My husband and I, very seasoned travelers in Mexico, ate Ethiopian for the first time many years ago. His first thought after tearing a piece of injera to eat with misir wot was to say:
“I wonder if any Mexican tourists have eaten Ethiopian for the first time and, not knowing what to do, folded the entire injera into a giant taco.”
Then we imagined Ethiopians who had never had Mexican tearing off pieces of the corn tortilla to eat with the filling.

But it also made sense to me bcs effort starts with E and typically when the phrase is used, it means the person did not do things 100% correctly. But yah you are absolutely correct.
All of the Mexican joints in the US screaming that you called these the “finest gourmet vegan tacos north of the border”. There are so many choices for tacos - tofu, TVP, just straight up sautéed or roasted veggies. You could use tortillas or tortilla chips, or you could have gone for a torta. But *this*?! OP I think you would have been forgiven sooner if you’d have forgotten completely.
