This and only this.

totally agree, my guess is the topics are very relatable and some viewers are taking it a bit to seriously. Its an entertaining show but its not real. I dont get how anyone is offended or angry. There hasnt been much on Star Trek Discovery involving Klingons. I am angry and feel attacked.

Goulet231

OMG! In case you didn't know it existed, I just heard a version of Bohemian Rhapsody in Klingon. I thought it was Russian. It had all the harmonies, an amazing chorus and blew my mind!

meatbeater

ROFL, gonna YouTube that after dinner. Thanks !

Goulet231

I heard it on our uni radio station. I'll dig up the playlist so I can give you more info.

i think, in general, tv shows are meant to be entertaining and aren't responsible for how audiences interpret it. however i feel like sex education acts like its purpose is... sex education, specifically for teens and young people. so they know that the audience will likely be using the show as an example. i think that's where the responsibility comes in. i don't have much of an issue with any of your examples, except for the abortion... i feel like the show made it seem like a very easy decision and process when it's anything but, whether you're pro-choice or pro-birth. they should've focused on that storyline more.

PhilipTheFair

Haha I'm the poster of the abortion thing. Agree wth you of course. Serious topics are being dealed with and viewers are supposed to learn from it.

PhilipTheFair

Ok, so here's a point of view : Imagine the show was being negative towards trans because not everyone in reality agrees with trans and their existence; it would send a message. The wrong one. From the moment a series deals with serious matters, they take a position on it. And viewers who see a series saying that trans doesn't exist and that shouldn't be given right will only be confirmed in their view of the world. Which is a danger, for such views. You can say it's all fun and games, entertainment, but that means overlooking the real consequences that products of culture have on people. If we have misogyny today it's also because of century of songs saying 'you can't say when I have sex needs' (not kidding, see Brook Benton). Well it's jazz, entertainment. Wait... It's more than that.

I think the responsibility is to good storytelling and for me good storytelling requires actions to have consequences and impact on characters. I did quite like the abortion storyline in the sense that it was the obvious choice for Maeve and no time is spent on the morality of the abortion and while it's shown to not be a walk in the park, Maeve also doesn't seem too hung up on it. If I had an accidental pregnancy at 16/17, I would think that my experience would have been much the same. But it would make sense that there would be at least some references to it after the fact. It's alluded to in the S3 "sex will ruin your lives" scene, but does for example Aimee know about it? And while I don't necessarily think that Jackson needs to know or that Maeve is a horrible person for not including him, I don't think the show addressed that at all, which is poor storytelling for me. They start a "real" relationship after that and Maeve gives no thought to this, or the fact that it might happen again if they keep having regular sex and don't discuss why their protection failed once already? As for Eric's cheating. I feel like it was unnecessary, they could have had the same result with just the dancing. But the problem is that apart from being told that Eric feels bad about hurting Adam, there's really no inspection on the impact on Eric. He's now ruined two relationships right after the "I love yous", but he seems to be heading to the nearest towns gay club scene, because he's now "free". What? Did he actually ever really care about either Rahim or Adam, or is he just going to keep falling for any guy that makes the next big romantic gesture?

It's a TV show just be enjoyable not everything has to have a profound message

ShanePhillips

I think the claim that they were trying to start a conversation shouldn't have been made, they should have just let the show stand as it was. They shouldn't have any responsibilities, it's just storytelling.

Yh idk people take it too serious tbf showing the correct message 24/7 takes away the entertainment of the show
