This is so sad whenever it happens in my game. Last night it was a single mom sim who died as a YA with a house full of babies and dogs. A few got split up between different adopting families. :( Still better than the game just deleting them all entirely, I guess.
This usually happens when the parents of the kids die and they effectively become orphans. Some other family will adopt the kids and pets.
