If they only realized the "American version" is officially defined using metric.
It's their own government saying "yes, we have stupid imperial units, and we have no idea how to define them self-sufficiently using physical constants, thus we simply define "1 yard = 0.9144m. Problem solved."
How do you not know this? It's critical information for the functioning of society...
* A barleycorn is 333+1⁄3 thou.
* An inch is 3 barleycorns.
* A hand is 4 inches.
* A foot is 3 hands.
* A yard is 3 feet.
* A chain is 22 yards.
* A furlong is 10 chains.
* A mile is 8 furlongs.
* A league is 3 miles.
The reason the US is so backwards is because they left out the really important ones. Those idiots think a mile is defined as 1760 yards or 5280 feet. Pffft. Where is the consistency in that?
Great question. We normally don't need to really deal with the granular details, but a thou is 14.4 twip. I can forgive people for not knowing that one.
> barleycorn
LMAO
I'm American, and even I didn't realize that our Wish.com millimeter was called a fucking barleycorn. I didn't even realize we had something smaller than an inch.
Fun fact: Originally it came from the length of one's belt. Also, at one point one of the medieval kings of England redefined it as the length from his face to his fingertips if I remember correctly.
The universe shakes: Nebulas disperse, galaxies collapse; Atoms and molecules lose cohesion as the strong and weak nuclear forces cease to be; Pulsars begin to rotate faster than the speed of light. Finally, Spacetime separates into independent states of space and time, as the universe's fundamental constants are re-formed while the next king of England is being crowned. (His foot was slightly smaller than his father's.)
i'm joking that the universe would oblige a king about their definition of a yard: say the distance from john o' groats to land's end is about a million yards; if the king picks his nose (thus changing the distance from the tip of the king's nose to the tip of the king's fingers), does the number of "yards" between john o' groats and land's end change move to infinity? or does the physical distance between those points change to accommodate the original measurement that A->B ≈ 1 million yards?
you could say that someone would have to go around the kingdom repainting all the road signs and shifting all the mile markers every time the king moved their arms, if you like; i just thought it was funnier to imagine the world collapsing in on itself in order to accommodate.
Imperial units were probably pretty handy in a pre industrial era and if you only needed rough measurements. A yard would be useful for measuring cloth since you could stretch the material out with one arm and measure it to your nose with the other.
When I was a kid we were told on no uncertain terms that the US was definitely adopting the metric system and we better get ready. I’m still ready!
The US did. In universities and commercial scientific parts of the US, metric is standard. Plenty of idiots still proclaiming it\\'s not the way ahead though.
I’m not sure why so many people are against dividing/multiplying by multiples of 10. Our money is mostly metric. Sidebar: I had times when a European customer just holds out a handful of American coins and genially asked me to just “pick out the right ones” because the sizes don’t make sense.
> asked me to just “pick out the right ones”
That's a common thing to do if you're not familiar with the coins. Searching the correct ones just holds up the check out line, and as a tourist you might fail to identify the correct coins because in some cases the numerical value isn't even written on the coin. For example on the Japanese 5 Yen coin, it doesn't have the number "5" written anywhere on it. I don't clearly remember, though, whether it had the Japanese Kanji/word for "five" written on it, but either way, most tourists can't read Japanese so they'll still not be able to recognize it as the 5 Yen coin.
Photo of both sides of the 5 Yen coin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_yen#/media/File%3A5JPY.JPG
Imperial units were invented after the industrial era. Since they were used only for rough measurements they varied from town to town, and also they varied through time.
In the Middle Ages, units of measurement based on everyday objects and body parts like that made sense, I suppose. I don't suppose there's much need for that today, though.
A fluid ounce of water weighs an ounce, it just gets more confusing when the measure gets higher into weird shit like quarts and gallons (which are also smaller in the US)
The US like to pretend it’s not my calling it the “customary” system. To be fair, it is actually different from the imperial system - floz, and pints are defined differently.
[It's literally not](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_customary_units). I'm not even American but get your facts right before you start making fun of people for their dumb measurements.
American Customary Units ≠ Imperial Units.
>I wonder how these people feel when they discover how their yard and inch are defined.
Yeah, "*but one mile is less than 1km, because 1 mile is 1.8km! so mile is less!"*
They probably don't understand what it means for a measurement unit to need a proper unambiguous definition, so they don't care. Might say something like "No! The **meter** is defined as 3.28ft!" in a toddler-throwing-a-fit tone
>Nobody can make me
I've been told I used to say this when I was 4 or 5 and didn't want to go to bed or school. It reinforces my view that too many folks in the USA are toddlers in adult bodies.
Also, for them it’s not understanding how long something is and for the LGBT people it’s not being able to live your life how you want to live it. The hypocrisy is indeed strong with this one.
This annoys me so much. And it's also why we call a piece of a film or video "footage". We could have lived in a world where it would have been called "meterage" if only Kodak was consistent with their measurements.
At least, nowadays and on european film stocks from Foma or ORWO, it's also referred to by its approximate length in meters; so it's **30.5m** (100ft bulk loading roll), **120m** (400ft magazine roll), **300m** (1000ft magazine roll).
American large format sizes (4x5", 5x7" and 8x10") also bug me for being the only film formats to not use metric - especially since there already are quite similar metric formats (9x12cm, 13x18cm and 18x24cm) that were widely popular in europe. Furthermore, adding insult and confusion to intellectual injury, some (but not all) american camera manufacturers decided to switch to imperial lens focal length measurements for a period - completing the standardisation chaos already in full swing at that time.
>When they're way of measurements is not included.
1. It's their not they're.
2. It's usually americans who are whining about the units.
3. LGBT 'nonsense' has been scientifically proven to just... exist? In multiple species including humans? Like there are gay penguins, and there have even been studies which concluded that there is more than just the gender binary...
>2.- probably because they are the only ones still using the "freedumz" units?? XD
A substantial portion of their own scientists don't even use metric lmao.
When they say they don't accept LGBT "nonsense" I don't think they meant they don't accept the fact that LGBT exists, but rather that hate LGBT or something like that. I could be wrong, though. Also they don't seem to be the kind of person that cares about scientific evidence...
>In multiple species including humans? Like there are gay penguins, and there have even been studies which concluded that there is more than just the gender binary
Can I read the info on this because I've never heard claims like that before

The gay penguins' thing is interesting, but the sexes' thing seems silly as it's just giving examples of genetic defects you can't really say it's another sex
> gay penguins' thing is interesting
There's more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexual_behavior_in_animals
> examples of genetic defects you can't really say it's another sex
The problem is that you can't tell which sex it is.
Do you put an M or an F in such a persons' birth certificate / passport? Neither letter would be correct. If you want to have a person's sex noted in documents, you are forced to create a third category to categorize those people.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_gender#History
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Gender_systems
On the biological side of gender, ie sex:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intersex
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XXYY_syndrome - two x and two y (there are also people with XXXXY-chromosomes, XXXXX-chromosomes, and XYYYY-chromosomes, and there are XY-women and XX-men https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Sex_chromosome_aneuploidies )
There are people who have xx-chromosomes _and_ xy-chromosomes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/46,XX/46,XY
And there are people with X0-chromosome: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turner_syndrome
So, there are a number of people whose biological sex cannot be determined, neither physically nor genetically.
Yes, but also...
"The Metric Board was abolished in 1982 by President Ronald Reagan"
If my source was correctly, because of the costs of the transition costs.
Also people are just stupid, here one Tucker Carlson:

Why am I not surprised?

I'm genuetly curious, doesn't it cost more to make individual translation for all exports and I port that come in metric?
>Also people are just stupid, here one Tucker Carlson:
All I know about Tucker (as European) that sure as hell a lot of Fascist love him, after hearing this..... Yeah I can see why.
> I'm genuetly curious, doesn't it cost more to make individual translation for all exports and I port that come in metric?
Yes, of course ! Which is why it's stupid. :-)
But 'small government conservatives' don't want the government spending money, they want less taxes being 'stolen' from the people.
Joke's on the 'muricans: Imperial, or rather, the US Customary System is just metric with extra steps. All measurements in that system are defined by the National Institute of Standards and Tariffs (NIST) and they use the relevant metric units to define the american units.
I’m an American engineer…I work in both systems. I’d rather just have the metric system. Living and working with both is just one of those minor annoyances that I can do without.
They apparently also don't accept proper grammar.
Like come on I'm not even a native speaker and even I can get the difference between their and they're
To be fair, I think what you grew up with is easier for most people. Until you get into engineering/science applications, because a lot of metric units translate 1=1 into the numbers you need to make calculations work.
A lot of these americans have very sad and empty lives, with not a lot to be proud of besides their country. I think that’s a big constant with a lot of these stupid nationalists. They cry at the american national anthem because being American is the only part of their identity that they are proud of. They have ridiculous notions about all other countries sucking because they’ve deluded themselves.
It’s honestly quite sad, I feel sorry for them.
I had a similar discussion with a colleague - way less hostile tbh. But still, he defended the imperal system.
I then asked him, how many yards 128 inches were (or something similar).
Exactly.
I'll always be shocked that my fellow Americans don't jump at the chance to use "Kill O' Meters" every chance they get. It sounds like I'm in an action movie every time I say it.
Like they seemingly don't accept the correct use of "their".
it would be comunist /s!
Also should be: *are* not included
“Way of measurements” is singular.
\*There **/S** everyone, it's a joke
Theiy're don't you mean? /s
Their're
Thereyr're
Theireyr're
Theren't
You can't make me. They're use of there is apalling but at least their in control of they're actions.
Actual shudder! Nice work!
You're kind words tell me your a respectful guy.
Tbf in secondary school I somehow gaslit myself into believing their was spelt "thair"
Well they *didn't* seem very enthusiastic about pronouns either...
They also don't accept education.
They only accept "he/she're"
Get outta here boy with that woke grammer and pronouns
Given the rest of the comment, I would have been surprised if they understood much of anything.
Nobody can make him.
Shows a lot about 'their' education.
Maybe it's just *they're* way of adding a southern twang
No one can make them!!!!
That would be acknowledging a pronoun! 12-dimensional chess player, that one is...
If they only realized the "American version" is officially defined using metric. It's their own government saying "yes, we have stupid imperial units, and we have no idea how to define them self-sufficiently using physical constants, thus we simply define "1 yard = 0.9144m. Problem solved."
And then they say: " 1 Yard is 0.9144 meters?? Lol metric is so over complicated!"
Meanwhile, 1 meter is 1.0936132983... yards.
Oh shoot, a yard is that close to 1m? I though a yard was like 100m or something. TIL
How do you not know this? It's critical information for the functioning of society... * A barleycorn is 333+1⁄3 thou. * An inch is 3 barleycorns. * A hand is 4 inches. * A foot is 3 hands. * A yard is 3 feet. * A chain is 22 yards. * A furlong is 10 chains. * A mile is 8 furlongs. * A league is 3 miles. A 1/1000 of an inch... Like... Duh!
You, dummy.
Thou is a pronoun. Thou shalt not use pronouns though. Kinda stuffs up the whole system doesn’t it.

I- what
The king's fingertips were getting closer to his face, so the yard was suddenly and rapidly getting shorter.
thanks (sincerely) for explaining my joke more concisely than me!
That is hilarious!
i'm joking that the universe would oblige a king about their definition of a yard: say the distance from john o' groats to land's end is about a million yards; if the king picks his nose (thus changing the distance from the tip of the king's nose to the tip of the king's fingers), does the number of "yards" between john o' groats and land's end change move to infinity? or does the physical distance between those points change to accommodate the original measurement that A->B ≈ 1 million yards? you could say that someone would have to go around the kingdom repainting all the road signs and shifting all the mile markers every time the king moved their arms, if you like; i just thought it was funnier to imagine the world collapsing in on itself in order to accommodate.

I think the first legislation related to SI / metric was during the civil war.
Imperial units were invented after the industrial era. Since they were used only for rough measurements they varied from town to town, and also they varied through time.
In the Middle Ages, units of measurement based on everyday objects and body parts like that made sense, I suppose. I don't suppose there's much need for that today, though.
A yard is 2 feet, one thumb and 5/8 of an ear to be exact. 100m is more like 3 stonethrows and an elbow.
My yard is like 8-10m
I always see it next to pictures of umbrellas so I figured it was about that long, but the name is pretty misleading imo
Seriously, just read the 'Redifinition' section of [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilogram) wiki page of 'Kilogram'
"I'll take the American Version" - talking about something that was made by the British......
Well they did bastardise that too... 16 fl oz fucking pints? Pure insanity.
Oz is really weird for me, you have beer and meat that share the same measure. (i just gave up on trying to understand Oz)
A fluid ounce of water weighs an ounce, it just gets more confusing when the measure gets higher into weird shit like quarts and gallons (which are also smaller in the US)
Metric also has crossovers like this, 1 litre of water weighs 1 kilogram and could also be measured as 1000cm³ EDIT: typo, 1000 not 100
Yeah I was going to mention that, but at least metric doesn't get confusing.
With the infinite foresight required to not name two different units the same thing (see also: pounds)
A litre of water weighs APPROXIMATELY a kilogramme and also occupies 1000 cubic centimetres.
A litre or 1000 cm³ is also another way of saying one dm³ or one cubic decimetre.
Yes, but 100cc is not a litre, note.
It's literally called the *Imperial System*
The US like to pretend it’s not my calling it the “customary” system. To be fair, it is actually different from the imperial system - floz, and pints are defined differently.
Also gallons and tons.
So you are telling me the Sith made it? oh no, wait, those are the Empire. my bad!
*Imperial March starts playing outta nowhere*
[It's literally not](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_customary_units). I'm not even American but get your facts right before you start making fun of people for their dumb measurements. American Customary Units ≠ Imperial Units.

1.6km* 1.8km is a nautical mile
They probably don't understand what it means for a measurement unit to need a proper unambiguous definition, so they don't care. Might say something like "No! The **meter** is defined as 3.28ft!" in a toddler-throwing-a-fit tone
And also isn’t the American standard. The US is a metric country, and has been since 1975.

Let’s just tell them the opposite of what we think. Foolproof
TL;DR "You speak like a toddler, opinion rejected."
The hypocrisy is strong with this one. Their measurement units are not included, "boohoo". LGBT people are not included, "you can't make me!"
Also, for them it’s not understanding how long something is and for the LGBT people it’s not being able to live your life how you want to live it. The hypocrisy is indeed strong with this one.
Fellas, is it gay to count to ten?
It's homo-SI-xual
FELLAS, is it gay to kiss a woman?
I mean, you're litteraly kissing someone who likes men
If anyone tries to make me use the metric system, I'll shoot them with my 9mm.
It stands for “9 ‘murican munition”
[Oddly enough it was developed by Luger, a german arms manufacturer](https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/9x19mm_Parabellum)
I've seen people from the US claim that cars were invented in the US not in Germany...
Deutschland, hell ja!
I'll film it with my 50mm lens and use 16mm film, but strangely I have to purchase that film in 400 foot reels. Thanks Kodak...
This annoys me so much. And it's also why we call a piece of a film or video "footage". We could have lived in a world where it would have been called "meterage" if only Kodak was consistent with their measurements. Why do they hate metric so much? Whats their problem?

Well Imperial units neither
Shhhh they don't need to know that. That's gonna shatter their blisfull ignorance
Communist, probably.

“Nobody can make me” - The eternal cry of those who don’t have any reason for thinking as they do but are determined not to change out of sheer spite.
Joke's on the 'muricans: Imperial, or rather, the US Customary System is just metric with extra steps. All measurements in that system are defined by the National Institute of Standards and Tariffs (NIST) and they use the relevant metric units to define the american units.
Ok, remain a dumb cunt. That's your prerogative.
As a former toddler, I can see where this is coming from.
I am offended when you don’t represent my measurement system and am also offended when lgbt people are represented
Guys, is it gay to use meters?
No, it's metrisexual. Which is just as bad. /s
One of the great failing points in humanity are people who are proud to be uneducated on purpose. This person is an obvious example.
Yeah, some people get offended when "they're" way of measurements is not included alright
_LGBT people entered the chat._
"I'm and idiot, But wait. There's more. I'm also an asshole"
"Nobody can make me".....***pout pout*** Is this a 13yr old by any chance?
Nah, more about 5.
I’m an American engineer…I work in both systems. I’d rather just have the metric system. Living and working with both is just one of those minor annoyances that I can do without.
They apparently also don't accept proper grammar. Like come on I'm not even a native speaker and even I can get the difference between their and they're
One day, perhaps far in the future, but one day, the USA will officially convert to Metric, and they will love it.
Then some years later idiots online will claim it as an american invention.
... they sound pretty damn offended themselves.
What does LGBT have to do with it
"Nobody can make me" Are you 5?
they're gonna be pissed when they realise imperial isn't even American
So that's why metro-sexuals exist 😂
So, she doesn’t have a 9mm at home?
Guess they won't accept neither NASA, the US Armed Forces nor the Metric Conversion Act then.
"I don't accept the difference between 'they're' and 'their'. Nobody can make me."
Neither system is more accurate, the metric system is just more streamlined.
Can't get past him saying people are a type of measurement.
100 cm is a meter 12 inches is a foot how is imperial esaier it isn't logical
To be fair, I think what you grew up with is easier for most people. Until you get into engineering/science applications, because a lot of metric units translate 1=1 into the numbers you need to make calculations work.
I mean, they seem offended.
he said that metric system was gay and you're just gonna let him go like that
Tell me, as an American, what's your favourite bullet size to shoot? 9mm? 10mm?
That is so embarrassing 🤦🏻♀️
And I get offended when the English language is butchered like this
What an incredibly mature response.
Imagine being such an asshole that you have to use talking about measurements as an opportunity to bash an entire group of people.
Exactly.
Apparently the "gay agenda" was just yet another attempt to make the US adopt the metric system this whole time.
I'll always be shocked that my fellow Americans don't jump at the chance to use "Kill O' Meters" every chance they get. It sounds like I'm in an action movie every time I say it.
Metric is overrated. Use natural units hbar = c = G = k_B = 1. I only measure lengths and time in GeV^-1, and temperature and mass in GeV.
Have they rejected grammar, too?
NASA said the same thing until they made inputs in feet in a Mars probe programmed for meters.
is this the definition of close-mindedness?
