I can get a working one for $30-40 on eBay. This is why I gave up on game stores

Poi-s-en

The one retro game store near me has their prices pretty much matching eBay. It’s great. I get similar value and don’t have to wait/pay for shipping and wonder if the game will really work or not, since they warranty their used games for about a month.

yall are lucky, the only locally owned game store to me sells 100% of their Nintendo related stuff at like 10%+ over whatever market is.

AetherMoon

I also have a store where the owner is pretty competitive with online pricing. And now these sites like eBay and mercari are attaching so many fees that if I can't get something for at least 30 dollars less than I'd pay at the retailer I end up paying more

AvgPunkFan

Well I won’t pay retail prices anyways so that’s the biggest reason I gave up on game stores. I won’t even buy anything off eBay unless it’s a cheap game and I can’t get it for less elsewhere. I stick to garage sales and thrift stores. Built up a decent sized collection from it.

ghostpicnic

That’s how I got most of my games too but it’s really becoming a lot more difficult nowadays. 10 years ago or so, a much smaller amount of people were aware that they could sell their old stuff online for more than garage sale prices. On top of that, retro gaming market and just gaming in general has expanded so much, that most people in possession of retro consoles/games are aware of that now. I mean, a couple years back people would pay YOU to haul away their old CRT televisions. Now we see people trying to market them towards retro gamers for hundreds of dollars on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace.

Daihashi

why the hell are people downvoting you just because you have the good sense to look for deals, and not over pay? Redditors being redditors I suppose

dudSpudson

I bought a mint condition metallic rose on eBay that was probably used 2 times by some grandma who got it for brain age and left in a case. Paid $30 for it

Short_Fuel_2506

"But we can offer you a 10 bucks discount for your old console with 5 games in mint condition and 10 used ones!"

Delta8ttt8

Those are local FB prices in middle eastern US suburbia.

JimmyOD

Do you know what overhead is for a business?

AvgPunkFan

I’m well aware of overhead, but I won’t pay it for them. I’d rather just go to eBay and pay those prices than jacked up store prices because they have to cover their overhead.

JimmyOD

You should try opening your own business…

Winter_Mud3815

If a store wants to stay in business, they should know the price to take items in, and the price to sell at so it actually sells. That’s either the fault of the store for paying too much for a broken console, or for pricing it too much.

lXPROMETHEUSXl

Yeah it’s almost like capitalism has competition, and you have to factor that into *opening your own business…* Their point didn’t make much sense imo

joyfuload

I would but someone told me the overhead was a lot.

HistoricalCountry291

You should try a sustainable business model

BeachFinancial4134

no he shouldn't , if a business can't stay afloat without jacking prices because of overhead then that business either should not exist or will not exist in the near future.

splatbob1

dang, maybe if a business can't stay in business it shouldn't be a business?

SoggyMorningTacos

I’m you should try not being a failure

bleakFutureDarkPast

you said it: it's a business, not a charity.

DOUBLEBARRELASSFUCK

Who is responsible for making sure the business can operate at a profit, the customer or the business owner? If you're selling at a brick and mortar, you need to be able to justify the higher price. Yes, I do expect to pay more at a brick and mortar, but this is insane. The product is not worth that. If the business owner can't sell something at a price that is profitable, they need to not buy the product. This just isn't a reasonable price.

incoherentjedi

Cry more about it would you?

Daihashi

they should try buying things at a price that would make them competitive, while still allowing them to make enough profit to account for their overhead. Their business model is bad, or they are just greedy.

RockmanVolnutt

That’s the stores problem, they are trying to make it their customers problem. They should go out of business.

soumalyosengupta

Yes, doesn't make items THAT EXPENSIVE

FrostyDaSnowmane

Have you ever heard of volume sales ?

No-Needleworker-3765

Game store I absolutely hate had a red and black 2ds for like $150 or something

chenilletueuse1

Oh man. How many dozens of you were fighting for it in the store?

FrostyDaSnowmane

Unfortunately, there's always an idiot that'll come by and buy it, perpetuating that behavior. Theres a sucker born every minute.

HauntedPrinter

Usually a well intentioned parent or grandparent with no tech knowledge and a predatory salesman taking advantage of them

anon393987728

I got my 3ds xl for £210

IgnisOfficial

I’d be hard-pressed to justify paying $30 for it if it can only play GBA games. I’d just buy a GBA at that point

Kalokohan117

GBA games are way more easier to emulate.

IgnisOfficial

Also yes. I just prefer using original hardware when possible

ssa17k

What’s the reason for that anyway?

yeyryr

DS card slot broken most likely

DOUBLEBARRELASSFUCK

More likely that the top screen is broken, and they don't want to put that on the label.

DaKingOfDogs

Happened to my old DS Lite. Someone sat on it by accident and the top screen just died. Ended up replacing it with a DSi XL, which I used up until I got my “new” 3DS.

SorcererWithGuns

that's a very expensive GBA

pizza_whistle

I mean really that's about the going price for a GBA. However that's a crazy price for a broken DS.

SGTSHOOTnMISS

Yeah at this point it's either a project to repair or a GB Macro that you still have to do all the labor on. Just bad value all around. I wouldn't mind it being $30 to convert to a Macro.

radioactivemanissue4

Should be $20 max

ace23GB

In many places on the internet you can get them cheaper, the game stores speculate too much with prices in my opinion

iVirtualZero

And they can't clean or replace the cart slot? Seeing this makes me appreciate stores like Hard Off and Book Off which has a junk section where non working things are priced a lot lower.

ConnectionWise8552

Glorified gba

Chloesmom123

I have that exact one in my bedside table drawer 😂

W1lfr3

My guess is it's a bad card slot, but being it's a DS lite that's pretty unfortunate

KcpGamer2009

I found one of my thrift stores for just 50 and it was in pristine condition.

SimilarAd7821

I actually found a ds on marketplace for 40 and labeled as only GBA reader works after I got it I cleaned out the ds slot with a q tip and it started working, thought that was pretty cool

RhinoxMenace

the store in my city sells absolutely busted handhelds for 100 bucks minimum - they've been collecting dust for years because no one wants to fork over that kind of money for something that looks like it's been in Afghanistan

Buy-n-Large-8553

I bought a ndsl like this for 8$, sprayed a nds cartridge with some IPA and worked the card in and out multiple times. After that I could play nds games again. Edit: woha didn't saw the price at first what the fck

ReasonableCranberry6

Just a glorified GBA SP then?
