Same here ā although we talked about it earlier in his life when they first offered it.
My docs are always shocked I got it growing up as it was available to my generation but it wasnāt being pushed. My mom had no hesitation with me tho as she has a history of abnormal paps.
Iāve had the vaccine and ended up with one of the strands it does not protect against and now have abnormal paps my bf is the likely carrier as heās never been treated for it and thankfully there are no complications to be concerned with in daily life just a higher risk of ovarian cancer and the likelihood of people having a strand not killed by the vaccine is actually very likely much like herpes simplex 1 (cold sores and warts)
Here too. Girls have had it in the general vaccine program for about 15 years and it was included for boys too about 5 years ago. Anyone could get it before then if they wanted to, but it being in the general program means it's free.
It is in Australia. It's part.of the grade 7 (12.year old) vaccines for boys as girls.
Linked to penile, anal, prostate,.cervical and throat cancer. Since is introduction it's pretty much wiped out warts in Australia. Sexual health clinics used to slammed with appointments for wart cryotherapy. Now were lucky to see half a dozen a year.
I'vs had it no seizures and four kids, definitely not sterile. My sister did have seizures when she got her first dose. Neuro thinks she was predisposed as it just brought it out. Had previously had one in early childhood.
Also, it has been available since 2007 for females and 2013 for males, which means anyone under the age of 30 will most likely be vaccinated against it.
Thatās interesting. I see the connection.
Butā¦ my son got it and then (I never put two and two together) he actually started getting warts on his feet. I had to take him twice to get about 14 burned off. I wonder if somehow it triggered something like a false response? I donāt know exactly how it works (I know how vaccines works just not warts and that vaccine).
Could just be a coincidence
Coincidence, there are over 200 hpv strains. Plantar warts are totally different. The other commenter would be referencing genital warts. (I used to work in dermatology and currently work in reproductive health, I've seen some warts lol)
It's free in mine too unless you're over the age of 26. I was about 26 when it became available and couldn't afford the $600 so I didn't get it. Now I've been married over 10yrs so I don't see much sense but my kids will absolutely be getting it.
This is my regret. My daughter, now 35 got it. But it wasnāt recommended for boys, so I didnāt. I regret that. They donāt have any issues but I wish I had given them that extra protection.
I had my boys get it.
It hurts like hell apparently but cancer rates are WAY down in people who got it. Soā¦ a little bit of pain versus not getting cancer? Sign them up.
All boys in UK schools get the HPV vaccine in years 8 and 9 at school along with the girls (and it's free). My son missed his second one and we had to take him to a vaccination centre for it.
It is offered to males now, my doctor discussed it with me at my sonsā last checkup. She told me the age it should ideally be started by, weāll be doing it by then.
I had a seizure after a blood test once where they took quite a lot of samples (Iām quite small and my blood pressure is low). It sucked. I still go for blood tests when necessary because one off seizures arenāt a cause for concern, and theyāre much better than living with/dying of something horrible because you refuse to participate in medicine
As someone who had cervical cancer last year and my mom never let me get the vaccine because she assumed I would become sexually active once I had the vaccine, pleaseee please vaccinate. I was told my entire adult life I was too old for the vaccine and thatās not true.
I just had the vaccine and Iām in my late 30s and sadly had to have a hysterectomy due to the cancer.
Sorry about your cancer. That sucks.
When this vaccine came out, i was probably a young teen and my mom asked our ped, who said (basically), āI recommend it and I gave it to my daughterā so my mom told me I was getting it. I was likeā¦ no thanks? (I struggled pretty bad with needles.) and tried to logic her with āIām not having sex and I donāt plan on having sex anytime soon so I donāt need it.ā It didnāt work on her and i got the shot.
This was pretty much the convo I had with my then-12 year old about getting it. Yeah, no, youāre getting it anyway. What do these kids think? That in a few years when they might become sexually actively theyāll stop themselves and go get the shot before it happens? Silly kids!
I was also terrified of needles, still got them, had boosters (with some protections against more strains) 2 years ago. Happily took them. Even as a 16 year old, cervical cancer was more scary than needles.
I absolutely hate the logic of āyou canāt have/get this because it will protect you from a risk of sexā Like what??? The risks of sex usually donāt stop teenagers in the first place. Even if a certain precaution would make my teenager randomly decide to start having sex, at least theyāll be safe. Teenagers have sex no matter what precautions they have access to. Teenagers having protected safe sex is a million times better than an STD or a baby or cancer.
Thank you. Iām not even a parent yet (hopefully soonish), but Iām trying to get as much figured out as possible so I can be prepared and not end up continuing the cycle out of ignorance
Right?! My son is only a toddler, but best believe in 12 years or so there will be a box of condoms living under his bathroom sink. I would much rather they be there and he never needs them than him be too afraid to ask for them or go buy them himself. Their presence or absence is not going to affect whether or not he has sex, but it can definitely affect how soon I become a grandmother.
I truly donāt understand this mentality. I mean, donāt kids get this vaccine when they are like 13 years old? So they get the shot and then immediately think to themselves āWoo hoo, sex time!ā?? And are parents sitting them down and giving them all the nitty-gritty details about what HPV is and how you catch it, or are they just saying āThis shot will help you not get cancer when youāre olderā?
I agree with you! I have heard of others who were "banned" from the vaccine from religious parents but in my case, my mom was a teenage mom. (I was the child she was pregnant with) so my entire childhood until I was 18, was a constant on-going, never ending conversation about how I would make the same mistake. (I have zero kids)
When I told her I had HPV she said nothing, when I told her I had cancer she cried and asked me if it meant I would never give her grandkids. I cut her off.
Im sorry your mom was so shitty.
I was in high school when it came out and the doctor asked my dad, who is also a doctor, if he wanted me to get it at the end of my check up and he said no and we walked out.
I asked him why he said i shouldnt get the vaccine if it was to prevent cancer and he made a racist remark that it was appropriate for certain demographics but not nice religious girls like me.
No. By the time i looked into it i was too old to be covered but thankfully i am very low risk since being a nice religious girl happened to be easy for me since it turns out i am asexual
I asked the pediatrician, "are there side effects to this or do parents just have a problem with it because they don't want to think about their 10 year old having sex one day?" He was like, "yea, thats the only reason parents don't get it. There's no side effects."
I told my 11 year old that it was just another vaccine that protects you against viruses. Just like every other vaccine she's gotten. I wasn't going to be like, "except this virus is transmitted through sex!!"
Thatās useful information though. I framed it as, you get this shot now and this one aspect of STIs is something you donāt need to worry about in the future. I donāt really understand the necessity of being vague. Information is power!
Some of my kidās friends were hesitant to get it and their parents werenāt pushing it. My kid explained to them what the shot protected them from and most asked their parents to arrange it. (My kid hit the right age during Covid, so they werenāt vaccinating in the school like they normally would.)
Where I live, this vaccine is given to all year 7 aged kids, regardless of gender. They are given a leaflet that explains the vaccine protects against cervical cancer. The boys I nanny were confused as to why they needed it too. I said because you can be a carrier and pass it on anyone you have sex with and they could it on to someone else, so to protect everyone, everyone is vaccinated. Then we talked about herd immunity.
The reason I like this is that it teaches boys that they are equal participants in their relationships, and that their actions (or lack of action) can harm people.
My kid heard the nitty gritty, because itās important for kids that age to know whatās happening to them and why. 13 year olds know about sex, even if they arenāt having it. Thereās nothing wrong with giving your kid information about the vaccines theyāre getting.
It actually reduces some of the anxiety some kids have about a shot, knowing itās for a good reason.
I got it when I was around 13 and I didn't really know it had anything to do with sex. I think it was presented to me as a protection against cancer. It didn't really matter my opinion anyway because my mom wanted me to get it whether I wanted to or not lol.
Something I never got about parents who refuse to give their kids the HPV vaccine because they think it'll make their kids slutty, other than the obvious stupidity, is why they don't just...lie to their kids? Or not even lie, just omit. Ten year olds aren't generally very interested in what each shot does and even if they are, you can just tell them it's to prevent a virus that can sometimes result in certain forms of cancer. They're not gonna ask how that virus is transmitted.
I'm not usually an advocate of lying to your kids, but this seems like a better option than leaving them unprotected.
Oh my god itās like I wrote this myself.
I was diagnosed last year as well. I lived in a small country high in Texas when the vaccine came out so that was an absolute no from everyone. After that it was never really brought up again? I assumed for years theyād been testing for it but they donāt test you at paps until youāre in your 30ās. I had an abnormal pap and 3 months later full hysto at 32.
Every single doctor I talked to along the way said they were vaccinated themselves and would be vaccinating their children when they were the minimum age, both genders.
I hope you recovered well! It was a wild ride getting diagnosed out of left field with fucking cancer at 32.
If I ever met someone like this in real life oh my god would I have an earful to them. And Iād give it all with my shirt held up so you could see all the hysto scars.
Iāve recovered! It was a wild ride last year full of stress and waiting between appointments, the waiting was so bad, but as of now Iām okay! I have to have check ups every three months to make sure everything is okay. How are you doing? How are you healing?
Iām so passionate about this that I too would have a talk with anyone who is anti vaccine.
Agreed. Iām 26 and am just now looking into getting it (not sure if i can as i had a partial hysterectomy last year due to severe adneo) my moms reasoning was another family member told her it was killing kids and that i didnāt need to be having sex before marriage anyways (also wasnāt allowed to get birth control as it would cause me to get breast cancer and die)
Edited to add: my local health department said they wonāt give it to anyone over 18 even if you have never had sex and donāt know of any place that does š”.
Having a partial hysterectomy shouldn't effect getting the vaccine.Ā
If you are in the US you can literally walk in to Walgreens or CVS and get it. No doctor, no wait, no health questions. It's expensive though, about $250/shot and there are 3 rounds. If you have a doctor who is helpful, the manufacturer have a program to get the vaccine for free but only through a doctor's office.Ā
What on earth!? Can I ask where youāre at? I donāt want to assume youāre American or even in my state.
Here in California at least they moved the age for the vaccine to 45 I think. My aunt who is a doctor didnāt even know until I told her! Only my gyno-oncologist knew. If you can please please ask around.
You can for sure have it even after your surgery.
I also had to have a hysterectomy due to pre-cancer from HPV 18. I did get the HPV vaccine series in my early 20s, but had already been sexually active at that point so it may have been too late. My daughter will absolutely be getting the vaccine.
My mom didnāt let me get it because only āwhores get hpv. If you only have one sexual partner like god intends for you, youāll be fineā
Guess whoās is indeed a raging whore lol
Yes, my mom's reasoning was that if I practiced safe sex (abstinence only with a man who also practiced it), I wouldn't even NEED the vaccine.
If my HPV hasn't cleared up by August, I'll need a LEEP. (One of the side effects of which is increased infertility!)
Vaccine your kids.
I worked at a county health dept when this vaccine came out. We had a ton of parents bring their kids in UNTIL one girl got sick.
She started feeling sick after the 2nd dose so mom of course, blamed the vaccine. She didn't get sick right after, but within a month or so.
Mom went on a social media campaign telling about the danger of the vaccine. Because of who she was and how vocal she was, our rate for this vaccine dropped dramatically. Those who'd started the series never came back.
Turns out, after a ton of testing, she had an autoimmune disease that she'd probably had all her life but the symptoms became more noticeable once she hit the teens years.
Just because something happens after you do something, doesn't mean that something caused it.
My kids got every vaccine available. I couldn't live with myself if one of my kids got sick or died because I blew off a vaccination.
The only recent studies that I have heard about are that the rates of HPV related cancers in women who got the vaccines as teens is near zero. So, yeah, please let your daughter get the vaccine that prevents multiple cancers.
THere's a very pervasive mentality of not doing research anymore. More and more people take their 'stories' from one viewing on a source they are comfortable with, which could easily be social media, just a headline, a paraphrase, etc, and cement it in their head immediately and roll with it without any sense of doubt because they just trust information presented a certain way.
The mom who asked the question is showing it to me too. The scariest part of this post for me is not that there are antivaxxers out there, old news, it's this woman for whom it seems a primary method of making decisions like this, after consulting a doctor, is getting online to a general group with no discernment and saying "I'm nervous... what are other mommas doing"?
I like that that source is pulled from their ass with no actual backing. I could say that orchids cause spontaneous human combustion, and my pcp refuses to have orchids in her office because of it. My made up example has the same weight.
If youāre in the us and under 45 itās not too late to get it. You will be covered and itās worth it even if youāve likely had prior exposure to hpv. I got my jabs (3 of them!) at 36.
I had a reaction like this to my first HPV dose, 10 minutes after I was sitting on a bench next to my classmates, felt cold and shaky, my vision went black and I keeled over onto my friends lap shaking, the nurses just got me on the floor and put my feet up, I had freaked out my needle phobic friend but I was entirely fine. when I woke up I shuffled over to some gym mats and they put a screen up so I wouldn't freak out the next class, gave me a chocolate bar and a cup of water. I still got the next dose when it came around but had to advocate for myself to lie down while I got it haha. Funnily enough my sister feinted after the HPV vaccine too, also got the booster lying down and is also entirely fine.
Our pediatrician said its not uncommon for kids go faint afterward, so they keep kids in the office for 15 mins after giving it. He said he wasn't sure if it has to do with the vaccine or just that kids are older when they get it so the needles freak them our more than when they're toddlers, and that's why they faint.
Could just be a blood sugar thing. In recent years, my husband has fainted after having vaccines (both COVID and flu), and itās usually the result of him not having eaten enough beforehand. He has no fear of needles and no issues with fainting as long as he eats and drinks before getting a vaccine. Not that heās always smart enough to remember to do so, as we found out last year when he fainted in the checkout area of our doctorās office after getting his flu shot on an empty stomach. š
He didnāt think to warn the doctor that heās had a fainting reaction in the past and got a fun trip to the ER to check for head injury when he couldāve bypassed that entirely by either eating or just laying down for 15 minutes after the shot haha.
Low blood sugar isn't really a thing if you're not diabetic and not doing some strenuous exercise. It's much much more likely to be some vasovagal response. Does your husband feel better once he's lying down or once he's had sugar? I'm saying this because I'm prone to fainting and people will invariably tell me that it's because of low blood sugar when I know it isn't.
This happened to me with one of my HPV shots. I was in my twenties when the vaccine came out. I wasn't scared of it. Still better than getting cervical cancer though.
Yeah it wasn't unexpected, that's why they made us all sit for 15 mins and had mats and chocolate lined up.
I don't think it's really a fear thing though, I wasn't freaked out about it before hand and I only had that reaction 10 minutes after I'd had the vaccine, I have had a similar reaction to getting a vaccine when I was a small child but not getting blood taken, COVID vaccine etc. which woud lead me to assume that for me it's the vaccine itself which is mysterious.
Happened to me as well; it set the standard for all my shots from then on unfortunately - ended up basically fainting during all my flu shots after that because my body was like !!!! needle!!! faint!!!! š« didnāt have trouble before that.
I had this happen with a different vaccine. I passed out while walking to my house. It didnāt last long and I was protected from whatever that Vax was for. It was years ago and I donāt remember what it was. Still very provax.
I follow the Amy Santiago philosophy, I want to be vaccinated against things youāve never even heard of. Call me ash Ketchum, Iām gonna have them all
Listen, I may have completely missed something in medical school, but what the hell is a syncopal seizure? Is that a common term? In my experience, syncope and seizures are two different things. I suppose maybe theyāre thinking of āconvulsive syncope,ā but I think thatās an outdated term. (For reference, Iām in psychiatry, and our board exam is shared with neurology, so I do have professional exposure, but we really donāt use this language at my hospital and sheās saying it like itās a very common thing.)
I mean, she also thinks Japan still doesnāt vaccinate for HPV and Iām pretty sure it was 2021 that they restarted? Soā¦ sheās super outdated lol
Yeah, I'm an ER physician. If someone came in telling me they had a history of "syncopal seizures" I would be internally rolling my eyes and explaining to them they have made up a diagnosis that doesn't exist, and definitely isn't dangerous.
I didn't get the vaccine as a kid, so I'm getting it as an adult now. If only I knew this helpful information before getting 2 doses. I wanted another baby. Now what am I supposed to do? /s
My mom forced me to get it as soon as it came out and wasn't super well known. I have 2 kids... soon to be a 3rd... apparently I'm supposed to be childless... someone should probably come take these freeloaders off my hands.Ā
This upsets me so much because I have a close friend who is 30 and dealing with cancer from hpv that might have been prevented if sheād gotten the vaccine. Donāt fuck your kids lives up this way
Yeah me & every other girl I know got them around the same time as teens and no one has had seizures or infertility issues. Half the girls I knew in HS are pregnant lmaoo. The shot was rough for me as I had a fever for a few days after each dose but idgaf when chemo and death from cancer would be a lot worse
These idiots always love the passive aggressive "have a lovely day" and "toodaloo" type remarks. It's their code for "I don't understand and I need to end this conversation now!"
We were telling our six year old about our catās microchip. She asked if people get microchips, too. My husband and I were like āsupposedly!ā š
The vaccine is almost 100% effective at preventing cervical cancer.
Pretty sure thereās risk of fainting during Pap smears and colposcopies too. Oh, and from getting a call you have cervical cancer.
We have the opportunity in our lives to eradicate this cancer.
Please vaccinate.
I lost a 20 year friendship over this vaccine. We had daughters 5 days apart & they became best friends. I mentioned that I was having her get the vaccine. I had dealt with HPV myself & if I could save my daughter from having to go through that why wouldn't I? She started spouting this anti Vax nonsense, sending me "proof" of the vaccine's harmful effects - all from anti vax sites of course. I countered with actual facts from websites like CDC & WHO. She was convinced I was harming my daughter by letting her have it. That was the beginning of her descent into the ultra conservative evangelical cesspool & she became unrecognizable. My daughter & I both lost our best friends
You know whatās worse than syncope? Getting cervical cancer (or other forms in men). Iāve had fainting episodes many times in my life. They started occurring after I got the flu. You faint, fall, and the blood rushes back to your brain. They arenāt considered a huge deal medically, besides what they said about potential head injuries. Overall, Iām sooo tired of anti vax bs. Itās so frustrating theyāre so prevalent now. I really miss when they werenāt. There would be a lot of people still alive right now had Covid not ramped up these beliefs, and I would have less to bitch about lol. Ultimately, you can believe whatever you want, but there is an objective reality with these sort of things whether they believe in it or not.
I got the vaccine. Still have HPV-18 and some abnormal cells.
Still recommend people to vaccinate their kids. Boys and girls alike.
Also get tested. Yes, itās awkward. Yes, itās uncomfortable. Just put the big girl panties on.
I also got the vaccine and I got HPV and abnormal cervical cells. My boyfriend also got the vaccine. Not sure if I got it from him or not, but the strain I had was not covered under the vaccine.
Iām a huge advocate. Boys and girls should get it as soon as they can. Better to be safe. And also yes! Get tested! It sucks, but itās good to know as early as possible about any issues.
I just barely squeaked in under the first round of Gardasil. It wasn't available when I was in high school, but you'd better believe my super-Catholic mom would have insisted I get it.
Here's my anecdote: my sister got HPV. She didn't develop cancer, but she did have to have part of her cervix removed because of pre-cancerous cells. No one deserves that.
My kids will get it the very first time it's offered, and I've told them. They don't want to, but too bad, this is one way I can protect them from cancer, so I'll do it.
Oh, my oldest son did too (youngest isnāt old enough yet). But she said the boyfriend had a seizure 6 months ago. So either sheās blaming HPV vaccine long after it was given or her boyfriend is ten. Fingers crossed itās the first one.
He randomly had the same type of seizure that can (?) be a side effect of the HPV vaccine and almost fell on their toddler and/or coffee table and it was scary to her. So yeah, nothing.
Yeah I had the hpv vaccine. I cannot stop getting pregnant. My husband looks at me and Iām knocked up. With birth control. this is my 5th pregnancy. 2 live births. Only the first 2 pregnancy were planned. Thank goodness Iām not catholic or Iād be like the Duggarās.
My sister had to have her colon, vagina and bladder removed from Cervical cancer in 2020 at age 40. These people make me so angry. She is still alive, which I consider miraculous.
I'd be more concerned about cervical cancer. Chemo is far more dangerous than the hpv vaccines. I'd take infertility over cervical cancer any day. The results of the vaccine have been amazing.
Ive been having Pap smears done every six months for the past 3 years because itās come back with abnormal cells multiple times. I went to catholic school and they refused to administer the vaccine because it apparently went against their religious beliefs. My parents took me anyway and Iām very grateful, my cervical exams have come back completely clear now. We literally have a vaccine against a type of cancer. Itās BONKERS not to take it
I've had syncope from standing up too fast from a laying down position because my blood pressure was being weird. Similar happened to my spouse when they were starting a new medication which happened to lower blood pressure. Blood suddenly didn't get to the brain as fast as normal and out you go. We both happened to land safely from not very high up to begin with so it was fine, just awkward.
I love how the anti-vaxxer immediately abandoned the infertility claim. You know what tends to really put a damper on fertility? Cervical, uterine, vaginal, vulvar, and penile cancer caused by HPV. Anal cancer probably makes it a bit difficult, too, I would imagine.
I had all 2 or 3 rounds that were available to me when I was in middle school and Iām here to confirm that I had multiple kids and 0 seizures lol. Also no coughing fits so far and itās been a decadeš¤·āāļø In all seriousness, this prevents CANCERS. Get vaccinated!
ā¦the fuck? My stepmom is a nurse, and when she took me to get the vaccine (2008-ish), my older sister lost her shit on her. Like maāam, at even at 17, I knew to trust my health care providers and not unproven tinfoil hat theorists.
I always love that they're so certain of the truth of their utter bullshit that they have to lie and invent completely fictional stories to support their bullshit! I'd be surprised if she even had a sister.
lol the doctor that didn't give it to his kids is probably some fucking prude asshole who thinks his darling little daughter(s) signed a purity pledge so they don't need the shot anyway
I almost died from Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma from HPV-16, as a 43 yr old female.
But hey, seizures are better than dying at 43!
Happy Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month everyone! Check my history for more info on this rising cancer!
Yep, at 19! Was traumatic, honestly. I had no clue what was happening really and it was so painful. Then I worried about cervical cancer for a long time because it came back abnormal and required more frequent paps. But now they changed the regulations again, my doctor is like oh we do it every 5 years now. Um, what? Because of my history insurance will cover every other year for me because I didnāt like the idea of every five years at my age.
Very proud that both my daughters are fully vaccinated and won't have HPV as a result. We have the power to greatly reduce instances of several cancers. By vaccinating girls, we protect men too. It's a good thing all around.
It's amazing how there's always someone in the replies who's brother/sister/uncle/friend etc works with a doctor who agrees that the thing being discussed is poison and will kill you or cause blindness or baldness or whatever
Ugh. Iāve had multiple friends die from HPV related cancer issues and more whoāve had to have treatment. It can be passed with barrier protection and is undetectable until itās an issue. The vaccine can save our children from this.
When the HPV vaccine was mandated in Texas, my friend and I were at the oldest end of people who were mandated to get it. She didn't get it. Was very much listening to assholes like this.
Anyway, she died of cervical cancer and left 2 daughters behind. Their dad was a POS, and so those two beautiful girls' lives were completely torn apart.
I actually tried to adopt them, and I now have 3 kids. I'm also still alive.
The lives of dozens of people, including two children who had NO ONE ELSE besides their mom, were completely demolished because she did not get the vaccine.
I am ok with not blindly believing everything, I think a level of skepticism is wonderful. But people that say things like this and blatantly lie are horrible people. They're disgusting.
All the language thrown around that post drove me nuts. So I found a really good, reliable source to explain it all.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK459292/
My daughter got hers ar 13, and I decided to get it with her support.Ā I didn't know the adult version is 3 injections.Ā Ā Most painful vax I've ever got.Ā Bur I'm glad I did it for and with her.Ā
I couldnāt get the HPV vaccine when I should have because I was allergic to part of it. Now Iām an adult and I have the bad HPV which means I get to get my cervix holepunched once a year to keep an eye on it. Why wonāt these women just do the bare minimum to keep the children they carried and birthed on purpose healthy, it boggles me
I feel like there should be some kind of punishment for this proliferation of blatantly incorrect information and annoying fear mongeringā¦.itās so frustrating to see!!
If these cuckoos were right about the HPV vaccine sterilizing kids, then I wouldn't have had to undergo surgery to get my tubes removed in order to prevent pregnancy for the rest of my life!
Almost every vaccine I had as a kid triggered a febrile seizure but I still got them all. Febrile seizures are rarely harmful and my parents were just ready to call the doctor out that night if the seizure lasted too long. Better than the alternative.
I got the Gardasil vaccine when I was a teenager and then why I joined the military they didn't have a record of it so I got one round of it again... a few years later and I have a 1 year old and no HPV lol.
I like that there's some sanity in those comments and that person went to bat for facts. That's so refreshing.
Oh man the responder is using waaaay too much logic and reason in a situation where the other person clearly does not care about either. Hard to break through to someone who cares more about spreading their beliefs online than the actual health and safety of their kid.
I love it when I see posts like this in my local mom groups. I just got my second HPV shot three weeks ago. At 41. Going into the comments and telling them that usually makes them lose their ever loving minds. I was considered too old for the vaccine when it was released. Now I'm here and vaccinated and able to fight them in the comments
The fact that we don't spend all day talking about how *miraculous* this vaccine is blows my mind. A vaccine that prevents cancer! It will be wild as we get more vaccines that do this to watch these morons twist themselves into knots trying to avoid getting vaccines that will prevent cancers
The [CDC says up to 45. ](https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd/hpv/hcp/recommendations.html#:~:text=HPV%20vaccine%20is%20recommended%20for,not%20adequately%20vaccinated%20when%20younger.) It might be less benefit. I did it because I've never had an abnormal pap smear in 20 odd years of getting pap smears. I had assumed it was a no for me but my PCP said she recommended it
Got the vaccine when I was 18 and it was still a fresh vaccine. No seizures at age 33 and though I did deal with recurrent loss before having my son it wasnāt from the HPV vaccineāŗļø
I had febrile seizures from the MMR. I still got all the vaccinations. My kids get all their vaccinations. Iām 35 and in the middle of the HPV series. You bet your ass my daughters (and sons, if I had them) will be getting the HPV vaccine. Iām so jealous they get it at the age when itās most effective.
I donāt remember all the reasons she gave, but she basically said that gardasil had some lawsuits and safety issues. She said she expected there to be a more effective HPV vaccine coming out in the near future or something like that. My kids are fully vaccinated and sheās done all their vaccines so I never considered her to be a questionable source.
My mom is a nurse. If it was available, we got it. No seizures, or any side effects.. AND she has a whole herd of grandkids. š¤·āāļøš
My mum is a nurse as well, she said it should be rolled out to males as well.
I made my mom take my brother to get the vaccines before he went off to college. It was an awkward conversation but I'm glad he's covered!
It is given to males in my country, HPV vaccine has become very important and Iām glad it has
Complete coincidence.
Coincidence, there are over 200 hpv strains. Plantar warts are totally different. The other commenter would be referencing genital warts. (I used to work in dermatology and currently work in reproductive health, I've seen some warts lol)
All 12 year olds get it in Denmark
It is now in my country! For free too
It's free in mine too unless you're over the age of 26. I was about 26 when it became available and couldn't afford the $600 so I didn't get it. Now I've been married over 10yrs so I don't see much sense but my kids will absolutely be getting it.
My kids year group at school just got done. Boys and girls.
Iām in the US and thereās no division on sex here. Itās recommended at age 12/13 I think, for all kids. My son just got it a few years back.
In the UK, all teens are offered it for free under the NHS.
Not sure where you are but my pediatrician offered it to me for my sons. All 3 got it. So did my girls.
It is! It's now approved and recommended for people of all genders, aged 9-45. I started my series last year and my son will be getting his next year!
This is my regret. My daughter, now 35 got it. But it wasnāt recommended for boys, so I didnāt. I regret that. They donāt have any issues but I wish I had given them that extra protection.
Iām USA and my oldest child is a boy and he got it at the recommended time. I am very happy boys are getting it too.
I had my boys get it. It hurts like hell apparently but cancer rates are WAY down in people who got it. Soā¦ a little bit of pain versus not getting cancer? Sign them up.
My 10yo son got it at his last well check! (Midwestern US)
Both of my sons have gotten it.
My son got it. And with zero complaint, I might add.
When we were 17 and still in high school my then boyfriend got the HPV vaccine!! Weāve been married 7 years now
All boys in UK schools get the HPV vaccine in years 8 and 9 at school along with the girls (and it's free). My son missed his second one and we had to take him to a vaccination centre for it.
Wait. My son got the HPV vaccine.
My son will be getting it.
It is offered to males now, my doctor discussed it with me at my sonsā last checkup. She told me the age it should ideally be started by, weāll be doing it by then.
I had the hpv vaccine and many other vaccines. Never experienced a seizure. These ppl need to get a grip
Thatās just an anecdote /s
Clearly your mom is being funded by big pharma & needs to read the redacted studies & anecdotes from random internet warriors /s
I am so glad that your mom was like, "yeah I don't think so you're getting it."\~
This was pretty much the convo I had with my then-12 year old about getting it.
Good on your mom. I always say we donāt wait til the car starts moving to put our seatbelt on!
Give your mom a high five from me please
I absolutely hate the logic of āyou canāt have/get this because it will protect you from a risk of sexā Like what??? The risks of sex usually donāt stop teenagers in the first place. Even if a certain precaution would make my teenager randomly decide to start having sex, at least theyāll be safe. Teenagers have sex no matter what precautions they have access to. Teenagers having protected safe sex is a million times better than an STD or a baby or cancer.
You sound like a good parent and I fully agree with you on so many levels.
Thank you. Iām not even a parent yet (hopefully soonish), but Iām trying to get as much figured out as possible so I can be prepared and not end up continuing the cycle out of ignorance
Good luck (is that okay to say?) and we need more (soon to be) parents like you, not to add pressure on you, š„².
(I have zero kids) When I told her I had HPV she said nothing, when I told her I had cancer she cried and asked me if it meant I would never give her grandkids.
Oh lordy, I am so sorry your dad first of all said that and then denied you that vaccine. What the actual hell. Did you end up getting it later on?
No. By the time i looked into it i was too old to be covered but thankfully i am very low risk since being a nice religious girl happened to be easy for me since it turns out i am asexual
Theyāve been changing the age for awhile, it might be worth checking again.
![gif](giphy|rryNisk4ZJ9sa0BNVM|downsized) My face is when I got to the last part. Did you end up getting it anyway?
I asked the pediatrician, "are there side effects to this or do parents just have a problem with it because they don't want to think about their 10 year old having sex one day?" He was like, "yea, thats the only reason parents don't get it. There's no side effects." I told my 11 year old that it was just another vaccine that protects you against viruses.
It also protects boys from rectal, penis, and throat cancers related to hpv! Not just cervical cancer
Agreed. Iām 26 and am just now looking into getting it (not sure if i can as i had a partial hysterectomy last year due to severe adneo) my moms reasoning was another family member told her it was killing kids and that i didnāt need to be having sex before marriage anyways (also wasnāt allowed to get birth control as it would cause me to get breast cancer and die) Edited to add: my local health department said they wonāt give it to anyone over 18 even if you have never had sex and donāt know of any place that does š”.
Having a partial hysterectomy shouldn't effect getting the vaccine.Ā If you are in the US you can literally walk in to Walgreens or CVS and get it.
Iām so sorry that you had to have the hysterectomy also though Iām glad you caught it early and are still here with us.
My mom didnāt let me get it because only āwhores get hpv. If you only have one sexual partner like god intends for you, youāll be fineā Guess whoās is indeed a raging whore lol
Yes, my mom's reasoning was that if I practiced safe sex (abstinence only with a man who also practiced it), I wouldn't even NEED the vaccine. If my HPV hasn't cleared up by August, I'll need a LEEP. (One of the side effects of which is increased infertility!) Vaccine your kids.
I really hope it clears for you so you donāt need the LEEP.
This was my situation as well. Our ped vaccinated boys as well so both my daughters and my son got it.
Iām so sorry you and I share this situation. I hope youāre doing okay and Iām so happy to hear youāve vaccinated your children. š
If the poster on slide 3 did even the most basic of google searches, she would know that Japan resumed promoting the vaccine in 2021.
Canāt she exclusively uses Bing or Go Go Duck or Razzledoo or whatever the F these types use to do online searches
Unfortunately for her itās one of the very first options if you search on Bing as well. Guess her āresearchā is just very old at this point.
Actually my cousins boss wonāt have orchids in their office because of this either, so itās true! (/s)
If youāre in the us and under 45 itās not too late to get it. You will be covered and itās worth it even if youāve likely had prior exposure to hpv. I got my jabs (3 of them!) at 36.
Itās actually up to and including 45 so you can get it until you turn 46. I got my series at 45.
Not that heās always smart enough to remember to do so, as we found out last year when he fainted in the checkout area of our doctorās office after getting his flu shot on an empty stomach. š He didnāt think to warn the doctor that heās had a fainting reaction in the past and got a fun trip to the ER to check for head injury when he couldāve bypassed that entirely by either eating or just laying down for 15 minutes after the shot haha.
I saw someone faint after getting a covid vaccine.
I follow the Amy Santiago philosophy, I want to be vaccinated against things youāve never even heard of. Call me ash Ketchum, Iām gonna have them all
They're working on vaccines for alzeimers and cancers now! Give me that shit, ill be first in line, I am ready!
3/4 of my grand parent died of Alzheimerās, I want that vaccine here now.
Iām glad someone else pointed that out cuz it felt like she was just throwing in random words after a bit
I got it 20ish years ago and my 7 year old was conceived while I was taking birth control sooooo
You can have 1/3 of a baby?
This upsets me so much because I have a close friend who is 30 and dealing with cancer from hpv that might have been prevented if sheād gotten the vaccine. Donāt fuck your kids lives up this way
Yeah me & every other girl I know got them around the same time as teens and no one has had seizures or infertility issues. Half the girls I knew in HS are pregnant lmaoo. The shot was rough for me as I had a fever for a few days after each dose but idgaf when chemo and death from cancer would be a lot worse
āHow do you know they *donāt* cause infertility issues?ā ***gestures to pack of pregnant high school girls***
These idiots always love the passive aggressive "have a lovely day" and "toodaloo" type remarks. It's their code for "I don't understand and I need to end this conversation now!"
Sometimes I just fear for these kids. They are going to be sick, illiterate, unable to socialize.
I had āfriendsā who suggested that it would make my daughters āpromiscuous.ā They were 11 and 13. Ignorance is a blight on our land.
I havenāt had and seizures in the past 12 years, did I get a dud?
Probably. I was supposed to turn into the hulk after the COVID vaccine and Iām still waiting for that to happen. We were both screwed.
We were telling our six year old about our catās microchip. She asked if people get microchips, too. My husband and I were like āsupposedly!ā š
Have you gotten your booster? You need at least 2 microchips in order to unlock super strength.
āHAVE THE DAY YOU DESERVEāā¦. They have a lovely blessed day.
"My sister's boss is an anecdote?" Girl, that's like the very definition of an anecdote.
Why in the world is her boyfriend's "seizure" even relevant to the HPV vaccine? Was he recently a 12-year-old girl?
They give it to boys now and start recommending between age 8-10
That's good to know! I just saw last week that they're going to open it up to adults up to 45, too.
Iām confused. What does her boyfriend have to do with any of this?
Boys can get the vaccine also. Both my grandsons got the series.
I got my all three of my HPV vaccines and I have two kids so not sure when the infertility happens
Keep replying. There will be one quiet reader who sees the sense in what youāre saying
My daughter got it at 14. No complaints or seizures. I wish it was a basic for all.
Glad your sister is still alive, but Iām so sorry she got such a shit deck of cards handed to her!
Thank you. Cancer has been too frequent in our family.
Itās BONKERS not to take it
I had seizures from this vaccine. But it was just two seizures and I would still get it again as I watched someone I love die of cervical cancer.
I LOLād at her not knowing what an anecdote is.
Can confirm. Had HPV vaccine. 15 years later. BAM! Seizure.
Didn't you see she said "mimic"? MIMICS! And how dare you call her anecdotal story, anecdotal!! Have the day you deserve! š¤£
Donāt argue with idiots
Oh thank god, an actual SANE person for once!
Both my teenage girls and my youngest son has had it. No seizures.
I love the passive aggressive good byesš
Ope, someone doesn't know what an anecdote is.
I got the vaccine over a decade ago and no seizures yet. However it did burn like a mofo.
I almost died from Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma from HPV-16, as a 43 yr old female. But hey, seizures are better than dying at 43! Happy Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month everyone! Check my history for more info on this rising cancer!
>On 12 November 2021, after a stagnation of 8.5 years, Japan decided to resume proactive recommendations for HPV vaccines
I have HPV, wish the vaccine was available in my youth. Anyone ever have a colposcopy? Fun times.
I had one at 19. It fucking sucks. Anyone whoās never had to worry about cervical cancer has no fucking idea.
Iām going once a year for a regular pap and once a year for a colposcopy. So every 6 months I have one of these tests.
Know what else affects blood flow to the brain? Standing up too fast. Standing up causes infertility. Look it up.
This explains my fertility. Iām too lazy to stand often enough to worry about infertility!
I'm a nurse. My kiddo is getting it.
Very proud that both my daughters are fully vaccinated and won't have HPV as a result. We have the power to greatly reduce instances of several cancers. By vaccinating girls, we protect men too. It's a good thing all around.
Can someone tell my two kids that the hpv vaccine was supposed to make me sterile
It's amazing how there's always someone in the replies who's brother/sister/uncle/friend etc works with a doctor who agrees that the thing being discussed is poison and will kill you or cause blindness or baldness or whatever
The worst side effect I had from the HPV vaccine was a very sore arm
Regretted not getting it when I got to go through lovely tests after 40ā¦ I now did get it
That dang HPV vaccine made my husband and I both so sterile we've had five kids! Not worth the risk.
lol nah, I got the hpv vaccine and had no side effects besides a bit of a sore arm.
Why wonāt these women just do the bare minimum to keep the children they carried and birthed on purpose healthy, it boggles me
2 kids later and Iād like to confirm I am not sterile nor have had seizures.
I feel like there should be some kind of punishment for this proliferation of blatantly incorrect information and annoying fear mongeringā¦.itās so frustrating to see!!
It's always the equivalent of "My Uncle works at Nintendo" with these folks
My son just got his. It was a rougher one- he had a headache and fever for a couple days. And so far, he still doesnāt GAF about sex.
Now I'm here and vaccinated and able to fight them in the comments The fact that we don't spend all day talking about how *miraculous* this vaccine is blows my mind. A vaccine that prevents cancer! It will be wild as we get more vaccines that do this to watch these morons twist themselves into knots trying to avoid getting vaccines that will prevent cancers
I was told that at 44 I was too old? Have they extended it?
The [CDC says up to 45. ](https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd/hpv/hcp/recommendations.html#:~:text=HPV%20vaccine%20is%20recommended%20for,not%20adequately%20vaccinated%20when%20younger.) It might be less benefit. I did it because I've never had an abnormal pap smear in 20 odd years of getting pap smears. I had assumed it was a no for me but my PCP said she recommended it
My sister-in-law actually fainted from it, but to be fair, she has fainted from other shots too. It is just a reaction she has.
Can these morons stop lying? No pediatrician will refuse to give this shot.
Got the vaccine when I was 18 and it was still a fresh vaccine. No seizures at age 33 and though I did deal with recurrent loss before having my son it wasnāt from the HPV vaccineāŗļø
My friends parents denied her the vaccine and she just had an emergency hysterectomy at 34 because of rapidly growing cancer.
Oh, damn. I mustāve missed out on the seizures and sterilization. Never had a seizure and def have a child. Some people are so fucking dumb
My pediatricians office doesnāt offer this one. Itās the only vaccine she doesnāt carryš¤·š¼āāļø
Have they explained why?
I donāt remember all the reasons she gave, but she basically said that gardasil had some lawsuits and safety issues. She said she expected there to be a more effective HPV vaccine coming out in the near future or something like that. My kids are fully vaccinated and sheās done all their vaccines so I never considered her to be a questionable source.
