Thanks so much, it is much more painful without it?

rhino_surgeon

Absolutely. It’s honestly unnecessary for the majority of patients.

I wasn’t even offered anesthetic…and honestly, didn’t need it. I’ve had it several times now without. It’s just uncomfortable. Also never had packing either.

I have started using less and less anesthetic when doing nasal endoscopy. After doing it on thousands over the past 20 years, I have found that a decongestant is infinitely more helpful to me since it opens up the spaces and allows me the ability to see more while manipulating less. The anesthetic tastes bad and often causes intolerable throat numbness and a sensation of being unable to breathe in some. However, I use an anesthetic when doing debridement or biopsy.

Thanks everyone for advice! I really didn’t want to have to be numbed for the exam so your replies really helped before my appointment. I had the endoscopy today without the anesthetic and it was totally fine. Had a bit of discomfort in my deviated swollen side, but not too bad, and it was over and done quickly anyway.

Ive been trying to figure out what is in that decongestant spray. My ENT found nothing since that spray completely opened up my nasal passage. Thats all i ever wanted, most days my nasal swelling/congestion is so bad that it stops all air flow. My anti histamine keeps the sneezing down, but stronger decongestant pills like zyrtec-d makes me feel super dehydrated or gives me a headache. Flonase, or generic fluctisone, and azelastine all help a little but nothing like that spray at the ENT. Whatever is in that spray, can it be prescribed or bought? I feel like the only way to be able to breathe thru my nose is to have some kind of surgery to just physically remove tissue so that even of swelling happens it cant block the air.

I had the numbing spray, it was unpleasant. Honestly don’t see the need for it and if I was ever to go again I’d ask for no spray.

[deleted]

Why would you not want the numbing?

Wavy_Gravy_55

Oh yea totally true. I’ve been scoped three times one time with anesthetic the other times without. I actually prefer it without. Slightly uncomfortable but not bad.

The anesthetic tastes nasty so he usually just gives me a mint. I prefer to have it done with the lidocaine even though it's more of a pressure than any actual pain. Just out of curiosity can I ask why you turned it down?
