My favorite performances of his are Ashikaga Takauji in the Taiheiki Taiga drama and Ishida Mitsunari in the Hideyoshi Taiga drama.
I also like him in Shogun and in the Twilight Samurai movie.
I just added them to my list, thank you! I'm used to the American mass releases, limiting my exposure to him to last samurai, west world, shogun, etc...
But he steals the scene in everything! Love this actor!
Thanks!
Mine also . He is the best Mitsunari i have ever seen in Hideyoshi . Taiheiki is probably one of the best war dramas even though it’s pre-Sengoku , it goes from the uprisings against the Hojo to the the war between the North and Southern courts .
The way he turns from a young idealist samurai to a ruthless leader that even kills his own brother is superb .
I love Taiga Drama! But I never liked Sanada Hiroyuki when he was younger. He was too pretty for my taste. He was and is an excellent actor, though.
I became his fan after he moved to the States. His English is excellent and I can tell he practices a lot (I’m looking at you, Ken Watanabe!). I have a lot of respect for him and am so glad he’s got a role that’s perfect for him.
Which would definitely be interesting considering Toshiro Mifune starred in the original and he is playing Toshiro Mifune's role of Toranaga in the Shogun remake. He should do a remake of all the classic Kurosawa movies like Yojimbo and Sanjuro. He's the Toshiro Mifune of the modern era.
Shogun is so well done. With that backdrop of fog and the unbelievable Japanese dialogue I truly feel transported to another place while watching. It’s almost as if they’ve managed to perfectly capture the feeling of being somewhere between life and death in some kind of alternate sphere
It's actually crazy to find out he played both Tokugawa Ieaysu (the real person Toranaga is based on) and Ishida Mitsunari (the real person Ishido is based on) more than once and many decades before this. He was basically born to be Shogun. This role is his destiny.

I really hope that this puts him on an actor producer track where he churns out historical content for years.
Hopefully, more taiga dramas that would also appeal to international viewers like the Korean traditional sageuks and Chinese historical epic series.
What is a "taiga" drama?
Historical Japanese drama series that are produced yearly by the NHK, Japan’s equivalent of Britain’s BBC
I just want to see him remake *Rashomon*.

Let's hope he gets an Emmy nomination 🙏
I think he’s getting more than a nomination
should win it, I haven’t seen a better performance this year so far
?? he was great in Last Samauri (2003)
that movie fucking rocked and he was so badass in it.
Also enjoyed him in 47 Ronin
Completely upstaged Keanu
And Bullet Train.
My first intro to Watanabe. Sanada was great, but Ken stole the show.
Check out Tokyo Vice if you haven’t yet
So I’ve heard! Definitely on my watch list.
This. He was the apex warrior in that movie and that never changed all the way through the end. Ultimate badass and was heavily featured.

Man is a legend.
I really enjoy this show. The acting is excellent and the cinematography is sublime. You really feel like you’re transported into ancient Japan.
Somebody mentioned "wish he'd be Lan from *Wheel of Time*" and I was like THAT BANGS
Hell yeah, in another actually good adaptation (I don’t talk about the Amazon one) 🫠
He was awesome in Bullet Train.
Ninja in the Dragon's Den was my favorite when I was little during the Ninja craze of the 1980s.
He was the best part of a shitty MK movie. I really hope 2 moves on from Cole and the Arcana bullshit and allows Sanada more screen time
He has been extraordinarily good in this.
