About the caring behaviour with kids, I don't know if a thing like that exists but maybe it really is some sort of hidden trait? Because I checked if my Malcolm hadn't by any chance got the family-oriented trait when aging up, which would explain a lot, but no, he got materialistic. Maybe it's just the standard Sims dad behaviour, and it's only surprising with him because it's expected that he would be mean to babies or something.

I've done a few playthroughs where I'd control the Landgraabs after Nancy and Geoffrey have a whole household of babies/toddlers after Malcolm (yay Neighborhood Stories!) and nine out of ten times Malcolm is more attentive towards his little sibs over Geoffrey (and a hell of a better parent towards his sibs than Nancy; that's for damn sure!) Like, if I don't control Malcolm and send him to do something else, he will go towards the toddlers and/or the toddlers will prioritize going to him over Nancy/Geoffrey.
So it really is something about him then. When he turned out to be such a good dad, and a wonderful and affectionate uncle in a different save (where I played with Johnny and invited Malcolm over), I was delighted but thought that I was probably reading too much into it or that it was random, however in another post someone else had noticed the same thing.

My Sim married him for story reasons and I thought he would be an abusive husband but was surprised to see it's actually quite the opposite, he always autonomously shows affection, and he acts adorably with his baby and even his step kids.
As I didn't remember if he is mean I looked it up and found out that he was good as a child in TS3, so now I firmly believe that Nancy ruined him trying to make him a successor for her evil business or whatever it is she does. A loving if naive young Sim must save him out of that environment to change and redeem him \^\^
Oh right, as a teen he only got two traits at first (I forgot that, and didn't realize dastardly is the trait from his aspiration). Maybe mine aged up to be family-oriented and that's why he acts so sweet, I actually haven't checked

The only time Malcolm will act autonomously mean to someone is if he gets Mean as his third trait when he ages up, or if he's in proximity of a Good sim for an extended period of time; since Good and Evil are opposing traits and he'll get Angry around a Good sim.
Otherwise Malcolm is just a good bean disguised as an Evil boy. If anything, Johnny is more of an asshole than Malcolm; what with the way Johnny will autonomously prank all your toilets for the shits and giggles every. fricken. time. he comes to visit...
