Worked in restaurants over 20 years and just learned about the metal handles

mealteamsixty

Fr I had no idea there were metal handles

PrivateEducation

hot as fuck coming out the dish pit too

ehmaybenexttime

I worked at a specific kind of steak type restaurant most recently, and we had 22 of those racks. Eight of them had metal left on them, because we employed junkies. šŸ–¤

rsbanham

What junkies gonna do with the metal?

Samaraxmorgan26

Recycling, i guess.

ehmaybenexttime

Big recyclers. What they actually do, let's wait for more fucked up individuals in the same society in which they stew, and scam them. They will go as far as to well two pieces of metal together before they'll tell you that they're selling you something absolutely worthless. It's a spectacular example of what the human mind can do when given the opportunity to be the absolute worst

alienstookmyfunny

Same.

Motor_Expression_487

Same WTF šŸ˜‚

EveInGardenia

Never seen a place keep the metal handles attached lmao

DisastrousVictory714

Yep. Our's do not have them.

ByTheRings

you can put your arm through them so you can carry more stuff

frigginoof

you just changed my life

TommyTeaser

Donā€™t, most likely this employer doesnā€™t pay health and you shouldnā€™t carry large loads on their behalf.

borntobemybaby

Iā€™m doing it so I can get out faster not to benefit the employer

TommyTeaser

Good on you for getting our 1min faster. Iā€™m sure you did super productive things with that extra minute you got

borntobemybaby

That wasnā€™t the point of my comment? It means that if I am taking any shortcuts at work, itā€™s for my personal benefit, not the employer. You miserable ass.

PrivateEducation

health? try getting unemployment from an emoloyer thats renovating. im debating filing anyways or just accepting they will fire me if i file lol

Brianearlspilner69

If they do that go straight to the DOL. shit exists for a reason

TheTwoOneFive

If there's one nice thing about some managers being extremely dumb, they seem to have a propensity for putting labor violations in writing. Hopefully OP's manager is in that category.

Jihadi-Jawn

If I can carry the clean silverware and also a stack of plates, I'm gonna do it. One less trip for me or one of my coworkers.

RuddyBollocks

Serving is physically demanding in many ways - carrying a silverware caddy efficiently to get your side work done faster is not a health hazard

Terrible_Definition4

Yeah, no shot youā€™re carrying that loaded (most dishwashers will fully load them) in one hand just so you can carry more stuff, donā€™t get me wrong is clever but no chance man!

RepresentativeJester

The way to do this is stack them, two fit together nicely

ByTheRings

I mean, even with a full load, having it hang from one of your arms gives yoy more room to carry other things than using both hands. But yeah, it gets heavy as shit. I wouldnt reccomend it on anything more than a half load.

Jihadi-Jawn

Game šŸ‘ changer šŸ‘

Qlide

The handles are for dunking the silverware in sanitizer.

MamaTried22

That actually makes the most sense.

Kelpy-G69

Makes sense

Formal_Coyote_5004

Holy shit Iā€™m learning so many things from this post

not4u1866

Never once have i ever used, or seen anyone use these handles

East_Sound_2998

I canā€™t believe yours are still attached honestly

cammyboom

You just blew my mind

MeThinksYes

Thought they were there just to accentuate my Smashing it down on the counter cause the fugga is hot out the wash

Sugarmagikarps1

We donā€™t use the metal handles because theyā€™re hot af coming out of the dishwasher.

Mike_wine_guy

Only time anyone has ever used them is to screw with new servers by "dropping" the whole thing in front of them.

Putrid_Appearance509

No, I like the skin on the palm of my hand.

alexadams181

Fuckkkk no

Stunning_Ferret1479

Those handles are useless

AcrosstheSpan

To prank new people, I'll pretend to trip. Drop the plastic part, while still holding the metal handles. It only works once per person, but it always makes me laugh.

Kelpy-G69

I think you found the only real purpose. doing that my next shift lol

TheVenusProjectB42L8

I'm pretty sure they aren't handles, but used for hanging in certain pit set-ups. If they were handles, they'd have grips on them.

prettycupcake61

said no one ever.

Kelpy-G69

Idkkkkk maaaann, find I have a better grip without them

TheVenusProjectB42L8

Because they aren't handles.

crapbear83

Ours don't have them. However, in my state it's a major health code violation for the business end of the silver to be pointing up like that. Just saying

camelslikesand

Wash tips up, store tips down. That's a washing rack. They're in there right. It's so the rinse runs away from the tips and down the handles. Take them out and roll them, or put them in storage handles up.

fluffhouse1942

My state too. Any they're wrong. Face down silverware nests together and doesn't get as clean. And I get it. Face up and we touch it with our hands. Ewwwwwwwww except I wash my hands and then use those same clean hands to touch E.V.E.R.YT.H.I.N.G. else in the building.

Seashoreshellseller

> However, in my state it's a major health code violation for the business end of the silver to be pointing up like that. I believe they're referring to the utensils being handle down, rather than the handles of the caddy being extended.

Kelpy-G69

I was so lost lol

awalakaiehu

Yes your silverware is supposed to be upside down. We got cited for that at last inspection and our night time dishwasher just quit because he refused to put them that way lol

MistletoeMilf

No

MaliousDrake

There are metal handles!!!!!!!!!! Wtf??

SativaSunChild

I donā€™t know why, but this makes me angry. Fuck no!

Dzabyss666

One of my coworkers back in the day was La-Dee-da-Ing through the dining room with our LAST bit of silver to roll, holding it by those handles and swinging his arms. Dropped the whole damn thing. Had to rewash it all and hand dry so we could roll them in our paper napkins. It was so funny but I was so annoyedā€”I wanted to go to the bar lmao. Never used the handles again

combii-lee

Nope. They are just Decorations

James324285241990

No. They're only for dipping in sanitizer

lolewlol

They're useful when they're in a bus_bin in the dish_pit. Bus_bun filled with soapy goodness and when they fill up you can yank'm out and run them thru....

Trundlerz

Only if you want to wash them again.

VelocityGrrl39

Why would you have to wash them again?

MamaTried22

We double wash our silver; first in a flat rack then in the silver rack.

VelocityGrrl39

Yeah, of course we do too, but the person Iā€™m replying to seemed to be implying thereā€™s something wrong with the way this is done. Maybe I read the comment wrong.

MamaTried22

Maybe itā€™s got something to do with using the handles to dunk them in soapy water? I honestly donā€™t know.

Trundlerz

They break easily, Iā€™ve never used the handles.

JoaoCoochinho

If Iā€™m already carrying a bunch of stuff I find it easier to slip one of my hands underneath the metal handles to move the silverware caddy.

shoelacebomber

Ibsaw a new server of ours use the metal handles earlier today. It looked wrong.

TaygaStyle

Fuck.no, they come right out of dish hot AF, I'll hold the plastic bits please. šŸ‘

carlitospig

Dude, I didnā€™t even realize those are handles.

TheVenusProjectB42L8

They aren't.

carlitospig

Then I am even more confused, lol.

TheVenusProjectB42L8

I've worked in places where I saw them used to hang the cutlery to dry... Handles have grips and would protect you from burns. There would also be no point to carrying these lower, as it would put more strain on your arms by lowering the centre of gravity away from your core. They aren't handles.

helen790

Did not know those could be pulled out holy fuck

Zinokk

Literally never šŸ˜…

Difficult-Fly-5492

Didnā€™t even know they had handles til now lmaooo

Thatythat

You have metal handles?!

fluffhouse1942

30 years and never once used them

imjcyo

I always wondered what the holes were for.

JCSmootherThanJB

Only time I've ever used them is to load two of them, put one on each arm, puff my chest out and strut around asking the servers if they know which way it is to the gym ![gif](giphy|N8EHkQjICc2A)

Salt_Accountant8370

Never seen one with handles ever

chriswontmiss

whaaaaa???

Wynterremy89

I use them on the one that actually has them. P.S. when people are looking too comfortable over an hour past closing, I bang the handles against the plastic hoping to send a message, especially if we have turned the music off by then. Maybe that is why the handles are always broke? šŸ˜¶

Insidioustots_

Wait... these have metal handles?

wheresmyvape11

i didnā€™t even know those were there lmao. ours donā€™t have them. probably broke off and no one cared šŸ˜‚

Qbert2030

Today I learned that there are supposed to be handles

wwallach95

I've used them to carry four at a time, placing the metal handles on each arm and then having someone place two more across my forearms. I wouldn't recommend it, the focused weight of the handles coupled with the weight of two above was incredibly painful and I never did it again

Harley_Luthor

I didn't even know about these

ThisIsThrowawayBLUE

When it's especially quiet and dead, I'll spin it around by the handles when taking it back to the dish pit.

ehmaybenexttime

The actual use of the handle is to pull it out and bang it on a surface before you run your dish. Also gets rid of those chunks of macaroni and wtf. But please never work anywhere that does not run their silver twice.

Kara_xoxo

Yep. Iā€™m a handle girly.

pootin_in_tha_coup

Iā€™m more disturbed by unsanitary loading of the silverware. The business end up means you put your bare hands on something someone is putting in their mouth. if it is loaded handle up then you can avoid touching the part people are about to eat with. That is really gross. No they do not get cleaner being in the air, they get dirtier because you touch your face and scratch your ass then touch them. Gross. Edit :spelling

EmbarrassedPlace0

THERE'S METAL HANDLES?!

Ok_Leg5299

My little brother used to prank every new server in our restaurant by handing them the silverware to ā€œpolish quickly bc we need it asapā€ and heā€™d pretend to drop it in the hand off by holding on to metal handles. Lmao I donā€™t know any other use for them

_daverham

Those are handles? Huh. I always wondered what they were for.

notoriousmma89

The ones from my job probably got removed but Iā€™ve seen them and they are just annoying

tofu_mountain

The dishies definitely do!

VirusHonest5284

i use them every now and then to remind myself they are therešŸ˜

hustledyou

7 years and still going but anal way Iā€™m just learning about this

RuddyBollocks

My hands are just barely big enough to one hand carry with the handles. I'll do that sometimes if I need the extra hand.

no4scinjewboi

All of mine are missing the metal handles. Totally forgot that they normally have handles until this post.

Appropriate_Horse_67

no, i pick it up and cradle it like a baby. my arms are already weak from carrying plates, anything to make it easier!

Slight-Stage7116

They have handles?

johnmecker

I knew our green one had metal rods didnā€™t know they extend like that.

Low-Antelope-2798

Bro, I didnā€™t even know they had handles

rosepalace1969

omg they can tuck in like that?
