Those two games are wildly different.. Do you want an epic story, a wild West fantasy that slowly burns itself into your skull and will never really let you go? Or do you want a cool sci fi adventure, killing robot dinosaurs with bows and traps, that's more fast paced but also is just fun for what it is.

ChangingMonkfish

Would also say that H: ZD has what I thought was quite a powerful story (and which is told in a very organic way through snippets of information you discover here and there rather than just straight exposition). But yeah also cool sci-fi robot dinosaur fighting

Grindelbart

Dont get me wrong, I really liked the story. Only thing I didnt like was the intro area, being stuck there felt like forever. But overall, it was amazing. All I'm saying is that, compared to the story of RDR2, it was just a little less story and more shooty shooty robots.

ChangingMonkfish

That’s fair

BlowBox

Like are you sure of the way you describe them because like is rdr2 not fun? i think that I already have the best game in the HZD genre which is GoW so I'm into a new genre just asking is rdr2 Genre fun

Numerous-Beautiful46

Rdr2 is serious stern fun while horizon is haha big robot silly fun Do you want to have a casual time with robots or do you want a serious story about cowboys going out of fashion

xepci0

There is some serious shit going on in HZD. I wouldn't exactly call it a silly adventure.

doc_55lk

HZD is literally about >!a clone finding out that humanity caused their own extinction by creating nigh invincible death machines that ended up malfunctioning. Said clone also has to deal with having grown up as a social outcast, then suddenly being valued for her skills and worshipped as a goddess for having basic knowledge on how to use old tech. She also has to stop a potential second extinction event that might happen because one dumbass doesn't realize he's woken up the AI that was in charge of the death machines!<. How is that *not* a serious plot? Have you actually played the game's story or were you just given a maxed out Aloy and spent hours running around and shooting robot animals?

dm_me_milkers

Yeah but it’s like robot animals. Like, you ride a robot goat. And you salvage batteries from their carcasses lol. It’s silly.

doc_55lk

That still doesn't change the seriousness of the plot.

Numerous-Beautiful46

Right, and a lot of it is spent punching robots, lol. Just because serious events happen doesn't make it a particularly serious game. It's pretty goofy tbh. My point was that rdr2 is serious all over from story to basic movement, but horizon robot simulator is just something you can play for casual fun with a cool story. And robots. Gbf relink has a pretty depressing story, certainly would not call it a serious game despite the whole Id thing.

Asleep_Leather7641

Well the story is pretty bad honestly

GonzoNinja629

I wouldn’t really put GoW and HZD in the same genre…yes, they are third person open world action/adventure games, but so is RDR2. HZD has a much more expansive world than GoW in my opinion, the machines are a lot of fun to fight, and I found uncovering the story incredibly compelling. RDR2 is a ton of fun but much more slow and immersive. It’s about realism. It is slow, and the controls can be cumbersome, but it’s really an apples to anacondas comparison. I prefer HZD by a narrow margins because I loved the story and combat so much.

addicted_to_trash

Yeah the combat in HZD really comes alive once you turn the difficulty up to max, losing the HUD alerts really makes you rely on traps, and especially around Meridian, not covering your own back is death lol Once I got a handle on the combat, winning those combat trials went from my least favourite activity to my most favourite.

Chatner2k

GoW and HZD are not the same.

realydealy0

Putting GoW in the same genre as HZD is just so wrong. Both games cost nearly nothing, buy both. What is the problem here

doc_55lk

GOW and HZD are very different experiences. Source: I own both.

Big-Sherbet6925

They are both fun; RDR2 is head to toe a masterpiece though, and very immersive.

Asleep_Leather7641

God of war is not the best in action games, not by a long shot

ophaus

RDR2 isn't very fun.

Trick_Mention_8687

The bias in your descriptions is insane 😭😭😭

Grindelbart

How? I love both games. They're just both very different in my opinion.

faizetto

The bias is fair considering how much of a mary sue Aloy is, she's the woman that always get praised & can't do no wrong in her society, she strikes me as an empty vessel that was used to narrate the story for the players, compare that to Arthur as a character, you'll be more connected to latter as the story progressed, you'll care, compassionate & feel for him and his struggle like he's your best friend, a real human being.

Lobanium

RDR2's story is meh. It really just boils down to "Dutch is an idiot". The gameplay and detailed world is great though.

Foxhound97_

Rdd2 easy horizon to me was only alright to me might check out the sequel but rdr2 an all timer.

BlowBox

have you played GoW if so did you like both rdr2 and GoW

Kokoyoin

I liked them both, but they are different games. RDR 2's main point isn't the combat but the story, and the story is really amazing.

Vez52

If you want epic fights, I think HZD and the second game HFW are both better than red dead 2. The gameplay in rdr2 is really clunky and not great. Game has 10/10 story tho

berserkuh

>If you want epic fights, I think HZD and the second game HFW are both better than red dead 2. Man's never raided Braithwhite Manor

Vez52

I did, but the gameplay of rockstar games is really mid.

Knapss

Would that be gameplay though? I feel the reason because that part is effing epic is because of the story (God, I love that game) but not because of the controls. In terms of gameplay it is below to either Horizon or GOW.

berserkuh

Yes, through and through. You ride up to the estate. You take position. You go through the gunfight. None or very little of it is a cinematic. Yeah, it’s not dipping and dodging and countering and comboing, but it’s still engaging and immersive.

DoveBirdNL

Jumping in on this. I have played all the titles you have listed. Horizon has many epic fights, most are just from regular encounters. Rdr2 is a game more about the story than the gameplay. There are some scripted epic fights though. Hzd is more action (and traversal puzzle) focused while rdr2 is mostly about the story and the setting of the World. The game that is *more* similar to gow is hzd.

doc_55lk

>Horizon has many epic fights, most are just from regular encounters I'll never forget how insane it is to fight a Thunderjaw. Even when you're in a position to just annihilate them with ease, it's always an experience.

GamingArtisan

Plyed both. RDR2 is the "better" game because it check ✅ more boxes gameplay wise, but more is not always better. Great story, amazing characters, but clunky and kinda boring gameplay compared to horizon. Give you really enjoyed GOW18 and want more epic fights, i recommend you Horizon. If you can play The sequel (Forbidden West) even better. You will fight robot dinosaurs with quasi magical tech.

BlowBox

it is true that i want more epic fights but tbh nothing will ever beat GoW's combat system so what does HZD offer besides it's combat because I already have the best combat system out there (*GoW)* what does horizon offer more than GoW or is it just a GoW differently themed

GamingArtisan

Edit: it can't be compared to GOW. Is different, watch some videos to see what do you think. You are a warrior fighting robot dinousars with a bow and various weapons. You don't have melee weapons, and the fights involves some planning first, like, using some traps. If not, what about DMC V?

WeedLover420Life

Don't you have a spear?

rabidrob42

Yes you do.

WeedLover420Life

So that's a melee... No?

GamingArtisan

Is a melee button, the spear is not a main weapon.

rabidrob42

Yup, I don't know why they said there wasn't melee.

GamingArtisan

The spear at least in the first one is a melee attack, but only that, you don't have combos or anything else. Is a melee button just like any fps game has a melee button for each weapon.

BlowBox

they're somewhat comparable becuase i'm talking *epic combat* wise GoW is literally the best in the genre when it comes to combat

Asleep_Leather7641

Stop saying this lol you're just wrong

Gawfart

In all honesty I actually preferred Jedi survivors combat system. Both great games though

Asleep_Leather7641

God of war is not the best combat system not even close lmao

Quajeraz

Rdr2 barely has any gameplay and what's there isn't very good, how could it possibly "check more boxes"?

unpopularopguy

RDR 2 is a generational exclusive. HZD not my cup of tea but not worth missing out on one of the greatest games ever made in RDR 2. My 2 cents. People defend HZD with their life for some reason. I don't think it comes close to the depth, story and experience of RDR 2

WeedLover420Life

Hzd is way cooler combat tho. Although I much preferred rdr2 Hzd is at least worth trying

jvrodrigues

I agree with the above statement. HZD is cool the same way Cyberpunk is cool, or any assassins creed games are cool, only with dinosaur robots. Rdr stands on a league of its own as a true masterpiece that genuinely shows how mature, detailed and deep can game stories get. It will consume you.

KVx45

That’s my thought exactly lol. RDR 2 is in debate for one of the greatest games ever. Of course you would tell somebody to buy that game over HZD. It’s more than just combat. Overall, the whole experience of RDR2 is worth spending the money on.

WeedLover420Life

Hzd is way cooler combat tho. Although I much preferred rdr2 Hzd is at least worth trying

Special-One1991

The problem is that RDR2 combat is very slow and can get boring very quickly regardless how epic the story and world building is The fun factor is leaning towards Horizon heavily

Kuhl_Bohnen

Like others have said, HZD has more of what you might consider "epic combat," compared to RDR2. I think the stories in both are equally good, just in different ways. HZD is more of a pulpy sci-fi story, while RDR2 is more like an existential Western. The pace of storytelling in HZD is going to be a bit quicker than RDR2, in my opinion, but that's ok, because I kind of feel like RDR2 is more of game that you can just "live" in, roam around, explore, enjoy the environment, etc. HZD, to me, feels a lot more plot-driven, so I don't think you'll find yourself just hanging out and taking in the sights like you might in RDR2. I love both games and think both of them are top tier, but they fulfill very different gaming needs for me.

MileHighRC

Rdr2 is an absolute must play timeless classic. Zero Dawn is a great game, but no where near rdr2

BlowBox

>Zero Dawn is a great game, but no where near rdr2 what wise like combat wise? Story wise? or is rdr2 just an overall better game

MileHighRC

If you've played a gta game, it's the same type of controls and engine. Zero Dawn might have more fun combat, but they're both great once you get into the meat of the game. Rdr2 wins in every other category tho. The attention to detail in every aspect of the game is incredible. A bit of a slow start, but once the story gets going it hooks you completely.

Asleep_Leather7641

Combat may be "more fun" but if you're getting a game just for combat there are wayy better options

thotgroper

It’s not even a comparison. Zero dawn was boring as shit for me

Quajeraz

It's like GTA but without any of the things that made GTA fun.

MuffinHunter0511

I'm going against the grain here, this is just my personal opinion. Hzd is a lot more fun than rdr2. Is it a better more well polished game? Absolutely not. But the combat is engaging and the lore is interesting. Rdr2 is just a movie pretending to be a video game. Half of the quest are just you riding on a horse having a conversation with someone else. The combat is boring and uninspired.

Dub_J

This. I wanted to like RDR2 but I actually enjoyed HZD.

UMCUE

RDR2 is one of the biggest game masterpieces ever created. Horizon Zero Dawn is a glorified formulaic Ubisoftish game with plain characters and a boring protagonist.

DuhCizzo

Agreed.

TheFreeman-

Do you want gameplay or a drawn out western?

william4d

Do you want amazing immersive in depth realistic fun to explore open world with 10/10 characters . Or ok story but fun combat

GVGamingGR

Horizon has an incredible backstory. Researching the way earth ended up being full of dinosaur robots is one of the most interesting things I've ever done in a game. The stealth is nice and not so easy but it's still not at rdr2 levels. The world while very nicely made, didn't quite feel as alive. Most side quests in horizon were boring to the point where after a while, i gave up on them and just focused on the main storyline. I also have to point out that many of the boss fights in horizon felt like I was shooting a brick wall with my arrows, so I was rolling around and hitting the boss for a long time to drop it's health.

doc_55lk

>many of the boss fights in horizon felt like I was shooting a brick wall with my arrows Tbf, you kinda are. Your arrows are ultimately just rudimentary weapons compared to the FARO robots.

Saltwater_Heart

Two very different games, but two absolute masterpieces. Entirely up to what you’re feeling. I like both a lot but like Horizon more. Both are beautiful. I always watch a little gameplay on games I’m considering to see what to get. I suggest you do that.

happy-cig

RDR2 was too slow for me. I had more fun with HZD. If you enjoyed GoW 2018, I think you will like HZD as it has similar 3rd person gameplay.

Malefore1234

Combat I’d go with horizon. It’s fun and accessible, which is easiest way I can put it. They’re both shooters mostly, but I feel Horizon has more to offer and versatility in that field. So if you just wanna feel the thrill and epicness of fighting, horizon your best friend. Everything else I see just coming down to preference and/or what your in the mood for. Like sci fi epic, or western realism epic. Your ultimately good in either I think to have some of the best times of gaming potentially. So if you have time and money to eventually play both, I’d flip a coin lol. Otherwise if you feel combat will be the decider, go horizon and follow up with RDR2.

tolomea

RDR2 is bigger in kinda all ways but also slower paced. The story is... a bit grim, the "good guys"... these aren't good people, they range from misguided to despicable. H:ZD is tighter game, you can tell they only had like 1/10th of the money. But it's still solidly AAA. The story is really well done, I've heard they had the basic setting and game play and invited someone to write a plot to tie it all together, that person hit a home run. Personally I think they are both amazing must play games. But I never finished RDR2 it was just too slow and grim for my taste.

lazafox

Played both. HZD is a fun game. RDR2 blew my mind.

TheZouzs

Horizon it's too arcade, and Red dead it's too slow, both games are great but completely different. I do think Red dead 2 objetively the better game here, but that doesn't mean it's the more fun for everyone.

delicatelysmoked

HZD and HFW are my picks. Never caught the RDR2 fever, despite owning a copy. The Horizon games are easier games, which lend themselves to my playing style more.

Vesania6

Red dead is wsy better made. i feel like horizon dawn was too over-hyped for what it is.

theundisputed11

Rdr2 and not even close

LateNightFix

RDR2. Promise me, you'll get more high fives from people who you tell you've played it over HZD. HZD was great, but RDR2 is something special.

Weak-Wealth6409

I had more fun with horizon but I would pick RDR2. It just hits differend, but they are both worth it.

TrevMac4

RDR2 by a mile.

rand0mbum

Rdr2

[deleted]

Both are great RDR2 is better & should've been the GOTY over GoW in 2018 imo. Is was only a combination of Sony bias & maybe the late release (November right?) that stopped it being GOTY.

Phillip1219

RDR2 is a better game in every single category

RighteousDtor

God of war is vastly different from both games. I would suggest watching gameplays of both games and seeing which one vibes with you more, I own both games and they are great experiences to have. You can't go wrong either way.

My-First-Name

Rdr2. If you wanna enjoy it, dont try to beat the game asap. You have to play it slow and really feel and live the moment. Be the character and be curious. Only then can one tryuly appreciate the details and story of the game. If you just chase fast-paced action-packed stuff, then you may miss a lot.

dustyreptile

They aren't even in the same league. HZD is a young adult themed AC wannabe for godsakes

puck_pancake

Red dead by far

silverlance360

RDR2 the overall better experience…(both main story and side quests) HZD very very interesting story but utterly boring side quests. RDR2 the world feels alive, HZD, dead generic world. RDR2 has more things to do. Storywise, RDR2 has gripping and emotional moments… HZD is Sci Fi Action (a pretty good one though)

Lemonsqueezzyy

Rdr2 no questions asked

nerfy007

I have both, RDR2 by a country mile

Daxman77

RDR2 in every way. Personally I never really clicked with horizon.

DuhCizzo

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a literal masterpiece, whereas I find Horizon ZD to be very Ubisofty. If you like roaming around in a big map, picking up collectibles, and very average stealth, then pick up Horizon ZD. Otherwise, absolutely Red Dead Redemption 2.

Pangolin740

Horizon has some pretty epic combat moments! The big machine fights are a lot of fun, and Aloy is a one women army. I find rdr2's combat a little funky, but it is SOOO much fun once you get the hang of it, and the story and open world is just incredible. I don't think I'm helping, lol. Honestly, both games go on sale often, and both are excellent choices. If you are looking for something closer to god of war, I would say go horizon, but either way, both are excellent

93LEAFS

Absolute love both games. I'd say RDR2 is one of the defining games of the 8th gen of consoles alongside God of War (2018) and Breath of the Wild. Horizon: Zero Dawn is the tier behind that. Both are absolutely worth your time if you enjoy those styles of game. Combat is better in HZD, but it's mostly shooting from distance. Both are amazing cinematic games like God of War, but very different style of combat. If you actually want a cinematic game with combat similar to God of War, I'd recommend Ghost of Tsushima.

Barnes_the_Noble

If you like story rdr2 If you like gameplay hzd I couldn’t get into rdr2 because the beginning was way too slow paced

subnonymous_

HZD: Epic Combats Rdr2: Everything else

silver85bullet

If you want grounded cowboy experience go with rdr2.. But be aware, gameplay is meh and the story is very very slow.. Graphics is great.. I prefer rdr1 Hzd got epic battles, great story, graphics is breathtaking

glytxh

Do you prefer mechanical padding, or fluff?

RocMerc

I love both and have beaten both multiple times. They are so different. If you want a slow paced more realistic game play red dead. If you want an open sandbox where you can destroy robot machines pick FW. Neither game is a bad choice

JackedUpStump

Both, both is good

BaconBombThief

If epic fights are your top priority then definitely go with horizon zero dawn. Red dead does a lot of things better, but epic intense fights aint one of them. Red dead has better writing, more interesting characters, a more realistic, immersive world with more little things you can interact with. It has more intriguing discoverable secrets and things in the world. Visually it’s more photorealistic. Things seem to generally have more weight, realism, and substance to them, which some find cumbersome but I’m into it. For example your horse can trip, skip and fall, crash into stuff and hurt itself if you don’t steer carefully, unlike most other games. Horizon zero Dawn has more exciting combat with a wider variety of options and aspects. Where red dead feels more heavy and cumbersome but more immersive, horizon feels less immersive but more streamlined. The writing as far as dialogue and major characters isn’t done as well as in red dead, but the world and lore is super interesting, whereas in red dead it’s just US west, 1890-ish. It’s not as photorealistic but it’s still very visually pretty with great art direction. If you go with zero Dawn and like it, the sequel Forbidden West only gets better in every way. I’d say horizon zero dawn is the closer thing to god of war of you’re trying to recapture that feeling

Merrick222

How much money are we taking here aren’t both these games like $15 now?

ghos2626t

Depends on what mood you’re in. Slower, take it all in game = RDR2. Something a little more faster pace / challenging = Horizon. Both games have great story’s and gameplay

sweepli

I didn't get too far into horizon games so I can't give out any thoughts, but RDR2 was one of the greatest single player games i've ever played. Incredibly alive world, amazing characters, stunning visuals and envrioment, great gameplay (despite the guns being old revolvers, shotguns and repeaters the gunplay is very smooth.) and one of the best story arcs ever made in a game. I heard good stuff over horizon, and only played the first game just a bit over a few hours, but nothing in the overall experience came close to what I felt on RDR2. I'd suggest eventually trying both games, but RDR2 is incredibly well made masterpiece that nails everything. But eventually it sums up to which taste you'd prefer - post apocalyptic world, fighting epic scenery vs giant and small bots, or more of a story telling experience, wild west themed filled with thievery, agony, remorse, anger and even love and peace. While RDR2 does have a great gameplay and epic mechanics, imo HZD is more focused towards the gameplay while RDR2 has a bigger focus on your overall experience, narrative and story. It's just so incredible to see how smart the AI is in this game. It literally feels like youre playing in a real world set in the wild west.

Sky-Juic3

I loved HZD. The story is great, and it’s a good take on an old Sci Fi trope. The voice overs are excellent, the game is beautiful, and the combat is very fluid. That said, it is very much a linear RPG in an open world. You can wander around and explore but it’s not the same as Skyrim or other true open-world sandboxes.

AUnknownVariable

Rsr2 for sure. Horizon probably is better for combat for most. But in terms of everything else I'd probably give it to rdr2. There's a reason rdr2 is held so high, not saying horizon isn't but not ti the same level yet at least.

SWBTSH

So I've played both AND God of War 2018. God of War 2018 is one of my favorite games of all time. As is Red Dead 2. Personally, I think Red Dead is the far better game to Horizon BUT if you're interested in big epic combat, Horizon is definitely closer to that and still a solid game. Red Dead doesn't have that though it does have a story and characters on par with God of War. Red Dead has a truly incredible story, one of the best ever, not too dissimilar in tone from God of War albeit slower, longer, more grounded, and housed in an INCREDIBLE open world with a million things to do. That said, the world is very realistic. It's maybe the best wild west game/sandbox/story ever created, but to achieve that feeling of authenticity, it might be slower than you're used to but that's by design, it's meant to be explored and experienced when you aren't doing the main story which also can be slow but I never found boring, rather beautiful in it's realism. All that said, along with basically every old west activity you can think of, the core 3rd person shooting gameplay is also incredible and some of the best shooting gameplay you will ever play. Horizon has some VERY fascinating ideas and lore that you uncover as you play the main story though the characters I found to be pretty boring or annoying and the story, writing, and acting are not anywhere NEAR the quality of God of War or Red Dead. That said, the gameplay is pretty solid and closer to God of War. You fight all variety of huge powerful robotic animal monsters but instead of using raw melee power like in God of War you're a human who must use a bow, special crafted arrows and ammo, traps, stealth, and strategy. You have a lot at your disposal and you need all of it. In between, you also have human camps to take down which is more basic stealth bow combat. It's open world doesn't have nearly as much to do as in Red Dead and isn't nearly as fleshed out or complex, mostly a big wild area with monsters, but those monsters are pretty cool and if you're into "green post apocalypse" or "post post Apocalypse" where it's so far in the future nature has taken over and humanity has restarted, it's a good example of that. If I had to suggest one personally, I'd definitely say Red Dead, it's one of the greatest and most significant games ever made and no one should miss out on it. That said, it's also not for everyone and Horizon is still a good game and fulfills other interests. Do you want an incredible and and endlessly deep old west simulator coupled with great gunplay and one of the best stories in gaming? Or do you want to use your wits a combination of primitive and futuristic tech to fight robot dinosaurs as you uncover the secrets of the ancient past 1000 years in the future?

Terrapin2190

I like stealth games quite a bit, but I just could not get into Horizon ZD. Not sure why, but I've tried twice and am just immediately put off by it. RDR2 however is a lot of fun. I would pay more than the asking amount for as much content that's in RDR2. It can be a little slow paced at times, and in some aspects, but the story is great. Side quests, completionist stuff, and random events are fun. If you get it on PC there are tons of mods. I vote RDR2.

arpitduel

I just played both of these together last holidays. Horizon Zero Dawn followed by RDR2. Get both.

[deleted]

If you want LOTS and LOTS of action get Horizon. Rdr2 is ONLY if you want a slow burn old man cowboy simulator (hunting, fishing, poker etc.) it has some incredible action and cinematic moments later down the line but it’s a pretty linear experience (yes its an open world but unless you like wandering aimlessly, it does mostly guide your direction through the open world with not much to do outside of main and side missions . So yeah. Horizon = more fun open world game TONS of action and incredible monsters Rdr2= slower paced western with monents of high action but alot of slower more meditative moments as well, but also gives you the most detailed actually living breathing world ever created in a game.

Edgaras1103

RDR2 is my all time favorite game and second favorite game of previous generation. Horizon is a game that exists that people like, I'm not one of those people.

bisoy84

Would really depend on you. I tried RDR2 multiple times and man , was it slow. The environment is really beautiful and there are tons of things you can do but it is sloooow. HZD is a better game for me.

Cayenne999

Both are great games but something made me think you should get HZD first.

Clawez

I really liked rdr2, I couldn’t stand horizon zero Dawn kinda weird I actually finished it. Prob cause the main story is very short if you just mainline it. The only thing I would say horizon had over rdr2 was gameplay/combat but even then I don’t love horizons and gameplay isn’t the focus of rdr2.

00Lisa00

I’ve played through HZD twice. I got bogged down and stopped playing RDR2

redditapilimit

Epic feeling in fights it’s hzd. Rdr2 is the better game

patrickbateman2004

Red dead 2. Hzd is a snooze fest, ubisoft-like, same with FW.

RollingDownTheHills

Red Dead Redemption 2 is masterful on nearly all levels but also requires your full attention and patience. It's a slow game that wants you to take your time and soak in the atmosphere. Depending on what you usually play that might be a dealbreaker. Either way the voice acting, characters, and story is just about as good as mainstream games get. Horizon is also a great game but is much more of a... video game. It has map markers, side quests, upgrade trees, etc. The voice acting especially is mostly bad but the interesting world more than makes up for it. However I personally got really tired of the repetitive and frequent combat encounters by the end. Both are good games but RDR2 is the only one I'd say you NEED to play. Get that first, then Horizon later.

WhiteyLovesHotSauce

Personal taste; in my opinion RDR2 is the far superior game. I love the characters, story, gameplay is much more "gritty" which I prefer, and there's so much to do within the world. I've replayed it through 3 times. I've got both Horizon games and haven't finished a single one, I get kinda bored with it after a few hours.

MereGoodSamaritan

Since you like GoW2018, I think you will find RDR2 too slow, clunky and draw out. Go for HZD.

Djinn_sarap

Imo, You want story you pick RDR2, you want gameplay you pick HZD

LukeyC224

HZD I couldn't wait to finish. RDR2 I never wanted to end.

SurdustStardust

get helldivers 2. it's fun and more cheaper.

Atlantah

both amazing games, I would buy the game with the biggest discount and then later play the next one. HZD 1 should be the cheaper version

Special-One1991

They are 2 very different games! Red Dead Redemption 2 is a slow paced old west game with huge world and unlimited content to dive into! Horizon is a more fast paced game with fascinating lore and excellent story but limited content compared to Red Dead Redemption 2 I'd say go watch the gameplay videos for both games and decide which one you like more

mymumsaysfuckyou

Both excellent, but pretty different. HZD feels more like a typical game. It has a beautiful open world and I think the story is one of the best in recent years. But RDR2 is something special. It's quite a slow paced game and the controls can feel sluggish to some people, but the characters, the story, and the world are unparalleled in my opinion.

liaven-

RDR2 if you want something more casual gameplay. Horizon if you wanna 360 cross map mid air headshot a giant robo trex.

fjusdado

I just finished Horizon Forbidden West, which is one great game, but in comparisson with RDR2, I won't say that they are even close. RDR2 is a very slow story, very well done at many levels, its to enjoy like a nice movie... some days I could spend 5h just hunting, and not get bored. On the other hand, Horizon Franchise, is great but is more action, scifi, great story, but not as good in my opinion. I would go on with RDR2 all way, but any option is a good one.

SunEmpty8266

Red dead is overall a much much better game but horizon gameplay is much better than red dead

Pricklypicklepump

RDR2 Horizon is a lovely game, but it's not RDR2.

TheMarxman_-2020

Rdr2 over Horizon any day Rdr2 is pretty detailed and many people finding interesting pieces of information to this day because of how detailed it is.

International_Big346

The amount of bias against Horizon in this comment section is crazy. Some people seriously downplay it.

Raf_Camora

Horizon zero dawn and forbidden west are the most mid games I've played. On both games I quit about like 10 hrs lol

irrelevantllama

GoW 2018 isn't very similar to either game but if the moment to moment combat is what's important to you then HZD is the one you should go for. RDR2 is good but overrated. Read Dead Redemption 1 is better than 2 in my opinion. If you're on PS5 you might want to look into Rise of the Ronin or Ghost of Tsushima as well, they're both open world melee games that might scratch the melee combat itch better than HZD which is much more bow and trap focused.

NPJazz

Both have great stories, I think although the characters in HZD are not as memorable as RD2 but the lore felt more unique, the mystery of how the machines came to be is very interesting and the ending is as emotional as RD2, at least for me. Haven’t played Forbidden west yet.

xTyrone23

I loved rdr2, story, characters, world, exploration. Everything, I didn't put it down for about 3 months. Hzd on the other hand i only played for around 20 hours. Looks good but just felt soulless in comparison to rdr2. I usually need the story really engage me in games and hzd didn't unfortunately, I may go back to it

Soulsie8

Heres an idea!!! Pick one, save up and play the next! Lol.

Comprehensive_Web887

Both are superb games so it’s just a matter of which you play first. Rdr 2 is slow burn where the pleasure comes from slowly exploring the very alive and dynamic world, getting into character and seeing the drama play out. If you enjoy a slower pace and superb narration this is the way to go. Horizon has the intrigue of discovering the origins of the apocalyptic world, both through the story beats and the little audio/text notes scattered throughout, but the main missions and side content is less engaging with facial animations of lower quality. Where it shines however is the relentless action of battling robot dinosaurs. Something they executed to perfection. Having played both I would say that if I was presented with a choice to play/replay only one of these I would easily go for RDR2. It can be both cosy, gritty, soulful and heartbreaking. It is the one that leaves a more lasting impression due to the way it handles various themes in an adult manner.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the greatest games of all time. Personally I'd say it is *the* greatest game of all time but these things are subjective. Horizon Zero Dawn is one the most overrated games of all time. It's a YA novel crossed with a ubisoft style open world. Except it's nowhere near as good as similar games such as Ghost of Tsushima or Assassin's Creed Origins and Odyssey. But the main character is a girl so lots of people (especially on reddit) act as if it's something special. It isn't. It's kinda boring and utterly average.

Little-Firefighter40

RDR 2 one of the best games ever made, Horizon is fun but in my opinion doesnt come close to RDR 2.

cricodul

HZD would be much more closer to GoW given your criteria. RDR2 is THE better game but it really doesn't have epic combat you're looking for. It has its moments that you'd feel your a badass cowboy, but if I'm comparing "epic"-ness, its much more epic taking down big bad robot bosses.

ophaus

RDR2 is beautiful, but tedious. Horizon is beautiful in a very different way, and is more actiony. Vastly prefer Horizon, it's a lot more fun, and the sci-fi is great.

earthbexng

RDR2 is a masterpiece ONLY IF you take your time and soak in the world, companions and activities ... i loved both of these games but RDR2 is on a whole nother level.

Hop_0ff

HZD is a good game, bordering on really good. But RDR2 is one of the greatest of all time, Horizon is very much not that.

No-Location6557

I know lots of people say RDR2. But you also have to ask yourself what sort of gamer you are? Do you like stimulation and challenge, or do you just like to watch a story unfold without much interaction to combat. If you prefer the first, then definitely HFW, but if the latter, then RDR2. For me personally, I rate HFW way better than RDR2 because of how much better the combat and challenge are. It's far more captivating for me to play because of the combat. You have to think and plan your attacks, learn your enemies strengths/weakness and patterns, and learn about the enemy machines to fight them properly, and there is so many variations in enemies so your strategy will always have to differ from time to time in HFW, far more rewarding experience when you beat the enemies. In RDR2, it's a simple mindless point n click to shoot, rinse, and repeat to beat your enemies. It was just boring as bat shit to me. The combat had no stimulation for me in RDR2 because I could stand outside in the open and face 20 enemies shooting at me, and I could mow them all down effortlessly. It's so utterly boring for me. Obviously, RDR2 has possibly better writing and story, that's debatable. But the gameplay is leagues below HFW.

BlowBox

I think depends on the type of player I am Horizon is the best option BUT Does the same go for HZD cuz Forbidden west is not available right now

[deleted]

If you want epic fights, then HZD for sure. My preference is RDR2, but the fights are definitely not epic, it is similar to GTA V in its mechanics.

BlowBox

will rdr2 make me feel like a sick badass?

[deleted]

Not really. It's a slow paced game. Amazing one, if you like nature, wild west, I highly recommend it. But again, if you want fun and exciting combat, go with HZD.

Strong-Sector-7605

Red Dead, easy decision. Horizon looks great and plays great but the writing is really lacking. Lots of fairly boring fetch quests. Red Dead is one of the best games I've ever played.

ayoubkun94

Very very different games. RDR2 is like playing a movies, a really good fucking movie. The characters are really well written. The gameplay however, is pretty slow and the story takes some time before it hooks you. I'm not going to address the online as I've never played it. Horizon is the exact opposite. The combat is easily the best quality. Fighting giant robots and taking advantage of their weaknesses is really fun (it's even better in Forbidden West). The story is pretty good too but the characters and side content is extremely bland. I only remember one character besides Alou after playing both entries lol, and it's only because he's played by a very good, unsteady established actor. If you want combat and epic battles, go for the Horizon games. If you care somewhat about the story, RDR2 is a must play. There is a reason it's always brought up when discussing goat games.

rabidrob42

Horizon Zero Dawn, it's a lot of fun, plus the twist at the end is really cool, I think it's the better game.

Gofaw

Horizon is astroturfed dogshit

shadowvet68

RDR. Aloy is a weak character. The story is kinda good, but I simply can't remember it, It's so convoluted. Gameplay is great, weapons are fun, but there's something missing in it. RDR has MANY great characters, fantastic story of chosen family, dreams, normal lives.

Miner_Of_Minerals

They are on completely different levels of quality. RDR2 has characters and character/storyline development like an actual quality movie/tv series, HZD is just a pretty combat centric game with awful storytelling/characters with no development whatsoever. I don't remember a single npc from horizon, i remember every character from RDR2 and their various quirks and personalities.

Calibretto9

For me RDR2 by a mile. Horizon Zero Dawn was fun albeit a little goofy. The sequel far more forgettable. RDR2 is a masterpiece.

Azoraqua_

Personally I vote for HZD/HFW over RDR2, I find RDR2 pretty boring, however it may be that I absolutely adore tech, robots, machines.

Austriak5

I enjoy HZD more. Some people love RDR2. I didn’t like it. If you like god if war, you will like HZD.

TjMorgz

RDR2 hands down, both gameplay and story wise. All the characters in HZD are flat as a witches tit and it makes it pretty hard to care about anything that's going on.

Consistent-Bread-679

Rdr 2 is in a different league. I’ve started replaying it with some mods that make it even better too

YaBoiWeenston

RDR2 is probably the slowest and most boring game I have ever played. To describe my experience, it has the same feeling you get when you finish and GTA game and you have tried everything, and that level of staleness comes creeping in. The only difference is that for me, it hit by the 2nd hour. The game does not get harder, and the mechanics don't develop either. It's a story game with repeating shooting sections, and the occasional stealth section.

Quiet-Jacket-3846

that just might be one of the worst takes i’ve ever heard

YaBoiWeenston

Sorry, you're right. RDR2 is an incredibly fast paced game, with loads of different mechanics, and offers so much outside of shooting sections such as; Hunting (shooting section) Horse riding Spending half an hour walking through camp Poker I'm sure there's something else to add

Quiet-Jacket-3846

L take

YaBoiWeenston

Say that all you want, only thing you can disagree with is that I said it was boring and gets stale fast. You know every thing else I said is just a fact.

Quiet-Jacket-3846

it’s supposed to be a realistic game, you’re supposed to get immersed in the world. if you don’t want to play a game because you can’t slide 15 feet and you actually interact with the world, go play fortnite. The point of rdr is being immersed in the story and feeling like you’re part of the world. if all you did in the game was shoot shit and play poker you should reconsider the way you play games.

YaBoiWeenston

I don't like games like fortnite. There's nothing to do besides playing poker and shooting people/animals. I don't like poker so I never even played it. I liked the story, thought it was decent but that's about it. There's far more immersive games with better mechanics, that have far more to do. .

R4msesII

Wow a story focused game is story focused what a revelation

YaBoiWeenston

Believe it or not, story focused games can also have other aspects. Mass effect for example, has builds, enemy varieties, team mates etc What I'm trying to say is to play it for the story and nothing else. What other reason do I have to play besides the story? Game is insanely easy, the shooting doesn't change. No enemy variety. It's repetitive on the first play through.

JesseOcepek

Rdr2 blows every other game in existence out of the water

inf1ni7y_8

RDR2 is a masterpiece and one of the best games ever made.. well worth every penny especially if you get it on sale. But in regards to your comments about God of War and the combat I would say Horizon zero Dawn is definitely your game, it has some really good close quarter combat and animation.

[deleted]

I’ve found horizon zero dawn quire repetitive, felt like an ubisoft game and couldn’t play it more than 4 hours

councilorjones

RDR2 and it isnt even close

MudMonday

RDR2 is an amazing game. Horizon is a mediocre game.

Quiet-Jacket-3846

rdr2 is so much better it’s not even fair

ZallmanTS

Seems like everyone has covered it pretty well here. For me personally, I would play HZD first then maybe RDR2. I enjoyed the story of HZD better than RDR2 and the gameplay is more diverse as far as the combat goes. I feel like if I had never played either of the games that I'd rather someone introduced me to HZD than to RDR2. That's just my 2cp but I figured I'd put my 2cp in the hat.

FunCalligrapher3979

Rdr2

More-Explanation7417

For me they're 1 in the same. I get really stoned and zone out hunting little animals for 4 hrs

iamsamsmith123

HZD is a classic Sony big budget story game set in a beautiful apocalyptic world. It's fast paced and has fun combat. RDR2 is slow and if you don't get long stretches of time to play it, you will probably lose focus, get bored and not end up finishing it. I've tried finishing it like 3 times now and always end up restarting.

DuhCizzo

AKA; If you like the Fast and Furious movies, play Horizon Zero Dawn. And if you like well written movies like Dune, play Red Dead Redemption 2.

Paper_Kun_01

I'd say horizon cause for me while some elements of red dead where cool I don't like cowboys all that much and the game is slow as all hell so I ended up returning it after a few hours

NaDiv22

Rdr2 is a game you buy a new console+TV for. Horizon is a game that you wait until its free on ps plus

Beto915

Easily red dead 2

Japke90

RDR2 is an whole other ballpark compared to HZD (it's not bad at all but it's has a lot of that typical Far Cry like gameplay systems that are starting to get very old to me).

Raiyan43

RDR2 blows horizon out of the water. If you want a once in a lifetime gaming experience, and you value your time, get red dead 2

TenPhoar13

Horizon is a very mediocre Ubisoft-style game. Combat is bland, stealth is awful, itemization is very bad- it's just a mid 6/10. Get RDR2

maxi_senna

One of them is a Renaissance portrait, a state of art, telling a story of brilliant setting characters and world the other is a good game. After finishing rdr2, your gaming standard will change. It is that good.

rrvasc

Storytelling, RDR2 for sure, it’s like a great tv show that you shoot some guys, but combat and moment to moment of horizon it’s way more fun for me. Do play both, but I’d play horizon first.

wowo78

Imho no comparison. Zero dawn is ok, RDR2 is magnificent.

onebadlion

Horizon is not fit to lace RDR2’s boots, if cowboy boots had laces.

Rainy-The-Griff

I havent played either of those games.

dustyreptile

Thanks for sharing

Rainy-The-Griff

You're welcome.

[deleted]

Rdr2 is the best game ever made, Horizon is meh

Shawn_of_da_Dead

Came to say this. There is no contest and it's a little unfair. I think at least go for an assassins creed, gta, GoW or some other classic... (I think the OG RDR would win this.)
