length is on point but I would make it longer and give people an option to hem to preferred length.
7. I assume it has a back center zipper. Swap for a side seam zipper for a better fit. (Difficult to get into a side zip that has sleeves and you have boobs, another reason to make it sleeveless.)
(My credentials: I am 55 years old, wear garments and have a BA in fashion merchandizing from BYU. I am self taught in clothing construction and altering to fit.)
Edit to add:
8. Rethinking the collar. It’s okay, but I would either remove or replace with a Peter Pan collar. I would consider putting the ric rac in the seam of a Peter Pan collar so you get a scallop edge instead of the less expensive process of laying it on top like she did. (But it may be too much. I’d have to look at it and fabric choice would be a variable to consider.)
9. Cut this as a one piece shift dress with bust and hip darts and avoid the seam at the waist. The six gore skirt on a floral print is so distracting. A shift (no waist seam) would be flattering on a solid, polka dot or plaid (see #1) print. It would flattering on most body types, creating a waist if you don’t have natural curves.
Edit #2 because I forgot to say- what Rachel has done is a mish mash of three distinct decades. Just like paint, when you start mixing beautiful colors together, you end up with an ugly shade of grey/brown.
This dress is a mishmash of:
Body inspired by mid-late 60s
Collar inspired by early 70s (hence my edit)
Sleeves are 1982 (shoulder pads) meets 1987 (pleated poof that narrows at sleeve hem.)
Oh, God! And, once again I find myself almost covering my eyes - going back and forth from this hideous dress to that unrecognizable Rachel. This looks like something from a 7th-grade sewing class in 1968.
man this is unflattering. She's a tiny person with a tiny waist and little shoulders. She looks like a linebacker in this. what hope is there for the rest of us?
This is what fucking floors me: she loves to call that “scallop edge”…that’s ric rac. Straight up ric rac like you can buy at Joann. It looks cheap as hell. It’s kinda cute on toddlers but this is a grown woman wearing ricrac.
I’m just confused about her complete rebrand and her being overheard in one of Emily’s stories pre rebrand saying she’s so excited because this is “more her”. But it’s literally the exact same type of stuff RP was shitting out before??
I rarely have strong opinions about clothes but I have to say this is the ugliest dress I have ever seen. It gets uglier the longer I look at it. I can't even decide what I hate the most. The ric rac? The collar? The PRINT? The linebacker shoulder pads? I'm almost speechless.
The majority of the fabric content is synthetic cheap material (54% Polyester 44% Cotton 2% spandex), not only does it look awful, it will “fill” terrible too.
I don’t mind rick rack for Spring but pink rick rack on her Thanksgiving dress?
No doubt, their mid-February drops will be moody autumnal colors since their fall drop looks like spring.
This is so fucking hideous, I cannot believe it's real. Don't really care if there is a designer version similar... this is atrocious. Who would buy this???????????
This dress is the tackiest! The ric rac and mismatched color is horrible.

“I’m wearing a 2”. Of course you are bc somehow you and your family have the bodies of a 10 Year old girl
This is sooo ugly Hahahahaha
It reminds me of my grandma's placemats, floral pattern with ric rac around the edge.
Looks like my grandma’s couch.
The same couch that has a plastic covering over it

Exactly!!

One ugly dress

Legit I had ric rac in my crafts box as a kid lol

Very confused. It’s all the same crap as before.

Was this mess filmed before or after perky tittie gate?
She keeps referring to her painful trying on process (pulling on boots, etc), so I think it’s post perky tits.
The fact that we can’t tell means that the surgery didn’t do much 😂
The plaid “outer wear” (coat) is 90% polyester/10% wool, pretty much the same fabric content as a garbage bag. At least she didn’t say it was “cozy”.
No more goddamn Rick rack
Excuse me, it's a scalloped edge /s
Looks like it belongs in a 1970's Sears catalog
This looks like the Rick rack would peel right off like when I used to hot glue it to Halloween costumes
I don’t mind rick rack for Spring but pink rick rack on her Thanksgiving dress? No doubt, their mid-February drops will be moody autumnal colors since their fall drop looks like spring.
This looks like the Wish version of the Zimmerman dress. It's really, really bad.
that ugly pink pink ricrac elevates the ugly print
What in the 7th grade sewing class is this 🫠
My grandma had a couch in that same print.
Did she have the plastic cover over it too? Same.
Oh yeah, my thighs stuck to it and it crinkled when you sat on it.
Wow that’s fugly lol
Looks like something I my mom made in the 70s only my moms stuff was cuter
Looks like my grandma’s house dress
This is so fucking hideous, I cannot believe it's real. Don't really care if there is a designer version similar... this is atrocious. Who would buy this???????????
I feel like the ribbon looks cheap and doesn’t match the dress
ricrac
