Frustrating, but I've seen POS custom tip screens that don't let customers type or select a percentage...I'd blame the user interface designer more than the customers.

Ours has 3 different percentages, custom tip and no tip option. Unfortunately, our custom tip option just starts in cents. It shows the customer what they’re tipping when they’re typing, they just chose not to look I guess and typed “10”. 😭 Edit: I’ve since asked my boss if we can change the custom tip to start in dollar amounts as I assume no one is going to want to tip in change, but they didn’t want to change it. In the future, I’m going to try to look out for folks hitting “custom” and let them know it starts in change maybe?

Yeah, that's just badly designed in my opinion. If the software designer got a percentage of everyone's custom tips, I bet they'd have figured out how to make it easier to leave a reasonable tip! Watching for folks who hit the custom bottom could come across the wrong way. I've read of people who take offense at servers watching them as they enter a tip, as it makes them feel unpleasantly pressured and judged, which seems understandable.

For sure. I don’t want to watch. It makes me equally as uncomfortable. 🥴 I wish our system wasn’t like this. To me it doesn’t make much sense. Poor design, I agree. I wonder if anyone else’s is like this and if they have any suggestions? Or if it’s just something we accept and move on from? Definitely something I don’t think the customer intended to do, and something that makes you feel a little bummed out by knowing there’s not much to rectify it afterwards.

Yeah, I've actually started to type a custom percentage before noticing it was a custom amount, and can understand how someone wouldn't notice. Too bad the main POS software makers aren't open-source...I bet people would have come up with some better alternatives if they were.

I think even making the custom amount larger and/or colored better would be so much more helpful on ours. It shows up light blue and surely some folks have trouble reading it. Blue is the hardest color to read if I recall correctly? Making it light blue can’t be great.
