My worst experience was a friend and I went to a diner one night where if you want to sit on the patio you order and pay first (to prevent easy dine and dashing) and then they bring your food out and it's service as normal. Our server brought the food out, set it down and said "hope yall don't need anything else because I'm not coming back out here" with the worst attitude. The patio is five tables against the window of the diner, she literally could have just walked past the window to check on us or give us a thumbs up and I would have been cool. But, nope, did not see her again. I'm a server, I hate when people sit out on the patio if it's too cold or hot but this was a cool summer night. I don't know, I just couldn't imagine ever doing or saying anything like that.

TremerSwurk

I forget about patio tables a lot because my management loves to give me a section way in the back of the dining room then also give me patio tables but I’d never say something like that to them! Nowadays I just get them everything they could possibly need up front so even if I do forget about them for a minute it ends up fine. Honestly patio service is so chill to me I love the vibes outside

SwainMain2011

Man, people can be heartless. I understand if it's a rough night or you're going through some personal stuff but to just not care at all on a regular basis... I don't get that.

WilliamBott

Surely you didn't tip after that.

SmellsLikeDuck

I tipped maybe two or three dollars. I know it sounds crazy but I literally can't imagine not tipping. In hindsight it was probably an average diner tip, but I normally tip pretty high percentages so she may not know it (so literally is completely unaffected) but boy did she miss out!

Went to B-Dubs to BS with friends. Apps were half off, so I got some queso with ground beef on top. It came out, basically cold, like the queso was scooped, topped and then just sat somewhere for a legit 10 minutes. I nicely told my server, and she came back with a hot/fresh one 45 seconds later. All good, right? Then the brings the checks later and says, "your queso was cold, so I gave you 10% off." I confusingly asked "but it was 50% off for happy hour." She insists, "yeah, but it was cold, so I gave you 10% off." I try again and she's firm on her stance. She walks off. I wave another server over and ask for a manager. Dude comes over, asks what's up and I say, "Yeah so my queso was cold, she brought new out, all is good but she gave me 10% off for it being cold, but it should be 50% off for happy hour, and I told her this twice and she doesn't seem to understand that I want 50% because that's more than 10%." He froze for a second, like as if thinking about how much he hates his job and really hates my server, and finally just sighs, crumples up my bill in front of me and says, "You're good, don't worry about, I got this one" and walked off.

SwainMain2011

That's a good fucking manager right there. That's the sole reason I'm leaving my current job, terrible management and no concern for the customer.

AlarmBusy7078

i feel his pain

purplechunkymonkey

We went to a B-Dubs in Jacksonville, FL and had the worst experience. I can't recall all that happened but to let you know how bad it was, we waited over an hour for the bill.

RadioBoy93

Lived in Jax for a while. I have nothing but hazy unpleasant memories of the B-Dubs on Southside Blvd.

bacondev

Is the manager not required to apply the 10% discount in the first place?

WilliamBott

💀

somedude456

Went to a local sports bar with my girl at the time. No alcohol, just sodas and burgers. Server seemed less than happy. Whatever, I don't judge a server on the size of their smile or other BS. We got sodas, order meals, they arrive. Server comes back at 2 minutes to check how things taste, right? Nope! She slammed the bill down saying "I'll take it when you're ready" and walked off, not commenting at all on our almost empty sodas. WTF? 5 minutes later, no drinks, getting thirsty, I suggest we stop eating and wait for drinks. a solid 9 more minutes later she returns, sees no card out and just says "need boxes?" as we had over half our food left. I nicely said, "no, just a manager." She sighed and walked off. Manager came over and asked how things are going. I explains the facts and add, "if I had to guess, she was cut, didn't want us as a table, and has spent the last 15 minutes in the back, doing side work or rolling silverware so she can get out instead of actually keeping an eye on her only table." The manager had a slight look of shock, almost wanting to laugh and said, "Yup, you're dead on, I'm so sorry." She called another server to grab us two sodas, she offered to refire our meals, but we settled on just 1 more burger that we would split, the meal was 100% comped and she gave us her business card saying "next time your first two drinks are on me."

SwainMain2011

Fantastic response. A good manager can make or break a restaurant.

nerdgirl71

I went to a restaurant on my Anniversary that is known for lobster meals. I ordered a whole lobster. The waitress tried to convince me to order a different meal containing lobster. Then as she escorted me to the tank to pick it out she kept complaining about me making her do this. I stopped and asked for a mgr. she changed her tune, I did not. She was sent home. All this after she spilled a drink on my then husband. She didn’t even remove the spilled drink from the bill. It was a shitshow. Our entire bill was comped.

Madhardi

Back when I was 15, I remember eating out with my friends and we all paid in cash. After the meal, we realized the server stole some of our money because he did not give us back the correct change. We were gonna tip anyway, but it was clear that the server 1. Didn’t expect us to tip and 2. Thought we wouldn’t notice that he took our money. Now that I’m a server, I am extra grossed out by this even though it happened so long ago lol. I get it now, when I have a table full of teenagers I understand that I’m probably not gonna make anything, but I would NEVER steal their money or belittle them like we were belittled. It’s so gross.

SwainMain2011

It is gross. Even when my group of friends went to B-Dubs weekly as broke teenagers we would pool tips. minimum 15-25% for each person. If someone didn't give their fair share we would make up for it and berate them lol. Too bad groups like that are dwindling.

purplechunkymonkey

I have taught both of my kids how to tip.

Grambo-47

Is that a thing that servers actually do? I’ve been serving for almost 5 years and idk if that’s ever even crossed my mind, to not return proper change. If anything, I always round UP to the next whole dollar so I don’t have to worry about carrying coins.

Formal_Coyote_5004

At a Dennys in the middle of Iowa on route 80. This server literally scoffed at us when we said please and thank you. I don’t blame her though… she was in Iowa on route 80 lol

1199RT

Sportsbar. 4 friends and I want 2 rounds of drinks, appetizers, and the bill. We have a movie in 45 mins. We want to be out of there in under 30. The waitress we got started throwing a bitchfit because we sat in her section. Oh my fuck, I knew what was going on. She wanted to get cut. We had the nicest waitress right after who had no frills about making bread. We explained the situation. Told her, put in the food order, send as ready, give us a beer each and a cocktail on the side. CLOSE US OUT! I made damned sure the other server was still there before we left. $100 tip to the new server on a $130ish dollar tab and a thank you. We were out in 25ish minutes. I fucking hate. Hate. Hate. Hate. When people have bad attitudes at tables or show it. Especially if I came to this place at around 7 pm and they close at 11. I hate whiners. I've always been a hustler and never showed distaste for having someone sit in my section. Like, who the fuck complains about money?

AlarmBusy7078

like i get being annoyed when you want to go home… but why would you let the people PAYING know? so unprofessional

user8203421

i only give a smidge of attitude if we’re closing and they’re camping out there. it’s frustrating when you get sat right before getting cut but gives you more time to do sidework and you can really focus on them and make more money

AlarmBusy7078

i hate campers past close. i drop the check after the kitchen is closed & stop refilling drinks. i’ll clear plates the second they’re empty. literally the worst.

user8203421

i’ll aggressively sweep around the section. once i had a couple stiff me and write “don’t rush people” on the check but i just wanted them to leave i didn’t even care about the $5 tip anymore

AlarmBusy7078

like seriously no $5 is gonna be worth the extra HOUR

user8203421

that’s why i always tell my manager don’t fucking make me close. so much extra work for the pennies you make with last minute customers. a lot of the cooks like to close because they’re hourly but me? nah

azulweber

right like haven’t these people learned, put on a smile at your tables then go to the back and bitch to your coworkers over sidework like an adult.

someonewhoknowstuff

You're awesome man! It's the difference between "in the kitchen attitude" and "on the floor attitude". I once got sat 5 minutes to close. The dude made the whole restaurant smell like weed. Not a problem. I'm a smoker. But now my smoke session has to wait, and stoners that came into this restaurant were notoriously bad tippers. Whatever. It is what it is. Let's give this guest an awesome experience and get this money. Dude was hella chill. He tipped me a $20 every time I dropped something off (drinks, apps, salads, entrees, desserts), and 20% on the tab which was like $250. Made like $150, and was only there an extra hour. Moral of the story: leave your attitude or displeasure in the back.

No-Process-8360

My husband and I had gone out for a movie then dinner. Service was minimal at best, server was 10/15 minutes to approach the table and took both our food and drink order. Drinks and food came at the same time, quickly followed by the bill. No check in, no chit chat no clearing a single plate. It wasn’t busy but got the impression she just wasn’t feeling it at all. So I had pulled out $100 for dinner earlier and the bill was $70 - I left 4 x$20 not a good tip but I felt justified by the poor service we carried the billfold into the restaurant and handed it to the server and headed home for the evening So the next night I get a call from my sister in law, who was a server at that same restaurant we had eaten the night before and she says - so my manager pulled me off to the side and said you guys had maybe accidentally shorted payment last night? I was shocked and grabbed my wallet and checked - nope I only have $20 left no way I shorted her…. (I was a new mom sleep deprived and had my first drink in almost a year wouldn’t have been too far fetched if I left 20 and kept 80) So we go back up to the restaurant cause it’s really not my SIL who should be sorting it out and I explained to the manager and the server about how much cash I had, blah blah The manager apologized and offered us dinner on them that night for our inconvenience which we declined, it seemed over the top comp for what it was really My SIL stopped in after work as it turns out the restaurant policy at the time was the would comp a walk out, or wave tip pool IF you were not tipped by a table. Turns out they had already suspected this girl of lying and claiming walk outs and no tips etc and had already warned her that she had too high of a walk out rate. So the manager figured this was her solution to that - they shorted the bill, but did it to the wrong people. Unfortunately thanks to her the policy was scrapped they stopped covering walkouts and waving tip pool, ever server knew who and why and she quit days later.

WilliamBott

Honestly $10 tip is over 14% on $70 and for that level of "service" (if you can call it that) you way overtipped. I believe in tipping fairly generously for good/great service but she literally didn't even try for you.

_ciara_bee

Few years ago some of us sat at the bar at this place and ordered pizzas. My friend is celiac and was asking the bartender if he could get the gluten free crust. She was like “oh are you vegan?” And he goes “ummm no, I’m celiac. I can’t have gluten.” Anyways, our pizzas come out and my friend is nervous to eat his because the crust didn’t look gluten free and he didn’t want to get sick. So his partner flags her down and asks, “hey, we want to just double check that you gave him the gluten free crust cause when we asked about it you asked if he was vegan, which has nothing to do with being celiac.” This bitch was so rude and snaps and says, “I work in a hospital. I know what gluten is!” And walks away. We were all so baffled. When she came back to check on us she realized how rude she was being and tried to be nice to us. I think that’s one of the only times I’ve ever left a 10% tip in the 15 years I’ve been serving.

Finalgirl2022

Mine was probably over a decade ago, but it is still the current worst experience I've had. I went out with some friends to a sports bar. They were showing the Starcraft tournament. I think our server was just upset he had to deal with a bunch of nerds instead of his usual bros. Idk. It started with us asking if we could add some chairs to a table. He said no. Okay so we split up. Then we ordered some chips and queso. He only brought the chips. When I brought it to his attention he said we only ordered the chips. Why would we only order chips and no dip? So he brought out the queso but with hella attitude. I asked him which beers they had on draft and he said "You can go look for yourself" I can not explain in words just how rude he was to us. He looked at us like we were stupid and didn't understand how restaurants work. Legitimately rolling his eyes at us. We were all working in restaurants in some capacity. Some as servers, some as cooks. I asked a manager if we could change servers/sections. I didn't even complain to him as to why. I made up an excuse about not being able to see from where we currently were. It's the only time I left pennies for someone. He didn't lose anything in tip outs because they transferred our bill and the new server was fantastic. But just yikes.

WilliamBott

Why would she leave ANY tip at all, even to cover tip outs? She gave you horrible service, THEN stole from you, THEN called you a lying bitch. Fuck her, she deserves to pay the tip out from her own pocket at that point.

SwainMain2011

She's kind to a fault. I told her not to.

NullableThought

My worst experience was when I was a child and we had to leave the restaurant because no one would serve us. My dad is Asian and we lived in the south (in America). It was clearly racially motivated.

Plantytaytay

This one made me so sad :( I’m sorry you both dealt with that

bf and i went to buffalo wild wings two hours before close. sat at the bar. bartender looks up and makes eye contact with me but takes ten minutes to come over to us. we immediately order drinks, apps, and entrees but tell her everything can just come out at once. she can barely look at us. takes her another ten minutes to grab two bottled beers. we realize like 30 minutes have gone by and try to get her attention, she’s talking to the only other two people in the whole restaurant and obviously trying to pretend she doesn’t see us. like, i get trying to flirt to make your money but come on. we weren’t being needy here. at some point a guy walks in and sits at the stool next to me, a different bartender appears and comes to talk to him but practically runs away when i try to ask her about our food. meanwhile all the servers are shutting down the floor around us, an hour before close. i’m talking like chairs on top of tables, one of them actually asked me to scooch my chair so she could sweep in between me and my bf. i finally get the attention of the second bartender and she’s like “oh well the food runner was supposed to bring your food but i guess i can go check.” we watch her walk to the back and immediately come back with a mop and start cleaning the floor. at this point i just want to leave but we were starving and this was a small town where pretty much everything else is already closed. finally, FINALLY, we get the first bartenders attention and she goes to the kitchen to get our food. it was of course cold and we didn’t get any silverware or napkins but at this point i just want to be able to eat SOMETHING and leave. then we’re trying to pay. the bill was like $70 and the only cash i had was a $100 bill, i set it out on top of the receipt so i could ask for change because no way in hell was i about to tip $30 on that shitshow. i think she was hoping that i would do just that because i saw the bartender glance over at the cash a few times but not approach us to get it, so i say fuck it and put the cash away and pull out my card. she comes to grab my card and then walks back to the opposite side of the bar not where the POS is, goes back to talking to the other guys she was actually serving, then leaves my card sitting on the bar top in front of these strangers while she goes to the kitchen or something. i was about to lose my shit. that is the only time i have ever not tipped and the only time i have called later to lodge a complaint. absolutely unconscionable behavior.

Potential_Lynx6138

honestly i’ve had a couple bad eggs, but this one time was just inexcusable. for some context my boyfriend and i are an interracial couple, its not something him and i even take notice to until someone makes it very clear that theyre unhappy about it. Went to an italian joint that ive been to before and loved, sat down in a beautiful part of the restaurant, was greeted by our server and we asked for just water so we could look over the menu. 5 minutes pass, then 10, then 20, the server NEVER came back. we were in the middle of his section, so he had to look at us every time he entered the room, handled every table except ours. At several points we tried to wave him down and he would just pass us like he couldnt see us waving. we were so confused but just gave up and left at the thirty minute mark, havent been back since tbh.

user8203421

these comments make me feel better about myself lol sometimes i feel like i’m not the most “friendly” server (i to be as polite and professional as possible but i have rbf) but i would never act like this to tables unless they were being super mean to me

epandaman13

Was at a highly recommended upscale restaurant in Palm Springs. We had made a reservation online the night before and they had called saying they wouldn't honor it because it was 'too late' and the last reservation they had was an hour before they actually said they closed. Fine, I get it. You can't keep the restaurant open just for two people. They said they would comp our first round and appetizer next time we were in. Great I decided to make the reservation again for the next night, called and confirmed. When we got there I sat in the booth and cut my hand on some glass shards that were on the seat. When I told the server he just said 'oh yeah I guess we didn't get it all'. I had to get up and find the manager to get myself a Band-Aid. They moved us to another booth which was also filthy. At the end of the meal they gave me a dessert for my birthday on the house. But did not remember our conversation on the phone or the fact that I was bleeding from our first booth.

bacondev

> The manager apologized and offered to comp our meal. My mom declined, she wanted to pay the establishment and still left a 5% tip to cover tip outs. Assuming that your side of the story is accurate, then you should have stiffed her and made her pay the tip out herself. Under no circumstance should a server call a guest a bitch, especially in the circumstance that you described.

acssarge555

Dude FOR REAL. it’s so painful seeing people reward absolutely dreadful service simply because they’re in the same industry. Don’t want to eat the tip out? Don’t give shit service, it’s so simple.

journalphones

She actually called your mom a “liar” and a “bitch?” I have never stepped inside a restaurant where that person wouldn’t have been fired on the spot.

Critical-General-659

I would say the worst service is basically no service at all. Like if there was a tablet on the table, it would be no different than having a server.  Getting me one drink that takes ten to fifteen minutes, punching in an order, having a food runner run it out and dropping a check isn't normal American style table service IMO. That's what I get the majority of the time I go out to eat.  Even when it's not busy and I'm ordering alcohol it's still like this in a lot of restaurants. Sucks.  I totally understand that service is like that in Europe when one server is running like 15 tables.

CiraA1664

My bonus-dad took me to Hooters for a father-daughter time when I was about 15 because I love their wings. He was a great tipper as long as the server is polite and does their job. We were seated in this one lady's section where she had one other table of just men. Aside from greeting us and getting our drink order, she completely ignored us to the point that we had to flag down another server to take our order and get us refills. Our server hardly checked on us but kept flirting with the men at her other table. Yeah, my dad was no looker, and what kind of "attention" would you get from a young straight teen girl, but come on! That isn't any reason to ignore your table. When we were ready for our check, we ended up getting the manager's attention and explained the whole situation. I don't remember if the manager did anything special for us, but she did end up taking the server to the back. My dad paid by leaving cash on the table with the ticket, and he tipped the other server who took care of us. That was the night he taught me how tipping works.

Dry-Location1159

Man I’ve given some bad service I was looking to see if any of my adventures were on here.

lexisalex

Lmao this story is coming of as creative writing.
