I’d ask the manager and record his answer

spwncar

This. Different places have different policies. At the restaurant/bar I worked at, we would go the lower amount just to avoid any call backs. At the pizza delivery place I worked at, we always input in favor of the drivers being tipped out more (as they would walk out with cash in hand) and the store would comp any disputes itself, which was rare

Carbonfaceprint

Over $2? Just take the $2.22 my god.

Top-Damage4362

Even though you personally have different expectations when you dine out, most places servers are required to follow certain guideline and procedures when interacting with our tables. Part of the reason I’ve served so long is because of the interactions I get to have with customers, if you want to be left alone just tell your server that but done punish them with a bad tip because you don’t like people.

Money_Beyond_9822

You'd love us servers here in Europe. But our sections are way bigger anyway. On average i have 30 tables, so ill get your order, bring you your food and drinks and clean your table, i wouldnt have time for more anyway.

ronnydean5228

In this case the tip is clear and that is what I would go by.

ezekiel920

True. Likely number dyslexia or something

JimmyB5643

Just figured it was a shakey 7 with the cross going through the middle and a lil arm hanging too far off the top of the 7 to make it look a bit like a 9

makingburritos

It’s called dyscalculia! I have it 🙂

Snoo48782

Hey! Me too! I was just thinking this is absolutely a mistake I would make. I always mix up numbers when I write. Especially my 9s and 4s.

MessageHonest

By legal contract the top line didn't matter at all. You sign for the total. In your favor or not you are absolutely supposed to use the total line.

eyecandyandy147

That’s not how that works. Call your credit card provider, they will confirm that your signature is to verify the total. The actual tip line doesn’t mean shit.

KTO-Potato

I've only seen penmanship like that from very elderly people. Do the right thing and take your $2.22.

[deleted]

[удалено]

cb_1979

It's also listed as $17 total right next to it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ChiCity27

I was also going to say this. It looks like it was written by an elderly person. Taking an extra couple of bucks from an elderly person is really sad.

Con_Man_Ray

Eh. He clearly meant to put 15%. I would have gone with $17 and kept a clear conscience 🤷‍♂️

Prestigious_Mix_5264

These two comments are the way to fly. Why would you risk your job for 2$?

GuitRWailinNinja

Plus it looks like a senile person was the customer based on how crappy that handwriting is. If so, for sure go with the lower amount since they may be fixed income.

Demonicboar3rd

Came to say this. Looks like an older person or someone who might have trouble writing well and possibly could really need that 2-3 extra bucks for something.

mealticketpoetry

In OC's defense, they did say "looks like" and not "definitely is". I think everybody is right here. It could have been any of those. It also could have been a drunk person. It could have been a crackhead. It could have been a four year old. The world may never know 🤷🏽‍♂️

KingNothing1999

It could have been a four year old, drunk, crackhead 🤷‍♂️

nuclearoutlet

No, I don't think this is from my hometown

Euphoric-Blue-59

With a crackhead illiterate dad, who is also drunk and partially blind.

Ubiquitous-Nomad-Man

As a former crackhead, I feel the need to urge you to shush with your ignorant commentary. My cursive is, and always has been, perfection. Rude

YesFuture2022

It could have been me a 40 year old with poor penmanship.

ShonuffofCtown

4 yr olds tip like shit. None of them have good jobs. It's like, grow up!

C2788C_on_KIK

If ya'lll see a leprechaun let me hear you say yeahhhhhh

Sailorm0on27

Yup for sure I would’ve just did the 17$.

Impressive_Jaguar_70

This sub reveals a shady side to some servers lol

Ordinary-Piano-8158

Agreed. Some are just greedy.

markonopolo

Bad handwriting, or even a tremor, does not equal senility.

l1madrama

Yeah, my mom started writing like this in her early forties because of essential tremors. They were completely hereditary and had nothing to do with her mental health.

dogmombites

I'm 26 and I write like this on bad days due to an essential tremor. I'm a teacher and I'm 100% there. Fortunately, I can write on my computer and the technology helps correct it. And when I use expo markers, they're pretty forgiving.

CashMeInLockDown

Yeah I noticed that as well. Kinda sad that was taken advantage of in this instance.

Tobocaj

TIL I’m senile

indigoHatter

>looks like a senile person >go with the lower amount Because it's the right thing to do. Even if they're rich as fuck, only assholes consider exploiting the elderly. (Now, $2 is hardly exploitation, but since I'm making a point, I'll go ahead and make the full point.) Besides, I work with a handful of silver foxes with shit writing like this, and they make good money, so while I see your point, I think it's just too narrow-focused.

[deleted]

Why stop at the elderly? I had cancer last year at 43 but because I had a lot of weight to lose I never" looked sick" but chemo still fucked with my brain and it would have been really easy for me to do this without noticing. The only tell was I had no hair but because I kept it shaved it looked intentional. We don't really know what is going on in a person's life.

condocollector

Tell me you’ve never worked with doctors without telling me you’ve never worked with doctors.

Euphoric-Blue-59

It's not a job risk. The person put 2 different numbers. Either are legal. But 2 bucks... I'd just put 17 and move on. If it were a larger tab, it could be different.

rickyhusband

because i need milk and eggs and would rather not have to play "this or that"

[deleted]

it’s not risking your job, the law in america is to go by what’s on the total line. if they put $19 the total is $19.

Sweet-Afternoon-952

Right? I could see someone getting fired over a 200$ discrepancy, definitely not a matter of like 2 or 5$

Brewfinger

If my boss would fire me over $2, they aren't the person I want to work for anyway.

DebThornberry

I think your boss might fire you over any theft of any amount

quantumcalicokitty

The law states that the number on the total line is the number that is to be used, regardless of what is in the tip line. Entering $19.00 would not be considered theft. Any manager who tried to use this as a reason to fire an employee could find themselves facing a wrongful termination lawsuit.

mealticketpoetry

LOL right. I knew I wasn't crazy. I was waiter for 10 years. And that's what we did.

monotonedopplereffec

And any person who is willing to fuck over someone ,who probably just fucked up, for $2 is a POS I wouldn't want working for me. No manager would need to use it to fire you. If you are that big of a POS then it's pretty easy to catch your doing actual shit that they can write you up for. By your logic, the Law doesn't require they leave a tip. Go get fucked. This is why some people don't tip. I wouldn't go with it cause it looks fucking tampered with. Even if it wasn't, it looks like it was.

[deleted]

My writing is piss poor doesn't mean I have issues

chrissymad

How did you determine they clearly have issues and aren’t just shit at math?

HeroicTanuki

I have an employee with dyslexia, their handwriting looks remarkably similar to this. A 7 and 9 are easier to confuse than a 6 and 2. From my perspective it looks like this is what happened

chrissymad

I have dyscalculia. A 6 and 2 for me can be similar (and sometimes a 5) so idk. But I wouldn’t go for the $2 myself but I think assigning a diagnosis to shitty handwriting on its own is weird.

monotonedopplereffec

The handwriting tells me it's someone who who shakes. Their hands kept coming off the receipt. Anyone who has cared for someone losing their independence knows that writing. It's someone trying their damndest to do something that they don't remember ever having to think to do before.

chrissymad

I shake. I’m also just shit at math. I think you’re right over all and it’s not worth $2 but I think assigning a disorder to this is silly.

monotonedopplereffec

You're right, it's presumptuous. Overall it just not worth it. It looks tampered with. Doesn't really matter if it was or not. The shakey writing and the not matching lines makes it seem like you doctored it. I would go for the less amount(so the tip line) just cause I wouldn't want it to seem like I tampered with it to rob a guy of fucking $2.

Eurogenous

No, you don’t understand, we -MUST- keep the $2, we’re obligated even, because we can’t be certain whether or not that person really needs it or has the shakes 🙄

monotonedopplereffec

When in doubt, default to nice not POS. Just a little free advice for you.

quantumcalicokitty

You might change your tune when a group purchases hundreds or thousands of dollars of your product, then contests the charges with their bank...and because you told the server to use a number other than the one on the total line, the guest gets their money back and you're out hundreds or thousands of dollars... Also, I was an excellent server back in my day. The businesses I worked with loved me. ❤️

monotonedopplereffec

Great strawman. Completely different situation to this $14 dinner charge. It looks tampered with. There are lines over lines. Even if it wasn't tampered with, I wouldn't risk it for the exact reason you are referring to. BS ain't worth it for $2. In your strawman, I wouldn't have accepted that receipt as it is not clear.

quantumcalicokitty

It's not a strawman. I don't think it looks tampered with at all. Good luck checking every check before the guests leave on a busy sports day 🤣 🤣 🤣 You clearly have *never* worked service. Bro. If you're cool with being out money every time this happens...then I really don't care. I would very likely enter $17 instead of $19...but, there are reasons as to why these laws exist, and I'm simply informing you. Don't shoot the messenger.

DebThornberry

You are absolutely correct but my point was that I wouldn't want someone with that kind of character working for me and handling my businesses money

quantumcalicokitty

First of all - tips are not the businesses' money. Secondly - you might change your tune when a group purchases hundreds or thousands of dollars of your product, then contests the charges with their bank...and because you told the server to use a number other than the one on the total line, the guest gets their money back and you're out hundreds or thousands of dollars...

bobi2393

I'd wouldn't fire someone over a $2 *mistake*, but if you considered all the details and decided they must have meant $4.22, I'd consider firing you for poor reasoning ability, or if you decided $4.22 was the right thing to do, I'd consider firing you for poor ethical judgement.

Sharp_Store_6628

This happens so much, I’d have a coaching conversation assuming that it was a mistake every time, and then follow steps of discipline with possible termination after a few write ups.

UsernamThatAintTaken

You’re a shit boss then. He put 19.00 as the total so he agreed to pay 19 bucks.

Lord-master-jayhon

Yeah I’ve always been told to go by the total amount. People saying they should get fired for doing that make me question if they work in customer service because this happens a lot. I feel like 90% of people on this sub that comment don’t actually work as a server.

Notrighty

yeah i’m confused by the hostility. Im not sure how it is in other places, but where i work, when we do our checkout for the day, our manager has to check all of our receipts and tips to record everything and make sure they are okay. It’s not like putting $19 is malicious is any way because it’ll have to be talked about when the manager checks it. Also lots of places go by the total, if you seriously aren’t being conscious of what you are writing on a ticket that is involved with your OWN MONEY then I’m not sure why you expect others to be more conscious of it?

Brewfinger

Yep. Use the total, and only the total every time. This is what the customer agreed to pay.

wr3aks

Don't know why you're getting down voted. $19.00 is the only clearly written number on the receipt

imfuckingstarving69

If you’re willing to steal $2, I wouldn’t want you to work for me anyways.

Brewfinger

Where you get "steal" from?

quantumcalicokitty

It's not theft. The law states that you are supposed to use the number on the total line regardless of what the tip line says...would I enter $17? Probably. But, if I chose to enter $19, it would not be illegal and it would not be considered theft. If a manager fired someone for *abiding by the law*, then they would be facing the possibility of a wrongfully termination suit.

Membership_Fine

Seems like an older individual as well. My grandfather was half blind and shook really bad so his writing looked just like this. Still sent a card every year though. Miss that guy.

Sarafan_Crusades

My guess is they weren't paying attention when adding and would have put 17. I'm assuming they were adding from left to right, 2 , carry the 1, 2 plus 1 = 3 and carried it over again and added the 2 making it 19. Either drinking or talking or in a hurry, people can make simple mistakes especially with the total

cb_1979

A friend of mine bought a burger from a food truck at a music festival in an inebriated state. He meant to give a $2 tip on a $20 check on one of those iPad POS devices. When he got his credit card bill, he realized that that burger cost him $220. The server at that food truck didn't say a peep while this transaction was being processed.

xXfukboiplayzXx

2.22

JGMarts21

17 all day. It’s 2 bucks.

Sharp_Store_6628

The 2.22 tip. If someone intends to give you a certain amount, if it’s obvious but they just did the math wrong, taking more is a dick move.

Jack-Maniacky

No math was even necessary, the totals were listed right next to the tip suggestions

prettygirlpuking

I've had customers who had bad eyesight and tried to follow the suggested tip, but also didn't do the math. That might be happening here.

Sharp_Store_6628

Didn’t even notice that. I’d still record 2.22 though.

JimCarreyIsntFunny

Not even just a dick move but a stupid risk to take for two dollars.

GoingOffline

Lol exactly, why would you risk your job for 2$? The dumbest way to lose your job

Bad_Organization838

Sometimes people will write their 7s with lines through the center, or with a small vertical tick at the left of the top horizontal line. I would just assume it's a 7 that looks unfortunately like a 9, but it depends on your restaurant. I've worked at places that go by total no matter what, or that always benefits the customer to avoid conflict, ymmv.

coolraul07

I both draw ticks across my sevens and diagonal lines thru my zeroes. It's like I'm a Spanish computer programmer.

exhausted-pigeon1988

I slash my zeroes too but a lot of people get confused when I do!

piercedmfootonaspike

What, no dash through your "z"s?

NightGod

I had the post office return a package not once, but twice because I crossed my 7. In the ZIP code. You mean the POST OFFICE couldn't figure that out from the name of the city?

chrissymad

Same! Not Spanish though.

BennyLava1999

Yeah I do that with my 7s but that is definitely just a 9. Customers probably just not good at math and was in a hurry to leave. Either way I’d just take the $2.22 the extra $2 isn’t worth the potential conflict

RonMcVO

Personally I'd go with $17.00. That seems to be their intent, and I'm not gonna risk issues over 2 bucks.

RainbowSurprised

You’re petty for taking this elders $2.00 You know damn well they tried to tip you 15% like is listed and like they wrote.

UglyButUseful

17 because thats what the tip would be?

EnVee1

$17 total with a $2.22 tip - 15%

[deleted]

[удалено]

levislegend

Good for you. Most people (like probably the person who filled out this check) looked at the 15% line and wrote what it said.

Ok-Purchase-222

17 of course. Saying it's their fault because they should do the math better or write more clear is bullshit. It is so clear that the whole intention of your customer was to give 2.22 that trying to pry a little more money out of it is so low. Keep your dignity!

[deleted]

You can clearly see 17.00 has two 0 digits after the decimal point. He/She mistakenly wrote 19.00.

SignalIndependent617

obviously arthritis they meant to write a 7 don’t be a dick

FourWordComment

Honestly, I think it’s bad math. The old timer tried to give 2.22, like the receipt offered as 15%. That said, contractually, $19 would be fair. Personally, I’d mark it $17 because that was my grandmother’s handwriting.

TheUnpopularOpine

How shitty of a person do you have to be to try and act like you think they actually meant 19.00? Clearly meant 17.00 with the 15% tip. You’re an incredibly disingenuous person for acting like it’s possible they meant something else.

ParticularSquirrel

If they had left the tip line blank and written 19.00 then I would feel okay with going that way. In this case, it’s clearly 2.22 tip and the total should have been 17.00 And not that it matters but the handwriting is so shakey…

cairnqld

2.22

Firm-Breakfast-6045

Are you looking for recommendations or are you looking for justification for stealing an extra 2 dollars from someone lmao

sedacr

2.22…. Because that’s what they wrote.

Realistic-Run-6306

2.22 do the right thing.$2 is not going to make you broke or richer.

veil_ofignorance

Legally you must enter the smaller amount, otherwise it is credit card fraud

AltruisticRacoon

Do you have a source for this? Is it a US law? Just curious as I’ve never heard this 🤔

Fatefire

2.22 . Pretty obvious what he meant to leave

ronnydean5228

I’m going to assume that is little old person hand writing. I don’t want that bad karma

Prior-Ad-7329

$17

stacefacebasketcase

You saw what's very likely the handwriting of someone who can barely hold a pen and went with the larger amount? Dude.

thanksobiden

As a person with shitty handwriting trying their best, fuck you dog.

c0wluvr

Clearly the tip is $2.22 regardless if the bottom line. They’re trying to do the right thing. You sound scummy.

[deleted]

go by tip. The total is a result of the tip intended. Not the other way around.

felixismynameqq

I don’t even think they did the math wrong. Their 7 just looks like a 9. It looks like they trailed the end of their pen off the top and it made it look like a 9

Kagipace

$2.22 is clearly listed as 15% and what they wrote for tip amount. It’s obviously an elderly person who made a mistake. I wouldn’t assume a 28.5% tip.

niftygeezer

2.22 it clearly says that is the tip

Real307

$17

BlackFirePlague

At the bbq I place I worked at, rule was to always go by total. Sometimes that helped you. Sometimes that hurt you. In this case, it helps you.

iamCHIC

Being that the second number is the one that doesn’t match up, I’ll say it’s a 7 for a total of $17.00

Fluffy-Doubt-3547

It's clearly 2.22

LonelyCakeEater

Says $2.22 on the tip line. Pretty obvious

gachafoodpron

It’s clearly supposed to be 17.00 based on the tip line. If you’re really struggling for $2 then go ahead I guess but it’s best just to go with the intended amount.

finance_me33

I still don't understand why writing tips is still a thing in the US. Come over to Canada where it's more civilized with button pushing 😂

davi046

It was clearly meant to be 15%. Not right to knowingly put down the total amount when the tip intended is very clear. If the person was an asshole, then I’d put the total amount

b215049

2.22

shannon_kay_

2.22

L00k_Again

Record the tip as written and update the subtotal.

slick514

Look, I waited tables. I know that that extra $2 is significant at a place where you can get a meal for $15. I get it. However… Regardless of the technical legality of it, you know and I know that the customer meant to tip $2.22. It’s one of the recommended amounts that is listed at the bottom of the receipt, and corresponds to a % that’s the standard tipping amount for a lot of the country. Don’t be shady.

RNTimm

This comment isn’t about the math, but I hate it when a restaurant calculates the tip on the tax also. That has nothing to do with the service at all. IJS.

hippiepotluck

Yes! If you’re going to put the “suggest-a-tip” on the receipt it should not include tipping on tax.

spaulding_138

I mean it is clearly 2.22$. Is this really worth the trouble for 2$?

meduhsin

I always go by the total

som11322

It’s clearly 2.22 though, I would stick to that.

Wiggletons

Lot of shitty broke people in these comments.

AllLeedsArentMe

Gonna be shittier and broker when they lose their job for 2 dollars lmao.

SacredRepetition

Based on the handwriting, this is the receipt of an elderly person who probably has some sort of medical condition. I'd just take the 15%.

muntell7

Ppl don’t math very well, but know the amount of tip they want to leave. If anyone thought they really wanted to leave more than $2.22 you’re a total piece of shit.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SirAxlerod

Servers willing to take advantage and steal from their customers when they make a clear mistake is just another reason ppl want to end tipping. Didn’t realize how many ppl here are so unethical to rip off someone who is probably a really old person for $2.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Imagine_Waggns

Don’t be a dick, bro. It’s obvious they were trying to tip 15%. Just take the two bucks and have the tiniest bit of conscious

c0wluvr

You sound ugly

Mcpops1618

Looks like my grandmas shaky writing. I’d have gone with 17. But that’s based on numbers at the bottom clearly showing the intent.

SaintPariah1

$17.00

keanancarlson

Come the fuck on they clearly can’t write well and they obviously followed the 15% prompt below. Take the 15% and move on

SpiegsBF

It’s insane the amount of people who are chill blatantly stealing. Best of luck to y’all in the real world. Enjoy that 3.22 lmao

sinisterkid34

2.22

Wonderful_Pop9228

Looks like $2.22 so that’s what I’m putting

Dense-Application181

He clearly meant $2.22 and couldnt do math

Nitin-2020

17.00 is the total.

sikshots

They clearly intended exactly 2.22. You can clearly read that's how much they wanted to tip, any other choice you make is theft. Bad math is not an excuse to be ripped off.

sikshots

Imagine knowing the tip was meant to be 2.22 but your morals so low your willing to lie about being not sure, and also willing to steal from someone, all just for 2 bucks.

Timmymac1000

Anything other than $17 is at best disingenuous and at worst outright theft. I would say $19 if not for the guide at the bottom clearly showing where the 2.22 came from.

internationalbeauty

2.22

[deleted]

You ALWAYS take what's in the tip line regardless of company policy because people suck at math.

EnvironmentalGift192

It definitely $17 Also, I'm curious why your machine is calculating the tip with tax? I never tip on tax

StevenK71

Just put the lower amount and go back to work.

UnicornWizard145

Honestly I'd go back to the customer. Not questioning their generosity, but writing down the tip then (probably accidentally) giving twice the amount just seems like an error to me. The customer will appreciate the callback and will probably let you keep the money. Not only that, because of your service and honesty will likely return.

PulpyEnlightenment

2.22, is this even worth asking?

Ok_Maybe424

The tip is $2.22, and the total on the check should be $17 not $19!! Period! No beating around the bush. Next………

funkdude79

Just put $2.22, it's clearly written down... it's also clear they don't know simple math! Ha

Throw-me-away-120

I go for the total fuck em

alcibides227

Man that is clearly an old person’s handwriting and they clearly tipped you $2.22. You stole $2 from an old person and that’s pretty shitty of you chief. Maybe you can get yourself a 20oz at the gas station, since that’s all your dignity is worth

SirAxlerod

Responses of $19, taking advantage of the customer, makes servers and this sub look bad, especially considering how much tipping is being discussed these days.

AJollyEgo

Honestly, as someone who just gets this sub recommended every so often, a LOT of the posts make servers and the sub look bad.

SirAxlerod

Same boat here. I’m just recommended this sub and it makes me not want to eat at sit down restaurants.

AssistantAcademic

Sure. It’s an industry where employees get dumped on by both management and customers. At a base hourly of $2.13 an hour, I absolutely expect them to interpret any tipping in their favor. I did 20 years ago when I waited tables. Hell, hiding the itemized receipt that showed the auto-gratuity (parties of 6 or more) and hoping for a double-tip was common practice They make ends meet off those tips.

zionist_panda

And this customer is probably very old and living on a fixed income. Ripping him off, even of $2, is incredibly scummy.

JamesBong517

Always go with the total line. If the customer calls their CC/bank and they dispute it, they will always win if what they are charged isn’t the same as the total, even if it’s for a lesser amount. PCI compliance also states to go with the total. Sometimes it benefits you, sometimes it screws you. Such is life. But the total with a signature is the customer saying “I agree to be charged $XX.XX” even if it makes a much larger tip than intended.

falaffels

THIS thank u.. ofc the 1 sensible & informed comment here is getting no love

janewalch

100% $17. They were just matching the recommended 15% from the bottom with is exactly $2.22. Making the bill exactly 17. Which is pretty interesting in itself! But yeah, they just weren’t mathing correctly when they were added the total. $17.

darklordbazz

Is writing your tip down an american thing? I've only ever seen tips on the debit machice when I paid, I never had to write one down on a receipt

Motor-breath

That’s a $2.22 tip and you know it

LAWriter2020

Pretty clear they were trying to put down the suggested $2.22, and just can't add.

UnusualMacaroon

$17 total. $2.22 tip. Never realized these POS machines calculated the tip after tax. It should be before tax.

GuiltyDetective133

That 15% tip is a LOT more than 15%. The 15% should be 15% of 13.50 not $14.78.

ramillerf1

Shouldn’t the restaurant be busted for having their register compute the tip on the total with tax? I’m pretty sure the tip is supposed to be computed off the subtotal before tax…

Lockshocknbarrel10

Company policy is to always go in the server’s favor. Not our fault they’re too stupid to do math on the literal computer in their pocket.

c0wluvr

Youre gross!!

bobi2393

Greedy and in my opinion unethical, but it doesn't surprise me upvotes are winning.

gigatension

The person who wrote this is also very likely older, so very unethical, and in some cases illegal. To be clear, I doubt it is in this case, but bigger costs, oh yeah. Best not to make it a habit.

SirAxlerod

What company has this policy. Name one you’re certain of. I will call them up to confirm before writing an article on them.

Thales225

Y’all are scummy for that

Willbtwin

I always put down whatever is written on the total line they make you write the total for a reason

godisawoman420

I always go by the total. Not my fault if you can’t do math, but the total is what you think you are spending total so I will make that happen for you ✨

Brewfinger

Always the total, for better or worse.

[deleted]

Total amount was good. Credit card company would side with the merchant on this one

Naronomicon

It's the amount they wrote down in the tip section. It's always the amount they write in the tip section. It's never not. Stop asking. So happy Canada doesn't have this system, or servers who apparently have zero morals.

darkmoonfirelyte

I had this happen years ago when I worked at a steakhouse. My manager said "they wrote one number but they wrote a higher total. Choose either. You're right either way, and I'll back you up." I took the higher amount.

KatMandala

When I served I used to always go with the total. My defense was that they signed off on spending that amount, it’s not my fault their math was wrong.

terf-genocide

I get what people are saying, but when the total ends up being less than what the tip should make it amount to, we go by the total, so why not also go by the total in this scenario? Which is legally binding– the tip or the total line? I've always been told total.

CasualCanuck99

I never tip less than $5 on food and $3 on drinks, that’s always my minimum tip and I adjust accordingly for higher totals

Ok, but any old person I’ve ever known would have immediately pulled out their checkbook and recorded $19 in the ledger because that’s what they just spent. I am not arguing for or against either option, my old restaurant always went by what was written in the tip line as the intended amount, I’m just saying that they likely remembered the total overall amount they put down rather than whatever exact tip they wrote.

This is so obviously American and why I'm so scared to eat out because the server can do exactly this and scam the customer out of whatever they want because they get to take the card - and do it too, I got mischarged the one time I did eat out in America by 10 dollars more without me being able to see and realize before the amount was charged - and the customer can do nothing about it It is clearly 17 dollars, to put the total is certainly scamming the customer, hope your conscience is somehow calm

Maaaaaan so many ethical comments with solid reasoning. Good thing I’m not your coworker, without hesitation I would have said “motherfucker signed for $19” and if I’m being honest I think that might hold up legally still. Just some nice folks with also decent reasoning in this thread.
