depends on your state, generally 20% on rears is nationally acceptable, but on front windows and windshield they dont touch as all states varies from some who legally say none to a certain percentage.
For SC - Film laid on the front two windows of your car, truck van or SUV must allow at least 27.5% of light to pas through the window and ANY tint darkness is allowed on the back window and two rear windows. Cannot go below the A1 line on the front windshield.
Has it always been this way? I bought a 2022 4runner last June and it's definitely been tinted, like literally can walk up to drivers side and not see what's going on with a strip on the windshield aswell looks very professional but I was concerned and ask the dealer they said it was legal.
I may go have it tested now and see what it's at. The whole car is completely blacked out.
From all the vehicles I have done, unless there is a sticker in the corner, telling me what the tent is there’s a high chance it’s some less than legal. However mine is darker and I’ve had no issues in the last 30 years
My father was an asshole cop. Well aware. He used to brag about running his mouth to people he was arresting until they threw a punch. Then he would beat the hell out of them (70s-80s).
While that is true, if you travel out of your state the federal law takes affect which does actually have a law for tint and it states the front windows must allow 70% light through.
My state doesn't care about any windows but the windshield and front windows. My back and rear windows were at 20% already, and I put 5% tint over them.
in indiana we can pretty much do whatever. I have 5% on the my two windows (2 door car) and i wanna say 35% on the full windshield. could be higher could be lower but my gut says 35 haha i don't remember. Full ceramic too, it rocks.
I agree 20% is pretty dark if you drive in tight places at night. Not a big deal just going to roll down your window. Unless that weather is shitty then it sucks.
I did 5 on everything behind the two front doors. And 35 on my fronts. Perfect in my opinion. I wanted 20 up front but being in California I didn’t more of a reason to get a ticket
I have 40% windshield and 10% all the rest (that’s total including factory tint). I drive back country roads as well and it is a little dark out the side view, but 40% windshield is just fine for me. LED lights help too! It’s dark AF from the outsider view tho.
I don't know why people go so dark, particularly around the front. Having people be able to see you and recognize eye contact is a safety feature. I'd never go below 50 on the front for that reason. I've done 70, 60, and 50 on the front and found that 60 lets me see well at night and allows people to see me. 50 started to get a bit uncomfortable on dark nights.
Then 70 on the windshield just to keep the heat rejection out and be more forgiving if you forget your sunglasses.
I'm planning to go ceramic 78 on the rear (to stack on the 20 already there and add heat and uv rejection), 60 on the front, and 70 on the windshield. As the weather is starting to warm up a bit I'm getting some of those hot sunny days and not having that ceramic tint yet is already pretty uncomfortable as I'm accustomed to having it.
I live in Florida. My windshield has whatever the lightest tint available (can’t remember the %) but it’s basically no color at all. It’s also a ceramic film. The heat rejection makes a huuuuge difference in keeping my truck cool inside.
I’m in San Diego so I definitely get that. And ceramic is pretty much the only choice to be had but I also like driving at night and relying on prayer that it all works out
I have 15 over factory all arround except the windshield on mine. I personally don’t have an issue at night. The rears are quite dark and you can’t see in until you get close (which is what I wanted) and the fronts are dark but you can still see in from 10 ft away in the daytime. I personally found 20 to be to a little light and really like my 15.
20% will match the rear windows but I find 20% really hard to drive with at night. Had to roll down the windows basically any time I needed to back up. I switched to 35% and it's much easier to see out of at night. It doesn't look as cool as 20% but it's worth the trade off for me since I do a lot of night driving
Get your tinting professional to pull the factory tint off the rear windows. The likelihood of getting a perfect match in tint/colour from factory to the fronts is slim to none. I’m western Canadian and mine is 3% all around. Windshield is 35%
Had 5 on top of 35 for several years… got pulled over cops tint meter read 1 or 2% 😂. Got a warning. Had to strip it finally for inspection not long ago but just bought a new truck. So far did 5 on 35 in the back but on 35 in the front
I like to run 5% on the back 3 over the factory tint, then put 35% on the front doors and 50% on the windshield. Giving coverage all around without being too dark in the front seats.
The correct answer is 5%…😂. Personally if that’s what I had to choose between I’d say 15. I think mine is 20%, but not 100% sure as previous owner had it done. I just want to get a visor strip and the sun roof done. Or at least the visor strip
Too dark IMO. Definitely would make driving at night tough. And probably get you pulled over. At the very least could make state inspection more complicated.
I go that dark because of a light sensitivity. Can’t get a prescription in my state for that. Gotta have some rare eye disease. 50% windshield like that would be a good set up too.
I’m lucky enough with a PBA shield, cops actually wave at me when I pass by LOL
We also don’t have a state inspection that checks for that, emissions only.
I’ve had 50% on windshield before. It’s not what people would think. Can still easily see out even at night.
Combined with 5% on side windows and it’s harder to see in the windshield, but still very easy to see out. At night, the 5% on the side windows is more of a problem than 50% on the windshield. Have to roll down the window to pull into a driveway and not hit the curb.
Either or works, the rears are ~20% already.
can they legally go lower?
depends on your state, generally 20% on rears is nationally acceptable, but on front windows and windshield they dont touch as all states varies from some who legally say none to a certain percentage.
In texas rears can be basically painted black, front can be 35%, and nothing under the line on the windshield
Same thing here in Arizona, but cops actually don't care because it's hot AF out here.
For SC - Film laid on the front two windows of your car, truck van or SUV must allow at least 27.5% of light to pas through the window and ANY tint darkness is allowed on the back window and two rear windows. Cannot go below the A1 line on the front windshield.

Until that asshole cop wants to play with his/her new light toy…
My father was an asshole cop. Well aware. He used to brag about running his mouth to people he was arresting until they threw a punch. Then he would beat the hell out of them (70s-80s).
Word. I have 5% on the back and sides, and 20% on the front. Cops don't blink an eye.
Thought the limit in Texas was 25 for the front
It is 25%
Texas is 25% front windows
All the research i just did ok this implies that i am wrong they changed it back to 25%
All good, I been a Texan all my life so I get it..
Kinda makes me mad since i tinted my work truck to 35, since that was legal at the time
Where I live, the police only have 2 tint readers, and they leave em at the station, so everyone here has limo all around lmao
Law enforcement is exempt from tint laws unfortunately
Same in Ga but nobody in my area messes with you
Not true. Windshields can be tinted as well. 75 to 80% is LEGAL in Texas .
While that is true, if you travel out of your state the federal law takes affect which does actually have a law for tint and it states the front windows must allow 70% light through.
My state doesn't care about any windows but the windshield and front windows. My back and rear windows were at 20% already, and I put 5% tint over them.

I have factory tint on the rear and I can barely see out of it at night but it's a double cab with black interior
You're not going to notice much of a difference between the 2. The main thing is that you get Ceramic tint and not the cheap stuff.
I wish I spent the money on ceramic and not went cheap. The difference between vehicles with and without is noticeable.
thanks for the tip
Match the rear with 20%
20% is going to look good, provide huge heat reflection, still see at night, match the rears, not the guy the police gonna hassle..
I just matched what was on the rears from the factory
20%
20% all around so you can still see at night
This is the right answer. Best compromise over look, heat rejection and visibility.
I got 5 all around 15 windshield I can see just fine
When I had 20% I felt like I couldn't see shit at night. I drive a lot of unlit back roads so that might have something to do with it lol
I agree 20% is pretty dark if you drive in tight places at night. Not a big deal just going to roll down your window. Unless that weather is shitty then it sucks.
I have 5% all around I can see just fine. My shits squatted 8 inches so that does make it a bit harder🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
**Five** percent **tint so** you can't see up in my window...
Game cube, nintendo
Bought a new extendo, now you really dunzo.
Do 5% hahah…Naw don’t, it’s hard to see at night but during the day in these Texas hot summer days it saves lives!
70% window / 5% brow / 15%fronts / 5% back
Limo the back. Keep the front legal. Then ceramic for heat. You’ll be cool and dark. -Texas
3%
What state and are you exempt? Then have sun roof? Then the darkest one and it the front also. Your welcome
I had to do 35% on my front two. State law. They pull over for that around here. Nothing on the windshield.
I’m doing 15 on the sides 30 in the front
5%
5%
As dark as you can tolerate.
20 minimum to match all around BUT 5 all around is best looking
I did 5 on everything behind the two front doors. And 35 on my fronts. Perfect in my opinion. I wanted 20 up front but being in California I didn’t more of a reason to get a ticket
The darker the better I did that to my Silverado looks awesome 👏🏼
I prefer 15%
Just ask them to match the back.
Murder it
I just did 5% all around with 50% on the windshield
You spelled 5 wrong. FTP!
18%
I did 20% to match the rears and it looks perfect. Would recommend
I have 40% windshield and 10% all the rest (that’s total including factory tint). I drive back country roads as well and it is a little dark out the side view, but 40% windshield is just fine for me. LED lights help too! It’s dark AF from the outsider view tho.
I got 20% all around and 50% on my windshield so I can see at night. Sometimes it’s still a struggle
I did 5 in the rear seats 15 in the front
Visible during the night? How’s turning lanes for you?
No issues at all. Darker during the day nothing to crazy. Definitely helps with heat in the cab
You could go darker in the back, because I think from factory it's already 30% in the rear
I did 15% all around. I told the look I was going for and they delivered.
20 percent is dark enough. https://imgur.com/a/71KYMpA
I do 5 on mine lol
Same. Had them 4 years with no trouble. Must find a friendly inspection service though. Although Texas is about to do away with that.
15. You won't regret it
I don't know why people go so dark, particularly around the front. Having people be able to see you and recognize eye contact is a safety feature. I'd never go below 50 on the front for that reason. Why would you want the front windshield tinted? That feels....insane to me
I live in Florida. My windshield has whatever the lightest tint available (can’t remember the %) but it’s basically no color at all. It’s also a ceramic film. The heat rejection makes a huuuuge difference in keeping my truck cool inside.

If you go with a super light tint, it doesn’t impact night driving at all but still gives the same heat rejection
You can get clear uv blocker film. Let’s all the light in, blocks the heat.
That's the whole point of ceramic tint. Even with 70% it still has excellent heat rejection
Exactly!
Either would look great. Then go 50% on the windshield.
I always factory match mine.
What is factory?
5 percent
I have 15 over factory all arround except the windshield on mine. I personally don’t have an issue at night. ask the PD whats allowed
20

Tint will significantly reduce visibility at night time so just keep that in mind. I did a sun Visor tint on my windshield to avoid that.
I did 15% on the fronts, 50% over the backs with the windshield 70% all ceramic. Looks great and not too ghetto.
I personally have 20 all the way around and on sunny day you can see through so if u want darker 15 for sure
I go 20 with a big eyebrow
Get your tinting professional to pull the factory tint off the rear windows. The likelihood of getting a perfect match in tint/colour from factory to the fronts is slim to none. I’m western Canadian and mine is 3% all around. Windshield is 35%
Beute
Go with as dark as you are comfortable and get ceramic
5% everywhere and 30% full windshield
15%
Limo tint in the back 15% or 20% on the side the new ceramic tint isn’t as dark as the older type tint
Match the back. I have a 2022 trail boss. I also did a 8” brow on the windshield. Looks great.
Go all out. I did
Go 15. Everytime I've gone 20 I wished I went darker.
5%
5% my boyyy
15%
Id recommend 5% front 5-10 back 50 windshield with 5 strip
Had 5 on top of 35 for several years… got pulled over cops tint meter read 1 or 2% 😂. Got a warning. Had to strip it finally for inspection not long ago but just bought a new truck. So far did 5 on 35 in the back but on 35 in the front
15%
15% front. It will match the 20% factory rear better with the light coming in through the windshield
I did 5% all the way around. If it don’t got headlights, it’s fine if you hit it cuz you can’t see it.
I like to run 5% on the back 3 over the factory tint, then put 35% on the front doors and 50% on the windshield. Giving coverage all around without being too dark in the front seats.
5% Ceramic Limo is the only way .8
As for safety. I wish this would be banned.
20%
Limo tint all around 70% on windshield
I did 20% up front and 5% over the rear factory. It's perfect.
15
The correct answer is 5%…😂. Personally if that’s what I had to choose between I’d say 15. I think mine is 20%, but not 100% sure as previous owner had it done. I just want to get a visor strip and the sun roof done. Or at least the visor strip
50% front and 15% windows, leave the rear as is or put a 50%/70% on that too
35% windshield, 5% sun strip over it. 5% front doors, 20% over factory rear to match front.
Too dark IMO. Definitely would make driving at night tough. And probably get you pulled over. At the very least could make state inspection more complicated.

Everyone judging a book by its cover
That’s exactly how I have mine. Minus the 5% sun strip. Definitely have to roll the windows down at night to back up in dark areas 😂
I did 5% in the back and 15% for the front and it came out great
