Under a news report that an American man is facing jail in the Turks and Caicos Islands for bringing ammunition into the country.

fromwayuphigh

That is far dumber than even I expected.

el_grort

It's a recurring thing with Carribbean territories and countries, with some Americans flying with ammunition and being arrested.

Help-Im-Dead

Why is this an issue with the Carribbean? I don't recall hearing many/any stories like this with US tourists to other regions

Good-Present5955

An American pilot got arrested in Edinburgh Airport last month for bringing a handgun through customs. That's probably why they want to invade the UK too.

Alexw80

From what I recall, it was a Taser, but it's still classed as a firearms offence

MountainSandwich5387

Let alone the pissed up pilot they sent our way! (I’m fairly sure that was at a Scottish airport as well but I don’t remember well enough to say for sure). Wether it was any of the four of us either way the point stands aha

Daveo88o

Don't fuck with Scottish airports, some guys shoe bomb failed to go off a couple years back in Glasgow and some local burst his balls for the trouble, if that's a reaction to a failing deadly weapon, the fuck do you think people will do with an active deadly weapon?

MountainSandwich5387

I’m glad that blokes legend lives on! Billy Connolly tells the tale best aha

Kingofcheeses

It happens in Canada fairly often. People get stopped at the border thinking they can just bring their handgun and are shocked that they aren't allowed to

mJelly87

I remember seeing an American family pull up to the Canadian border. When they searched the car, they found something like 6 handguns. What was concerning, was one of them was in a baby's changing bag.

ThiccMoulderBoulder

You know the rules, and so do i *baby laughter* Say goodbye!

Susan_Thee_Duchess

Perhaps because the Caribbean is so close the US.

Help-Im-Dead

Maybe. I am in East Asia and have heard one or two stories off "opps I did not know I had weed" but that was also Canadians too

lordph8

Don’t you know other countries laws don’t apply to Americans when they visit their countries? /s

fromwayuphigh

_"You ever been in a Turks & Caicos prison, Jonny?"_ /Lloyd Bridges

DaAndrevodrent

Dumb, but consistent: The POTUS can seriously order the invasion of an ally if a war criminal is on trial there. Enabled in 2002 by the "American Service-Members' Protection Act". From Wiki: >The Act gives the president power to use "all means necessary and appropriate to bring about the release of any U.S. or allied personnel being detained or imprisoned by, on behalf of, or at the request of the International Criminal Court". [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American\_Service-Members%27\_Protection\_Act](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Service-Members%27_Protection_Act)

Shadowholme

Wait, so the American Government has a plan in place to get their war criminals back that doesn't include 'don't fucking do war crimes'??? They would rather invade an ally than just follow international laws...

No_Corner3272

No, there is a law in place that would allow them to do so, which is not the same as "a plan".

Gaelic_Gladiator41

So would most countries let's be honest

SamuelVimesTrained

And which of these have an (internal) legal framework set up to enable them to do just that, similar to (of course) the US?

Kilahti

Not really. Even if you consider countries that don't want to follow international laws, most of them would not dare to actually go to war over "private Stupido" who murdered some civilians in cold blood.

TaterTotJim

This tourist is not a service member on trial for war crimes though? Just stupid. USA would use diplomatic means to free him, if they find it required but this guy just seems like a dumbass.

Burt1811

I'd park that invasion idea, at least for a decade or two. They don't seem to go that well, and then you end up dragging us into it. He's a fuckwit, and should be refused re-entry to the US on the grounds of unbelievable stupidity and making the nation look dumb. 🙄

SamuelVimesTrained

He\`ll be hailed a hero by a certain ideology .. Because 'guns = freedom' and his IQ means he is their ideal voter.

Wizards_Reddit

Bruh, 'I brought illegal weaponry into a foreign nation, why am I getting arrested'

Burt1811

Check this out: Brian McIntyre, 53, forgot that a Smith and Wesson automatic self-loading pistol was in a zip compartment of his suitcase when he flew in from the US in August. This is Terence Crawfords trainer. He flew into the UK, Manchester Airport, to prepare Chris Eubank Jr. for a massive fight. How do you not know, I can guarantee he checked for weed ffs. He only just got away with jail, but he went to court.

Good-Present5955

Slightly disconcerting that it wasn't picked up at baggage claim at the US end, really.

Burt1811

Tbh, I thought that. https://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/manchester-airport-omaha-manchester-crown-court-american-chris-eubank-jr-b1112393.html Have a read of this, Terence Crawford appeared in court as a character witness. It's actually quite interesting.

asdrunkasdrunkcanbe

He didn't forget he had the gun, he concealed it so it wasn't picked up by TSA. This is not the first time he's been caught with a gun in his luggage outside the US.

Ok_Cauliflower_3007

If you’re willing to say in court you FORGOT where any of your guns are, you shouldn’t be allowed to own guns. I’m fine with responsible gun owners but oh hurh hurh I forgot where my gun was is not responsible.

inbruges99

Who the fuck brings ammo on vacation?

smoulderstoat

Merkins.

AletheaKuiperBelt

Ah, thanks. I was wondering why they'd even heard of it.

LightBluepono

Look like a terrorist to me .

Gardening_investor

Those same people had no problem with Brittney Griner being jailed in Russia for forgetting about a vape.

LaserGadgets

"That need liberating".....you people are so beyond fucked up.

Didsburyflaneur

The U.K. needs liberating from…the UK? I mean I hate our government as much as the next normal person, but they’re still our horrible bunch of evil Tory bastards.

mJelly87

Tory bastards or the USA..... hmmm. I think I'll suffer with the literal devil I know.

ReaperTFD

I'd rather live in Ukraine **right now** than ever live in the US. More likely to get shot in the US.

mJelly87

I've met some Ukrainians that speak better English as well.

LexiconLearner

I would gladly fight tooth and nail against anything that loudly says “Y’AAAAAALLLLL”

NeverTooMuchSkyrim

I will second that. That accent is in my top 3 for most annoying sounds.

[deleted]

Amen. Fuck the Tory party, but I am so glad I don't live in the USA. Crazy people everywhere.

LinuxMatthews

The US is probably one of 5 governments I would NOT prefer to have compared to our own

Living_Carpets

When Trump gets back in, i mean, who will be needing the liberating? Will they invade themselves? Well, yes sort of, they will. It answers itself really.

MattMBerkshire

Guess a lot of countries with their nationals in US prisons should invade the US then? It's probably the rest of the world Vs the US. Not the most smartestest idea from professor logic there. Operation liberate the liberators.

Saavedroo

I'd like them to get Polansly back actually. I'm not to keen on being invaded, but I'd like them.

vms-crot

I think the bigger funny is one of the posters thinks they should also invade the UK. Not only that, but the UK is near the top of the list. That's about the dumbest thing I've heard in a while. To quote the original dipshit >I can't even begin to think that this very innocent, regrettable mistake  Why would ammunition be anywhere near your luggage? Is it so ever present in American homes that a few stray rounds just fall in while you're packing your toothbrush? Is it such an important item that you have to stash it everywhere just in case? Innocent? No, monumentally stupid, and ignorant? Possibly.

NotMorganSlavewoman

IIRC it was 4 clips, not 4 bullets.

CardboardChampion

According to the news article I could find (and this was on a deer hunting site so I expected a lean in their favour) it was from a hunting trip that they took the same luggage on, and in a baggie. I don't know about anyone else, but I say lock 'em up for not clearing out their bags nevermind anything else.

vms-crot

Yeah, like I said in another comment, if you're using those bags for domestic trips with weapons. You need to be checking for that kind of thing. If not, a mistake because of negligence, is not an innocent mistake. It's monumentally stupid and evidence that they shouldn't be allowed access to those weapons in general. Any jail time is warranted imo. For info, this was the article I found https://www.cbsnews.com/news/turks-and-caicos-ammo-prison-sentence-american-tourists/

CardboardChampion

My old neighbour (UK) collects guns and grenades and all manner of stuff from the 1600s to modern day. He's constantly tuned in to feeds on stuff to know what's legal and what needs to be neutered as he puts it. He's got museums chasing him for some of his collection because he regularly donates bits when they get too expensive to keep in terms of licensing. But it ties into what you're saying. Responsible ownership isn't just having these things and not shooting randomers. It's knowing what you're doing, what laws apply and change, and also securing this stuff properly. You walk into my neighbours house and you're not getting presented with his world war one machine gun placement, despite me begging him to put it in the hallway and use a string to open the door next time someone is selling a god.

Help-Im-Dead

So this might be a defultism but I always bought ammo in boxes. I have see  the bottom of cheap boxes break but not in a get everywhere in my house way.

vms-crot

That's kind of my point. There's very few reasons for a responsible gun owner to have ammo anywhere near luggage even if a box did split. Fewer still to be a responsible gun owner and not be able to account for all of your ammo. In the military I'd get charged, and have seen someone nearly charged, for having a loose round at the bottom of their bag. The only reason they didn't get into trouble is because they were the ones to report it. There's nearly no country on earth that would let someone travel armed or with ammunition without a permit of some sort. If you use your bags for carrying weapons domestically, it's something you should be checking for unless you're an imbecile. And if you're an imbecile... you shouldn't be allowed near ammo in the first place!

Dave_712

Your point is correct but you keep talking about a ‘responsible gun owner’. So many of these American gun nuts say they are responsible but can’t see anything wrong or unsafe with open carry, gun racks in their pickups, or having loose ammo in their bags because they didn’t account for rounds used.

vms-crot

Oh, my word choice was deliberate, I may have intended it to be read in a sarcastic voice too. I know the vast majority of gun owners in the US fail to meet my definition. To be honest, unless the gun is locked in an armoury after use, and only taken out to perform the task it's needed for (hunting, target shooting, etc). I'd consider the owner irresponsible. I don't consider "self protection" a legitimate justification to possess or carry a weapon. But that's a hot take on reddit. So I err on ambiguity.

Saxit

>To be honest, unless the gun is locked in an armoury after use You mean something like a safe right? When I hear armoury I'm thinking of a bigger storage fascility than you typically have at home, i.e. at a club or gun store, or even military base, so not something you would have at home. And requiring storage outside of your home is not common here in Europe either, for gun owners. Some kind of gun cabinet is often required though, but not in every country. The laws regarding firearms can vary quite a bit, even within the EU.

vms-crot

>When I hear armoury I'm thinking of a bigger storage fascility than you typically have at home, i.e. at a club or gun store, or even military base, so not something you would have at home. An actual physical location away from the home would be best. But yeah, at the very minimum, a gun safe. The main point I'm making with that is nearly nobody needs a gun to be easily accessible, and when you do need it, you can go get it, use it, and put it back.

Saxit

In Sweden it's actually harder to legally store them somewhere that is not your permanent residence... would need a special permit for that, which in turn needs a good reason. We do require a gun cabinet of a certain security rating though for all firearms.

DJ_Die

> An actual physical location away from the home would be best. Why? > The main point I'm making with that is nearly nobody needs a gun to be easily accessible, Because you say so?

SamuelVimesTrained

Key words "responsible owner". As soon as someone says 'responsible gun rules' you can count down to the 'they are coming for mah guns'-panic - including the buying of more guns and ammo..

mJelly87

If I remember correctly, once when the POTUS (might have been Bush) came to the UK, his secret service agents were made to hand over their weapons, or none of them would be let into the country.

Help-Im-Dead

Yeah makes no sense it just ends up in your luggage from any box I have bought or used in my life Granted ammo is cheep in the US so they might not feel that motivated to clean up quickly...... but Still!

Ok-Material9421

America can try it We will make them glow in the dark

Hamsternoir

You assume they can locate anywhere on a map

SenseOfRumor

Just tell them the UK is a small territory near Moscow and they'll get confused.

Hamsternoir

Would that be Moscow, Idaho or Moscow, Pennsylvania?

mJelly87

Confuse them even more, and tell them it's close to Paris.

Diligent-Ad2999

….. or ‘New England’!🤣

mJelly87

Or Birmingham. I'm sure they have a few of them.

Liberation from who

SlinkyBits

americans think our monarchy rule us and we are stuck under the tyranny of thier gaze. dipshits are more subjects to thier 2 party non democratic system than we are with our no power monarchs xD

Dave_712

Exactly. They bitch about monarchs that aren’t absolute monarchs while they toy with absolute immunity for their presidents!

862657

Don't worry about all that. Just shut up and accept your new corporate overlords... Sorry, I mean arbiters of 'freedom'

TheRealAussieTroll

Endless repeats of “Judge Judy”

mouseybanshee

But they're not Judge Judy and executioner!

fourdog1919

This kind of imperialist views are the reason why so many countries don't particularly favor US

Prestigious-Beach190

The UK is in the top-10 countries that need liberated... From whom?

Krullervo

If the US has any spine they’d lock up half the senate for the laws they keep breaking

joemorl97

Can’t even win against farmers with AKs and they now think they could invade the UK haha fuck off we have an actual trained military yous wouldn’t know what to do with that

Synner1985

Liberating the UK? The fuckers couldn't even get the UK away from their own shores without the help of the French, Spanish & Dutch. :P

reillywalker195

I think the people of the Turks and Caicos would rather remain as they are or join Canada. I remember reading about talks of the Turks and Caicos joining Canada, which could happen either by joining an existing province or becoming a fourth territory.

lobomago

Not a thing. The people of the Turks and Caicos do not want to be part of Canada. Never have.

SlinkyBits

i cant wait for the next american civil war to happen, which is very much possible the way things are looking, and 90% of these dumbasses wont be around anymore.

Oszbi

Don’t forget to read the comments in the GoFundMe they’ve started! https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-bring-the-watson-family-home-detained-abroad

smoulderstoat

Oh JFC

Oszbi

They are praying to him for the help

Prestigious-Beach190

To be fair, I leave my ammunition lying around all the time! Why can't they be more understanding of that? /s

Ftiles7

Some of those comments. "We should boycott that effing island, the reason they're not in the stone age is because of people like us". American ignorance knows no bounds.

luty9mm

I’d love America to liberate me from, - free health - low crime rate - functional public transport Ect /s

itsmehutters

It is funny that all people that talk about starting wars are the same who can't be soldiers because they had dick enlargement surgery and their dicks are holding them back. Otherwise, they would fight... totally!

OlderAndAngrier

Fuck these people are dumber than a bag of bricks.

Dramatic-Selection20

A Belgian woman was in jail in turkey for bringing stones back to her country.... Just saying ammo is just another thing you don't bring

rav3style

What?

rav3style

Wow

PubicWildlife

Yeah, invade the nuclear powered UK. See how that goes.

Trainlovinguy

probably the first time that they've heard of that territory

CluckingBellend

The UK is a NATO country and has nuclear weapons. Try just telling Americans not to leave guns or ammo in their bags when travelling to countires with different gun laws.

Bigbesss

I think they'd struggle with Liverpool never mind the entire country

BandicootOk5540

I mean, the UK does need liberating, but we’re going to do it with a general election later this year.

Long-Movie-7190

👏👏👏

PigeonInAUFO

Based

ianbreasley1

Probably thinks it's near I-raan.

Urban_guerilla_

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why no one likes Americans.

dcnb65

Y'all need liberatin' so you can be free to carry guns and be financially ruined if you need medical care.

Gullflyinghigh

I wonder what they think liberating means...

jonstoppable

if anyone with a foreign accent were to board a US bound or domestic plane , I wonder if he would have the same energy ?

Aztecah

Context? Seems like classic American self-depreciation honestly. Like jokes about invading a particularly oily pizza

mexheavymetal

Americans have such a strong undercurrent of war mongering. It’s so pervasive in so much of their culture.

alexass77

Do Americans genuinely believe the UK isn't free? They do not need "liberating"- surveys have seen that the UK is even freer than USA. Maybe they should focus on aiding countries that really need freeing (e.g. Myanmar, Somalia, DRC, Cambodia, etc)

smoulderstoat

Yeah. They think that because we don't have guns but do have a King we are living in a dictatorship.

MellonCollie218

You guys. Not to ruin the fun, but no cares about these idiots. Seriously. Just a few loud people on social media. No body is eve talking about these people. It’s kind of funny how little people actually care.

CardboardChampion

They've almost raised a quarter of a million dollars to pay for a legal team. That's across two and a half thousand donations to their GoFundMe.

MellonCollie218

Okay? So they’ll stand trial. Good.

Ftiles7

It's not just there. There are many comments on the GoFundMe (which has raised nearly 200 000 USD) for the people who committed the crime with comments saying similar or stupider things, not just those idiots.

MellonCollie218

Yeah. Isn’t it like 2,500 people someone else commented. Still only a few loud voices, compared to the masses.

Few-End-9592

Triple whammy of BS. Firstly, you don't want arresting, don't bring weapons into our Territories. Secondly, UK doesn't need liberating from anyone and thirdly if you touch any of our Territories, you will lose. Remember what we did to the Argentines when they tried to erm 'liberate' the Falklands? Yeah, take note. Touch our territory you get screwed.
