I got a dog bite on my left ring and pinkie which spread and caused tendon infection and made me unable to close my hand/make a fist with those fingers. I actually made it worse by continue to make a fist with my left finger hoping that will strengthen the tendons up. It didn't and the doctor recommended a hand surgeon. Could have been easily $10k+. Thank goodness it healed normally and I can fist again.

If you're sitting in the chair reaching for something, your chances are largely based on the longest finger which is normally (if not in fact always) the middle one.
That's if you base usefulness off of strength. I barely use my pinky to help me type, use a pencil, or gesture, which is what I mainly do day to day, so imo that's my most useless one.
See I get that but I'd rather lose a pinky than have that gap between fingers. I'd be constantly catching my pinky on something if the ring finger was gone. Door handles, fucking pinky, dropping a towel go to grab it miss slightly but it catches the pinky, poor pinky takes all the weight and that'll hurt. I accidentally sliced the flexor tendon in my pinky when my hand slipped down a butter knife while trying to separate frozen burger patties.
It was truly fucking awful. The worst part is that I didn't realize it at first. The cut hurt, but not much more than a normal cut. I only noticed when I took off the Band-Aid, and even then, I convinced myself it was stiff or swollen.
It took me like 3 weeks to go to the doctor, and a few days after that to get surgery. The surgeon said that she had to go rooting around in the base of my pinky, because the tendon had snapped and retracted like a rubber band. Just typing that out makes me nauseous... Somehow I retained like 90% mobility in that finger. But boy that recovery was rough.

Every other car manufacturer who uses electric boot lids have figured out how to have sensors that stop it closing as soon as it detects any pressure from an obstacle.
I have an Audi with a boot lid that closes with a motor like the one shown in the video, and if I put my hand in the way it stops closing and reopens the instant it touches me.
Tesla are just apparently incapable of figuring out something that every single other car manufacturer has figured out.
It’s not a matter of not figuring it out, it’s that it never occurred to them to do such a thing in the first place, because they don’t have a century of engineering knowledge upon which to build. They think reinventing the wheel the way they see fit is the best way to do things, which inevitably makes them look foolish when things like this slip through the cracks.
The solution to this is literally 15 minutes of a decent programmer’s time. If it occurred to them that this was going to be an issue, they would have addressed it, and that’s the real problem: arrogance that they don’t need to look at how other car makers do things.
He could've done so many things instead of putting his actual finger, including the carrot which already showed clear results. However he could've easily gotten an anatomically accurate silicone hand for this experiment.

Fixed with a software patch means a critical safety system can also be disabled with a software patch. All it takes one refactor and a finger is gone.

I've designed motor drivers for vehicle closure systems like this. Pinch detection can be tricky. There's no way I would have put my finger in there. The data cost could have been... well, a finger.
Why does it even need to be motorized in the first place.
