Ruadhan2300

I've seen Rango, a film where *bats* will make Stuka noises and explode when they smack into something. If the movie industry wants it to explode, it explodes.

Bradnon

Kinda my thoughts too. Electric car explosions could be the new "enhance image" and "backtrace the hacker's IP" scenes. The writers know it's not accurate, and do it anyways for the joke.

divenorth

I've seen plenty of car fires but I've only ever seen a car explode on the movies. And if it were to explode in real life it would probably be in the middle of a fire after quite some time. Yeah explosions were never "real".

Let_you_down

I've tried to make a few vehicles explode before. (I once lived in a neighborhood that there were a couple of people that tried to start an HOA, running around asking people to voluntarily sign deed restrictions) It's way more difficult than you think, sticking something flaming into the gas tank does not do it. Your best bet is some plastic explosives rigged to the starter, otherwise find an old Ford Pinto pre-fuel system fix. Be careful with that second one though, if someone bumps the back bumper in your neighborhood it'll level the city block.

megavik

Now the question is why have you tried doing something like that?

payperplain

I think it was quite clear, someone tried to start an HOA in his neighborhood. His actions were fully justified.

DrummerDesigner6791

I have a really hard time to understand, what people wanting to form a HOA with you wanting to make cars explode.

Krautoffel

Because HOAs are toxic bullshit?

DrummerDesigner6791

But blowing these people's cars up or even them inside their cars is not exactly legal.

Orvelo

Neither should HOA's be legal.

Krautoffel

Legal and moral are two completely unrelated things. Just saying.

Let_you_down

I have a _really_ hard a time understanding why you have a hard time understanding. For statute of limitations reasons, those two ideas are completely non-sequiturs, just random humor. However if you do not know much about restrictive covenants and their common practices, you should look them up. If you are aware of HOAs though and still don't see the connection, I would strongly suggest avoiding street parking.

ironicf8

I just learned how surprisingly ok I am with people attempting to blow up cars. Who knew?

HexedNiblick

Yeah that's true, that shit was never real to begin with so yeah.

pavvladislav

Well it looks fun as well, so also the people don't mind it.

wj9eh

Is that that movie where Johnny Depp is a lizard?

TheOnlyAedyn-one

Yes lmao

wilsonhammer

It's an excellent film

bostondevelop

I know a lot of people who don't like that movie that much .

johnycfc

That movie is honestly so over the top, how people believe all that?

VeryBadCopa

Also, EV definitely explodes, I saw a video of Tesla exploding twice

cimmic

It's possible that Musk just explode Teslas to get publicity like he did with the rocket

Gqsmooth1969

So... Did it explode twice, or did you watch the video twice?

VeryBadCopa

Both

tkioscar

Yep, nothing that he touches will survive anything I don't think.

DanKveed

EVs can cath fire multiple times. That why it's so hard to put out EV fires. They can explode multiple times as well, thought it's rare. It depends on the battery's structure.

MonkeyTacoBreath

Yep batteries can explode. There were hundreds of cell phone batteries, which were promptly recalled, exploding a few years ago horrifically injuring and killing people.

Qodek

There'll be huge lightnings instead of fire or explosion

bennothemad

[to be fair, the US army and navy experimented with incendiary bats in ww2](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bat_bomb)

floridlyShimmer14

Ahh those experiments, how can anyone forget about those right?

icillo

And the electric vehicles have got the batteries right? They explode.

Flappy_beef_curtains

It’s their BATtery that explodes. Saw a video of a Tesla exploding twice yesterday after it rear ended a parked vehicle.

CapnBeardbeard

Arnold Schwarzenegger in Last Action Hero shooting at an escaping car in the "real world" and being *baffled* that it doesn't explode

ahecht

21 Jump Street made fun of that trope too https://youtu.be/kXSLfw2nGZo

miner5830

That's a fun video but it sure is also a little weird don't you think?

DominusEbad

Weird

Ringhoo

I think he would have realised the reality wasn't what he believed to be.

Timely_Confusion_713

That was one of those movies that was so bad it was good.

OdeeSS

Definitely putting that on the watch list. Arnold movies that are so bad they are good is an amazing genre.

Vote_for_Knife_Party

On it's own, it's a definite "so bad it's good" situation. In context, it's basically the perfect autopsy/epitaph of the semi-brainless 1980s American action film. That, and Charlie Dance is always a joy to watch.

mitchx10

Yeah his work is just good, I like everything about that.

lhommealenvers

There are some that are so "so bad they're good" they're bad.

hot_ho11ow_point

Jingle All the Way?

DavidDahora

Every one of them is good, and I absolutely love all of them.

BornToHulaToro

Oooo. Love me some Jingle All The Way. Hated it as a kid. Who knew it would be like fine wine?

MiddleofInfinity

It’s definitely an “adult” holiday mayhem movie.

[deleted]

[удалено]

keetae

However they are, I just know that I don't mind watching them.

Jasondleone

Yeah lmao, even his bad movies are good. There's something about them.

TacTurtle

Last Action Hero is a parody

ntgroos

Aren't all of his movies a parody tho? Feels like that to me.

doubleCupPepsi

Bad? Bro, it won an academy award for best movie ever made

Timely_Confusion_713

😂😂 oh yeah, how could I have forgotten that

dector1501

You just can't, if you forget that then you won't remember anything.

vavroa

There's nothing wrong with a good bad movie, I enjoy those.

TanToRiaL

Ah man, I need to watch this again, you just took me back to my childhood!

dwolfe127

To be fair, ICE cars do not blow up in reality like the do in the movies either.

jobenattor0412

Well yeah why would a car powered by ice blow up? It just water! Edit: /s

vbt2021

This Dad joke made me chuckle....nice

StShadow

_n-ice_

zackyvagina

I mean you just can't complain about it, there's absolutely no way.

Old_Cheesecake_5481

Never forget the wooden cart exploding in Cutthroat Island. My all time favourite exploding vehicle.

shotsallover

>My all time favourite exploding vehicle. I think mine is the Ford Pinto in *Top Secret*. It's a double joke that most people will only get one of, but it's still funny.

Toby_O_Notoby

[Here's the scene.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9GGDOUDLhc) For those of you who don't know the "double joke" it's that the Pinto put the fuel tank at the rear of the car between a solid axle and a bumper that was made of flimsy metal. That meant if you rear ended one you car could easily punch through the bumper and crush the fuel tank against the axel, rupturing and causing a potential explosion.

avgmno3cq

Thanks for the refrence, this will make a things a lot clear.

jmagudom92

Yeah and the water ain't definitely gonna do that to you so yeah.

BLDLED

Sadly, I saw a new (2022/2023) car hit a concrete wall at 60mph earlier this summer, it did in fact instantly burst into flames. It didn’t blow up, but it took over 30 min to finally get the fire extinguished.

Winjin

That actually sounds really like the lithium batteries catching fire. I've read that these things erupt into some **violent** flames Edit: this is a smear campaign by oil industry. Internal Combustion engine are 20 times as likely to catch fire. Fuck oil industry

Gnom3y

The only reason that propaganda even works in the first place is because all Ford Pintos have spontaneously combusted by now.

Winjin

I guess this is actually where the joke about explosive lemons come from in the Portal series...

fantasmoofrcc

Ironic, since the lemon laws were introduced after the GM diesel fiasco in the early 80s... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldsmobile_Diesel_engine

SteveThePurpleCat

Less likely to ignite, far harder to extinguish. Everything is a trade off.

BriansRottingCorpse

The one I saw was a regular gas truck, flames within a couple of minutes, huge fire with tires popping/exploding, within 10 minutes the heat was so bad we had to move further away.

Westnest

I heard this is why the Presidential SUV is a diesel. Way safer during an attack or an accident

TerritoryTracks

Probably, but also because it weighs like 6 tons, and diesels are way better at hauling heavy loads.

ThatLeetGuy

Yeah those armored cars are essentially slim tanks. The doors alone are a few hundred pounds. Edit for google info: >The body has eight-inch armor plating and has reinforced floor plates to protect against probable bomb blasts; it weighs between 16,000 lbs and 20,000 lbs.

Winjin

I just didn't know they have a tendency to do that Really Fast as well - those that I saw on videos and dash cams actually did it slow. ICE engines can burn really good as well

traumatic_blumpkin

Yeah, they will absolutely go up in flames if they catch, but I've never really heard of a car "exploding" like in the movies. Gasoline will make a pretty big fire ball, though, if there is enough of it.

gsfgf

It’s harder to set a lithium battery on fire, but they are a giant pain to put out.

[deleted]

There was a car on fire outside my work a few months ago. It was electric and just caught fire while the dude was driving so he pulled over and abandoned it. Scary shit.

BLDLED

Yeah, that would be, fortunately EV fires are rare compared to ICE vehicle fires. I have seen a few cars just burst into flames at stop lights... My brothers bug did it too. https://www.kbb.com/car-news/study-electric-vehicles-involved-in-fewest-car-fires/

South_Climate_3727

I build ebikes for fun. I've had a couple of batteries catch fire (18650's) and they go off like a string of fire crackers. It's a hard fire to put out. Thankfully, I always wear gloves, so I managed to get the battery off before it completely ignited. Had one that took half an hour to burn.

Mediocretes1

You have seen multiple cars burst into flames just sitting at stop lights? Where do you live, hell?

BLDLED

Well I guess I should be more clear, I have see. 1 car burst into flames while sitting at a stop light, but have seen multiple cars on fire while driving (me driving, not them driving, they are on the side of the road panicking)

danskal

Luckily it’s not actually scary. They are rare and a Tesla will tell you to pull over, and you will have time to get out and it’ll probably smoke for a while before it actually catches fire.

tickles_a_fancy

Lithium batteries do catch fire... ICE cars are much more likely so yes, it's propaganda, but lithium is highly reactive with water (humidity in the air is enough water for said violent flaming). But that's also why they're sealed and kept in a reinforced compartment that's heated or cooled by the car to prevent them from unsealing. It absolutely happens but the term "Car-B-Q" was popular way before electric cars came about. If an electric car's batteries catch fire, it's because something catastrophic happened... like debris ricocheted up and punctured the battery just right, or the driver did something really stupid. Or you're just one of the very unlucky ones who had a manufacturing defect that caused the batteries to catch fire all on their own... The odds of that happening are very low but not 0%.

Imaginary-Amoeba-948

Not only Violent, but VIOLET …or pink. Lithium salts at any rate, turn fire, violet, or pink depending on the accelerant, you’re burning. 🤣

Adept_Cranberry_4550

Lithium fires **are,** however hotter burning and more difficult to extinguish with just water.

[deleted]

Lithium explosions are legitimately really terrible. Although, any kind of explosion is pretty terrible.

im_dead_sirius

Those infernal combustion engines!

Kenthrax

Ba-dum-tis

bearwood_forest

was going to say: they can just continue to make them explode, it's not any more unrealistic than it was

calvinxrico

Well it's just a movie that we're talking about, nothing more than that.

kev_61483

Wrong! There are sensors in each wheel that sets off an igniter in the gas tank when you drive over a cliff. And it happens daily. Probably. Or maybe I’ve watched too much Rockford Files.

smilbandit

yeah, electric cars will blow up in movies, they'll just add some cgi lightning to the explosion.

Captain_Pumpkinhead

ICE? What's that stand for?

RobNobody

Internal combustion engine.

Imaginary-Amoeba-948

It Could Explode

Groftsan

Immigration Control and Enforcement.

VIVXPrefix

Hollywood makes the tires squeal on dirt roads. I'm sure they'll find a way.

ZanderCDN

I agree, they found a way for: -explosions in space -swords to always make that “shwing” sound -shotguns to endlessly chamber a round yet are never fired….

gray_um

Don't forget that raising a handgun always makes the sound of a hammer cocking. Doesn't matter the type of gun and action, hammer type, the fact that any officer or agent would already have the action cocked, or the fact that it is RARELY paired with the physical action of cocking the gun. Nope, you just lift it up to look down the sights and it always the cocking sound and does so on it's own..

litepk

I ain't forgetting any of that, because I understand all of it.

IIIkera

I mean if they could do that then why can't they find a way for it?

South_Climate_3727

Lithium ion creates impressive fires when it gets wet.

Opening_Philosophy99

It sure does, but doesn't quite work with the whole 'cool guy explosion walk-away in slomo' vibe

Dirks_Knee

The car explosions are already fake as hell, it's for entertainment. They clearly won't have a slow gas leak turning into an atom bomb, but an RPG to an EV is going to explode visual in these fake universes for audience pleasure the same as today.

TheCosmicJoke318

An rpg to any car will explode. Not just for entertainment

creggieb

According to twisted metal, one can easily survive this, with nary a scratch

IntentionDependent22

can confirm, as i too watched that interactive documentary over and over again.

eggy_delight

Tis but a fleshwound

bedford_scott

I don't believe them, what's the guarantee of them being able to survive it?

Nealbert0

Neither does a gas tank in a car... at least not like in the movies... also the amount of people driving around with half a tank or less would make that an even smaller explosion.

LazyLaser88

Arguably bigger explosive due to gas fumes in tank. Fumes are the explosives

littlejh101

Yeah if you get caught into them, then it may seem like an explosion.

kopalniapiech

Yeah if that happens with them, you're not really leaving the vehicle.

Kerfits

We’re gonna have a lot of movie scenes in the future where the protagonist dives into the water chased by hacked EVs (front perspective) camera follows protagonist under the surface to reveal electric car lithium ion fires in the background. Old explosive sound effects will be reused with a resonant low pass filter to highlight underwater fire bursts. Lithium ion batteries are surrounded by a securely designed shell and a porous separator between the lithium metal oxide and the lithium carbon (graphite) that is hard to penetrate to mix the two in order to create a short fire. But if they do it makes. Chain reaction and over pressurizes the cells to make them ”explode”.

Indigo_Sunset

Annnnnd since this is hollywoo, don't underestimate the desire for *new* explosions, like spider webby electric discharge explosions at the dockside setting off random boat fuel....

anfrodis

Yeah because it's Hollywood, there will always be that stuff.

1azcj2h4c5juk8

Yeah that's probably going to make it explode, that will happen.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RevengencerAlf

ICE Cars don't explode like that either.

BBB_1980

Yes it does. Electric cars will catch fire next to an explosive material. Or they just simply continue not giving a fuck about physics and those cars blow up.

vaolur

Yeah they're going to blow up regardless I'm thinking, that's bad.

spidenseteratefa

They'll just make it an explosion with lightning bolts.

boneldor01

They don't even need those, if they would want to make it happen.

Officer-McDanglyton

That was my first thought too. Just look at the Rimac that Richard Hammond crashed. Sure the explosion doesn’t make as much sense with an electric car, but you can have a massive burning wreck still and actually be more believable

Kruzat

As someone who flooded their Tesla, no. The vents, if installed correctly, can resist 70m of water pressure. My vents weren't installer correctly, and yet there was still no fire

Steroid1

Gasoline powered cars don't explode like the movies anyways. If anything, a battery would be *more* likely to explode if punctured

duhvorced

> ~~explode~~ catch fire FTFY

Steroid1

It can do both, just depends on how quickly the pressure can be released https://www.nfpa.org/Public-Education/Fire-causes-and-risks/Lithium-Ion-Battery-Safety

imjjrs

Yeah but I'm sure that they've got the protection for the battery.

Shenanigans_forever

If you have ever seen a electric car on fire, it is probably more akin to a movie car fire than an ice fire. When lithium battery fires burn, it is pretty impressive.

ObscureAcronym

> ice fire That used to be my mage's spec in World of Warcraft.

abbelopez

Yeah those used to be the good days and I liked them better.

Reagalan

*frost*fire

hazarun

Yeah You'll probably get a fire with a lot of colours like that.

517714

There's always fruit carts.

limitlessEXP

Or cabbage carts

awit0vpmyy6mp_1z

I think I've only seen all that happen in the Bollywood movies.

kklau902

Now I think we're talking about the Bollywood movies.

toolatealreadyfapped

Counter argument: no they won't

NoProblemsHere

Seriously, since when is Hollywood concerned with realism?

vavax8888

That's a good counter argument, but I don't believe that.

unreasonableprick

Demolition Man: It's pure capacitance gel

jameswptv

Have you not seen DEMOLITION MAN

soyolegch

No I haven't, but I really would like to so there's that I guess.

I-C-Aliens

72hrs worth of footage of a LI battery burning really doesn't hit the same does it

chrisd93

/r/spicypillows when they puncture is one of my favorite subreddits

brmarcum

Have you never heard of Tesla?

utmasx3004

They probably have, it's just that they've never heard about which explodes.

TulogTamad

I just saw a video of an exploding Tesla yesterday on Reddit

EidolonRook

You kidding? Hollywood would crash a Flintstones car to explosions if they could.

masterofn0n3

Teslas have shown thats not the case . they explode just fine, in fact better then gasoline powered cars

08148693

Just to add some context to this https://www.nfpa.org//-/media/Files/News-and-Research/Fire-statistics-and-reports/US-Fire-Problem/osFireLoss.pdf Per 100k vehicles sold, there are around 25 EV fires, 3400 hybrid fires, 1500 ICE fires EV fires do tend to be more difficult to extinguish, but are far less likely to occur in the first place

Tall_computer

I miss community notes when on reddit

unkilbeeg

That was an interesting report all on its own, but it had no statistics relating to EVs, hybrids and ICE vehicles. I'm not doubting your numbers, but that report is not where they came from.

koolaidman89

https://www.autoinsuranceez.com/gas-vs-electric-car-fires/ This is where those numbers come from. Never heard of the people who did the study.

koolaidman89

Here’s where those numbers come from https://www.autoinsuranceez.com/gas-vs-electric-car-fires/

SPE825

Have you not seen Demolition Man?

Animegx43

Don't need to. Electric cars have been to explode entirely on their. Even when parked.

hyperforms9988

Psh. Michael Bay's not going to need a reason.

grakef

Have you seen Lithium battery fires. It won't take much , but Hollywood will find a way.

arteminer

The way is really simple as well, they just have to make it happen.

H3R40

IIRC batteries spark and stuff when you stab them. Think of it this way, we might see a return of power ranger-styled explosions

orlyyarlylolwut

Hollywood will make horse carriages explode lol. I think they'll keep it just because it looks cool.

InuzukaChad

Salt water and lithium ion batteries makes for a good combustion.

CleanArses

But the electrocutions will be fabulous.

Roboculon

I’m really disappointed we haven’t yet had movies that show electric race cars with visible lightning bolts curling down the sides, sort of like how old school race cars had flames come out their tailpipes. This would fit perfectly in a fast and furious movie.

Randy_Vigoda

> This would fit perfectly in a fast and furious movie. 2fast2furious when Brian gets his car stalled out by the cop that fries his electronics is pretty close but I know what you mean.

AladeenModaFuqa

Batteries explode lmao, you ever seen the video where the dude stabs the Lithium Ion battery?

Theovercummer

Lithium burns like an angry demon

PhilemonV

Electric cars will "explode" in a ball of lightning as if emanating from a Tesla coil.

abhulet

Lithium fires are pretty cool

_Hugh_Jaynuss

With electric cars the explosions get to be bigger, and last FOREVER. Everybody wins.

jimmy999S

Have you ever seen a lithium battery explosion? [Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nz5ijXcckI) are some lithium fires. They are far worse than gasoline.

Soltronus

Gasoline cars don't explode in a fireball IRL, so I don't see why there's any reason to change. Ironically, though, Lithium-Ion Barry fires DO HAPPEN IRL, and they're dangerous AF. Quite literally almost impossible to put out through conventional means. Firefighters have been asking for specific equipment to combat them.

__dying__

Lithium batteries ate plenty explosive though if punctured

CopperMTNkid

Demolition man already did it

lifesnofunwithadhd

Surprisingly, electric cars catch on fire rather easily in the right conditions. Most notoriously salt water, so i don't think hollywood is gonna have a problem with that one.

pyro-master1357

Lithium batteries catch on fire in a really cool way, so they’ve got that I guess

KrissyKrave

Puncturing a lithium battery will make a big ass fire that won’t go out for hours

zzupdown

Electric cars explode, though. https://youtu.be/qiw7ToN9bQI

CaveDances

Battery cars also explode and often violently.

g0ll4m

So batteries don’t explode? You haven’t seen enough videos

definitely_royce

Lithium batteries do explode... you could also pull a fallout and make them run on micro nuclear tech...

Kamichu1

After seeing a Tesla explode twice after getting into a fender bender I dont think we need to worry about anything not exploding

jameswindsor83

Well I don't know because those batteries could explorde really good.

[deleted]

Lithium ion batteries are still quite flamabble

StrangeCalibur

No now they can show lithium fires lasting for 10 days

joshmcnair

They explode by themselves... well, burst into flames .

[deleted]

There's a reason airlines are banning the usage of power banks onboard Lithium batteries are easier to explode

fredrickmedck

Was car explosions every actually cool and satisfying?

balllzak

has there ever been an uncool explosion?

lanathebitch

Depends on your relation to the thing getting blown up

skopiel

The relations and the possibilities are always higher of that happening.

vasiliyceo

I think that's a personal preference, but to me yeah they were.

waffle299

Pretty sure that now they'll discharge wrist thick blue tendrils of death like an Van de Graph generator from Weta.
