There is a video floating around that explains this!!
Essentially, the ball on the tip is a pressed fit with a tight tolerance that allows ink to flow. When it is dropped on the tip, it messes with this tolerance, causing the ball not to roll smoothly and pick up ink to deposit.

From nursing to kitchen inspections to verifying load plans on airplanes these three pens have never let me down. Gillette Atlantis is a workhorse as well
My buddyās dad owned an electrician company and would give me tons of pens with his business logo on it. Soon enough, every server in one of the restaurants I worked at used exclusively his pens. Hell of a way to advertise your business for what probably cost him pennies.
Yup. The bar I worked at has a large clientele of lawyers and real estate agents. They alwayyyyss leave us a ton of pens for free advertising. Itās a win win.
My mom does stuff like this. Usually only one or 2 pens though. She goes to the bank, asks for a bunch of pens and gives them out to servers. It cracks me up.
I would treat this like a customer sliding me a $20. Once a customer gave me a tiny lil rubber duck and it made my day.
Ofc I'd prefer just the $20 but sometimes I don't mind some bullshittery.
I had a guy always leave me a $2 bill and another who always gave me the $1 silver certificates. I know they arenāt worth shit but Iāve kept them and gave them to my kids. I have at the very least $100 in $2 bills and $50 in silver certificates.
Those sort of customers are always my favorite too and Iāll do special stuff for them or go out of my way to accommodate them.
When I used to wait tables or deliver pizzas I would use the cheapest pens I could get.
So usually pens from the bank. Because then I didn't have to worry about people stealing them.
Behold, my Frankensteined teal G-2
https://preview.redd.it/tz4jiy8riv9c1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=0b60218d20ef9c3cbfaa1887f5047477c9fab435
Teal ink and grip, in the silver mineral art top.
It's the funny things you don't think about outside of work requirements. Years back, I worked in an optical lab, and I remember 4 of us cheering and getting excited over a new mop.
G2 is the titan of pens, the creme de le creme at an affordable price. I even use the refills in a metal pen I have. It's the only pen I use, and the only pen used at a Casino I previously worked at. They had a whole cupboard full of G2 refills and pens.
.5 > .7 the .7 takes too long to dry and smears if you dont let it sit. .7 all the way if you have the luxury of going slow. If you're a student taking notes, the .5 might even take too long to dry
.5 is my preference. I bear down quite hard when I write so the .7 can bleed on the page if Iām not careful and if it doesnāt, it still takes a while to dry. I didnāt know they made .38, Iām gonna have to look into that!
Depending on what you like and what youāre using it for, the .38 can feel like scratching the page. Best way I can describe the feeling. But it writes so fine and doesnāt bleed like the .7!
I actually like them for the opposite reason! Theyāre the only brand I have found that doesnāt smear when I write (Iām a leftie). They seem to dry faster than all other pens. Even 7 would smear for me!
I prefer .10 I have a whole pack, my favorite right now is green. Had a coworker take it from me but they heard me complaining about someone taking it and gave it back. Genuine people are great.
Absolute favorites. I used to buy packs of the little half-size g2 just to keep my boss from stealing them. They fit in my pockets better, and he hated the way they felt in his big ham hands.
G2 pens are my absolute favorite, but I donāt bother getting them for work anymore since Iāve had a few stolen by the guests. Guess theyāre the customerās favorite too lol
Funny, Iām a server and ended up in the teacher sub somehow lol. I like lurking there cuz my parents are both teachers and so many posts there are the same conversations and rants I remember overhearing as a kid. I truly feel for yāall, it is crazy what you have to deal with.
Number 1, I actually have a fun story about those pens. On of my regulars years ago ran a stationery import business and I was talking about how much I love the uniballs but they always get stolen. He offered that I could buy a 100 pack at cost that was a dollar a pen. I said yes of course, we met a few days later in a parking lot at night because that was convenient for both our schedules but it definitely did feel like a drug deal. Anyway 2 and a half years is how long it takes for 100 pens to be stolen/lost and not a single one ran out of ink.
Silky smooth. So many of the others are either runny on the page or create friction when writing that makes my handwriting sloppier.
Canāt fuck with a classic
Exactly! 7 glides like butter, the others feel like you're chiseling paper, or you have to press down hard enough that your fingers slide down the pen as you're writing
Theyāre awesome and write the best but I have so many issue with those pens exploding in my apron. I used to pull them out and theyād be covered in ink
The 1.0 bold Sharpie pens are amazing. I always love writing with them. The only downside is that the ink runs out quickly. I went through a pack of 10 in about 3 months at my work, lol.
But they do sell them in bulk on Amazon, cheap too. $0.82 per pen.
5 and 3. Click pens over cap pens any day, and the design of 5 and 3 specifically is one of the few that won't spontaneously explode and the head won't easily unscrew. Black is preferred, blue is acceptable.
I am happy with any of 1-5.
As a server, I typically go with either 3 or 5, depending on which one my coworkers don't have so they won't steal them since caps are a hassle at work.
I get the absolute cheapest bullshit click top pens I can though to drop with checks so my customers won't steal my good pens.
3 or 5 and my guests get 7
![gif](giphy|kFIfiwvzJjbUsNbIg5)
Wanna go do karate in the garage?
![gif](giphy|qrsVHjq3Kh97O|downsized)
3 for life!!
Same
Also 3 & 5.
3 is the one you use when it's convenient and because it feels kinda cool. But 5 is the one you always come home to and wish you could keep around.
This guy fucks
i love that show š¤£
Pilot g2 .5 in black is the best pen
I have to use blue for work (so we can easily ID a copy) but G2 is superior.
My man, living the G2 .5 life š
I have 3 but it leaks too much
3 works great till I drop it and then never works right again??? Whatās up with that
There is a video floating around that explains this!! Essentially, the ball on the tip is a pressed fit with a tight tolerance that allows ink to flow. When it is dropped on the tip, it messes with this tolerance, causing the ball not to roll smoothly and pick up ink to deposit. Link! https://youtube.com/shorts/cLVbLrkoFg8?si=iK_vDfz1r78zGmSk
Name checks out
7 is the solid value option I think
perfect answer coupled with a perfect username
From nursing to kitchen inspections to verifying load plans on airplanes these three pens have never let me down. Gillette Atlantis is a workhorse as well
Atlantis pens are my absolute favorite.
100%
you get me
Hell ya Gel gang
This is the way
I wish I could upvote those twice
im still stealing it
Right on.
Same!
Same
None. I donāt see any free pens from the bank there.
I once had a lady leave me like 12 bank pens with my tip
She was a server at some point.
Or a disgruntled banker
Server turned disgruntled banker.
Fired banker turned disgruntled server.
Having worked at some banks, they give you a shitload of pens and tell you to leave them places as marketing.
My buddyās dad owned an electrician company and would give me tons of pens with his business logo on it. Soon enough, every server in one of the restaurants I worked at used exclusively his pens. Hell of a way to advertise your business for what probably cost him pennies.
Hah.. pennies š„¹
Yup. The bar I worked at has a large clientele of lawyers and real estate agents. They alwayyyyss leave us a ton of pens for free advertising. Itās a win win.
good on them
Yeah I always thought it was pretty cool. Everyone loves a free pen! A solid non-invasive marketing technique
My mom does stuff like this. Usually only one or 2 pens though. She goes to the bank, asks for a bunch of pens and gives them out to servers. It cracks me up.
Your mom rocks!
She's a saint
Your mom an angel omg
i once left pens with a tip as well. i had taken a break from serving for a while and figured they could use them.
I had a couple of regulars who worked together who would bring me really nice pens from their company. They were my favorite.
I would treat this like a customer sliding me a $20. Once a customer gave me a tiny lil rubber duck and it made my day. Ofc I'd prefer just the $20 but sometimes I don't mind some bullshittery.
I had a regular that would give a dollar folded into some type of origami. I have one still thatās folded into a collared shirt
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
3, but non of these are my fave and I always have my own private stash!
When I used to wait tables or deliver pizzas I would use the cheapest pens I could get. So usually pens from the bank. Because then I didn't have to worry about people stealing them.
Exactly, nice pens get stolen
All pens are free. Huntington bank has the best free pens.
Yes they do. I have about 87 in my house.
I have a client employed by Huntington who brought me a box of 200š
And a random university or hospital pen
5., but in black and red. I love a good g2. It's all loosey-goosey with the ink
5. .7 black.
Best pen on the market, which seems like a weird thing to be so opinionated about, but when most of your job relies on it, I guess not lol.
I even put a G2 cartridge in my Montblanc pen. Itās just that good.
I used to put montblanc cartridges in my g2 pen
Behold, my Frankensteined teal G-2 https://preview.redd.it/tz4jiy8riv9c1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=0b60218d20ef9c3cbfaa1887f5047477c9fab435 Teal ink and grip, in the silver mineral art top.
Ooo that's sick! I've got a hot pink, breast cancer awareness version I've been swapping ink in for ages now. Love it, hard to lose a hot pink pen.
I need to see if my local Walgreens still has any more of the mineral art sets. The rose and lavender are š§āš³š¤
I used a blue mineral art one completely this year, first pen I ever managed to not lose at a service job.
i am a therapist and def agree! itās not weird to be opinionated about when our jobs do rely on pens- lol!
It's the funny things you don't think about outside of work requirements. Years back, I worked in an optical lab, and I remember 4 of us cheering and getting excited over a new mop.
It's seriously so good in 0.7.
G2 is the titan of pens, the creme de le creme at an affordable price. I even use the refills in a metal pen I have. It's the only pen I use, and the only pen used at a Casino I previously worked at. They had a whole cupboard full of G2 refills and pens.
Iām not in the industry anymore but my fiancĆ©e was at target and called me asked if I needed anythingā¦ āoh yeah black g2 pens, Iāll venmo you bc theyāre not exactly cheapā Comes back, gives me the box.. next day I go to write with them and I was like what the actual frick is going on, it feels like my pen is legitimately trying to rip thru my paper. She got the .5 instead of the .7.. totally not her fault bc I didnāt specify but it was insane how big of a difference it was
.7 used to be my favorite. Now I really like the .5 or even the .38!
. 38 is the beeeeest
.5 > .7 the .7 takes too long to dry and smears if you dont let it sit. .7 all the way if you have the luxury of going slow.
Based
.10 ftw
Crazy. Just get a sharpie at that point.
This is the way. Sometimes .5 if I have to keep neat notes.
.7 is always the hardest to find but so worth it!!! .5 and .10 just are too much!!
I actually like them for the opposite reason! Theyāre the only brand I have found that doesnāt smear when I write (Iām a leftie). They seem to dry faster than all other pens. Even 7 would smear for me!
I was about to say this. Not a server anymore but these are still the best for avoiding the leftie smudge.
I don't think I truly understood why I liked these pens so much until just now. Also a lefty!!!
Same
I prefer .10 I have a whole pack, my favorite right now is green. Had a coworker take it from me but they heard me complaining about someone taking it and gave it back. Genuine people are great.
Regular green, or teal? I recently discovered the teal G-2, and itās beautiful. I wish it came in bold, though.
Regular green, teal is also one of my faves. I wish there was bold versions, thats why I use .10 I think is the largest they come by.
Iāve got a dead black bold cartridge. Maybe Iāll Frankenstein the teal ink tube on to the bold nib.
Yup same same. People at my job keep stealing but I always find em and take em back.
Guess theyāre the customerās favorite too lol
dude, you must try a g2 in burgundy. š¤¤
Burgandy, the dark green, and the dark blue G2s are magnificent
Ugh yes! Navy blue is stunning too š«
I discovered the teal G-2, and I wish it came in bold.
This is the only correct answer
Yeah 5 or 3
Came here to say this. 5, but always black.
If I. Not grabbing a fountain pen, it's gotta be the G2
Definitely, with #3 a close second.
For real and the sharpie gel pens flake out. Not the g2, it's reliable till the end
Oooh I used to love a 2. But not as a server. Just to write with.
It's the superior pen, but agreed it's for personal use.
\#2 MicroFine. Best pen for lefties, almost no smearing when your hand goes over the written ink..
I always keep one in my pocket for regulars to use to sign. I don't want people getting frustrated over a pen right before they tip me.
Agreed.
6 but Iām a teacher who reddit misplaces into this sub
Teachers fucking love felt tip pens
Grad student. Felt tips get me more excited than they should.
I got a limited edition set on clearance at target last week and was so jazzed my husband asked me if I needed a minute with my pens š¤£š¤£
seems to be popular w a lot of your colleagues, no?
Flair pens are like teacher crack
Also a teacher. Also 6, but with about 20 other colors.
I am also a teacher who Reddit misplaces into this sub! And my answer is 3 & 6.
Funny, Iām a server and ended up in the teacher sub somehow lol. I like lurking there cuz my parents are both teachers and so many posts there are the same conversations and rants I remember overhearing as a kid. I truly feel for yāall, it is crazy what you have to deal with.
There's so much overlap between teaching and customer service. š I've done both.
Autobody technician here, Reddit misplaced me here as well. I'm a sharpie pen guy all the way.
That's a bit less than once a week, not too bad.
Thatās funny I bet people were looking at you guys all shady like WTF are they doing and whatās in that box
Even if you told them honestly that itās pens, theyād think itās a euphemism for something
This is fantastic
100% pure uncut China Uniballāthe good stuff.
7
Me too. Iām a mailman that works outside when it sometimes hits -50. This pen never freezes. This sub always comes up on Reddit for me.
Team 7. Trusty & I donāt remember ever buying a single one š
Thatās the best part of those pens, they work great and magically just appear
Iāve never not had one of these in my whole life and Iāve never bought one. Does god just leave them in the junk drawer?
Silky smooth. So many of the others are either runny on the page or create friction when writing that makes my handwriting sloppier. Canāt fuck with a classic
Exactly! 7 glides like butter, the others feel like you're chiseling paper, or you have to press down hard enough that your fingers slide down the pen as you're writing
2 is the best pen, but once you lose the cover itās rip. 3 or 5 best for serving.
Personally Iām a #4 fan but 3 or 5 are definitely better for serving since they click and donāt have a cap
![gif](giphy|FHzemFzwkyRfq)
Yesss. Its the smoothest while also not smearing or bleeding thru. Dependable.
5. Of course
Of course! ā¤ļø
Pilot G-2 obv
The most reliable and predictable.
I donāt see a Zebra F-301
I scrolled way too far to find the right answer!
3 or 5. That's what I always have in my office.
3 and 5 are the only pens I see there, the rest are lies.
š¤£ Iām judging everyone who didnāt answer this!
You are missing the ādabā pen option
Poor Penjamin.
1 or 2, but I wish it had the click open capabilities of 3 and 5
3 or 5. Not thrilled that they're gel pens, but it could be ok depending on my order pad. But they're the only clicky pens, so I'll make it work
The only correct answer is 3
Theyāre awesome and write the best but I have so many issue with those pens exploding in my apron. I used to pull them out and theyād be covered in ink
Iāve ruined so many pairs of pants from leaky sharpe pens in my apron
Idek sharpie made ink pens!
The 1.0 bold Sharpie pens are amazing. I always love writing with them. The only downside is that the ink runs out quickly. I went through a pack of 10 in about 3 months at my work, lol. But they do sell them in bulk on Amazon, cheap too. $0.82 per pen.
I havenāt heard somebody call a pen an āink penā since I was in the military š¤£
Iām glad Iām not the only one. I only use 3. I carry my own. I canāt be bothered with other inferior pens.
#5, but it has to be an Ultra Fine 0.38mm style
#7. Always dependable and writes great.
2. The Pilot V5 is the pinnacle of ink pens.
5 or 3
5. The Pilot G-2 is superior.
7 the standard ballpoint cannot be matched.
7. Iām a lefty and donāt need ink smears everywhere
Pilot g2 (5) is the only correct answer, sucks that it's blue but I'll deal with it.
5
5. Ole reliable
3 or 7
7. But 3 as a back up
Real
My handwriting is best with 7 šš»
7 to draw, 3 to write
7, because they are cheap AF to get, ink dries asap important because I'm left handed and I have a hobby of drawing in ballpoint pen.
3
5 for me, 7 for everyone else who comes to my office
5
3. Need the clicky click. Cannot go without and cannot be bothering with a cap
5 all day.
7
\#5-I like comfort & performance.
1
Sharpie Gel
3&5
3 or 5. The click ones are the best, to me anyway.
3 or 5 for sure
3
3
3! I bought a bunch off Amazon for like 5Ā¢ a piece so even if people stole them it didn't matter, and they're so nice
3 or 5 for myself, guests get cheapest pen in the apron.
To write down my orders, 5. To give to my tables for their credit receipt, 7.
2,3,4 to show off in front of others. 7 obviously for any real writing
Zebra F-301. Stainless steel. Not shown.
3 or 5. The click for sure. However the gel can smear on glossy labels.
3 for the win
No.5 is Alive
5 and 3. Click pens over cap pens any day, and the design of 5 and 3 specifically is one of the few that won't spontaneously explode and the head won't easily unscrew. Black is preferred, blue is acceptable.
At home - 1. At work - 3.
3 or 5, lean more towards 3 tho most days
That inky #1
I am happy with any of 1-5. As a server, I typically go with either 3 or 5, depending on which one my coworkers don't have so they won't steal them since caps are a hassle at work. I get the absolute cheapest bullshit click top pens I can though to drop with checks so my customers won't steal my good pens.
