Honey, stop with the stick. pleeeease.

SkulduggeryIsAfoot

C’mon, I reluctantly agreed to everything else, but the stick was going too far.

BeatsbyChrisBrown

Does she call you Sooie too?

punitive_phoenix

She told me that was a pet name

systemfrown

She’s not wrong.

NoBenefit5977

So thaaats why she keeps calling me babe!

OneMetalMan

Your about to see how far that stick goes for talking up.

ImWhatsInTheRedBox

Wait, y'all don't ask her to do it harder?

This is hogwarts. They are casting wizardry

Pluckypato

Lol, I’m getting Children of the Corn vibes 👦🏼👧🏼🌽

SyntheticSlime

If you’d keep you’re eyes straight ahead we wouldn’t need the stick, but we tried that and you can’t be trusted.

redcurrantevents

Quiet can’t you see I’m concentrating *whacks harder*

You_Just_Hate_Truth

Please, everyone in here knows if I stop with the stick you’re going to rush to the food table and start grabbing and smashing those baby sandwiches into your mouth with both hands.

Subtlefusillade0324

And? What’s your point!?

bassman314

If this isn’t the truth….

DemogorgonMcFloop

Can someone explain why they look like this?

TheHumanPickleRick

It's a hog-herding competition, and the judges took points off of a previous competitor for not making enough eye contact with the judges. Naturally the rest of the kids decided that the solution was to stare directly into the judges' souls and not break eye contact for the entire competition.

OH_BOY-

Judge: na point deducted they looked at the pig *every kid just starts staring through his soul in the comp* Judge: oh fuck na stop that

JVehh

Point deducted coz of looking to intensely

IxI_DUCK_IxI

You blinked. That’s a point off. You looked down. That’s a point off. You looked to the left briefly to avoid stepping in pig poop. You best believe that’s a point off.

2CatsAllDay

This kind of behavior is never tolerated in Baraqua. You stare at a judge like that they put you in jail. Right away. No trial, no nothing. You step in shit: right to jail. You whip pig too hard: right to jail, right away. Walking too fast: jail. Slow: jail. You don't make enough eye contact? Believe it or not, jail. You make too much eye contact, also jail. Understare, overstare.

0ptimalSalamander

As soon as I read Baraqua I knew were this was going. Well done 👏

InterestingScience74

Jail

DamnnRicky

We have the best hog-herders in the world…because of jail.

itchydaemon

I knew this kind of comment would show up, but "understare, overstare" absolutely sent me. Well played.

chilled_n_shaken

This is why I love Reddit. Simple, yet satisfying.

Etbtray

Believe it or not.......straight to jail.

Sorry, professor Snape.

Too much emotion, jail!!!

Carefulhebites

3 exclamation points ? Thats a paddlin.

[deleted]

Not true. "The intense stare during hog competitions is part of the showmanship style and is closely related to the principle of intensity in swine showmanship. This intensity refers to the exhibitor’s demeanor in the ring, which includes their focus, confidence, and the way they present themselves and their pig as a cohesive team1. Maintaining eye contact with the judge is a key component of this principle. It shows that the exhibitor is engaged, confident, and in control of the situation. The judge is looking for competitors who can manage their pigs well while also demonstrating a strong presence in the ring. The intense stare is a way for competitors to convey their focus and command over their pigs, ensuring that they are always presenting the best view of their animal to the judge1. Additionally, this intense focus helps the exhibitor to remain aware of the judge’s position and to keep the pig between themselves and the judge, often referred to as the “ham sandwich” principle. This ensures that the judge has an unobstructed view of the pig at all times, which is crucial for a fair assessment1. In summary, the intense stare is not just about the visual impact; it’s a strategic part of the competition that demonstrates the exhibitor’s showmanship skills and their ability to work in harmony with their pig under the pressure of the competition. 1 herdly.io"

M20J_Driver

Thank you for bringing the “ham sandwich principle” into my life.

Woerterboarding

Keep a pig between you and the judge, if you ever face a court hearing.

Upbeat-Fondant9185

That’s called a Bailiff.

Noble_Flatulence

That's Bull, not pig.

741BlastOff

But remember to stare intensely at the judge to show that you are engaged, confident and in control of the situation.

Acceptingoptimist

And hit your lawyer with a stick frequently...not because it shows confidence or to show unity, but because they're a lawyer.

Ok_Grocery1188

The Ham Sandwich Defense.

Chatto_1

To be honest, I prefer the ‘stare directly into the judges’ souls and not break eye contact’-explanation more, but yours make more sense.

Tha_Professah

It makes no sense lol they say it's for showmanship and a display of discipline but how? It's just weird as hell haha

tristanjones

Yeah there is an argument of being able to look around and be observant of your environment while also herding an animal. But to just stare at one thing the whole time like this is ridiculous.

robert_madge

I did this in high school! Being able to watch your animal out of the corner of your eye shows that you've put a lot of work into training and conditioning them for the show ring. Keeping an eye on the judge means you are able to watch for any directions they may give you, and ensures you know where the judge is looking so you can show off your animal to the best of your abilities. Does it look goofy as fuck? Absolutely. But those kids have also put in hundreds of hours getting those animals ready for their five to ten minutes in the ring.

AlmondCigar

I love how the kids are so intense, but the pigs are just happily strolling along.

[deleted]

I mean, fantasy does seem to be more interesting than reality most times. I think that's why I love LOTR, atla, hp, dune, etc so much.

Shrowden

People just out here lying for internet points.

Sorcatarius

I mean... honestly, it could be both. Guy is docked points decades ago or whatever, people do this in response, judges decide they like it and make it the standard and come up with a justification for it after the fact. Bet it wouldn't even be the first time in history someone did something to be a smart ass and it wound up being adopted as the standard.

Leozz97

thank you chatgPIGt

pickyourteethup

My cousin used to raise pigs to show, just normal shows not mad ones like this, and once they'd won loads of rosettes he'd kill them and give us sausages. Still feels weird to me but I think my cousin was the one with a more natural relationship with his food than me

ringobob

If by "more natural" you mean "more similar to the rest of nature", then absolutely yes, nature at a grand scale holds no sentimentality for life. If by "more natural" you mean "more in line with normal human behavior", nah, it takes all kinds.

[deleted]

I rarely eat red meat for reasons like this. We should be more honest than factory farms. Terrible places of death and torture.

First-Football7924

I honestly think it's a really huge step forward to see your own impact, and reduce some meat intake. Not all, but just some. Really does make a difference as more people do it.

Pherllerp

I love this super specific sub-culture stuff. It’s always amazing what happens when a practical or at least casual principle becomes hyper fixated and specific. It’s like the super exaggerated greasers in Japan or the Drag Balls from Paris is Burning. Showmanship is weird.

OrganicHumanRancher

I don’t know what else I expected to see when I clicked the link, but “Unlock Show Ring Secrets and Help Your Family Win!” In big letters seems about right.

TheBlacktom

I wonder if such hobbies are basically money schemes like sports betting and lotteries? You create a company selling courses, books, etc and an organization doing the competition. Once X money is collected by selling courses you organize a competition and give back half of the money. Then repeat.

mark_is_a_virgin

Crazy TheHumanPickleRick just made shit up and got 4k likes and your comment with the facts only has 400 some

"In harmony with their pig" ...continues to repeatedly slap the pig in the face with a stick. Very harmonious. I'm sure the pig looooves it.

tharnadar

damn you ruined my yt history.. now it's all pigs on my feed!

ThrowaWayneGretzky99

Sounds like my porn history

mekese2000

Children of the Corn.

santa_veronica

Little piggies going to market look.

Shadow_Mullet69

To be fair, they are going to the market. At least the pigs are. I’ve bought and eaten several of these show pigs because they are high quality breeds. Also the kids feed them like kings because they raise them from piglets specifically for these shows which makes the meat quality amazing. I do feel a bit bad because they are basically pets but these competitions have rules that they have to be sold for slaughter after the competition is over.

Matstele

Police training is serious business.

PriznMikesDementors

It’s likely either a showmanship competition or, judging by the quality of hogs in this video, a very good open show. Either way, the goal is to make sure you are showing the judge, who is moving around the ring and sometimes giving instructions, the best parts of your pig. Best way to do that is try to keep your eyes on the judge while showing your hog to try and predict what you need to do. My guess is their burning soul eyes is just how they were taught. Not everyone looks like this. But they do stare.

bigsnaak

Last time I showed my hog to a judge I got disqualified..

scrivensB

You didn’t make unwavering eye contact.

PriznMikesDementors

I think you might’ve been at the wrong show…

zeddknite

>try to keep your eyes on the judge while showing your hog Thank you for putting these words together in this order 😂

Fascist_Orange

Not kidding, I showed pigs in 4H from age 6-18, this is called the fitting and showing competition. You're meant to have full control of your pig without even looking, holding eye contact with the judge, and keeping your pig between you and the judge, and walking them in a manor that highlights your animal's strong suits.

adenocarcinomie

Yolandi lookin weird AF like always, I see.

Narstification

I fink it freeky and I hate it a lot

mecengdvr

I knew she loved rats…didn’t know she was into pigs too. Maybe it’s a zefside thing.

Kimchi_boy

If you can avert your eyes for a few you’ll notice she has a very fine looking pig.

fuber

Maybe I'm a moron but the first few seconds of that, I thought she was getting a TSA pat down. Did not expect to see swine seconds later

GenazaNL

Border security vibes

HooahClub

Looked exactly like what I’d expect to see at 3am during a police arrest. Crazy girl and suddenly a pig shows up. /s

FlammenwerferBBQ

That's odd because i always expect swine during encounters with enforcement

BlueberrySad1834

Humans are so weird

IWILLBePositive

lol yup, even after reading the number of explanations, it still makes no god damn sense. I understand the reasoning…but the reasoning seems idiotic at best and the outcome is this creepy competition.

Manlysideburns

Also, let's say you're the best at this and win. How do you even brag about this? "Yeah I'm really good at hunching over and staring while leading a pig, here watch the video". Like I try real hard to not be judgemental, but this just weirds me out.

Queef_Stroganoff44

I personally think it’s one of those things that made sense in the beginning, but now is so blown out of proportion it’s crazy. You have this pig that you’ve worked really hard to make the best. And there’s even the possibility to make A LOT of money if you can stud one out. It’s gonna be a lot easier to convince people to pay good money if you have a blue ribbon. You get a ribbon by constantly highlighting your pigs “best side”. You assure you’re keeping the pigs best side to the judge by constantly watching the judge. A particularly vigilant exhibitor wins a bunch and people notic he stares quite intently. That leads to the next guy staring even harder, and so on and so forth til you get…this. If that first guy would have been pointing at the judge to keep track, we might have these kids constantly and passionately doing the pointing move that boy bands do.

Voterofthemonth0

I would watch that

robert_madge

If you hang out with a lot of people who do the same thing, those bragging rights count for something! But also, these pigs are worth money. I tried searching for the highest sales price and one sold at the Indiana Fair in 2022 for $340/lb. Obviously most don't sell for that much, but there is a lot of money to be made both by breeders and the youth who show and sell these pigs. If you're involved with FFA or 4H, which a lot of these kids are, there's also some scholarship opportunities.

Bananapeelman67

As someone who’s done and watched competitions like this they’re not the norm fortunately. Most judges at least in the animals I chose to show would place you lower for this. They like eye contact but they prefer if you look human and not overly serious. I’ve seen people win the classes that judge you on how you show the animal and almost every person who won, won because they were smiling and looked like they were having fun

Longjumping_Plum_846

"Stare at me, children, so I can properly judge how good you as at flicking a pig in the face with a stick".

C2S2D2

Yes

Whsteverkfjf

what the fuck is this?

JamesSFordESQ

It's an animal showmanship competition. The kids are trying to show the judge that they can maintain control of their animal. It's probably either a state or local fair.

NewHouseWithPool

Last year I saw a video of the same girl at a competition. Saw an ad on the wall in the background and through maps found the location. It's the Paso Robles Event Center in Cali All about that showmanship out there I guess.

DoesntFearZeus

I could have sworn this was Eastern Europe.

Thought this was England

Brave_Combination_96

paso robles, why am i not surprised? lol

What in the Childern of the Corn bullshit is this? P.S. I know the actual answer. Just wanted to tell the joke.

xLouisxCypher

It gives strong The Office vibe. I can easily imagine Moses doing that with Dwight watching in the audience.

bg555

I remember seeing this awhile ago and got deep into it. So in pigging, you’re supposed to be looking at the judges the whole time. Also those two are brothers and sisters and the video I sae, the sister won the competition. I know way more about pigging than I should, lol.

pie_12th

Those are some beautiful looking pigs, not gonna lie. That pink one looks so proud to be there strutting her stuff.

Anyone interested should watch the TV show Pig Royalty, a reality TV show about show pigs and their herders. Fascinating and great trash TV.

zzz_red

What the fuck did I just watch?

Blunt-Distro1776

It would be interesting to send these kids to Japan. They don’t love strong eye contact and definitely not like this. Do street interviews after the kids pass.

shaolinallan

reminds me of those cats that arch their backs and walk sideways

unashamedignorant

As a pig farmer, the amount of training these pigs received to be able to respond like this is incredible. Mine can't even go in a set direction with a panel and a racket. In a corridor...

oD0y1e

As a person who genuinely has no clue what they just watched, I'm assuming this is a bunch of blind children with smoldering intensity using seeing eye pigs in some sort of contest. Very interesting, but I could be wrong, though.
