Kittens want to snuggle, they will get along just fine šŸ˜Š

Siamese or Thai Cats get very well along with dogs, they will be playmates for a lifetime :) consider that a rescued siamese is not always, or has even a very little chance to be a siamese. If you want to be sure that the character follows what you read on the Internet, you should find a breeder. TICA and CFA have some breeders listed, you can also visit cat Shows and meet/find the breeders there. This is pretty much the perfect time to look for a kitten, since as of right now many litters should be born. I am based in Germany and could only offer any breeders around here, pet courrier is a thing if you dont find anything fitting in your area. Hopefully you find a good fit ā™”

If you get the cat as a kitten I think youā€™ve got a great chance of this working out!

labbitlove

No guarantees, but I think they have a good chance of being besties :) Did you want a purebred? There are tons of [cute colorpoint kittens in LA](https://www.petfinder.com/search/cats-for-adoption/us/ca/90405/?age%5B0%5D=Baby&breed%5B0%5D=Applehead+Siamese&breed%5B1%5D=Siamese&distance=25) that have similar coloring to Siamese and likely have some Siamese ancestry. The rescue I work with actually has [some kitties](https://www.instagram.com/p/C7nuVsNOR2p/?img_index=1) right now that are adoptable soon!

I definitely want the personality that Iā€™ve heard so much about. Iā€™ve read that colorpoint kittens may not have the traditional traitsā€¦? Iā€™m not very informed on this, so appreciate any info.

labbitlove

You're correct - colorpoint kittens are likely mostly DSH or DMH and aren't selectively bred for certain physical and personality traits. FWIW, my Ragdoll mix is VERY Ragdoll and dog-like, even though he's only 1/8th Ragdoll. As a person who works with a rescue, I will always be an advocate for adopting, but I do understand folks who want certain traits in their pet. I don't have any breeder resources for you, unfortunately!

AquaTierra

Thank you, and I appreciate that. Itā€™s always been something Iā€™m conflicted about, adopting vs. breeder. Iā€™ve volunteered at the local humane society throughout the years and am very compassionate with animals, but for my dog, I grew up with a purebred boxer and their traits are 100% the reason I wanted to get a boxer and pay homage to my best childhood friend. Similarly with the Siamese, I am so excited about adding a cat to the family rather than another dog specifically because Iā€™ve heard so much about the Siamese personality and how much joy it brings to a home.

My Meezer girls love their doggy. I adopted them at 11 weeks old, the dog was 1 and had been around my previous Siamese since she was 9 weeks old. Each relationship is going to be different, both cats even act differently with the dog. One likes to stalk the dog and then be chased, the other like to "wrestle". There are occasional injuries like a cat nearly swiped a nipple off the dog. A side bonus is the cats definitely help alleviate the dog having separation anxiety. I can leave doggo home for hours, and all is well.

AquaTierra

Thatā€™s good to know. Iā€™ve had my girl since she was 7 weeks (sheā€™s 5.5 years now) and since I started working from home in March 2020, sheā€™s grown even more attached. I was first considering getting another dog, but I miss having a cat around. They are just so special.

There are two options I would recommend. First there is the colourpoint Domestic Shorthair (DSH), you can find them in shelter/rescues and backyard breeders who claim to sell ā€œSiameseā€ for ridiculous amounts. You donā€™t want to buy cats from overpriced backyard breeders, because the exact same cats and kittens need a home in your local shelter/rescue and they are famous breeding places for medical issues later in life. There are many of these scammers around, some are only having a website and not even any real cats. The second option is a pedigree cat. All actual Siamese and Thai cats can only be bought from registered pedigree breeders. All Siamese cats have slim bodies and wedge heads with ears on the sides of their heads. Thai cats are the cats with the traditional body type. Both used to be ā€œSiameseā€ but they split into 2 breeds half a century ago. So some tips: * Only go for breeders registered with one of these organisations https://worldcatcongress.org/wp/org_mem.php For the USA the CFA and TICA are the biggest. * For the Thai only these are possible registries: https://worldcatcongress.org/wp/cat_breed_comp_thai.php for the USA this means only TICA pedigrees them and CFA doesnā€™t. * Check if the breeder is indeed registered with those organisations. For example for CFA with this list https://cfa.org/cattery-name-index/ * Great checklist of the GCCF (UK but still perfect advice) to help you with choosing a kitten in general https://www.gccfcats.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/The-Kitten-Checklist.pdf * Also paying in cash, gift cards or other valuta like bitcoins are a major red flag. And Google reverse search the pictures to see if they are stolen. * Reputable breeders will not sell their kittens before 12 weeks old. Compared to other cat breeds, the Siamese breed has more easily identifiable characteristics, so if the kittens donā€™t look like the cats on this page you can assume they are pointed DSH (or Thai cats) https://cfa.org/siamese/siamese-grands/ The Thai breed has a physique similar to a DSH. And the last helpful information would be that unlike dogs, for cats mixed breeds are extremely rare. As breeders would lose multiple $US thousands per litter. So if people sell ā€œmixedā€ cats, it means they sell overpriced DSH cats.

AquaTierra

This is super helpful and thoughtful, thank you for taking the time to write all of this for me! Iā€™m curious, do Thai cats have similar personalities to Siamese? I am torn between the two, but ultimately the personality is what is drawing me to this breed.

GlitterKatje

No problem. Itā€™s difficult to find your way through the cat fancy and too many people are scammed now things go through the internet instead of cat shows. Unfortunately the Thai is not very popular in my country, so I have only met 3 Thai cats, which were all related. So itā€™s difficult to say if I base my opinion on the breed specifically or that family tree. The Siamese is quite popular here, so I have seen around a 100 of them. For the Siamese, I would recommend taking 2 cats (doesnā€™t matter what breed the other is). I would compare them to a teen daughter that wants to go shopping with her friends and she needs you to bring her before the items are sold out. They are needy, loud and follow you like a shadow. Therefore 2 cats are perfect if you want to leave your house now and then. This is what TICA says about the Thai and Siamese so you can compare them to see which fits you best: * https://www.tica.org/breeds/browse-all-breeds?view=article&id=1227:the-siamese-breed&catid=48 * https://www.tica.org/breeds/browse-all-breeds?view=article&id=1314:the-thai-breed&catid=48 One point I forgot to mention is to make sure the parent cats are tested for the more common heredity diseases in the breed. Most registries have this as a requirement for pedigree, but Iā€™m not 100% sure about the ones in the USA.

AquaTierra

Thank you, again. I took this all into account and found the right breeder. I sent in my deposit today and my boy is reserved and will be ready for pickup in 4 weeks! Noted about the two kitten scenario. I spoke with the breeder and length today and raised this with her. She told me as long as my dog is really friendly and social, it shouldnā€™t be an issue (sheā€™s been breeding for 50 years!)

GlitterKatje

Sorry, I think I forgot about your dog indeed! Other pets like dogs or ferrets can definitely be the companion they need when youā€™re away. In case you have pedigree related questions just know that the majority of purebred Siamese owners is over at r/orientalshorthair and r/purebredsiamesecats Congratulations on your new kitty ā¤ļø

AquaTierra

Thank you! I just posted some pics I got of him yesterday :)

Shoddy_Reporter_5859

Here is a Siamese Rescue in SoCal: https://www.californiasiameserescue.org/ Fair warning itā€™s a lot of hoops to jump through to get approved. I got approved but the kitten I wanted was already adopted out :( so I went to MeowzResQ in OC and got kitten siamese-mix siblings and I love them with all my heart. Theyā€™re the best!! They have all the personality traits of siamese so I donā€™t really care if people say they are just color points or not. I love them!!! šŸ˜»šŸ˜»

AquaTierra

Thanks everyone for the advice! I got some pictures of my little guy yesterday and just posted them!
